is she wearing a magic dress, b/c in panel 3 she’s pulling on the shirt w/ the dress still over her shoulders, and in panel 4 she’s slipping the whole thing off. i am impressed though
She removed her arms from the straps with the orange shirt on and stepped out of the dress. Probably so she wouldn’t show her body to Sarah (for some reason, not like Sarah is into chicks)
Modesty is modesty. It’s not about whether Sarah would be interested or not (Joyce probably can’t even conceive of the possibility), it’s about not showing your body to anyone.
Girl’s have magical powers and can take things off without removing upper layers of garments. Useful at camp and college and other instances you share space with people.
Yeah… I was in orchestra in high school. My dad frequently complained about the skill with which dozens of teen girls would entirely change their clothes without revealing an inch of skin. My father: master of inappropriate.
I learned a similar trick from Mr. Bean. I can now divest myself of boxers of bathing suit without first removing my shorts. When long pants are involved, it gets a little trickier.
Doesn’t the fact that Joyce was wearing pajama shorts under her dress imply she may have had some rather lustful plans herself? At least she wasn’t carrying a toothbrush in her purse (that we know of).
Huh. Guess I was thinking along the lines of, she’s taking her pajamas with her in case she ends up spending the night at Joe’s place. Shows where my mind is.
Not likely but, it may have implied that she has some chub rub to fight. As a female with huge thighs, I will admit that I’d only wear a dress without bike shorts if I hated myself.
And the fact Joyce was bible thumping Joe the entire time and help Mike execute assault and battery, had NOTHING to do with the failed date… Oh yeah, it was completely Joe’s fault…
…nah. I don’t think so. It didn’t have to end as badly as it did (for which I also blame Joyce), but when one person is trying to get laid and the other person takes it as self-evident truth that Lust Is Bad, it will not end well.
I’m probably one of the only people who like Joyce.
I like to think it’s both their faults. If she wasn’t bible thumping Joe the whole time.. wanna bet he would have just been hinting at wanting to screw her brains out the whole time?
Her main problem was thinking that she could change Joe. And hiring Mike. It might have gone better if Ruth had been available.
He can be blamed for what he did do. If the sign says, “TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT”, you don’t keep walking onto the property, especially not after you’ve been shot already for that, without sharing some responsibility for the consequences.
EVERYTHING that happened to him was foreseeable, avoidable, and a consequence of his actions. It doesn’t matter that the consequences were unreasonable. Right of way is irrelevant if ceding it would have avoided a collision.
He didn’t do anything. They were chatting. He kept getting punched by someone Joyce invited along. Then she helped to punch him just because Mike said Joe did something. Joe didn’t do anything wrong. At all.
Intentions matter, but he didn’t even GET that far. She didn’t give him the chance to even do anything inappropriate. Joe cannot be blamed for anything here.
I think Mike was the issue. Someone else probably would have let Joe get away with looking at Connie’s rack, and Joyce didn’t notice that until Mike pointed it out. Joe probably wouldn’t have gotten any, but he could have had an interesting conversation with Joyce on abstinence vs casual sex.
Oh, it still would have ended badly. The “interesting conversation” would have quickly degenerated into a loud argument. Still, I don’t doubt that you’re right, that adding a violent psychopath to the mix made everything worse. It generally does.
Ooooh the memories. If you ever want to see funny college kids. Watch a group of hormone ranpaging, teens at a religious school. They joke but an MRS degree is a common option. The utter rebelion from there parents. It starts with a hair cut for the girls them peircings, tatoos. Then touching with boys. Nieve but funny.
Joyce just needs to meet someone (ahem, Walky) that she can slowly work out of her completely sociopathic comfort zone.
That, or maybe wind up one of a multitude of wives in Utah.
In all seriousness, I want to see her redeemed, because her innocence isn’t inherently detracting to her character. It’s her bible-thumping, and complete disregard for the freedom of others not to believe.
I’m tempted to say she should honestly spend more time with Billie.
Kids like Joyce are trained to expect the easy, instant conversion. Ever read a Christian comic or (gods help you) a Chick Tract? In every single one, the conversion-target has never heard the Real Truth about Jesus, and why you should take Him as Your Personal Lord and Savior…if they’ve heard about him at all. That’s why Joyce honestly expected to score a conversion over dinner. It’s exactly as realistic as expecting to find a husband on your first date in college (possibly first date ever), which is, I suspect, the joke.
I went to a Christian high school. During one of our (mandatory) religion classes, we were taught and tested on a way to convert people. It basically was “This is The Truth, and why you should believe it.” As it relied heavily on the use of Bible passages, I’m still skeptical as to how useful it will ever be.
Not very, I would imagine. It’s based on a worldview where the Bible is the ultimate authority (whether or not you’ve actually read it, or know the context for the passages your preacher gives you), so someone who doesn’t accept the authority of the Bible makes the whole thing fall apart.
Strangely, I’m neither annoyed nor surprised that after the fact, everything is 100% Joe’s fault. Perhaps it’s that Joe is at this very moment saying that everything was 100% Joyce’s fault (instead of the more accurate 97%). This is human nature, folks. Given that there are no longer aliens mind-controlling people around here you can’t expect *anybody* to own up and say, “oh dear, I guess I shouldn’t have brought a psychopathic/dropped my perfect gentleman act for five seconds” immediately after an off-pissing altercation.
It will be interesting to hear what Sarah thinks about how the evening *actually* went, when/if she finds out. Since Joe really didn’t (have a chance to) do anything wrong.
I am confused by your post….You first say everything was Joe’s fult and then you say that Joe didn’t do anything wrong….how can he be at fault if he did nothing wrong?
He’s saying that according to Joyce, Joe was 100% at fault and did plenty of things wrong. According to the poster’s point of view though, Joe didn’t actually do anything.
I think that’s a pen. It looks like she’s been working on homework. Probably would have been better to have had the pen in her hand. How’s she doing dialogue with a pen in her mouth? I know it’s possible, but it wouldn’t be clear.
Okay, so most people are down on Joyce for hiring Mike. Think about this: with how naive Joyce is, she probably didn’t expect Mike to actually have to punch anyone. She was probably just glad to not have to pay him. She probably thought that neither she nor Joe would do anything objectionable to where either of them would have to be punched. She probably also didn’t expect Mike to take his job so seriously or to be such a psychopath. Considering how limited her worldview is, I think that this option is a pretty good one.
Granted, she still shouldn’t have hired someone who would potentially slug her date, but I think considering Joyce’s worldview puts the situation into perspective.
I’m saying that initially she didn’t think anyone would have to be punched. Before finding out that Joe had oggled another girl, she even tried to get Mike to stop punching Joe. She joined in upon hearing that Joe had oggled the waitress when she was ticked off.
I think maybe Joe should’ve gone after the waitress instead of Joyce. They’d probably make a better pair.
Joyce is demonstrating Jean Cocteau’s adage that even the prettiest dresses are worn to be taken off, but I think Jean was implying more in the direction that Joe wanted than the one Joyce is displaying.
Again Joyce, your choice in men are going to leave you only with men who wouldn’t choose you. Lust is not the feeling of being attracted, it is the overabundance of that feeling dictating your actions. That’s like calling someone who eats dessert a glutton.
Just did a quick pass through the archives of “It’s Walky”, looking for an instance where Mike got his well-deserved beating (he really does get away with far too much). I found one, but the circumstances of “The Best I Could Do” were too tragic to really enjoy it. Anyway, as I was trawling, I remembered that DoA Joyce is the absolute soul of reasonableness and sanity compared to Joyce Prime. Holy crap.
What where expecting joyce, that he whas going to be the perfect gentlemen, searching for the one isn’t going to be as easy as finding him in the first date you have in college with some random dude you met yesterday.
For a romantic, she does not have a good concept of love
But pajama shorts are sexy 🙁
Then they are agents of lust!
So does this mean Mike has to punch the pajama shorts in the face? Or Joyce? Or Sarah?
Probably Joyce, but in the hip.
FARRUKON PAWUNCH!
Hip? Mike is nothing if not equal-opportunity (equal-enmity?), and he never misses a chance for a groin attack.
If your pants had a face I’d punch them in the groin?
is she wearing a magic dress, b/c in panel 3 she’s pulling on the shirt w/ the dress still over her shoulders, and in panel 4 she’s slipping the whole thing off. i am impressed though

Modesty is modesty. It’s not about whether Sarah would be interested or not (Joyce probably can’t even conceive of the possibility), it’s about not showing your body to anyone.
You’ve never seen a woman take off her bra without taking off her top?
nope, flashdance was never a movie i was interested in
Well played!
You, uh, put the shirt on, then pull the dress *down*. It’s not even a little magic.
Not magic?! You’ve ruined it for me. Forever.
i know, i was being sarcastic, but i should have put a link to http://www.dumbingofage.com/2010/comic/book-1/02-uphill-from-here/shower to show my sarcasm, i just forgot to
Great, now I’m hungry for a Hot Dog Firecracker.
Or 50 Hot Dog Firecrackers, perhaps.
I know you’re referring to whatever Sarah is chewing on, but what the heck is it?
So, whatever sympathy Joyce may have garnered from yesterday is now gone.
Doesn’t the fact that Joyce was wearing pajama shorts under her dress imply she may have had some rather lustful plans herself? At least she wasn’t carrying a toothbrush in her purse (that we know of).
The question is: how innocent is Joyce *really* ? Looks like she might actually “struggle” with lust after all.
Unlikely.
The truth: Camel-toe is a serious problem, and who knows how many lecherous midgets, insects or amoebas might catch a glimpse up her dress.
….She was wearing entirely non sexy baggy shorts under her dress, as opposed to sexy underwear or a thong or NOTHING….
She was being one of those girls who wear shorts under their dresses because they expect boys to peek or flip the skirts.
No, she was not having lustful plans for the evening. If anything, she sabotaged preemptively before even hiring Mike.
Nah, I don’t think so. What if there’d been a breeze? Someone might have seen her unmentionables otherwise.
Nah, I think it was more a matter of modesty. Pajama shorts preclude any possibility of flashing panties.
Agreed. I always wear shorts under skirts if I can get away with it, because then I don’t have to worry about sitting in a “lady like” position.
Huh. Guess I was thinking along the lines of, she’s taking her pajamas with her in case she ends up spending the night at Joe’s place. Shows where my mind is.
That would have been a situation where pyjamas were useless and inappropriate, though/
Not likely but, it may have implied that she has some chub rub to fight. As a female with huge thighs, I will admit that I’d only wear a dress without bike shorts if I hated myself.
Sarah is going to have the most annoying conversation with Joe sometime the next day.
i harbor perverse sexual lust for that dress.
We all do.
With our penises.
Especially the women.
Whew! She got off the elevator.
I gotta say, that dress DOES look pretty good on her bedroom floor as well.
Oh no, Joyce has joined a group of possibly hundreds! She is a never-nude! Dun-Dun-Dun!
And the fact Joyce was bible thumping Joe the entire time and help Mike execute assault and battery, had NOTHING to do with the failed date… Oh yeah, it was completely Joe’s fault…
To be fair, that’s what ruined the date for her. Anyways, it was doomed to disaster from the start. The two of them had two very incompatible goals.
Yeah, but despite their conflicting views, they could have still had a good evening had Joyce not pushed her beliefs so violently hard.
…nah. I don’t think so. It didn’t have to end as badly as it did (for which I also blame Joyce), but when one person is trying to get laid and the other person takes it as self-evident truth that Lust Is Bad, it will not end well.
Is this the first use of “perverse sexual lust” in DoA?
Outside of the polls, I mean.
I think so.
You can’t blame a guy for something he might have done, but didn’t…
Oh, wait, he’s male, so I guess you can.
And exactly what *did* he do? Talk about something Joyce brought up?
And that’s not how fault and right of way works. Like, at all.

I’m thinking it’s a foregone conclusion that Joyce and Walky are getting together eventually. The question is when?
Give us the it’s walky couples and Jack will be satisfied.
And stop referring to himself in the third person.
I don’t think that’s a foregone conclusion at all. This is a new comic, and Willis seems to be setting out deliberately to do things differently.
Willis, we command you to put Joyce and Walky together.
NO! DON’T LISTEN TO JACK! WALKY x DOROTHY PLEASE!
Am I the only one who wants WalkyxMike, purely because the idea amuses the dark parts of soul?
You mean the first man you went on a date with in college is not the man you are going to marry? Joyce, you’re such a whore!
Didn’t even make him realize Jesus is the messiah. You fail as a Christian, Joyce. You. Fail.
Are you volunteering to tutor Joyce in the science of obtaining instant conversions?
Kids like Joyce are trained to expect the easy, instant conversion. Ever read a Christian comic or (gods help you) a Chick Tract? Aaaaand, most of my sympathy from the previous comic went out the window there. She doesn’t feel guilty at all it seems. -sighs-
Strangely, I’m neither annoyed nor surprised that after the fact, everything is 100% Joe’s fault. Ooooohh….that makes sense..Thanks!
Why does Sarah have a birthday cake candle in her mouth?
I think that’s a pen. It looks like she’s been working on homework. Probably would have been better to have had the pen in her hand. How’s she doing dialogue with a pen in her mouth? I know it’s possible, but it wouldn’t be clear.

Her first choice was Ruth, who was busy, I think she was looking for a certain quality that Mike provided
She, uh, joined him in the punching.
After something that violated her world view happened.
Ill go down on Joyce! Wait, thats not what you said.
Probably wouldn’t be a good idea anyway…she’d get Mike to punch you.

What? You don’t want ‘Hurricane Joyce’ to make an appearance in DOA?
Well, Mike did get beat up once after kicking a little girl:
http://www.itswalky.com/d/20011104.html
🙂
And he STILL won because he made a point with that kick.
More accurately, his point was made by receiving the beating…
Still more satisfying. Thanks for that, Cholma.
I would say that all of the human race harbors some form of perverse lust. Get over it.
I just noticed that she used the term PSL… isn’t that meta-comicing?
*Head Explodes*
HOW DID SHE TAKE OFF THAT DRESS AFTER PUTTING ON A SHIRT!?!?!!?!
“The pajama shorts keep the chastity belt from clanging when I sit down.”
What where expecting joyce, that he whas going to be the perfect gentlemen, searching for the one isn’t going to be as easy as finding him in the first date you have in college with some random dude you met yesterday.
