Dina sees what everyone else sees. The only difficulty she has is with an ever-changing context. I think that’s why she said she likes dinosaurs so much. They’re a fixed point in history, no moving parts.
Perhaps that’s true, but overall aside from a few changes and discoveries here and there the material is remarkably consistent, especially when taken against the ongoing chaos that seems to be this groups day to day lives.
Still, our knowledge of prehistoric creatures doesn’t change NEARLY as quickly as our fellow humans do. Even when a new discovery is made in paleontology, it can still take years for that discovery to be independently researched and debated and verified. By contrast, a human personality can go through such a dramatic change over the course of a mere few hours that they become nigh-unrecognizable, even to their closest friends. It’s one reason why it’s possible to have 20/20 hindsight but not the same for foresight (or…present-sight, I guess you’d call it? You get the idea.).
She’s only 18. She’s never really lived in a world where feathered dinos (and birds as dinos) weren’t accepted (and as time progresses, she will, before long, literally have not lived in such a world). The only changes she has to deal with are new discoveries that add on, not things that change the paradigm.
You’re not wrong, but while our understanding of the dinos’ biology changes, we aren’t spontaneously generating new species of dinosaur at the rate of a handful a week. A raptor is still a raptor, covered in feathers or otherwise.
By contrast, humans change by the year, by the month, by the week, even by the day. What a word or expression means (or how people will take it) changes at the drop of a hat compared to prehistory.
Look at how society is compared to five years ago, ten years ago, twenty, fifty. Now compare that to dinosaurs, where the only changes that I, as a casual observer, have heard of is that some dinosaurs may have had feathers, and brontosauruses weren’t ever a thing.
JFTR, Brontosaurus has never in your lifetime been a consensus-accepted valid genus. It was reclassified as a junior synonym of Apatosaurus in 1903.
(There’s some research suggesting that A. excelsus and a couple other species are, in fact, a different genus (which would involve the resurrection of Brontosaurus, as B. excelsus was the type species for the genus), but that hasn’t been commonly accepted, as yet.)
And how do you know that 6Qubed isn’t older than 112?
Anyway, whatever the scientific consensus may have been, the cardboard dinosaur cutout posters I had back in 19*mumblemumble* had it clearly labeled “Brontosaurus”.
Camarasaurus skull. The skeleton did belong to what is now called A. excelsus (or B. excelsus), but it was headless, so someone who did a reconstruction had to guess what the head looked like and guessed wrong.
The actual head of Whatever excelsus was shaped more or less the same as other Diplodocid (and Apatosaurus, specifically) skulls, whereas Camarasaurus has a much taller, shorter head. (Camarasaurus is relatively close to Brachiosaurus – a great-uncle, if you will.) The skull issue didn’t create the illusion of the genus, it just gave generations of artists and kids the wrong idea of what it looked like.
It feels like people keep forgetting these characters are 18. They can cut her off financially. They can abandon her emotionally and refuse to ever speak to her again. But as long as Joyce can find a way to keep paying the tuition her parents can’t pull her out of her college. They can apply financial and social pressures but short of going full Toedad on her they can not force her to leave.
There are scholarships, there are grants, there’s the work study program, if it’s the only way there are loans (these days she might never be able to pay them back but they’re an option). If she wants to stay badly enough there’s nothing they can do.
I saw that it was related to GamerGate and noped the fuck outta there. Going full Walky mostly involves being almost completely insensitive to sensitive shit.
I’m not sure what Babies McIntosh is, but going full McIntosh is a Gamergate phrase mashing up Tropic Thunder’s most over-used joke with the name of Feminist Frequency’s producer, Jonathan McIntosh. The implication is he’s mentally impaired, because GG can’t see any other reason a man could be angry about the treatment of women in games.
So I was supposed to trawl throught the comments, pick out and note the first letters of particular posts, and unscramble them to get an acrostic that told me to get screwed?
“Dina, you have it wrong. I said, ‘This FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE indicates a premature employment of self-referencial humor to ease tension.’ Remember, Faaaaaaaaaaaaace.”
Joyce is new to independent thought, and has not yet realized that it is possible to defy her parents.
(Not quite non-sequitur: I was out of the house three years and a thousand miles distant after many years of SERIOUS teenage rebellion before I realized that when my parents started yelling about how terrible I was, it was okay to hang up the phone.)
I was 24 before I felt entirely comfortable about exploring my beliefs for myself and differing from my parents’ beliefs. I mean, I noticed serious misgivings with my folks’ beliefs before I even left HS, buuut I didn’t really seriously think or question it until uni. And I didn’t feel comfortable with the conclusions I’d come to for quite a few years after that.
Well maybe it’s the Thanksgiving comic? The strips don’t coincide with the real world exactly, so maybe Thanksgiving hasn’t happened yet for the characters.
Because her parents, while also being fundies, are still resembling human beings and real parents (unlike Toedad, who aimed with a rifle at his daughter and shot in the air, risking that the falling missile injured or killed somebody – even his daughter).
Parents that still care for their children want to discuss a possibly traumatic event like a school shooting or her closest friend nearly abducted by her friends’ father. And they want to dicuss it in person.
They want to ensure that everything is on order, that Joyce is fine.
Joyce has delayed this probably by insisting she was to show up at her college courses (and her parents may be impeded by their jobs to show up themselves at IU), but now is the weekend and she has time to come back home.
Joyce’s parents may come from the same fundie group as Toedad, but there are still different levels of ass-holiness.
(Technically since she wasn’t wearing boots before, she was just booted, not rebooted.)
However, someone should “apply” those boots to Becky for that next to last panel line. Becky and Joyce are definitely operating “out of phase”, resulting in system lock-up.
She does not have agoraphobia. She fears males she doesn’t know / can’t trust and sees Ryans in them. Big places without males propbably do not cause fear in her – and if they cause fear, it is the fear of meeting Ryan.
What she has is more like “androphobia”.
But i better stop inventing new medical terms and leave diagnosis to real doctors.
Her injured arm is the same one that got cut up at the disastrous party, and she has a tendency to clutch at it when the trauma from that is affecting her.
Given what Becky tells her when she catches up, it seems like this could be relating to her issues with being alone outdoors.
So, now we know why Joyce’s home and parents feature in future comics.
I *really* don’t think it’s a good idea for Becky to go home with Joyce. I don’t see Joyce’s parents being welcoming and accepting under the circumstances.
Agreed, this whole visit will be enough of a train wreck by itself without Becky’s involvement. Of course this could be the best time for Becky to get some things from home (unless Toedad is out on bail pending trial of course) but yeah, this has disaster written all over it.
Strap yourselves in folks, drama’s going to be set to 11 for a while.. 🙂
In Indiana, the only offense for which you can be denied bail is murder. And even then if the person charged can meet the burden of proof to say they should get bail, they might be able to get bail. Attempted murder, kidnapping, etc, bail is still possible/required.
That said, I would hope that the prosecutor uses the facts that Ross is a man who threatened college students with a rifle and fired said rifle even if it wasn’t at anybody, and that he is a kidnapper who has shown himself and declared himself (Becky’s phone call to 911) very willing to repeat his crimes and flee the jurisdiction would make him a flight risk and send the bail amount up into the stratosphere.
That will depend on the current charges filed. He’ll most likely be charged with discharging a firearm in a gun free zone and that’s a Federal offense. He’ll have to get bail on the State and local charges which will require multiple judges, and get bail on the Federal charges. Bail on the Federal charge probably won’t happen. The real danger will come from the other fundamentalists in town that will blame her for Fundie’s incarceration, and worst of all, for the embarrassing publicity their church will receive.
Her ‘brother’ will be there though, yeah? it seemed liked he was still family-local. That might help? I can see it being still a shock, and still a bit painful for both of them, but ultimately really really valuable in-family support for both of them
Sorta unrelated question: if Joyce takes the Bible literally, what’s her opinion on polygamy and marital rape? Because according to the Old Testament both of those are a-ok as long as the perpetrator got the permission from the woman’s father to marry her. If she takes Genesis and the whole garden of Eden literally, what about the rest of the old laws?
To be fair, it kinda does. I mean, Jesus said he wasn’t coming to remove the Law, but he also said he was there to fulfill it. And then said that “Love your neighbor shall be the whole of the Law.”
The old testament has some stuff in it that’d be relevant to Christians, but it’s also chock full of things that are completely incompatible, impractical, and indeed several things that are literally exclusive to Jews.
For some reason nobody ever quotes the next verse.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”
It’s pretty clear in wider context that Jesus saying “fulfill” does not mean “I cancel it out and install something new.”
Except we have to take into account “translating things into English is how we get all this anti-gay garbage among other stupid things” when we examine that.
I’ll admit I’m no theology scholar, but the consensus I’m getting with ten minutes of research on the subject is that “abolish” in this context means “invalidate.” And Jesus wasn’t trying to invalidate the law. It’s important. God said it.
But “fulfill” does mean “we’re changing shit” because the law appears to have been intended as a large-scale system of sacrifice in the name of raw obedience. Both actual sacrifice and spiritual sacrifice. Christ, dying for everyone’s sins, “fulfills” the law as in “satisfies its criteria” and thus all that’s required is faith in Christ.
Which will naturally lead to following all the super important laws ‘cuz if you’re actually trying to hold to Christ’s teachings you’re not gonna be a dick to everyone.
But hey. Maybe I’m totally wrong, don’t get it at all, and really the text of the thing is entirely self-contradictory and impossible to actually follow. But I really doubt that.
There are probably other things there that she ought to take into her keeping while she can. Big Toe Daddy may be out on bail soon, and in the medium term he’s either going to let or sell or give up the lease on the family home. Anything that Becky doesn’t take charge of will end up either in storage that she doesn’t have access to, or at the Goodwill, or in a dumpster.
If it’s the La Porte I live close to, the French trappers and traders were pretty literal when they named places like it, it being “the door” you needed to pass through to get to a rich trapping area in the mountains. It nowadays is famous for being full of a gruesome mix of religious bigots and meth-heads.
Well, I don’t think we have any mountains in Northern Indiana. According to Wikipedia: “French travelers or explorers so named the area after discovering a natural opening in the dense forests that used to exist in this region, providing a gateway to lands further west.”
I looked up the religious affiliation statistics for La Porte County, IN. Between 2000 and 2010 the mainstream religions to a shellacking. The number of Catholics is down by 8,500 (41%), and the number of main-line Protestants is down by 2,200 (20%). The number of people with no religion is up by nearly 20,000 (39%) and is nearly 64% of the total population.
Yes. I’d be saying snarky things about Becky’s perkiness and boundless energy if she didn’t deserve slack these days for all the trauma she has had lately.
Becky, we all have different ways of dealing with stressful situations. I can see yours is humor… very dark humor (the best kind, IMHO). It seems Joyce wasn’t ready for that…
Poor Becky, her set of tools for handling situations like these are increasingly useless “I tried joking and goofing and laughing…”
Even so, I think it’s a good idea for Joyce to bring Becky with her home, as a reminder of what she’s fighting for, of happier times and simply a rock to lean on.
Wow! Becky seems to have a psyche made of soft foam rubber! No matter what happens, after the load is gone, she springs back into shape! Does anything keep her down for long?
Y’know, the gathering at Casa Brown promises to be… interesting in a certain, potentially apocalyptic manner.
Visiting her childhood home, mostly remaining as she left it before coming to the realization her father doesn’t genuinely care about her as a person, probably would.
Becky puts up a good front, but you can only internalize so much.
Becky copes by laughing so she doesn’t have to cry. If you take the hurtful things and make them funny, they don’t hurt anymore. Or at least not as much. I’m the same way; I totally appreciate where she’s coming from. Walky does the same thing. Then people like Joyce are horrified because how can you joke about something like that?
Well, if you can’t joke about it, then you have to take it seriously, and how can you deal with that?
ZOMFG,
No, Willis I cannot take a full weekend on DOA time, at Joyces parents house.
10 Months? Nooo please. Just kill someone instead.
You could kill off Ruth again, she only has emotional ties to 2 characters.
Unfortunately this time it would destroy Billy.
There are lots of people you can kill off , and it will just add emotional depth and wont sink the comic
Fez, Blaine, Mike, …The squirrel,
Danny would have perfect Before you gave him a soul with that Ethan Slash.
Of course Ryan. Thats an easy one.
Amazi-girls Dies BUT Amber lives.
( And then she is forced to reintegrate her lost self. )
Im not particularly attached to Sayyad yet. But …it might be thought racist or tasteless to kill off the new brown Muslim. Plus hes gay right? we need him for future Slash pairs.
But his grandmother could die ( which we’ve never seen ) and he could reach out to other characters for support. Sayyid gets close to Ethan, makes Danny jealous = Drama tag.
Okay not touching the whole “kill off a character I don’t care about for drama” thing. (Though if nobody cares, it’s not very dramatic)
We are probably seeing Joyce head home. The preview panels show her meeting up with her dad. (This happens late January, early February). But that doesn’t mean we have 10 straight months at th Brown home. Among other things, most the other characters will still be at IU. There will still be plots to check in on there. And besides, Joyce will only spend one full day at home. Thats not 10 months even at this comic’s pace
Beckys Mom had to die to give our lives entertainment.
Shes like the lesbianMaChrist of the story.
For so the the Mother of the TirribleLisbian (? ) gave her only life for thou to have car chaese and kidnappings. Ramen
Weve had 10 month days. i think.
i think Jocelyne might come out. Still Id take minor death over weekend at the Browns. Its going to be rough.
(Sees the stuff about Becky’s mom). What the… what the hell? I don’t even know what you’re going with there.
We have not had 10 month long days. The longest day we’ve had is the day detailed in “The Only Dope For Me is You”. (Amber’s breakdown, and Ruth/Billie’s breakup. Among tons of other things. It was a busy day). It was less than four months. And again, the entire day won’t be at the Browns. We’ve seen preview panels with Sarah and Dina in them. (Also Amber and Carla).
I’m sure it’s going to be full of drama. And heartbreak for Joyce. But I have no idea what would constitute as a minor death. (Considering the time scale and lack of death in the comic). And I have no idea how delaying the drama needlessly would make it better.
So there’s lots of stuff I don’t even know how to begin to approach, but… how does Ethan getting close to another dude make Danny jealous? That’s literally what he’s stated he wants to happen. He wants Ethan to be taken up by somebody else so he can stop feeling guilty for being attracted to him.
And either way if that was something that happened it doesn’t solve the real issue that Danny doesn’t allow himself to just be attracted to other people without thinking of himself as an unfaithful, cheating harlot.
Does Ethan even know Sayid? Really a whole lot of that plot speculation made zero sense. How would a character Joyce doesn’t know getting killed off prevent her from going home?
I mean we’re going to have this conflict between Joyce and her parents at some point. Having it get delayed by some random character death would be unsatisfying. (Besides the fact that having a main character like Ruth die would probably be an unsatisfying conclusion to their story arc. Ruth might only have major connections with Billie, but she does have her own arc that some of us are interested in seeing, even if the OP isn’t).
Oh that makes sense in a somewhat twisted way. I mean as much as I can understand wishing death on Character A because you don’t want to see Characters B and C interact. (With B and C having near nothing to do with A) But I mean the conflict between Joyce and her family is inevitable, and has been inevitable since Family Weekend. Having it be abandoned would be very unsatisfying from a narrative perspective. (Though so would having rocks be dropped on a random main character. It’s a double whammy)
On a tangential note, I’m actually really glad we’re not going to see death as a character resolution in this series. Death in fiction is so often just a way to dramatically put a character on a bus, so I feel like I’m able to safely be more invested in the characters’ storylines no matter how dark they get.
@Spencer
“How does Ethan getting close to another dude make Danny jealous?”
I could draw pictures. they might include Penises.
“That’s literally what he’s stated he wants to happen.”
Yup. and people always like it when they get what they want?
“He wants Ethan to be taken up by somebody else so he can stop feeling guilty for being attracted to him.”
Yes, but thats irrelevant. They are going to be togther and for that Danny must break his serial monogamist streak.
Remember who we are dealing with. Its Danny
hes not that self-aware. Hes not even Yaoi-genre savvy
He thinks Seeing Ethan partnered will stop his attraction and temptation. Thats isnt how the world works. It isnt how male-male attraction works. Even in a partnered Bi guy. Especially in a suppressed closeted bi-guy. He doesnt have a handle on his attractions, they way he does with women. Thats why hes trying to set up Ethan. Make sense.
Yes, that’s why I said the real issue is that Danny needs to deal with his inability to just let himself acknowledge his attraction to other people without thinking it makes him a cheater.
Him putting Ethan with somebody isn’t going to solve the real issue but it isn’t going to drive Danny into a jealous frenzy over somebody he doesn’t want to be attracted to.
“They are going to be together ‘
Thats from Word-of-God , not me. Seriously, Deal.
‘and for that Danny must break his serial monogamist streak.’
“Yeah fuck that”
Well thats just Plot-logic. Either he changes his dating behavior, or he gets dumped first. I’m Pro-character growth. YMMV
“Don’t even suggest that.”
You are coming Across a little …phobic.
“Danny is monogamous.” Yes BUt I said “serial-monogamy” which is actually a different thing. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22serial+monogamy%22
And serial-monogamy can often be dysfunctional and even abusive. It isnt automatically a nice thing.
“These aren’t contradictory and screw you for even suggesting it”
or what exactly?
( Did not know you were the Sexual-Orientation Police. Im gonna need to see your badge, Ossifer )
Or Bi people who are openly NOt-monogamous, arent equally worthy of your support and respect?
( Tell me? Did it hurt fallin off that high horse? )
lets flip those words:
“Danny is” STRAIGHT. Danny is monogamous. These aren’t contradictory and screw you for even suggesting it.”
See how paranoid and Hysterical that sounds?
Its equally paranoid to say that about Bi people. Demanding people fit one arbitrary stereotype to avoid another , is still bias. Its Not moral superiority.
Unless your Promised “screw” comes with a streak dinner and an apology, you can shove your biphobic pro-monogamist heteronormative propaganda where only a good prostrate tickler can reach. Metaphorically speaking, Officer.
When Ethan/Danny happens… ( per the author! ) please ping me so I can read your tears. Oh, and please write more about “Dannys Creampuff and Ethans filling.” You have meant that in a biphobic or Yaoi-phobic way, But I totally dug it, an an unironic way. Just like Danny would.
I got to the part where you insisted that slamming your objectifying shit was biphobic of me, so I think I’m just gonna skip dignifying whatever other tripe you want to toss out.
I think Adam meant to say: “Danny would have been perfect for killing off. But now there is a potential storyline in the work for his relationship with Ethan, so you cant kill him off”
Ah. Weird thing to say though. Because even if he had no interest in Ethan, there’s still a potential storyline with his continuing relationship with Amber/Amazi Girl. (Which is not in the healthiest place considering what she said after the party). And his interactions with Sal possibly coming between him and Amber.
Would you really rather go to the Browns for 3-10 months then kill off the Squirrel? Its not even a real squirrel.
its not even a gay squirrel with superpowers. It doesnt even Transform into a robot. If the squirrel must die to save us all, then I say its imaginary life was well spent.
Not entirely wrong. I meant less than that , and a lot more.
I was speaking in the third-person about fandom tastes ,
and hypocrisy excluding my own.
“Danny would have been perfect for killing off ( As the fandom— excluding me — hated him) ”
The rest was a riff of the movies Heathers . ( see my explanation above )
So I did mean to say that. It was also sly pointing out fandom hypocrisy. I LOVE that the fandom loves Danny now as a bi Guy.
But the hatred toward Danny prereveal, ( and the vast unwarranted hatred for Becky! ) show a tremendous bias against characters that mildly break sexual heteronormative stereotypes. It shows the fandom is very very uncomfortable with straight men being mildly sensitive or emotional or unsure of themselves. And an enthusiastic Coming Out-and-Openly proud Lipstick Lesbian, inspires raw hatred from the fandom ( NO, not from me. )
Dannys angst and insecurities are now allowed because he not straight.
But what if he had none? What if Danny was angst-free , dumped Amazigirl as easily as Dorothy let him go, and proudly went after dudes the way Joe likes women?
i think the fandom might turn on him again.
( But Plenty of people would still pay Slipshine to read “Danny Downloads Grindr and puts a sock on his door” . Including Amber )
Why would he dump Amazi Girl just because he was bi? I mean people would dislike him again because that would be a pretty nonsensical thing to do. He’s still into Amazi Girl/Amber
In any case I thought the turnaround on the opinion of Danny started not when he was revealed to be bi, but when he found out Amazi Girl and Amber were one and the same, and when he helped Sal with math.
‘Why would he dump Amazi Girl just because he was bi?”
Easy. I was writing from outside-the-text. Plot exigencies.
Danny was written ( i read from willis somewhere )
specifically to give Ethan someone to have e relationship with.
That implies this Amber/Ethan/Amazi-girl has a shelf life. They will expire.
( Unless they go Poly and have 3 somes. I am totes OK with that . )
But there are some inside-the-texts reasons. Danny doesnt seem to have as strong self-control toward M/M attraction as M/F, and he is uncomfortable with this. Danny is used to being able to easily turn down temptation ( Billy ) and being judgmental when others dont. His attraction to Ethan undermines this. Hes not comfortable with Ethan being gay and single because he wants to act on it. I think this is realistic.
Its not uncommon for Bi people to experience attraction to different genders differently, both in quality and in character.
Its satisfying and safe to pretend that BI people have fully equal attractions in equal ways to both genders . But i think thats rare.
You are right about the point of turnaround. But It turned it a rocket in the other direction , at Ethan fantasy tackle.
Willis, Please Please Please Pleeeeez one day
make this the the title of the promised Danny/Ethan Slipshine :
“Jesus fucking Christ. I shouldn’t need to explain this.
We’re seriously not going to fucking see Danny leave Amber **just** to ride Ethan’s dick.”
From an out of text standpoint Danny was written as bi to give Ethan a possible love interest. That doesn’t mean he has to be Ethan’s love interest. Ethan could end up with a new character. Or he could end up with nobody at all.
We were promised a Slipshine too .
They are freshmen in college. People break up, fuck new people, and get back together all the time.
Danny didnt have to discover he was Bi through his attraction to Ethan.
It doesnt logically and necessarily follow Willis making Danny Bi , to give Danny a possible love interest.
So no, you are correct this slash doesnt have to happen — but hey, promised Slipshine.
( Its happening )
There is a significant group of people who feel that anyone who is not lesbian, gay or transgendered is unworthy and should either be severely suppressed and/or killed, depending on the extremism of their particular segment of the movement. To these people, any expression of affection between people of the opposite sex, or people who are comfortable with the gender they were born with, is revolting and disgusting.
Yes, this does actually exist. No, I am not joking.
Well, there definitely is a lot of bi-erasure in the gay community, especially concerning bisexual men and women with opposite sex partners, but it’d be wrong to discount the transphobia in it as well.
Bigotry is stinkin’ bigotry, and it is all evil, and there is no justification for any group or person who has been the victim of bigotry doing that same evil to others.
Yeah bigotry comes from all places, but it’s unfair to say that all bigotry is as equally damaging. Errant tumblr posts about how somebody wants to kill all white men isn’t equivalent to actual systematic oppression felt by groups in history.
A person who has been victimized by bigotry, who goes and victimizes another person with their bigotry, is MORE evil than the bigot who doesn’t know better. That errant tumblr post comes from someone who has experienced prejudice and now wants to visit that evil on others by murdering them; and you’re right, it’s not equivalent, IT IS WORSE.
There is some excuse for prejudice displayed by those who do not know any better. But those who do know better, and do it anyway? They are not activists. They are terrorists.
If you mean me as the OP, then No.
Im glad You support LGBTQI people But …
Im not calling anyone a terrorist.
I havent read the Tumblr in question. If they have committed mass murder for the the purposes of terrorizing for political gain, then they are terrorists.
Otherwise:
All Humans have Biases. Its a biological fact. We are tribal animals at heart.
Being a member of a marginalized group gives minor insight into sterotyping, and social exclusion. BUt It doesnt magically turn people into
Super-Buddhas.
By Holding marginalized people to a higher standard then everyone else, you are punching down. Bigotry is bad, but all biases arent created equal. Your own double-standards are evidence of that.
So self-refuting and ridiculous. YMMV But Im not judging you. No one is perfect. Humans are flawed.
For every Professor X there is a Magneto . OK magneto is a terrorist. Maybe hes a bad example. We need our Martin Luther Kings, and we need our Malcolm X’s
I mean, I like Danny. I like him a lot more knowing he’s bi and seeing him clumsily stumble his way through his sexuality like the clueless berk that he is, desperately trying to make sense of something that can be explained in a single sentence because it’s all so painfully real.
I’m the first person to rail against the way certain commenters sexually objectify Danny and act like his entire validity as a character is by being a cream doughnut aching for some Ethan filling, and I’ll wear that like a badge because fuck that noise, but there’s more to him than that. He matters more than just being Ethan’s future waifu.
Ive always liked him, too but…
I had something to say about you not taking away my Danny creampuff,
But your description gave me a boner at “Ethan filling” and I forgot what it was. Thats a talent.
“Danny would have perfect Before you gave him a soul with that Ethan Slash.”
@Spencer
“What the hell does that mean?”
2 things
It was referring to the fact the vast majority of the fandom hates Danny * ( or did pre Ethan Slash ) . It was palpable. Willis Jokes about it all the time.
Maybe they dont teach Heathers at School anymore with the Shootings, and what not not.
If you did this further explained Heathers Ironicly invokes “bury Your Gays” Trope. and suddenly the dead homophobic footbal jocks ( now seen as lovers ) are given a beautiful memorial as deeply sensitive souls.
So from there I am pointing out Fandom Hypocrisy which is nonetheless social progress. This is a an inverted reflection of Heathers.
The Fandom would have preferred Danny Dead ( a bI dude, who was always written as such in DOA ) when they thought he was straight. Yet Partly this hate for Danny inverting male stereotypes. He become fully beloved and embraced by the fandom upon the Bi reveal.
This is an inversion of the Classic “Bury Your Gays”
But i thought just riffing on Heathers would say all that. YMMV
*Not Me. I think I got accused of being an MRA once, because Ive always liked him.
I meant that tongue-in-cheek ,
But It was a dorm showing actually, and
School: It was one the one that inspires Ninja Turtles.
By the way, seriously dont “Go tunneling” . I almost drowned )
This is how it reads to me, too. Now, Joc will be showing up in this arc, we know that from a preview panel… Of her and John in a car, so I’m guessing she got a lift from him to the ‘rents place.
IIRC Jocelyne mentioned that she doesn’t make a lot of money, so she probably doesn’t have a car and almost certainly lives alone since she’s also a graduate.
I’m not looking forward to the next couple of chapters. The titles fill me with dread.
“That Perfect Girl” – We know Joyce is going to visit her parents, Bible-thumpers in a similar vein to Ross. I get the feeling they’re going to try some kind of Bible-based homebrew ‘therapy’ on Joyce, possibly even some kind of reprogramming.
“When God Closes The Door” – Their efforts are going to fail. Spectacularly. Joyce might even get similarly disowned or rejected by her parents.
I see fire and flames ahead. Lets hope Joyce can make it through them.
I think it’s less a matter of “too soon” than Joyce having had so many certainties upended that she’s not at all sure they wouldn’t shoot Becky. Nothing in her world is certain anymore. Nothing at all.
And for all that, I think Becky’s being horribly naive, willing to walk back into that community and environment and assuming that no one else will attempt to harm her.
Just thinking of this now, but is Joyce’s splinted arm the same one that was injured at the party? If so, that moment of looking at it might be a little more significant…
That’s not really a coincidence that needs meta-explanation. Joyce is right-handed, so she naturally defaults to doing things with that hand, including decking a butthole or cutting a bongo.
Not that that necessarily invalidates the meta-explanation.
Becky’s missing some vital information here. She doesn’t know how much like Toedad Joyce’s mom sounded in that last conversation. She thinks she’s saying “being with your folks can’t be as bad as what we just went through” but instead she’s reminding Joyce that yes it can.
Darn it, Dina…
TOO SOON
Willises have not had a nap
[I just wanted to see if the strip updated “on time” today and then ended up wandering in stupid late, oops]
Actually, it seems like Billie could get her wish if Becky (and others?) instigate a few more Joyce-BSoDs

Aw, someone give Joyce a hug 🙁
It wont be me doing it, that would only push her over the edge.
Why did Asuka steal Mari’s glasses?
As payback for damaging her Eva.
Don’t push Joyce, cause she’s close to the edge…
Yeeeeeaaaaaaah. No.
Becky’s ready to throw herself on literally every grenade.
but Joyce won’t do the same
Her eyes are open.
But why were they open?…….Ooooo
So long as it’s not a gun! AYOOOOO
Dina sees more than she lets on!
And Becky has apparently provided remarkably detailed teaching. Wish someone would do that for me.
Dina sees what everyone else sees. The only difficulty she has is with an ever-changing context. I think that’s why she said she likes dinosaurs so much. They’re a fixed point in history, no moving parts.
No moving parts you say: *points at feathered dinos*
Even though the reality is fixed, what we know about it is changing all the time.
Because there are a grand total of 45 people in the world who are that old, and most of them are Japanese.
I am 30
I grew up watching The Land Before Time
ya whippersnapper
also I thought people thought brontosauruses were a thing because some asshole stuck a skull from a whateverthefuckosaurus onto a brachiosaurus’s neck
Also, I’m 39 in just under a month and a half, young’n.
That Brontosaurus poster I had is older than you are.
This also explains why she calmed down so much after hiding under a jacket at Joyce’s party.
becky oh my god
Don’t worry, Becky. I laughed!
I heh’d a bit. ^__^
I haw’d
I hee’d and then cringed.
I probably would’ve laughed without remorse if I was there to witness that exchange instead of just reading about it.
That’s called a “Cards Against Humanity” laugh.
By me.
I call it that.
Ah, the “I’m a horrible person and I can’t help it” laugh. A classic of the genre.
I smiled a bit at the self-deprecating humor.
Aw, poor Joyce! *giggle*
I’m interested to know if Joyce can convince her parents about Becky.. or if she’ll find herself being shipped off to Anderson to straighten her out.
Becky got shipped off to Anderson and it didn’t work out (yes it did).
“straighten”
Ah haaa.
Perfect gravatar // text match.
She’d probably be allowed to finish the semester, otherwise her parents are going to be out a chunk of change and Joyce would be a semester behind.
Joyce’s parents love her enough to sacrifice that money (and her education) to keep her on the right path! Such good parents.
Who in the cast has blackmail material on important university officials?
Did you mean: “How else but Mike has blackmail material on important university officials?” ?
*Who* dammit.
The Walkertons, Mrs. Walkerton was in a relationship/married(?) with the dean before her current marriage.
I’m not entirely sure how aware Joyce is of those options.
There’s someone there who needs a new roommate…
Wow, Becky went full-er Walky. At least Walky saw it coming and stopped himself.
Is a FullWalky anything like a FullMcIntosh?
The only way she could be more Walky would be banging with Dorothy.
Dotty would need more meat on them bones before that could ever be a possibility.
Ah, true, Becky did mention something about that.
She and Walky DO get along freakishly well.
I saw that it was related to GamerGate and noped the fuck outta there. Going full Walky mostly involves being almost completely insensitive to sensitive shit.
wtf ?
I just figured that Babies McIntosh and Full McIntosh were much the same thing.
Oh fucking. I. *Ragequits*
Uh. Bah. Let’s leave those guys in their dark, smelly swamp.
It’s Babies McIntyre.
Opps All these McNames look alike to me.
Becky is like Walky without the brakes.
Oh my. That face.
I’m a terrible person, because I’m laughing my ass off at the last panel.
Yes we are.
I’m starting to suspect that Willis has bad things happen to Joyce just so he can draw her reaction faces.
Kinda unrelated but you guys should look at all of my comments with a * starting on

“Sycoruew”?
But what does it mean?!
So I was supposed to trawl throught the comments, pick out and note the first letters of particular posts, and unscramble them to get an acrostic that told me to get screwed?
Don’t give up your day job.
they were already in order
Everybody’s got to have a hobby.
Yeah, but I can think of better hobbies, like train spotting or nose picking.
So Joyce is still capable of making a face like that. Good to know. Now scandalize her more!
Becky, you’ve grown on me for the past few arcs,
but don’t you ever suggest anything so fucking stupid ever again.
Fuckity fuck fuck fuck
Becky grew on you? You can get a cream for that.
Becky grew on Dina’s icon and there was cream EW C’MON JUST NO.
(all’s fair between consenting adults, but dude, not in the comments section, I don’t wanna watch!)
You got the wrong pun.
*Remembered Leela’s talking boil*
…
*imagined Becky with Craig Ferguson’s voice*
Everything on the planet can be improved with Craig Ferguson’s voice.
That hand has been through some shit.
By November 20XX I anticpate it’s gonna get cut off.
And then she will do THIS!
Oh shit, just remembered my “Ash vs Evil Dead” backlog.
You know you are a badass when your hand is replaced with a medieval prosthesis.
So she’s a Skywalker?
You know what the Good Book says: “If your hand offends you, cut it off.” (Yes, really.)
“…and replace it with a mechanical prosthesis.”
It’s right there. How could I have missed it, this whole time?
Perfect gravitar for that comment.
“Dina, you have it wrong. I said, ‘This FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE indicates a premature employment of self-referencial humor to ease tension.’ Remember, Faaaaaaaaaaaaace.”
Becky wasn’t there when Billie said that <_<
It’s called “Willing suspension of disbelief”
Also maybe I should just be ashamed of myself for my failure.
You probably need to get an estimate for repair work on that there suspension.
Forgive me, those jokes just come to me ever since I became a dad.
Oh, no! What’s it going to do to Willis?
Oh ya I want to know is the same hand Joyce broke the same one she cut busting up Ryans face? that hand has been through some shit.
Looks like it might be. It’s probably her dominant hand, so it would make sense that she’d rely on it to fight. Gonna make taking notes hell though.
Yes. Right hand both times.
She needs the other one to hold a humorously large calculator.
It’s so rare that I understand non-SP! Walkyverse references. I’m so happy right now.
I seem to be missing something. Why does Joyce have to visit home this weekend?
I’m guessing she “has” to. Like, her parents insisted on ot and she complied.
Hasn’t been mentioned. Presumably her mom invited her and she agreed before having second thoughts.
Most probably “invited”‘ her after listening to her voice message.
The visit is this weekend in-comic, which is the first weekend in October.
It’s probably a mandatory visit after the abduction and subsequent events. I’m sure they have the prayer circle on standby.
Joyce needs a hug and a cookie.
It won’t solve her problems, but it sure as heck wouldn’t hurt.
I think someone’s going to have to reboot Joyce. She appears to have crashed.
Maybe she’ll get a system update from her mom.
That update would be incompatible with the ones she’s recently received. And I don’t thinks it’s possible to roll back to Joyce 1.0.
Joyce has already been rebooted once.
Boots. Groan.
(Technically since she wasn’t wearing boots before, she was just booted, not rebooted.)
However, someone should “apply” those boots to Becky for that next to last panel line. Becky and Joyce are definitely operating “out of phase”, resulting in system lock-up.
Re: rebooting. In the DoA comments section, we have strict rules about nitpicking. Namely, we always do it!
🙂
And Becky literally talked about rebooting Joyce when she first saw her new hairstyle.
At least all her new emotional problems are distracting her from her agoraphobia? :/
Quite.
Oh my GOD, Becky.
*trombone noises*
*Debbie Downer sad face*
*”Price is Right” fail horn*
*Captain Picard facepalm*
Also wow we are not even going to wait on confronting Joyce’s mom after the hole ” But he just thought he was doing the right thing” comment.
*looks for some John Lennon to put on the hacked Muzak*
So is Joyce looking at her injured hand because of simple physical pain, or as a symbol of her emotional pain?
Little of both?
wondering how is she going to punch her parents down with a mangled arm. maybe she will have to resort to kicks…
If he was charged with attempted murder, then he’s probably being held without bail.
Besides he got thrown from a moving car and then punched unconcious. He might not even be out of the hospital yet.
Bail is set at…One Hundred Billion Dollars and twelve frickin’ sharks with frickin’ laser beams on their frickin’ heads. *gavel noises*
I can see it being still a shock, and still a bit painful for both of them, but ultimately really really valuable in-family support for both of them
We see both Jocelyne and John eventually in the comic (not just in Patreon stuff).
They’re in a vehicle, going (I presume) home.
The eternal struggle of someone who uses gallows humor as a coping mechanism trying to interact with someone who does not.
I don’t think Joyce’s dad could possibly-
…
oh who am I kidding, after the Gunman, who knows what could happen?
Joyce believes New Testament trumps Old. She said so when talking about homosexuality.
Here’s Joyce on Testaments:
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-5/02-threes-a-crowd/applicable/
To be fair, it kinda does. I mean, Jesus said he wasn’t coming to remove the Law, but he also said he was there to fulfill it. And then said that “Love your neighbor shall be the whole of the Law.”
The old testament has some stuff in it that’d be relevant to Christians, but it’s also chock full of things that are completely incompatible, impractical, and indeed several things that are literally exclusive to Jews.
What exactly does it mean to fulfill a law, and how exactly is it different than abolishing it? I’ve never really understood that distinction.
That… didn’t really address the part that Willis bolded there.
Eventually there will be a scene where Ross and Blaine team up. They will Run into Danny and Joyce leading to
Joyce: Ross!
Danny: Blaine!
Both:Who?
or at least I really hope so
Then Amazi-Girl shows up and says: “Dads..why is it dads again?!”
Dina: Yes. That is what I said.
Spit that foot out THIS INSTANT, Becky!
Becky should probably be going to La Porte anyway; maybe she can retrieve her social security card from her presumably unoccupied house.
Good thought.
Good point.
It’s kinda fun that La Porte litterally means “the door” in french.
If it’s the La Porte I live close to, the French trappers and traders were pretty literal when they named places like it, it being “the door” you needed to pass through to get to a rich trapping area in the mountains. It nowadays is famous for being full of a gruesome mix of religious bigots and meth-heads.
heh.
Well, I don’t think we have any mountains in Northern Indiana. According to Wikipedia: “French travelers or explorers so named the area after discovering a natural opening in the dense forests that used to exist in this region, providing a gateway to lands further west.”
Holy Dooley!
Can those figures be right?
“took a shellacking”, not “to a shellacking”.
Do you suppose that the “none” figure includes people who declined to answer?
Makes the chapter title after this one (‘When God Closes the Door’) a bit of a dark pun.
Dieu ferme La Porte, hein ?
its never too soon
Tasteless. But also priceless.
It’s official. Now in love with Becky.
Who isn’t?
Me? I find Becky kind of annoying. I’m all about Joyce.
Yes. I’d be saying snarky things about Becky’s perkiness and boundless energy if she didn’t deserve slack these days for all the trauma she has had lately.
Joyce is trying to deal with the trauma inward, Becky deals with it outward. Both ways are hard on those around, but as you said, both deserve slack.
Becky, we all have different ways of dealing with stressful situations. I can see yours is humor… very dark humor (the best kind, IMHO). It seems Joyce wasn’t ready for that…
trauma hand is getting less subtle. I really like this Becky though.
She’ll evolve.
Wow! Becky seems to have a psyche made of soft foam rubber! No matter what happens, after the load is gone, she springs back into shape! Does anything keep her down for long?
Y’know, the gathering at Casa Brown promises to be… interesting in a certain, potentially apocalyptic manner.
I think Hank will listen to Joyce’s problems and understand her. Carol on the other hand…not so much.
Oh CRAP, you guys. YOU GUYS.
Just thumbing through the archives…
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2014/comic/book-5/01-when-somebody-loved-me/angel/
She asked God to show her if she was doing something wrong.
I think he’s shown her an awful lot.
Uh-huh. She asked for this. All of it. Clearly and directly.
Poor kid.
Damn you! I re-read half the story because I clicked on that link U__U
And I need to study.
ZOMFG,
No, Willis I cannot take a full weekend on DOA time, at Joyces parents house.
Lets just not go to Joyces House till 2017
Okay not touching the whole “kill off a character I don’t care about for drama” thing. (Though if nobody cares, it’s not very dramatic)
We are probably seeing Joyce head home. The preview panels show her meeting up with her dad. (This happens late January, early February). But that doesn’t mean we have 10 straight months at th Brown home. Among other things, most the other characters will still be at IU. There will still be plots to check in on there. And besides, Joyce will only spend one full day at home. Thats not 10 months even at this comic’s pace
Maybe she goes with Becky to the Ross home, and helps her sort it.
They could stay there, if the Brown home is too tense.
So Amber and Amazi-Girl become the Dumbiverse version of Jean Grey and Phoenix? Be afraid … be very afraid.
Im terrified of her anyways
I’m guessing they meant having some alternative plot to Joyce Family drama for the foreseeable future.
I do actually want Sayid to become a more prominent character, though. He’s 2kewl.
This comic has its own style of putting characters on a bus.
@Spencer
Make sense.
TLDR That will backfire.
Oh I completely skipped this part.
“They are going to be togther and for that Danny must break his serial monogamist streak.”
Yeah fuck that. Don’t even suggest that. Danny is bisexual. Danny is monogamous. These aren’t contradictory and screw you for even suggesting it.
Okay and this part:
“Danny would have perfect Before you gave him a soul with that Ethan Slash.”
What the hell does that mean?
I think Adam meant to say: “Danny would have been perfect for killing off. But now there is a potential storyline in the work for his relationship with Ethan, so you cant kill him off”
Ah. Weird thing to say though. Because even if he had no interest in Ethan, there’s still a potential storyline with his continuing relationship with Amber/Amazi Girl. (Which is not in the healthiest place considering what she said after the party). And his interactions with Sal possibly coming between him and Amber.
So, what, if the bi dude isn’t boffing a guy suddenly he doesn’t matter? Unless he’s queer in a specific manner then why even have him?
Hey, it’s not my opinion. I dont want anyone killed off. 🙂
Would you really rather go to the Browns for 3-10 months then kill off the Squirrel? Its not even a real squirrel.
its not even a gay squirrel with superpowers. It doesnt even Transform into a robot. If the squirrel must die to save us all, then I say its imaginary life was well spent.
O Squirrel we loved you sooo much! Thank you for your gift. I’ll miss that poor dead squirrel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ff_CZhqao0
Experiencing attraction for another person doesn’t mean Danny’s about to leave Amber.
Jesus fucking Christ. I shouldn’t need to explain this. We’re seriously not going to fucking see Danny leave Amber just to ride Ethan’s dick.
@Spencer,
So, you think Danny cant “Danny It Up” his relationship with Amber so he can Danny Up Ethan?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1uTsqJVAeo
Willis, Please Please Please Pleeeeez one day
make this the the title of the promised Danny/Ethan Slipshine :
“Jesus fucking Christ. I shouldn’t need to explain this.
We’re seriously not going to fucking see Danny leave Amber **just** to ride Ethan’s dick.”
Spencer, i am expectin much more than that ,too.
Ooo a shower scene? Weve been teased on that. Its checkovs shower boner.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1uTsqJVAeo
Youlll come to to see it was for the greater good, when Amber is with Jacob. LOL
Bigotry is stinkin’ bigotry and it is ALL EVIL.
Ugh, and I forgot to add the part where I was gonna say that I don’t know if this represents OP’s attitude or not. Sorry about that.
It means that Danny hasn’t actually changed at all, but people like him now because they want to see him fuck a dude.
@Spencer
“What the hell does that mean?”
2 things
It was referring to the fact the vast majority of the fandom hates Danny * ( or did pre Ethan Slash ) . It was palpable. Willis Jokes about it all the time.
And it was a Reference to this:
Heathers!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnAU7m7JRKU
I’m wondering what school you went to where they showed Heathers. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb if I were to say that’s atypical.
I meant that tongue-in-cheek ,
But It was a dorm showing actually, and
School: It was one the one that inspires Ninja Turtles.
By the way, seriously dont “Go tunneling” . I almost drowned )
damnit dina
Came across Devils Backbone by The Civil Wars.
Seems oddly appropriate, almost.
We’re going to visit chateau Brown? That means we get to see Jocelyn again! *squee*
Does Jocelyn live with her parents? Kinda had the impression she was living on her own, and was only with them for FFW.
I think she does, but she’d turn up for a family get together
This is how it reads to me, too. Now, Joc will be showing up in this arc, we know that from a preview panel… Of her and John in a car, so I’m guessing she got a lift from him to the ‘rents place.
IIRC Jocelyne mentioned that she doesn’t make a lot of money, so she probably doesn’t have a car and almost certainly lives alone since she’s also a graduate.
Here’s the preview panel (and it’s John Brown driving, so probably his car).
I wish people wouldn’t use John’s full name. It gets me earwormed.
His truth is marching on!
Hopefully his body shan’t be a-mouldering in the grave.
When they don’t use his full name, it gets me confused, though.
There may be a great deal in that. Joyce has seen that she never really knew her community, and all her certainties are set on their ears.
And for all that, I think Becky’s being horribly naive, willing to walk back into that community and environment and assuming that no one else will attempt to harm her.
They could both stay at the Ross home, while testing the waters.
Just thinking of this now, but is Joyce’s splinted arm the same one that was injured at the party? If so, that moment of looking at it might be a little more significant…
Yes, her right hand both times.
That’s not really a coincidence that needs meta-explanation. Joyce is right-handed, so she naturally defaults to doing things with that hand, including decking a butthole or cutting a bongo.
Not that that necessarily invalidates the meta-explanation.
Poor Joyce this has been a year full shocking trama
A month. A *month* full of trauma. It leaves room for a loooooot more
Or a nice long period of healing and getting herself back together.
You seem to have forgotten whose comic you’re reading.
Remember Becky used to tease Joyce all the time. So this would be like recalling happier days — except Becky sees she’s gone a bit too far.
Well, at least it seems like Joyce is sorta getting over the trauma of nearly being… yeah….
In my head, Dina sounds like a cross between Starfire and BMO.
No idea why I felt the need to share this.
Becky’s missing some vital information here. She doesn’t know how much like Toedad Joyce’s mom sounded in that last conversation. She thinks she’s saying “being with your folks can’t be as bad as what we just went through” but instead she’s reminding Joyce that yes it can.
Too true!
