Good I was not the only one who went straight to the quadrants.
The real question is:
Is it blacker than the best hate ship, the eternal Dina x Billie?
Dina wishes to learn more about this thing called physical intimacy without the inherent risks of man sex, and Billie seemed an obvious test subject. Billie was drunk.
The hate comes entirely from Billie, as she can’t handle the completely detached way Dina approached the subject. She doesn’t want to be just a test subject to Dina, but in her self loathing (brought upon by Ruth breaking up with her after learning about the first encounter) she convinces herself that she doesn’t deserve any better.
Eventually Dina optimizes the procedure by use of tools and casts Billie aside as surplus to requirements. Her doctoral thesis on the subject enjoys widespread circulation among the academic community and lonely freshmen.
Though I don’t think Dina would want to avoid Xemnas, she seems to find new things very exhilarating even when they’re scary.
Although she may be steered otherwise because the social consciousness generally sees male sexuality as aggressive, which could be overbearing to someone inexperienced.
I think she’d consider intercourse with a woman first as means to understand her own sexual body and desires more.
Well things are picking up for Sal, while shes kinda missin one of her friends, her grades are up, and she found a new friend (now with benefits!) in… Blonde British Tutor Guy.
I think this interaction reflects the same Scrubs moment except after Janitor gets with Lady and sees JD as less urksome.
Plus honestly Sal has a misanthropic tendencies and prefers to keep a close circle of friends, as few understand her, while Sarah, is more misanthropic as she casually hates on her (best?) friend Joyce
The victory is already Sal’s. Her way of dealing with life’s b.s. is FAR more effective with getting anywhere in the adult world. Hell, it’s a feat for Sarah to at least be sitting it out rather than running after Jacob just because he’s with Raidah now. I’m guessing either her Pre-Law classes haven’t gotten past merits you can achieve by hitting the books alone, or I’ve LOVE to see how she’s getting by in those classes…
Getting arrested for holding up a conbini is a terrible way of dealing with your problems.
BTW, pre-law isn’t really a thing one takes courses in, because there aren’t any required courses for getting into lawschool. eg, http://www.hpplc.indiana.edu/
Sal’s victory is based on her *present* way of dealing with b.s. was what I was going on about. Both ladie’s ways are substandard, yes, but Sarah is starting to remind me of Danny at the beginning of the strip.
I’m under the impression that she told Jason sexy times were over and done with, and that didn’t seem to change when they ran into each other in the bar later. And would he even have her contact info? They were never dating or anything, just sexing it up after class.
Then again, she’s probably spending the night somewhere, hence the toothbrush.
Checking the tags, the only time the two have really interacted is the morning after the party, when Sal discouraged going to the police at all. Sarah has expressed a dislike of Sal before, so I’m not surprised their first conversation has them clash with each other.
Hopefully we’ll start to see some turn-around soon. Her misanthropy, even though it’s justified in some cases, limits her use as a character since having her interact with other characters will inevitably result in her getting annoyed with them.
Do people actually wear shirts which say things like “Fitness” across the front? And if the answer to that question is “yes,” then my follow-up question is, “to what end?”
Fitness shirt: For when you want people to know you workout or have plans to workout in the future…..or you just threw it on cause it’s like nine o’clock you were super hungover and honestly you didn’t even know you owed one.
People literally wear shirts with every goddamn thing you can imagine written on the front. My friend has a t-shirt that says ‘t-shirt’. I mean, honestly. I bet printed-with-words shirts are a million dollar industry xD

I haven’t seen “Every Goddamn Thing You Can Imagine” on a shirt, but that actually works pretty well too. Surprisingly, I’ve never seen an actuall “teh” shirt – Marten must have bought all of them.
Sal appears to know Joyce about as well as she knows anybody else. Considering how much Joyce has inserted herself into Sal’s life, Sal probably knows more about her than she does of almost any other classmate.
Well she got really drunk late Friday night. And it’s now Saturday night sometime after 9:00 pm. It’s probably safe to assume that she’s sobered up from that by now.
Now that I know that you can use “+” with tag URLs, maybe November 21, 2011. After re-reading that strip, I don’t think it counts, so this would be the first real interaction?
That strip happened three weeks ago in comic time. (Pajama Jeans took place on the first Saturday in comic, and the current storyline is on the fourth Saturday)
Sal: “why are you here? You have a party to go to.”
Sarah: “same reason you’re not at the party. Don’t think you’re not being weird and avoidant, too.”
Sal: “denial!”
Sarah: *sees right through you*
Sal: fuck it is unpleasant to have my bluff called on. I should avoid talking to you in the future.
Add some unfair Sal-shaming for not catering to Joyce’s wishes. Yes, she has some weird hero-worship thing going with Sal. Yes, that probably galls Sarah, who doesn’t like Sal much and is arguably more of a real hero for Joyce than anyone courtesy of the Ryan beatdown. But Sal never asked for any of it, and made her disinterest in Joyce’s friendship pretty clear from day one. Trying to dump that bit of drama on Sal is just unfair, and it’s no wonder she doesn’t like it much.
Really, I though the fact that Sal needed to remove her toothbrush from the bathroom and that she wasn’t planning on attending the party until she received a text from a ‘friend’ that Sarah inferred that Sal had hookup plans that were taking precedent over the, “Make Joyce feel safe about living on campus and interacting with people” party.
I think Sarah is either mad that Sal is participating in something selfish (In Sarah’s opinion not mine) rather than spending sometime doing something that would be so important to Joyce or just out of a general dislike for teenage dating/drama nonsense or possibly both.
Here’s another one. She’s wears her gloves in the bathroom. Does she wash her gloves after using the toilet? I only ask because they really standout when she’s in the bathroom. Does she take them off, wash her hands, then put them back on.
Ha! I never caught that! And actually, now that I think on it, Sal wasn’t wearing a bra when she jumped Jason the first time! Maybe she’s related to Kim.
Oh right, texting. No, you definitely can’t do that in a loud crowded party. It’s not like it’s the exact kind of scenario texting was invented for, no ma’am!
But Sarah seems honestly unhappy about being left alone. She just wants to avoid “drama” (which is, as it so often is, a codeword for “other people’s emotional development”)
And drama often involves no emotional development at all, or horrible results for people in the immediate vicinity who had nothing to do with it..
Acting responsible and mature is an important value for Sarah, and unfortunately, most college freshmen aren’t all that mature and responsible, meaning that she’s not going to get along all that well with any of these people. (Even Joyce, whom she basically recognizes as innocent and well-meaning.)
You can be unhappy about being alone without it being a good idea tto go hang out with people who value fundamentally different things than you do. If anything, I find that being among people who have very different values from myself to be more lonely than just being alone.
Yeah Joseph is right, Sarah seems lonley as fuck, but I think she also thinks she doesn’t deserve friends (Her self loathing is pretty evident) However, she can;t avoid Joyce, being her roomie and all, and she has had time to like her so she wants to help her and stuff. Aaaand I assume, espescially when her and joyce have a spat, she would like more friends. She just pushes people away because she thinks thats what she wants and will be easier, then kicks herself for both the attempt and for the pushing back
Being introverted does not make one immune to loneliness.
It just means they would like to talk to a single person (or perhaps a couple of people) instead of being surrounded by a dozen people to fill up their loneliness bar.
Sarah’s perfectly fine in crowds long term until she embarrasses herself and runs for it. Had Raidah and Jacob not shown up she likely would have stayed at the party the whole time, sarcastically commenting on everything.
Speaking as an introvert, that isn’t Sarah’s problem. She genuinely does want to connect with people, but she pushes them away because she’s been hurt, and she’s afraid of being hurt in return. Her flashback with Dana shows pretty obviously that, while Sarah isn’t a social butterfly or anything, she has fun when she goes out with friends.
Being introverted isn’t Sarah’s problem, it’s that she’s afraid to be friends with somebody for fear that it will blow up in her face. Bagge is right. Sarah wants to think she’s so amazingly above everything and has no time for childishness, and acts like she’s permitted to judge people around her with no concept of who they are.
She also seems to express her Hedgehog’s Dilemma in such an intense manner that it’s worrisome, in regards to her personal mental health. Misanthropic is fine, but if Sarah frequently says things like she does around the main cast to her professors, classmates, or basically everyone else….Well….Unwise for someone who wishes not to damage her own 4-year University prospects….
I think Sarah has good reason to be misanthropic. But, then so does Sal; but opposite reasons for it.
Sarah gets acted on, and got tired of it and backed off, she keeps her sanity by ignoring people.
Sal, does the acting, and doesn’t really care one way or other what other people think, Sarah does. imo.
There are instances in this world where two people just don’t get along with each other for no reason whatsoever. These two don’t seem to have any real reason to dislike each other, but then no reason to like each other either.
Comment on the t-shirt issue mentioned, yes people really wear them: the one I’m wearing now says “I’m only responsible for what I say, not what you hear.”
Also noticing that Sal seems to get very defensive easily. Mike’s (correct) guess at her doing Jason, her reaction when Danny first approached her, her talk with Walky after Freshmen Family Weekend, and now this.
Probably residual effect from growing up with overbearing favouritism-playing parents.
There’s good reason for her to be jumpy regarding Mike’s guess about Jason, whether she realizes it or not. He’s not the only one who’s in serious trouble if that ever gets to the Powers That Be. Undergrads who sleep with a TA in expectation of a better grade get expelled right quick. And expelled Sal is probably not going be welcomed back home – the Walkerton parents are fairly horrible toward her.
Am I the only one who read Sarah’s expression not as “Yeah right – you’re avoiding the party”, but rather, “Yeah right – a “friend”? Come on, it’s a booty call.”
I think it’s a “I’m calling bullshit” look. Pretty sure Sal went in to brush her teeth, but is making it seem like she’s going somewhere as an excuse, since Sarah is here.
Every time I see Sal’s tattoo I think of Anya Corazon from Marvel comics. She has a magical blue spider tattoo on her upper arm. Other side, but still. XD SAL IS SECRETLY A SUPERHERO?
That’s a random thought – Has anyone ever actually mapped out where everyone’s rooms are? I know Mr Willis is obviously the most likely to & the most qualified, but has ANYBODY had a go at it?
I don’t remember if an explanation has been given for the spider tattoo before, but I’m going to imagine Sal as a ghost member of the Phantom Troupe (http://hunterxhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Phantom_Troupe) now.
Strong Personalities Be Clashing.
Just cause Sarah’s avoiding an embarasing situation, while Sal tried quietly sneaking in only to be foiled by Sarah’s presence…
I don’t think they like each other.
But do they hate each other enough to consider hate sex?
I think Sal already has an ample amount of hate sex in her life.
Maybe that Satanic looking Christian gal who lives down the hall would be interested?
Nah. Joyce would rush in and club everyone all Auspisticism-like.
Good I was not the only one who went straight to the quadrants.
The real question is:
Is it blacker than the best hate ship, the eternal Dina x Billie?
Dina and Billie?
How does that even?
Dina wishes to learn more about this thing called physical intimacy without the inherent risks of man sex, and Billie seemed an obvious test subject. Billie was drunk.
The hate comes entirely from Billie, as she can’t handle the completely detached way Dina approached the subject. She doesn’t want to be just a test subject to Dina, but in her self loathing (brought upon by Ruth breaking up with her after learning about the first encounter) she convinces herself that she doesn’t deserve any better.

That’s pretty convoluted and fucked up.
Sounds about right though.

Although she may be steered otherwise because the social consciousness generally sees male sexuality as aggressive, which could be overbearing to someone inexperienced.

At last, the misanthropes collide. Will they form a misingularity, or merely destroy one another? Tune in tomorrow to find out!
I like to picture it being like that episode of Scrubs where Cox and the Janitor drink together and bond over how much JD annoys them.
Except in this case replace JD with Everyone.
SHoot I wasn’t implying that happened in Scrubs, I’m saying drawing a what-if parallel.
Also did that moment happen before Janitor was with Lady?
the Cox/Janitor moment happened 2 seasons before he met lady
and it wasn’t that he found JD less annoying, he just didn’t have time for plotting his schemes with Lady taking up so much of his time
One of her friends ? It’s cute how you use plural there.
And when misanthropes collide

Why does she need a toothbrush if she’s not in the bathroom?
To remove dog-poop from her boots maybe…
The hell do you use YOUR toothbrush for?
The usual reason to bring a toothbrush with you is because you’re planning over somewhere and you’re packing an overnight bag.
Gah. “planning on sleeping over somewhere”
Semen causes cavities.
You take that back! My dad was in the Navy!
Hope he’s got an excellent dental plan. You know how lonely it gets on deployment.
She doesn’t need it; she was lying.
Who’s she waiting to hear from, Marcy or Jason?
You could have rephrased that better. 😀
*woosh* over my head. Please explain
You would be waiting a very long time to hear from Marcie as she’s mute.
Excep she’s, um, waiting for a text.
Stupid colloquial English.
I imagine Marcie is better at texting than chatting.
I don’t know if Jason qualifies as a friend.
It’s most likely Marcie.
Oh I dunno, I had a couple of “friends” like Jason in college…
But as mentioned above, she’s grabbing a toothbrush, which means plans to stay over-night.
Well I hear bacteria really love protein
I’m under the impression that she told Jason sexy times were over and done with, and that didn’t seem to change when they ran into each other in the bar later. And would he even have her contact info? They were never dating or anything, just sexing it up after class.

Marcy I suspect.
I doubt she got Jason’s number, tho.

Sarah and Sal CAN’T be friends because if they were the combined power would create a black hole of sarcasm and vitriol.
Meh Mike’ll just cancel it out.
Mike saves the world, still hates it.
Isn’t that pretty much the story of Mike’s life?
That and your mom + a nickel = prostitute.
He’d be annoyed if that got left out. Then again, he’d probably be annoyed anyway.
Yep. Thats why he saved it!
Better the devil you know, then?
Lies. We need more conversations between these two.

So much beauty in one strip. I love these two awesome ladies. Please don’t hate each other!
I’m actually starting to dislike Sarah. Shes getting too Salty.
I kind of agree. She could at least be civil to the people she doesn’t like. And stop acting like she knows what’s best for Joyce.
Hopefully we’ll start to see some turn-around soon. Her misanthropy, even though it’s justified in some cases, limits her use as a character since having her interact with other characters will inevitably result in her getting annoyed with them.
Scowl-off!

All hail Sarah!!
It’s probably not a coincidence both their name share a syllab with Satan.

They might not be bffs, but they know each other plenty well. I wouldn’t say she barely knows her.
Sal appears to know Joyce about as well as she knows anybody else. Considering how much Joyce has inserted herself into Sal’s life, Sal probably knows more about her than she does of almost any other classmate.

I guess Sal works out at FITNESS Gym.

Wow, Sal sobered up fast. Almost as fast as she got drunk.
Well, she only had one drink in her, and that doesn’t take too long for the liver to metabolize.
Well she got really drunk late Friday night. And it’s now Saturday night sometime after 9:00 pm. It’s probably safe to assume that she’s sobered up from that by now.
Yeah, this isn’t even the same day. She may be a lightweight, but she’s had plenty of time to recover.
When was the last time they talked to each other?
Now that I know that you can use “+” with tag URLs, maybe November 21, 2011. After re-reading that strip, I don’t think it counts, so this would be the first real interaction?
One conversation every four years (or two to three weeks) seems about right, Don’t want to overdo it they’re not getting married over here.
That strip happened three weeks ago in comic time. (Pajama Jeans took place on the first Saturday in comic, and the current storyline is on the fourth Saturday)
Is Sal’s tattoo of one of the alien craft from It’s Walky? If so, does that mean she’s a secret Dexter and Monkey Master fan as well?
Walky said that she was his cartoon buddy before she was shipped off to catholic school.
I’m sorry, I don’t really understand the conflict here. Can someone explain? I’m missing some implicit thoughts here I think.
I think you hit the nail on the head there. Sarah is just a bit too insightful (but with a misanthropic POV) to bluff.
I think Sarah is either mad that Sal is participating in something selfish (In Sarah’s opinion not mine) rather than spending sometime doing something that would be so important to Joyce or just out of a general dislike for teenage dating/drama nonsense or possibly both.
I think Sarah assume Sal isn’t actually waiting for a text and just making stuff up.
Thanks
Interesting, same characters in the same setting but doing vastly different things in our two universes.
And neither one is using the toilet in either universe.
Here’s a question. Sal wears gloves literally all the time. How pale do you think her hands are?
I’m gonna say stereotypical guy living in his mom’s basement level of pale.
Here’s another one. She’s wears her gloves in the bathroom. Does she wash her gloves after using the toilet? I only ask because they really standout when she’s in the bathroom. Does she take them off, wash her hands, then put them back on.
Yeah I was wondering if they’re like super pruny.
I am wondering where Sal gets hers bras. I haven’t seen any type of bra that makes a woman’s boobs conical outside of 60’s media.
I think you’ll find Sal’s boobs are actually a single triangular prism with roughly equilateral bases
At the same place Kim Possible buys hers. http://img-cache.cdn.gaiaonline.com/76ac805f2c6610b92c951e3f19880583/http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb69/roseisdabomb/kim%20possible%20pics/Image2647.jpg

Ha! I never caught that! And actually, now that I think on it, Sal wasn’t wearing a bra when she jumped Jason the first time! Maybe she’s related to Kim.
Well, your gravatar has a triangular smile, and I sure haven’t seen one of those on a human. I just chalk it up to artistic license or whatever it is.
Sal’s shirt looks like something you’d see in the background of an anime
Oh right, texting. No, you definitely can’t do that in a loud crowded party. It’s not like it’s the exact kind of scenario texting was invented for, no ma’am!
A jocye party probably wouldn’t be loud or crowed anyways
They’ve got like fifty people in that dorm room now.
What do girls do in the bathroom together? DRAMA
#TeamSal
Sarah, I don’t mean to be rude, but when so many people consider interacting less with you it’s time to consider a change in attitude.
But Sarah likes not interacting with people.
Sarah likes to think she likes not interacting with people
That is what every extrovert says about introverts.
“Oh they so totally want to be in a room full of strangers, they are just being a sourpuss because it wasn’t their idea.”
But Sarah seems honestly unhappy about being left alone. She just wants to avoid “drama” (which is, as it so often is, a codeword for “other people’s emotional development”)
And drama often involves no emotional development at all, or horrible results for people in the immediate vicinity who had nothing to do with it..

She’s probably pretty good at Apples To Apples, too.
Except we’re talking about not wanting to interact with anybody. Plus, Sarah’s cynicism is partly to blame.
And expelled Sal is probably not going be welcomed back home – the Walkerton parents are fairly horrible toward her.
Oh, she’ll probably still be welcome, it’s probably exactly what they’re expecting from her. She’d just be living down to their expectations.
It is certainly possible they’d allow her to come home without making her feel welcome there!
Am I the only one who read Sarah’s expression not as “Yeah right – you’re avoiding the party”, but rather, “Yeah right – a “friend”? Come on, it’s a booty call.”
more like “…you have friends ?”
I think it’s a “I’m calling bullshit” look. Pretty sure Sal went in to brush her teeth, but is making it seem like she’s going somewhere as an excuse, since Sarah is here.
THEN AMBER COMES IN.
Three girls who don’t like each other very much, have tempers, and a tendency to use their fists, all meet in the same half-bath…
When a little is too much.

(Because you were starin at her boobs, admit it)
You know, outside of Peanuts I think it’s the first time I find a face that reminds of an emoticon.
>-(
Angry Sal is angry!
Is that an angry cyclops?
>:-(
But I prefer the shorter version.
It’s an angry unibrow!
Sarah’s jealous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s kind of adorable. >_>
Haven’t, but the Whiteboard Dingdong Bandit storyline is probably the best spot to start from.
I live, I die, I live again!
FITNESS ME!
I don’t remember if an explanation has been given for the spider tattoo before, but I’m going to imagine Sal as a ghost member of the Phantom Troupe (http://hunterxhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Phantom_Troupe) now.
