I’m 99% sure its just meant to be a framing choice for the sake of presentation. As you said, Joe is by far the tallest of the characters there. If you want to have all the characters seeing and reacting to the action going on, you need to have them in front of Joe or peeking around him.
And three people hiding behind Joe and peeking their head out, while funny, would probably detract a bit from the seriousness of the situation.
All three of them are willing to fight (well, maybe not Joyce), should he restrain them? They’re not children, if they want to fight and he has no moral issues with their target or violence in general, then if he wants to treat them as adults he should let them fight.
I mean, him knocking Dina’s food to the floor was douchey but not quite dangerous yes. He was being a douche and all this nonsense felt more confusing than threatening, especially after Walky got involved so they just kinda stood there wondering what to do. I doubt Joe would sit ildly if he tried to swing at one of them.

I really have missed the Amazi-Ass-Kickings of old. I absolutely get why they’ve been gone since the timeskip, but as someone who started reading post-timeskip and only ever experienced previous DoA (and, for that matter, Walkyverse) fight scenes in binge form, it’s super exciting to finally see a new one in real time.
In my senior year of high school I took a creative writing class taught by the best teacher at my school. We had an assignment where we needed to pull 10 lines/quotes/what-have-you that we found profound from TV, movies, songs, anything. When I read “I made me,” my very first thought was of that assignment. It’s my favorite line in this entire comic.

More recently we’ve seen her in a somewhat similar outfit and a mask but it wasn’t her costume as it was lacking the A logo and she was just hanging out semi-retired.
The costume I linked to is a one piece yellow jump suit. As you can see here she’s now wearing something like a yellow tunic with a larger A on the chest than her previous costume had and blue leggings.
The way the tunic flairs out I would speculate the costume might actually be unfinished. As it is now someone could grab the bottom of her tunic to yank her off balance or possibly tug on it hard enough to pull it over her face and blind her. It would be safer to join the tunic to the leggings and have a zipper or something up the back for her to use to put the costume on.
I will admit, I was expecting a significantly harder to stomach comic today from that title. Especially since I’ve been half worried/half excited about the potential for jocyelyne to get involved in this conversation (either from him targeting her, or her speaking up)
OK, after 14 “non-DOA” years of this trope, I’ve come to a conclusion…and I know I’m late to the party on this one, but here I go…Indiana University at Bloomington is either the MOST DANGEROUS CAMPUS in the USA -OR- has the feeblest security campus police force in the USA…or both…that is if you squint your eyes and believe within the confines of this web comic….just sayin’…
A huge portion of security on campuses relies on the fact that 99% of the time, nothing violent is going on. No criminal activity anywhere. Sadly, security can’t be everywhere at all times, so that 1% exception is likely to start and finish before they even hear of it, much less get there.
It’s campus with some 35k+ students, along with however many staff, located in the middle of a city.
The costumed stuff is obviously over the top, but a bunch of fights, attempted rapes and even a couple of murders isn’t really that out of line.
That one group of friends is at the epicenter of all of it is weird, but that’s really all.
Campus security exists to protect the reputation of the university. Sometimes that’s keeping rich students from being arrested by townie cops for drunk and disorderly or worse. Sometimes that’s mass arresting protestors. If the university has a medical school/hospital, sometimes they also assault and detain the “wrong kind” of patient, when they can’t find their car.
THREE times tonight I have been writing out a long annoying comment when suddenly a full screen popup ad has popped up over my screen, preventing me from doing anything except giving up and reloading the page, trashing my entire comment

He believes sexism is right, though. Sure he can see he behaves like a villain – but he believes the ends justify the means. He’s pretty much saying out loud in the strip that the only way to get people to listen to the truth is violence, and that violence is therefore justified.

Nobody is evil in his own eyes. If one sets aside the notion of an absolute moral authority then “good” and “evil” are labels given by consensus — and consensus depends on whom you are polling.
There are more options than “absolute moral authority” and “us v them”. It’s fairly easy to conclude that someone who, for example, causes suffering for thousands merely for the sake of adding a little money to their bank account — and money they’ll never need, at that — can be considered to be evil, at least in regard to those actions.
As an aside: this doesn’t contradict my above comment. I may not be able to empathize with their suffering, but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
This comic is and has always been wall-to-wall depictions of people fundamentally believing that they’re doing the right thing by punishing people who violate the norms as they understand them. Would have been kind of interesting to see what would have happened if AG hadn’t swooped in that dramatically appropriate moment. Would Joe have effortlessly grabbed him, like some think he could? Would Raptor Dina and Rage Joyce shredded him?

Joyce did punch out Ross once, but he’d just staggered out of a car wreck.
Dina got handled pretty easily by Ross in the woods, though she got in some hits, iirc.

I’m 99% sure its just meant to be a framing choice for the sake of presentation. As you said, Joe is by far the tallest of the characters there. If you want to have all the characters seeing and reacting to the action going on, you need to have them in front of Joe or peeking around him.
And three people hiding behind Joe and peeking their head out, while funny, would probably detract a bit from the seriousness of the situation.
All three of them are willing to fight (well, maybe not Joyce), should he restrain them? They’re not children, if they want to fight and he has no moral issues with their target or violence in general, then if he wants to treat them as adults he should let them fight.

In my senior year of high school I took a creative writing class taught by the best teacher at my school. We had an assignment where we needed to pull 10 lines/quotes/what-have-you that we found profound from TV, movies, songs, anything. When I read “I made me,” my very first thought was of that assignment. It’s my favorite line in this entire comic.
This strip https://www.dumbingofage.com/2021/comic/book-12/01-sister-christian/pals/ seems like the most recent one we have with her actually in costume. More recently we’ve seen her in a somewhat similar outfit and a mask but it wasn’t her costume as it was lacking the A logo and she was just hanging out semi-retired.
The costume I linked to is a one piece yellow jump suit. As you can see here she’s now wearing something like a yellow tunic with a larger A on the chest than her previous costume had and blue leggings.
The way the tunic flairs out I would speculate the costume might actually be unfinished. As it is now someone could grab the bottom of her tunic to yank her off balance or possibly tug on it hard enough to pull it over her face and blind her. It would be safer to join the tunic to the leggings and have a zipper or something up the back for her to use to put the costume on.
It kind of reminds me of the Stephanie Brown version of the Robin costume.

OK, after 14 “non-DOA” years of this trope, I’ve come to a conclusion…and I know I’m late to the party on this one, but here I go…Indiana University at Bloomington is either the MOST DANGEROUS CAMPUS in the USA -OR- has the feeblest security campus police force in the USA…or both…that is if you squint your eyes and believe within the confines of this web comic….just sayin’…
A huge portion of security on campuses relies on the fact that 99% of the time, nothing violent is going on. No criminal activity anywhere. Sadly, security can’t be everywhere at all times, so that 1% exception is likely to start and finish before they even hear of it, much less get there.
Also everywhere else.
It’s campus with some 35k+ students, along with however many staff, located in the middle of a city.
The costumed stuff is obviously over the top, but a bunch of fights, attempted rapes and even a couple of murders isn’t really that out of line.
That one group of friends is at the epicenter of all of it is weird, but that’s really all.
Campus security exists to protect the reputation of the university. Sometimes that’s keeping rich students from being arrested by townie cops for drunk and disorderly or worse. Sometimes that’s mass arresting protestors. If the university has a medical school/hospital, sometimes they also assault and detain the “wrong kind” of patient, when they can’t find their car.
