I misread it as “I think if I wanted to blow up my mom, I’d have texted Sarah”. Which I consider also plausible (although not as good a choice as Ruth).
Ruth said she was going to, but it was in a last panel, and last panels are often punchlines exaggerated for comedic effect, ie, broken promises that we’d get to see somebody suplex Carol.
well, not afraid enough to where she’d still show up even if she didn’t have to actually get past ruth this time but depending on the parents they’ll always find a way to worm themselves into a kids lives unless they literally move halfway across the country or file a restraining order
Aww this sweet moments is likely going to be ruined as soon as Carol returns. That or the comic shift to Dotty or Sal and Walky’s dilemma with their parents.
“this is my girlfriend, joyce. and this is joyce’s girlfriend, dorothy”
Tho tolerance of shenanigans and dealing with close proximity aside i can imagine a handful of the cast all moving in w/ each other even if they aren’t all together
I feel like the house even being sold is something of a shoe drop as it is, but there’s probably going to be some other stuff, like if this is her way of just spiting Hank, or if she is leaning into all of the religion even harder due to her shittiness making her double down on it.
There’s also stuff like “What if she finds out about Jocelyn, or Joyce does? Maybe we meet Jordan finally? Will John come into the picture and be shitty? Is he still in India by now?”
He’s leaving in January, the month the comic is currently in. I don’t think we’ve been told if anyone went to the wedding in India, or if anyone has met Christi. They (or just he, if Christi isn’t real) might be grifting missionary money.
Or leaning into all of the religion even harder because it’s all that’s left of her life. Her children are all out on their own and/or avoiding her; she just split with her husband, who now despises what she’s become; we know of no friends or occupation outside of church.
If I remember correctly, it’s when she and Becky went home a while back. Before the time-skip, and I believe in-between the two major incidents with Becky’s dad (after he’d come to take her out of school and went to jail, but before he teamed up with Amber’s dad Blaine and then both of them got killed).
Correct, yeah, when Joyce returned home and had found things had changed, both in people being shitty to Becky and Joyce having grown into a young woman who doesn’t swallow up the bullshit people feed her as much anymore.
I’m thinking back to the Walkyverse moment when Joyce tried to seduce Joe & he didn’t take her up on it. He had the same protective instinct toward her there that I see in him here. I remember being like “huh! Joyce & Joe!?” — but knowing it wasn’t quite right for them (& knowing Joyce & Walky were in the cards!). Now I get to have them together & right for each other! Thanks, Willis!
We noticed 😀
I misread that first panel as “I think if I wanted to blow things up with my mom, I’d have sexed Sarah.”
it would work
It’s not too late.
I mean either way would work.
I mean…yeah that would’ve worked.
Yeah, why not.
I misread it as “I think if I wanted to blow up my mom, I’d have texted Sarah”. Which I consider also plausible (although not as good a choice as Ruth).
Like a malevolent booty call. Man, someone should write a webcomic about that…
The booty is calling from inside the house!
The Return of the Triangle Smile!
Yes, I was going to say that if no one else had. But you have, so I don’t have to. 😀
Then my work here is done.
I wonder if Carol would be afraid of Ruth
You mean, afraid of the RA that suplexed her?
Yeah, I’m up for round two.
Wait what?
That did happen
Oh man, I forgot this happened! So glad I decided to start rereading DoA. I’m in July 2018 right now.
She entered the dorm also does anyone have a link to that? (by which I mean Ruth suplexing Carol.)
Ruth said she was going to, but it was in a last panel, and last panels are often punchlines exaggerated for comedic effect, ie, broken promises that we’d get to see somebody suplex Carol.
Here’s the page where Ruth says she’s going to suplex Carol, and here’s the aftermath where she says it ended up being more of a tackle and drag.
On one hand, she often made over the top threats about taking femurs. On the other hand, she did suplex Blaine in strip.
https://www.dumbingofage.com/tag/ruth+carol/ though
Only hit for Ruth and Carol together:
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2020/comic/book-10/04-is-a-song-forever/instructed/
I got thank the DoA community and it’s ability to find any strip and post it with expediency
A power so great it can only be used for Good or Evil!
And to be clear, that’s an inclusive or. We can use it for both simultaneously.
Tragically, it happened off-screen.
Carol fears nothing, she has the power of god and anime* on her side.
*”Anime,” in this case, being eighteen years’ worth of Joyce’s childhood drawings and the emotional manipulation potential thereof.
well, not afraid enough to where she’d still show up even if she didn’t have to actually get past ruth this time but depending on the parents they’ll always find a way to worm themselves into a kids lives unless they literally move halfway across the country or file a restraining order
That last panel cracked me up.
This relationship feels so real and wholesome.
And that’s what makes their relationship dynamic so adorable/entertaining.
SQUEEEEE!
Jesus you two. You already won. Now you’re just doing a victory lap.
Aww this sweet moments is likely going to be ruined as soon as Carol returns. That or the comic shift to Dotty or Sal and Walky’s dilemma with their parents.
I don’t this could get any more wholesome.
Then it’s option 4. When they hear the ‘plop’, laugh loud enough Carol hears.
Last panel would make an awesome phone lock screen.
This gets in the way of my Joyrathy ship, but it’s still pretty damn adorable.
If you mangle it enough you can get Joe, Joyce, and Dorothy into Joyrathy. And multiple wives is very biblical so her mom can’t even object.
“this is my girlfriend, joyce. and this is joyce’s girlfriend, dorothy”
Tho tolerance of shenanigans and dealing with close proximity aside i can imagine a handful of the cast all moving in w/ each other even if they aren’t all together
That’s a good sign! This is a cornerstone of me and my boyfriend’s relationship.Long live annoying each other!
And yes, these two are cute.
Definitely saving that last panel for future reference
Now kiss
“I think if I wanted to blow things up with my mom, I’d have texted Sarah.”
…what, have you lost your phone?
No, she just doesn’t wanna blow things up right now.
i’m sure she’ll walk back in at one point but idk if carol is planning on ‘staying the weekend’ like walky’s/sal’s parents are
Have we ever seen Joe’s mom? Like at all ever? Do we know anything about her beyond that Richard cheated on her?
I think Joe mentioned that she’s autistic? Or at least suspected to be? Other than that I’m not sure.
In a flashback when puberty hit Joe.

Karen Rosenthal character model
On-panel? No, like I think maybe in a patreon one or something, but I don’t recall us seeing her on-screen yet, just like Danny on the phone with her.
Only in a patreon strip. She was telling a friend how proud she was of 12 year old Joe for being kind, courteous and reading philosophy.
And then puberty happened and he ended up a lot like his dad, to which she commented “Oh no.”
Pretty sure she’d be proud of how hes doing at the moment
We saw Joe’s mom in the Walkyverse. Here she is offering to buy Joe a scooter.
(With his dad’s credit card as it turned out.) https://www.itswalky.com/comic/buy-your-love/
literally do not know if my heart can sustain this, send help
We’re getting closer to the shoe drop.
I feel like the house even being sold is something of a shoe drop as it is, but there’s probably going to be some other stuff, like if this is her way of just spiting Hank, or if she is leaning into all of the religion even harder due to her shittiness making her double down on it.

does he actually live in india? or doing ‘volunteer’ work there, i would’ve assumed it was just that the wedding happened in india
To be honest, it’s been ages, so I have no earthly idea.
Sorry ,I was trying to scroll and hot flag! I did not mean to flag you!
You murderer
I don’t think anything comes of it unless a bunch of people flag, no worries, it’s a known issue.
Missionary work in India. He doesn’t live there, but last we heard he was soon leaving on another trip.
He’s leaving in January, the month the comic is currently in. I don’t think we’ve been told if anyone went to the wedding in India, or if anyone has met Christi. They (or just he, if Christi isn’t real) might be grifting missionary money.
“Might be”?
Mustangs don’t pay for themselves, you know!
Or leaning into all of the religion even harder because it’s all that’s left of her life. Her children are all out on their own and/or avoiding her; she just split with her husband, who now despises what she’s become; we know of no friends or occupation outside of church.
She could be more participative in church, working as deacon or even a missionary.
That last panel is perfection in self-referental communication.
Joyce will be Joyce, with how she toys.
I love these two’s rapport way too much.
date a gal/guy/enby who you can annoy 8D;
So I suppose that one week-end was during the time-skip and there isn’t an actual strip about it, right?
If I remember correctly, it’s when she and Becky went home a while back. Before the time-skip, and I believe in-between the two major incidents with Becky’s dad (after he’d come to take her out of school and went to jail, but before he teamed up with Amber’s dad Blaine and then both of them got killed).

First text seen in strip: https://www.dumbingofage.com/complain/
Continues the next day: https://www.dumbingofage.com/roundtheclock/
The reveal is near the end of “When God Closes a Door”.
There’s a patreon bonus strip flashing back to the first text she sends.

Thanks.
I reiterate:
AAAAAAAA these two!
Joe’s the only one who’s been able to really, really make Joyce smile like the days of old in a long time, so yeah. :3
As much as I ship Joyce with Dorothy… that smile in the last panel!
Joe: *attempts to be suave*
Joyce: *shoots down suave Joe because of fun*
Joe: T_T
I’m thinking back to the Walkyverse moment when Joyce tried to seduce Joe & he didn’t take her up on it. He had the same protective instinct toward her there that I see in him here. I remember being like “huh! Joyce & Joe!?” — but knowing it wasn’t quite right for them (& knowing Joyce & Walky were in the cards!). Now I get to have them together & right for each other! Thanks, Willis!
That’s how you know it’s love
We were meant for each other. Perhaps as punishment.
My spouse and I have this poster.
These two dorks are so freaking adorable.
true bonding is annoying each other
Joe is so handsome ♥
Criminally so
That’s my weakness! A cute person grinning at me and saying they like annoying me!
Dang, if I were Joe I’d be in deep here. Mind you I think he already is, so same hat I guess?
(this is a joke)
Seven years ago the strip said that Walky was going to throw a flaming engraved skull at Dorothy when they broke up and Willis has failed to deliver!!
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2016/comic/book-6/03-when-god-closes-the-door/prepaid/
this is adorable and so so real. big fan of the joeyce dynamic so far
I’m half-expecting Carol to forcefully separate them when she comes out of the bathroom, telling them to “save room for Jesus”.
And that’s when Joyce reaches her breaking point.
RETURN OF THE TRIANGLE GRIN
Idk how you do it, but this feels _real_, like people actually act/react like this. And loving that joyce smile.
These past 2-3 strips also, in the best possible sense, have a Faye and Bubbles from Questionable Content vibe, to me.
The sincerity and the joy with which she proudly says so…
