I recognise all those catchphrases and I was born three years after Laugh-In ended, in a country that, as far as I know, never showed it. And I have no idea how, except that I must have picked it up from the internet somewhere.
I watched the first run of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In on our Zenith B&W tv. If memory serves, they walked a fine line slipping things past the network censors – a prime time show was not allowed to say much about Vietnam.
I had literally never heard of Laugh-In before, and I still recognized the phrase just from general use in pop culture. I believe I saw it in an Archie comic, and was admittedly confused about the usage.
She may have (probably) has seen it a few times in the last 6 months, and asked Sarah or Dorothy why people were putting socks on their doors. Or she looked up the internet.
Capitalism aside, it’d be amusing if a sock company /did/ exclusively produce socks of that purpose with ‘fun’ patterns if not some kinda other sign like their signboards that’s a do not disturb with college students as their audience/customer base. Or like, a trojan pack came with a disposable sock for that purpose too for funsies XD
Well, she did befriend jennifer fairly early and joe’s put a sock on the door when danny and jen were in their room even tho he didn’t do anything so she probably has heard of it
or she’s read enough of ambers fanfics to know (tho, would a smut writer like amber rly bother with the ‘etiquette’ of stuff like that other than a one off comic relief joke versus just focusing on the dirty scenes lol)
If Amber’s any good at her craft she would. Anyone can write “and then they fuck” good smut is just as much about world building and details as any literature. I’m not gonna buy Bruce and Clark boning down in Amber’s DC comics college AU if the door to their shared half bath dorm is just wide open!
given how amazigirl is i can imagine she’s written stuff where there’s no metaphorical door to have a sock on to begin with/outdoors stuff but i guess it is al situational
i mean, pop culture, innuendo aside, do the dorm rooms not lock? other than being interrupted with a roommate who’d be the only one with a copy of the key, no one else would just come in unannounced, versus just avoiding knocking out of politeness/going later (tho they also had a half bath too right? they’d also have to have socks on those doors too lol)
I never lived in a dorm, but when I was in military barracks with semi-private rooms and shared baths, the doors into the bathroom had latches on both sides.
Doesn’t that make it easy to lock the other room out accidentally? Or for that matter to lock someone into the bathroom?
I’ve never grasped how those shared baths should work.
I never lived in dorms, but when I had friends that did, they didn’t lock automatically and pretty much no one bothered locking them. this all seemed (seems) wild to me because yeah there is security to keep anyone from wandering in off the street, but anyone who lived in the building could get in there and creep through your stuff or whatever
Wow, that is crazy to me. I lived in the dorms on what is rated as one of the safest campuses in the US, and still locked my door when I left. Just seems like such a simple and obvious safety precaution.
Sometimes, you decide socks are too visible and put a sticky note on the door instead and sometimes it falls off. Sometimes your roommate doesn’t see it and decides to come in. Sometimes they lead a conga line of 8 of you and your partner’s shared acquaintances/friends.
Basically, the sock is to protect your roommate and whatever massive party of people they’ve decided needs to be in your closet-sized room with them.
I would be surprised if these days roommates just send a discreet (or possibly not so discreet) text. I was in college just as smartphones were becoming a thing and I don’t think I heard of anyone actually using a sock, it was just a general college meme people would reference (or maybe jokingly putting one on someone’s door as a small prank).
it takes time and effort to lock/unlock. So if someone knocks, you can just say “come in”, or your roommate doesn’t need to take their keys to go to the bathroom sort of thing.
Locking is what we did when we were leaving for an extended period of time and didn’t want anyone to steal and hide the door.
tho wonder how she’d act if they rly /did/ hook up (guess we’ll have to wait for a slipshine lol)
or reverse uno(?) where ppl didn’t believe them. like “I totally got laid” “Joyce, joe kissing you and touching your boobs while ur bra is still on doesn’t count as sex”
I mean so far it is but i can imagine some others getting mad at her for using joyce’s neuroses as being seeing as ‘slutty’ or whatever (tho it would be a hilarious contrast if joyce was actually married and had no inhibitions about being ‘horny on main’/comfortable with it because she’s married nad oversharing lol)
Are you trying to say that a common phrase that casts a negative light on an ethnic group and their associated stereotypes might be considered insensitive and/or offensive to people in that ethnic group? It’s like you can’t say anything anymore!
(big fat /s on that second part, in case anyone here is stupid)
Very good, it is good to see that the boys are given a chance to grow without the need for the unjustified hatred that many in the comments have expressed that make them unfairly become villains.
I will take the risk, but I confess that it is difficult for me to take Joyce’s progress seriously (yes, I know that she went through a horrible torment that caused a turning point in her life), I felt that there was no sincerity in the differences with Becky and I only use that last resource to try to go deeper.
The only thing where I saw a convincing change was in stopping being a jerk to Dina.
Maybe I’m speaking too soon, but if things get out of control, the brunette (her hair color doesn’t look blonde to me) won’t want help and will let her pride create chaos.
I get that. Certainly there’s a lot more that could and should be continued to work on.
But also it’s important to remember that Joyce has only had a few short months to work on changing. Self-improvement can take a long time, even with maximum effort and good success. The most meaningful change to me in this time so far has been her desire to change. It’s been a touch over 13 years for us, but if one assumes we’re deep into February the timeline of the strip is under 6 months. (No idea if that assumption is right, but it still illustrates the scale well even if I’m off by weeks)
The time gap of the story and the readers makes it a very difficult challenge.
I’m not saying that the changes will come to everyone immediately, I just wanted to get it out of my system, because I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but here in the comments I noticed a peculiar fight that I call “Let’s support Joyce because she is the only one who deserves support and the rest deserve nothing”
And maybe you don’t agree with me, but notice that many (ironically) have put Joyce on a pedestal just because she eliminated God as a source of objective morality, and yes, okay, HER DECISION IS UNDERSTANDABLE, but the way How they have defended it and that many project themselves with her, it has made it difficult for me to consider its progress.
It has already been seen that now if they let Joyce grow up alone, fine, let her make her mistakes correctly.
Finally, Joyce should be grateful that Sarah told them to calm her hormones, because if it had been Dorothy, the problem would have occurred.
Didn’t see this until after midnight, but I think it’s worth a reply.
I do agree that her change so far has not been significant. Certainly she hasn’t broken free of really any of the harmful thought patterns she was taught.
And you’re right about the trend in the comments. I may have taken your comments slightly out of their intended context because I try to keep a firm wall between how most of the comments section feels about almost anything and how I feel about it, so I tend to skim or skip a whole lot of comments once they start making me roll my eyes.
I think part of the reason Joyce gets so much leeway is that she sometimes gets portrayed as a protagonist, and even more so she’s semi-autobiographical for Willis, so I think the comments section is pre-disposed to cut her extra slack. I’m sure I’m subject to some of that as well. I do try to give most characters leeway to fail without getting hateful. I fail outright with Jennifer, but that’s partly because the way she shows so much disdain for others really pushes my buttons, and that may just be a me problem.
Precisely, that is why I decided to wait for the tension in the comments to calm down a little and be able to express what I wanted to say. I admit that I felt terrified about how to be impeccable with my words, I felt like I was walking in a minefield. And well, the list of characters is enormous and everyone is free to choose their favorites and not favorites, I like Sal, Dorothy, Jacob and let’s say that Joe has generated a certain sympathy in me. Becky is a tightrope of sympathy and boredom, Mary and Raidah were designed to be hated by everyone, I think they are the ones that we all share a common hatred.
Malaya….. I think there is no need to comment.
Many say that Billie and Jennifer are different entities, I also think that way, although Billie had her details, there was a certain empathy, but as Dorothy said in previous strips “”we lost Billie”
Having followed this comic since roughly year three and knowing Joyce’s background, if I were to see a sock on her dorm room doorknob I’d assume that it was SARAH, not Joyce, in there gettin’ it on with someone. Joyce would be the one leaving the door wide open so that people could see that nuthin’ funky was going on.
Is there a resource that will tell us an exact list of which characters have said what swears? I know Joyce has said damn, hell, shit, ass, slut, and meaty cock, but what else do we know?
Damn right! 🎸 Sounds real nice, too. This time next year, I’m gonna be probably pretty decent with, do some cool video game covers, somethin’ like that.
Sarah on the last panel remind me someone. I dont know who, that nose has some character from Donald Duck comics or some paint Art or maybe I simply think about Duchess from Imaginary friends
i think she’s just more ashamed of her own libido. tho it would be an interesting arc if joyce was super horny and basically dating someone asexual but i imagine it’d be a repeat of becky and dina lol

Joe has explicitly and implicitly encouraged her to hate him, within the past two weeks, not just in September. Even after they realize he can’t be her hate sink anymore, for Joyce’s sake, she actually needs to see the new Joe, who he’s trying to become. Forgiveness is not obligatory, and I think Joe understands that, and will probably be accommodating as he figures out how to make amends, so that she can see the new information.
intrigued to see how he’s gonna manage this
there’s really no good way for someone to convince someone they’re not doing some pickup artist shit in the context of trying to do a relationship beyond it lasting forever
I think a lot of it will be on Joyce, fairly or not. She’s built this whole connection with him over months without him hitting on her. But she hasn’t let any of her other friends know about it, which means they’re caught in an emotional whiplash. Without knowing what’s been happening between them, it seems like this came out of nowhere, which fits very easily into Joe’s pickup artist shit
Wow, full 180 from being totally cool given the situation (the jab last panel wasn’t a jab so much as a statement of truth :/ and allowable, c’mon) to…I mean seriously Sarah, pretty much slut shaming.
Sarah’s Lifehacks for Rooming with Joyce, vol. 1
I feel at this point Sarah could probably write a set
She’s working on volume fourteen right now!
Remember, nobody wants to be a
SquidwardSarah! XD*plays “So Tired” from SpongeBob Production Music*
I would have chosen something from Donnie Osmond. We are talking about SOCKS, aren’t we?
I can only think of Pajama Sam when socks are the focus.
I haven’t worn socks in years XD
‘that’s what it is’
Speak for your self. Squidward is my spirit animal.

Verrry interestingk … but schtupid.
Is there an older group here than I imagine? Or is there a reason the youngsters know Laugh-In?
I recognise all those catchphrases and I was born three years after Laugh-In ended, in a country that, as far as I know, never showed it. And I have no idea how, except that I must have picked it up from the internet somewhere.
There were definitely reruns and marathons if it played into the 80s.
Coming this fall, “Joyce Brown, rated PG”.
But what rating is the Special Diector’s Cut with added scenes?
PG-13.
There are underwear scenes. And washing machines.
I’m old enough that I saw the entire first run of I Dream of Jeanie.
And that’s the truth. [raspberry]
I’m old enough to have seen the first run of Captain Kangaroo.
*drops many pingpong balls on EIC*
I watched the first run of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In on our Zenith B&W tv. If memory serves, they walked a fine line slipping things past the network censors – a prime time show was not allowed to say much about Vietnam.

i’m 52, mostly remember it from reruns in the 80’s
Same.
I recommended DOA to my grandchildren.
Dumbing of Age Book 14: I REMAIN SAFELY RATED-PG (I Say Damn Sometimes)
Vote for that!
I’m surprised Joyce knows what the sock on the door means.
She may have (probably) has seen it a few times in the last 6 months, and asked Sarah or Dorothy why people were putting socks on their doors. Or she looked up the internet.

I’m…surprised no-one has done that yet, actually.

That’s valid, not everyone is into exhibitionism.
Clark has a whole ass fortress of solitude, why would he just fuck out in the open? Were you raised in a barn?…
Well barn adjacent.
There’s always solitude in the ass fortress.
“Oh no, we can’t have sexy times, I’m out of clean socks!”
It means the doorknob is feet so everyone walking in the room is touching a door foot.

lol baby steps i guess but you’d think she’d not care if anyone knows other than maybe dorothy
Good job Joyce, this is very convincing and not at all suspicious!
nah, everyone in this hall knows that if joe was fuckin anyone the sock would be on the door immediately. he knows the importance of the sock
i mean, pop culture, innuendo aside, do the dorm rooms not lock? other than being interrupted with a roommate who’d be the only one with a copy of the key, no one else would just come in unannounced, versus just avoiding knocking out of politeness/going later (tho they also had a half bath too right? they’d also have to have socks on those doors too lol)

but socks would be a thing anyway so one’s roommate doesn’t come in
Wow, that is crazy to me. I lived in the dorms on what is rated as one of the safest campuses in the US, and still locked my door when I left. Just seems like such a simple and obvious safety precaution.

The sock is to stop your roommate from coming in. It’s just that everyone else can also see the sock and knows what it means.

No more effort to lock the door than to put a sock on it.
And the sock warns the roommate, who has a key and usually doesn’t bother to knock.
answer to “do the dorm rooms not lock?”
He doesn’t even put the sock there. It just appears by his will.
work smarter, not harder
Joyce loudly denying it will only make people suspect it more
it is very joyce like lol
tho wonder how she’d act if they rly /did/ hook up (guess we’ll have to wait for a slipshine lol)
or reverse uno(?) where ppl didn’t believe them. like “I totally got laid” “Joyce, joe kissing you and touching your boobs while ur bra is still on doesn’t count as sex”
See, now that’s the simple solution!
So there’s finally a matching pair of socks?
Sarah I don’t think this is going to have the effect you want it to
I mean so far it is but i can imagine some others getting mad at her for using joyce’s neuroses as being seeing as ‘slutty’ or whatever (tho it would be a hilarious contrast if joyce was actually married and had no inhibitions about being ‘horny on main’/comfortable with it because she’s married nad oversharing lol)
MArried Joyce just casually bringing up her sex life over lunch. With great detail.
What’s the Making out version of Cock Blocked. Lip Jipped?
kiss miss would sound cute and like a lip gloss brand or so lol
The second half of that is an ethnic slur, so I’m gonna suggest going with something else. How about…French benched?
Are you trying to say that a common phrase that casts a negative light on an ethnic group and their associated stereotypes might be considered insensitive and/or offensive to people in that ethnic group? It’s like you can’t say anything anymore!
(big fat /s on that second part, in case anyone here is stupid)
Ugh, FFFFFinally.
I mean, well-played, Sarah, I’ll give you that.
Also, Joyce is a goofball.
I wanted to see some making out, Sarah. So if Joe’s not gonna do it I’m gonna have to ask you to-
“It’s not too late.”
https://www.itswalky.com/comic/so-the-head-alien-is-gone/
God…I’m so tempted to draw Joe doing that with Sarah.
pshhhh You ain’t the only cowboy at this here dog and pony show

(but for real by all means yeah go for it also)
LOVE IT. Sarah’s expression and the drag marks are great. Also Joyce looks receptive.
Haha, thanks!

mmmmh…maybe?
I get that. Certainly there’s a lot more that could and should be continued to work on.

An impressive display of physical might. She should join tge roller derby team
this whole comic is just a propaganda outlet for Big Roller Derby, that was the true goal all along
Well that’s one way to get what you want!
Having followed this comic since roughly year three and knowing Joyce’s background, if I were to see a sock on her dorm room doorknob I’d assume that it was SARAH, not Joyce, in there gettin’ it on with someone. 🤘😎
all I know of is the f-bomb count. http://www.ci-n.com/~jcampbel/doafbombcount.php
See Sarah? There was no reason to be super manipulative or anything, just use that
Because this isn’t manipulative?
Technically, since it hadn’t occured to her it would work even as she said it, no. If she’d done it on purpose, it would have been.
and even if it were intended, it’s just minor needling, not orchestrating anything with third parties, so no “super manipulative”.
It’s manipulative but it’s not underhanded, because it didn’t involve any dishonesty or plots.
Sarah on the last panel remind me someone. I dont know who, that nose has some character from Donald Duck comics or some paint Art or maybe I simply think about Duchess from Imaginary friends
Joyce is ashamed of who she’s dating. They’re gonna last a week, maximum.
i think she’s just more ashamed of her own libido. tho it would be an interesting arc if joyce was super horny and basically dating someone asexual but i imagine it’d be a repeat of becky and dina lol
She’s embarrassed about people thinking she’s having sex. Joe has his own hangups to work on, and she has hers. If there is no mutual understanding of that, this relationship will not work.
Damnit, Joyce.
Damnit, Sarah. For using Joyce’s neuroses against her which she’s trying to overcome.
Socks to be Joe, who was involved in the first sock-titled strip.
Sock it to me?!
After almost 12 years, we finally found Joe’s other sock!
It sucks that she’s still self-conscious of how she’s perceived by others. Hopefully, this is a gag and nothing more. I need more JoeJoy!
Remember what she said a few strips ago about change. She’s got stuff to work through and some of her base impulses might initially be in control before she has a chance to think it through.
Revolutions take time. It’s not like throwing a switch. To disassemble and remold one’s self-image is a lot of work.
I like how Joyce is catapulting Joe out of her room. She’s so strong.
She One Punch Womand Becky’s dad after all.
it’s not joever yet sarah
Yeah, making out didn’t take the fundies away instantly…
I really want to “like” Sarah, as opposed to “understand and tolerate her”, so I’m hoping she starts actually taking in new information at some point soon here instead of coasting on anger and beginning-of-year impressions.
Without knowing what’s been happening between them, it seems like this came out of nowhere, which fits very easily into Joe’s pickup artist shit
two steps forward, one step back
They go together ‘cause opposites attract?
saying it that way is only going to make them think you fucked him more
Wow, full 180 from being totally cool given the situation (the jab last panel wasn’t a jab so much as a statement of truth :/ and allowable, c’mon) to…I mean seriously Sarah, pretty much slut shaming.
Aaaand the sibling realization is postponed, apparently.
…god dammit, Sarah.
Meanwhile there is a guy covered in chip crumbs walking out of a room full of pants-less women and thinking nothing of it.
