I like Joyce’s new shirt.
Only when it stops being funny.
Yay! Continuity!
Much like the 9th season of Scrubs.
Which doesn’t exist.
(it was actually supposed to be a spinoff show that didn’t get a proper release)
You’re going to get an angry Willis response for saying that.
DrewXDenise FOREVER
They exist in season 8, if I’m remembering my Scrubs correctly.
Personally I thought the ending was good enough- or at the very least, final enough- that anything afterwards would retroactively degrade it.
Drew was not in Season 8. He was introduced in Season 9.
I have shamed my Scrubs knowledge. I confused him with Derek.
Sigh…I suppose that means its time to watch Scrubs again.
In May, when I can get the dvds again.
It’s all on Netflix right now. I’ve been rewatching it.
I did not know you liked Scrubs S9. Or is it just that pairing? I’ll be honest, after the first episode, I couldn’t go any farther. It felt… Off… To me.
I totally forgot her name wasn’t Jo.
Speak of the David and he shall appear.
Wait…What?
That is some blasphemy right there. BLASPHEMY! The real kind, not like Joyce’s.
Do not blaspheme! Do not blaspheme!
Listen, sometimes you just need to pretend that it was a spin-off show. A one-season spin-off show that some viewers didn’t like because it was too much like the last show and some didn’t like because it wasn’t enough like the old show, but a spin-off show.
Like Stargate SG-1, the last couple of seasons. It’s clearly a new show. New team, new baddies, more swashbuckling space battles.
And you’ll find that if you pretend each episode of Heroes is a fresh slate with brand new continuity and brand new characters it makes WAY more sense.
I’d say that I remember it being a spinoff show that the producers didn’t think would fly on its own, so they kind of lashed it back on to the main continuity late in production, BUT I already made a fool of my Scrubs knowledge a little further up in the comments and I’m quite sleep deprived now.
Life immitates cartoons. Now only if someone could figure out the portable hole.
I’ve met a couple of portable holes before.
You mean like a fleshlight?
Do you mean like women who get around a lot?
that’s what she said
The SCA has portable holes. I damn near fell over laughing the first time I encountered them, but they are really useful for putting banner poles in.
These things.
I remember them well.
Look out, generic 90’s music is down that hall.
Dorothy is finally turned on by Danny but it’s too late.
Yep that break up was the best.
She’ll manage.
Am I missing something? All I thought was that she was happy for him because he finally grew a spine.
I’m always joking. That, too, was just me joking.
Wait, are you joking when you say you’re always joking? I’m so confused…
No, no, this is perfect! Keep relating your difficult experiences through the medium of cartoons!
Seperating fantasy and reality is a boring thing to do
Willis, the puppet episode was the WORST ONE.
Clearly you forgot about that CGI episode they tried to have in season 1 when they clearly didn’t have the budget for that.
Though I do kinda laugh with the cameo from the dudes from the Money for Nothing music video.
I thought that was a great callback. And if you look quickly, the band on the TV’s they’re watching looks familiar….
Agreed. That was the purest expression of how the new showrunners lacked both the talent and practice to make a ridiculous premise work.
Look, the issues with the puppet episode are…. nuanced. The absurd premise had huge potential and they almost pulled it off… close enough for us to see what gold it might have been. Some fans see that potential and revel in it, but for others, it just highlights how it fell short. The problem was that the writer’s guild strike meant they weren’t working with their top people. Really, the new management might have sucked, or not, but we’ll never know, because of that bad timing.
You know that the WGA doesn’t have jurisdiction over most animation work?
Shush. I’ve got my theory and I’m sticking to it.
She’s staring at her hand; ohhh boy that’s a callback.
Also, HELL YES, the puppet episode was good!
“Must not fap!”
Sorry.
yeah, I was so sorry to see Joss Whedon plagiarize most of it for “Angel.” I mean… really… come on, Joss…
Puppet episode? I didn’t know Dexter & Monkey Master was directed by Hideaki Anno…
(It’s a reference to Kare Kano)
Oddly I was thinking it was a reference to NGE’s Rei Ayanami before I read your last sentence.
And also Stargate.
Man, the puppet episodes are always the best episodes… 😀
Puppet show from the season the showrunner left… I assumed it was a reference to Community. *shrugs*
anyone else notice that they look like they’re about to kiss in panel 3
That’s just Willis teasing you, like the psychological puppet master he is.
Y’know, I read those two words as ‘muppet pastor’.
I think my brain is just goin’ on a joyride today.
Same thing.
Hiiiiyoooo
No, it just means that your soul cries out to join the Church of Banjo the Clown.
Was David Willis the original showrunner or just a creative consultant? Regardless of the answer I chose to believe the off-season was overseen by [insert cheap potshot at infamous webcartoonist here].
The director quit after a disagreement with the creator of the comic because the cartoon was focusing more on the comedy, rather than the romantic storyline.
I’m pretty sure that’s just a baseless rumor that originated with Dexter/MM shippers annoyed because Monkey Master/Sensitive Scanner got canonized.
David Willis prefered to stick to drawing comics. He had no intention in being an animation guy.
There goes my headcannon that DoA David Willis sank his animation money into a Taco Bell while DoA Maggie worked on the cartoon.
I think he’d still get money since they’re technically still his intelectual property.
Yes. DoA David Willis lives in a mansion with a solid gold lawn.
And is the sole shareholder of Yum! Brands.
And is apparently like Invader Zim creator Jhonen Vasquez (look him up).
I think the off-season was run by Japh Jaquas? It would explain how much the wacky hijinks were downplayed in favor of romantic frustration.
(I love QC, but couldn’t miss the opportunity.)
That evening shall henceforth be referred to as Hamburger Time.
Unrelated to today’s strip, just saw your 75K stretch goal. It got me off my ass and giving you my money. I may need to give more money in the future to ensure it happens.
Between the glassing and the baseball bat, Ryan was looking a bit like raw hamburger there towards the end, wasn’t he?
I was making a Metalocalypse reference, but that is indeed also an accurate statement. =)
My mom used to say the same thing to me, except, “STOP RELATING YOUR LIFE THROUGH WEB COMICS!”
Angel reference in the alt text?
I loved that episode! Puppet David Boreanaz was hilarious.
It was a Community reference.
And a Stargate reference.
Stargate had a puppet episode?
Not an entire episode, but the 200th episode had a puppet scene.
I liked that whole season!
She’s looking at her hand worriedly. I sense internal flashbacks coming on
Just so long as there aren’t 3 review episodes.
(seriously folks, go watch Kare Kano).
As a Gargoyles fan, I have no ability to relate to this sort of thing whatsoever.
Gargoyles rocks!
Sorry, my sarcasm detector is broken. Are you being sarcastic or not? Because, you know, Goliath Chronicles…
What about the Goliath Chronicles?
…that was the intended joke, yes.
But sometimes you learn important things from certain shows, gurren lagann once taught me to never quite in the face a challenge and there ain’t nothing out there that’s impossible as long as I REALLY put my mind to it. Will power.
Unfortunately, spiral power is not a real thing.
because if it were the entire universe would’ve been already extinct.
Not with that attitude it isn’t.
Believe in it, believe in the me that Believes in you
Aaaasnd happy with dorothy again.
“From the creators of Community, seasons one to three, comes… Community: Season Five.”
+1 for llama sheen. (Fuu~ Fuu~)
Ah yeah, the gas leak year.
Sure the last season was bad but was it as bad as that one season at the height of it’s popularity where every third episode was an attempt to spin off another show? That got old real quick and only like two of them had even the slightest potential.
Yeah, especially when they tried to make a spin-off with the new Jet Zebra. Seriously, that guy sucks. The old Jet Zebra was way better.
So Dexter and Monkey Master is Community, huh?
Dexter and Monkey Master is EVERYTHING.
Did you not watch the recent D&MM episode, where Dexter thinks he’s a G.I. Joe?
But everything in life can be related to the show!! EVERYTHINGGGG!!!!
What’s wrong with relating tough life stuff to cartoons and movies? Its what I do.
Yeah, I mean I do it too. That’s is one of the few things that keeps me sane.
Same here! 😀
Okay, guys I too relate to life through cartoons/comics/movies/etc …
So don’t take it personally; but I’m pretty sure you lost any claim to sanity the second time you posted on a webcomic’s forum. (The first time was in response to a really funny strip so you got a free pass that turned into gateway drug)
You *are* aware of Dorothy’s warped perceptions regarding childish habits, right?
Not that I’m saying doing this is childish, just that Dorothy thinks it is.
I think a good KickStarter move would be to offer at least concept art and small scenes (in comic, not animation) of the Dexter & Monkey Master series… I know talking is easy.
Willis doesn’t want to do animation.
Sorry for my reading confusion.
An alien and robot gorilla that tried to kill you all in an alternate time line.
Well, not her specifically. It wasn’t as personal.
Darn it Joyce..do you have to remind us of Season 8? The scars run deep with season 8.
WE DO NOT SPEAK OF SEASON EIGHT.
Blame Joyce. She brought it up.
Joyce needs a therapist. That stuff just eats at you for life if you don’t take care of it.
I thought the rapist was Joyce’s problem…
(I’m sorry.)
I did really like the puppet episode, that was a good one.
Yeah, that season was terrible, what with Dexter becoming a lumberjack and Monkey Master going to Argentina.
…Dammit Joyce.
Panel 1’s my new favorite Dorothy quote.
It is awesome, but I still like “you jag!”.
Good for Dorothy, I like her better again.
No. Do it more. Cartoons are meant to teach and entertain. Some cartoons can be used to relate incredibly adult themes to children, and help them to understand.
Like sometimes adults are wrong. Sometimes you are wrong. Sometimes being wrong has consequences. Sometimes you weren’t wrong, but sometimes other people are just spiteful jerks. And sometimes pointing a laser at the moon isn’t going to get you that new blu-sun player, and sometimes calling the president over and over to reinforce the threat isn’t that smart when he probably has caller ID. And sometimes parents mess up.
Sometimes they give you more than you can handle. Like a giant robot that’s meant to block a laser pointed at the moon by an overzealous and cheapskate alien who reverse engineered his giant monkey robot so that he could be a laser.
Cartoons are awesome.
My favorite was EEnE bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbklllllllllllleeeee yeah.
Did Dorothy just say that one shouldn’t filter reality through awesome fictional pieces ?
Downgraded to least favorite character forever !
gah, why am I stuck in a universe where Dexter & Monkey Master isn’t a real show 🙁
Your universe needs a D&MM Kickstarter.
Alien robot gorilla…
Hey I did not know you watched Transformers! *shot*
All in favor of Willis producing Joyce’s shirt in real life, say “Aye!”
Aye x ∞!!!
I’m glad Dorothy left Danny alone. I thought for a moment she was going to keep pressing the issue.
She will back off for now, but will catch him later when his guard is down. You know, just general conversation and then slip in a questions like “so what do you hear from your girlfriend?”.
-“BB”-
I am lost – what night is Joyce referring to???
The night she went to a party and got drugged.
Psst. “The night no one remembers.”
I am actually disturbed by how quickly people forget MAJOR events that happened just a few weeks/years ago in a piece of fiction.
Wait, hold on, now I’m disturbed that I do remember.
“We have got to stop relating tough life stuff through a cartoon about an alien and a robot gorilla.”
Why?
Poor Joyce
Really wish her introduction to the world of creepy ass douches had been a lighter one, like maybe just being hit on by someone who doesn’t know the difference between playful and disgusting, instead of being drugged and assaulted 🙁
True, but it did give us a chance to see Sarah being “big sister”.
I don’t understand. Does getting to see Sarah’s more caring side make it a good thing Joyce was drugged and assaulted? Or were you trying to describe it more like “I agree and that totally sucks but at least this one small good thing came of it,” because that would make more sense to me
DAMN! Messed up the link — try this.
Oh Joyce, you can’t deal with the emotions surrounding that night if you keep pretending it didn’t happen.
Joyce doesn’t generally deal with things that challenge her. That’s probably her central character flaw.
That’s not a Puppet Episode, THIS is a Puppet Episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsc_w8lB-rE
There are not enough Community jokes. This includes there not being enough episodes of Community.
Geez Joyce became a seasoned fan fast. What is it now? Six days since her first episode and she’s already aware of things like when the showrunner changed over.
I like how Dorothy is staring at the audience as she talks in the last panel.
