@sirk: well even if ethan doesn’t rly care if he lives or dies i imagine he wouldnt’ necessarily wanna traumatize asher if they do get in a wreck or so versus dying in front of someone he dislikes outta spite lol (although other than mike i don’t think we’d get any more important deaths or so lol)
maybe amazigirl would disapprove of asher but amber basically told booster to push them together more so not sure what would rly happen since not like ashwer’s doing anything to where amazigirl would have to ‘step in’ or so
lol idk if amazigirl is currently in control tho i think the height would bother me to get that close over the roof, id worry about slipping off, tho i guess most ppl wouldn’t rly be on a rooftop like that and she prolly parkoured up there versus going up from within the buildings stairs
Imagine leaving this comment on any other superhero comic. I could never do this, that giant monster looks way stronger than me. Plus i cant jump that high
Bruno has mentioned several times that they’re (he’re?) afraid of wide buildings. This was brought up back in April, again in July, and late last month.
it’s just the pillar looking things, so maybe a modern art statue. I thought it was showing some kind of off-kilter sensation Asher was having, but he saw the AG suit earlier this morning, seeing her isn’t completely out of the blue.
I get the vibe that Willis was not feeling great by some metric when this was drawn. (I say this out of artist’s sympathy, not criticism.) The panel pacing’s fucking great but some of the details seem very “please god just let me be done so I can sleep”.
I think those two have enough plot armor to survive an accident (though perhaps not without injury). However, those nondistinct shadow people in the background better hope they don’t get run over.
I’m a big fan of Krispy Kreme plain glazed, when the neon sign says, “Hot Donuts Now”!
…Although, homemade donuts that you make by dropping dough rings in a vat of boiling oil is EVEN BETTER. I can remember making them one winter in an old Pennsylvania farmhouse. I assume they must have been hand-molded rolled dough rings, but somehow in my childhood memory I remember them as having been made simply by dripping and pouring batter into the oil, in a ring shape, which solidified instantly as the oil bubbled and sizzled and snapped and popped all around it.
Krispy Kreme glazed donut will always be a favorite,
I once walked three hours in the cold of the morning just to get to the nearest Krispy Kreme to be the very first customer in line for National Donut Day
> in my childhood memory I remember them as having been made simply by dripping and pouring batter into the oil, in a ring shape, which solidified instantly as the oil bubbled and sizzled and snapped and popped all around it
Oh, yes! I must have gotten those two memories mixed up. The donuts were made by dropping hand-rolled dough rings into the oil, and the memory of dripping batter must have been from making funnel cake another time. Thank you for helping me sort those memories out!
…Now where do the memories of making crispy rice noodles like that come from?
Hmmm🧐🤔 So many deep-frying recipes to remember!
That is like asking me who my favorite child is. If I had children … and was a very hungry mother gribble.
I love the blueberry cake ones and the crullers the best I think. However, while I don’t really like filled donuts, you will notice that the rest look like rings. This is because anytime somebody opens of box of them I have the same reaction to them that Bilbo does to the One in Rivendell.
I’d rather eat actual dog nuts than cake doughnuts. Blegh.
Krispy Kreme Boston creme or raspberry filled are my favorites, but I’m all about trying new flavors. Just no fucking cake. They’re like a moisture vacuum for your mouth, the flavor is awful and the texture is worse.
Chocolate glazed stick (a chocolate cake donut in the shape of a log). I don’t know why I like them better than the circular ones. I think maybe because they get better coverage with the glaze in log shape, so they don’t dry out as easily. I could only really ever find them at Dunkin’ Donuts, and don’t live in that area anymore. Appears to be that they might not offer them anymore either, which is too bad. Most of the donuts in the grocery stores and bakeries in my current area are yeast donuts (like Crispy Creme), apple fritter like ones, or plain old fashioned ones. They don’t tend to have chocolate cake too often, unfortunately.
While growing up, my local grocery store (a Hannaford), used to do really good glazed chocolate donut holes. They would perfectly coat the donut hole fully with glaze, so it wouldn’t dry out for days. Later on they got really lazy with the glazing, and the donut holes would have a lot of spots without glaze (sometimes up to half or more of the donut hole). It seemed like those donut holes would dry out in hours. They never did get better after that. Hannaford also used to have some really good store brand plain old fashioned donuts in a box over by the bread (rather than the bakery). Not sure if they are still selling them or how good they are anymore, since I have heard that the owners have changed, but you might try them out if you are in an area that has that grocery store.
I also have thoughts about places that don’t put either glaze or powdered sugar on their cake donuts when the location is in an arid environment. They dry out way too fast and turn hard. Some of the grocery stores around here just put the sprinkles on a donut hole without and glaze, and the donut hole just turns hard in less than a day and the sprinkles don’t stick to it. It isn’t as much of a problem in humid environments, as it is hard for anything to dry out if the dewpoint is above 60F (15.6C). In a desert environment, you want both the glaze (so it doesn’t dry out) and a fridge (so it doesn’t melt), or you just go and buy them as soon as they make them and eat it asap.
Ooh! I forgot about the powdered, icing-filled ones. They’re practically unobtainium these days, but back when I was a kid our local Dunkin still made theirs in-house. One of those was a birthday tradition until they stopped carrying them.
More importantly, what is your LEAST favorite type of donut? I don’t like powdered sugar donuts, the powdered sugar goes EVERYWHERE when you bite it, it even gets INHALED, which is very unpleasant.
There’s a bakery in Boston called “Bova’s” (bova deez nuts yes) that makes the best Boston Cream Donut I’ve ever had. It’s a ring donut with a cakey consistency, with a chocolate icing on top, and then the donut is cut in half with a ton of cream sandwiched between the two pieces for the filling. It’s so good.
And specifically in the context of “Amber is Ethan’s oldest, best, and maybe last remaining friend.” A lot harder to make moves against Amazi-Girl (assuming that’s even what he wants at this point) when you know how it’ll affect your current partner.
We should all chip in and get them a pair of tee shirts that say “Amber is not Amazi-Girl”. One red-on-white, one white-on-red. Then let everyone guess who chose which, forever.
god i’m literally so in love with amazi-girl casual fronting hangout vibes. it’s like. as a plural person you will sometimes have an absurd cartoon character hanging out in your body and y’know what. that’s real. amazi-girl is a literal actual superhero but today she’s vibing
Hey, if Tony Stark can lounge on a building’s roof and chow down on donuts, Amazi-Girl can do it, too. (the town probably doesn’t have a giant donut to sit inside, so she’s gotta make do with just the roof)
Took me a minute to see the unhappiness on Asher’s face in panel 4. I’m hoping he’s about to try to right a past wrong. (Will he succeed or only make it worse? This is Dumbing of Age, after all . . . )
Why? She finds Amazi-Girl hot, sure, but does she have a sitting-on-a-roof-eating-donuts fetish I don’t know about? Everything else about this scene involves guys.
This storyline made me think “man maybe he feels bad for trying to help a guy kill his own kid” and not that he has to try and bump her off or something even though she has no idea he had any part in this
Pretty sure Blaine lied and said no one would get hurt. So. Yeah. I can see why Asher’d feel bad about how bad things actually went and how crazy dangerous it got.
So, Asher and Ethan are out on a bike ride. Asher happens to spot Amazi-Girl, whose costume he already saw in her bedroom, eating on a rooftop. His face is a little hard to read, but he may be simply putting two and two together. In the last panel, he seems to be speeding up slightly, and definitely seems to recognize her.
The title (and hovertext) are a reference to a common road trip game called I Spy, in which participants look at something and give a hint using the phrase “I spy, with my little eye*, something [simple descriptor of the object]”, which the other participants will then look for and guess what it could be. Asher has spied something that begins with A, by the conventions of the game.
*There are some regional variations on the phrase, but that’s what we say in Little Egypt.
It’s basically setting up “this season’s BBEG” storyline where Asher’s mob family members (and maybe Asher too) are gonna come back to the school for problems or maybe a catharsis storyline to help Amber heal from her major psychological issues.
Don’t trust Asher. Yup.
i mean backstory aside i wouldn’t trust someone that wouldn’t have a helmet for himself/his partner lol
he does have a helmet though, we’ve seen jennifer wear it before. so it’s possibly more an ethan thing than an asher thing in this instance.
Lol. Riding at high speeds with no helmet just to feel something. Doomed yaoi is so extra.
As long as it doesn’t turn into an achillian suicide pact we’re ok with doomed yaoi.
Helmets have been omitted for photographic reasons. Always wear your helmet. ATGATT.
safety aside, it’s freaking negative temps in winter
I mean, not that the dude didn’t have it coming, but it really looks like Asher put a hit on Amber’s dad, and not for particularly noble reasons.
I assume you mean to cover his own involvement in the whole Towards Kidnapping tiing
Toedads not towards and thing not tiing
thanks, I thought I was having a stroke for a moment there. ~<3
Gonna have some drama~
A big drama, actually.
Yes!!!
maybe amazigirl would disapprove of asher but amber basically told booster to push them together more so not sure what would rly happen since not like ashwer’s doing anything to where amazigirl would have to ‘step in’ or so
**trombone noises to emulate a motorcycle**
I mean is it even a secret anymore
Not from Asher.
lol idk if amazigirl is currently in control tho i think the height would bother me to get that close over the roof, id worry about slipping off, tho i guess most ppl wouldn’t rly be on a rooftop like that and she prolly parkoured up there versus going up from within the buildings stairs
The tags list Amazi-girl, so yeah she’s still in control
Imagine leaving this comment on any other superhero comic. I could never do this, that giant monster looks way stronger than me. Plus i cant jump that high
Giant monster?
Bruno has mentioned several times that they’re (he’re?) afraid of wide buildings. This was brought up back in April, again in July, and late last month.
Da heck is Bruno?
Oh, I see. The poster above. Duh.
It’s only two stories. She can just Superhero Landing it.
That’s closer to one storey. I could stick that.
i don’t understand what the background of the last panel is doing, is it like… he’s driving wobbly now?
That’s a sculpture.
it’s just the pillar looking things, so maybe a modern art statue.
May everyone get a great night’s sleep tonight.
Willis Probably doesn’t do that his buffer is months long, so its probably more of a “eh good enough” rather than “I’m sick and still drawing comics.”
My interest is being peaked…but I’m worried about that, given that old saying about how Curiosity Killin the cat.
Yeah, Joe Curiosity certainly had a thing about cats.
Is spelling that word as peaked normal in the USA? I know it as piqued.
Nah, OP has just mixed up homophones
. . . referring to Asher peeking at A.G. sitting on what he thought was the peak of the roof
I think it’s part of the plot thread that started earlier in the morning, when Asher caught a glimpse of the Amazi-suit in Amber’s closet.
https://www.dumbingofage.com/hotdudes/
Whenever Asher implodes, I hope he doesn’t take Ethan with him.
Whatever’s going on in that head of his, implosion is not what I’m expecting. He can jump any of several ways.
Badguy’s gonna badguy.
Based off the fact that they’re not wearing helmets and Asher’s distracted, I’m a bit concerned.
I think those two have enough plot armor to survive an accident (though perhaps not without injury). However, those nondistinct shadow people in the background better hope they don’t get run over.
Cape or no cape, nothing is gonna keep Amazi-Girl away from the rooftop.
Wonder what kind of donut she’s eating.
What’s your favorite kind of donut?
(Anyone and everyone, feel free to join in with answers of your own!)
My fave: probably chocolate old-fashioned.
Amazi-donut: cough medicine, or if that’s illegal at this point in time, crunchberry.
Why cough medicine?
Some people like cough medicine, particularly the cherry flavored kind. Though not necessarily because of the taste.
My philosophy is why have one favorite flavor of doughnut when you can have them all.
*offered donut from tray, snatches entire tray, runs off*
Lemon curd filled glazed
another for chocolate old-fashioned.
Like the beverage?
I’m a big fan of Krispy Kreme plain glazed, when the neon sign says, “Hot Donuts Now”!

What you are describing is called funnel cake
Oh, yes! I must have gotten those two memories mixed up. The donuts were made by dropping hand-rolled dough rings into the oil, and the memory of dripping batter must have been from making funnel cake another time. Thank you for helping me sort those memories out!

Hmmm🧐🤔 So many deep-frying recipes to remember!
I like those sorta cakey blueberry ones with the thin glaze. Can’t eat more than one, but they’re great with some coffee.
But have you ever had a Golden Cristal Ube?
Never heard of it.
What is your favorite donut.
My favorite is either a good maple bar or what my dad calls a Bismark but nearly everyone else in the world calls a Boston cream.
Mmm, the local supermarket makes Bismarks with raspberry filling. Nearly irresistable.
Oh my god those sound delicious. Chocolate + raspberry is almost unbeatable.
Buttermilk Cruller if a donut, apple fritter if it’s just something you get from a donut shoppe.
Cake doughnuts are the best. Heh. I used to have buddy who pronounced “dog nuts.”
Mister Donut’s (the now-Japanese chain) pon de ring doughnuts.

Ooh! I forgot about the powdered, icing-filled ones. They’re practically unobtainium these days, but back when I was a kid our local Dunkin still made theirs in-house. One of those was a birthday tradition until they stopped carrying them.
Dunkin’ donuts were better when Fred made them.

It’s always time to make the doughnuts! 😀
Michael Vale was a terrific character actor in the 70s; prior to DD, he was Sam Breakstone, hawking cottage cheese on TV.
What building is Amber sitting on?
Best donuts anywhere: Emily’s Donuts in Williamsburg Va.
Chocolate cake. All chocolate-y goodness, dense, slightly crunchy on the outer glaze part. Goes great with hot coffee or tea in the morning.
Glazed sour cream cake.
My favorite? Easy: Plain Cream-filled. No topping. Only kind I really bother with.
Honorable mention goes to the same thing, but made with potato. Man, I miss Spudnuts.
More importantly, what is your LEAST favorite type of donut? I don’t like powdered sugar donuts, the powdered sugar goes EVERYWHERE when you bite it, it even gets INHALED, which is very unpleasant.

Wow, so many donut delicacies!
Apple fritter
Depends on whether she got it from BrewLabs, Lucky Pierre or Panda.
Is that what she’s doing? I couldn’t tell.
Has Willis ever even ridden a motorcycle? Riding with no face shield when it’s that cold would freeze your face in about 5 minutes.
The author having ridden a motorcycle has no inherent bearing on how the reckless teenagers in the story ride one.
And a wind frozen face lets you know you are alive.
Not like crossing paths with a June bug at speed will!
Luckily for them it’s still the middle of winter.
It’s like how actors don’t wear helmets in movies. Or Sunny in OOTS having a lens for her central eye. You wanna see their faces.
He’s definitely pondering what this knowledge means for him.
And specifically in the context of “Amber is Ethan’s oldest, best, and maybe last remaining friend.” A lot harder to make moves against Amazi-Girl (assuming that’s even what he wants at this point) when you know how it’ll affect your current partner.
What does Asher have against Amazi-Girl?
I think it’s more what Asher is worried Amazigirl has against him.
I don’t think she even knows who he is, besides “that hot Asian guy”.
Depends on how much background info she has from Amber and Walky’s encounter with him.
right but, does Asher know that?
Not likely to happen but Asher not looking forward while driving worries me.
My mind cycled through “thumbs up, donut, the bird, donut, why is the donut so thin? Maybe the bird.”
I’m just glad Amazi-girl is having a nice day
still waiting on that epic Asher betrayal moment
I think we need to decompress our current list first.
He might come after Raidah. Possibly even after Cliff.
In Indiana it is legal for those over 18 to ride a motorcycle without a helmet. They should still be wearing helmets.
(W)ispy hair in the wind.
Wait remind me, has Asher interacted with Amazi-girl?
*checks tags*
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2024/comic/book-15/01-love-dares-you-to-change/hotdudes/
…so that’s what he’s thinking about, I guess
Possibly knows her by reputation in conjunction with Blaine and Toe-dad?
Did Walky not punch Asher in Amber’s presence?
I did it again. Amber is not Amazi-girl.
Right? Amber could have this too if she boosts her self-confidence and overcomes her chihuahua-level anxiety a little.
Hey, if Tony Stark can lounge on a building’s roof and chow down on donuts, Amazi-Girl can do it, too. (the town probably doesn’t have a giant donut to sit inside, so she’s gotta make do with just the roof)
Helmets. Helmets! You moody assholes are just being lazy on this one. Sorry, just, we’ve had enough untimely and timely deaths.

Oh! So that’s what ATGATT means! TIL!
Took me a minute to see the unhappiness on Asher’s face in panel 4. I’m hoping he’s about to try to right a past wrong. (Will he succeed or only make it worse? This is Dumbing of Age, after all . . . )
Somewhere, Daisy is about to have the biggest lady-boner ever.
Why? She finds Amazi-Girl hot, sure, but does she have a sitting-on-a-roof-eating-donuts fetish I don’t know about? Everything else about this scene involves guys.
Because Amazi-Girl has been MIA for months, and Daisy would love to put her back on the front page of the newspaper.
These boys look unbelievably French right now.
Wear helmet!
Prediction: storyline climaxes with an AG-Asher face-off where he asserts he’s changed and she has to confront the Amber/AG split
eyes on the road, pal.
I can’t make out what Amber is doing. Sitting on the roof edge, sure. But is she flipping Asher off? Is she eating something?
She’s got a box of donuts.
I can see it now. She’s doing the Tony Stark thing. 🙂
Based on the tags, it’s Amazi-Girl who’s eating a box of donuts (as was foreshadowed). Amber is sitting at the back of her mind.
“as was foreshadowed” was supposed to link here:
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2024/comic/book-15/01-love-dares-you-to-change/broccoli-2/
She’s watching them to collect fanfic material.
Not even eye protection? C’mon, you two!
man is NOT obeying the superhero disguise rules, get with the program asher
Love the ambiguity. What is Asher thinking?
Have I messed up her life?
Is she a threat?
Do I have to have her killed too?
Why Ethan’s best friend?
Asher’s paranoia is getting serious. He’ll start seeing AmaziGirl and Amber everywhere.
This storyline made me think “man maybe he feels bad for trying to help a guy kill his own kid” and not that he has to try and bump her off or something even though she has no idea he had any part in this
oh wow
yeah
yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Pretty sure Blaine lied and said no one would get hurt. So. Yeah. I can see why Asher’d feel bad about how bad things actually went and how crazy dangerous it got.
Huh, I don’t get any of this strip, or the mouse-over either. 🙁
So, Asher and Ethan are out on a bike ride. Asher happens to spot Amazi-Girl, whose costume he already saw in her bedroom, eating on a rooftop. Why is it that for a moment I saw, in panels 2 and 4, a huge-headed Asher in red pullover.
