Luckily Joyce after the first exposure to REAL PENIS IN REAL LIFE ™ it sort of just. Fades into the background. It’s just another piece of flesh of the mass of flesh you are desperately trying to draw to your drawing instructor’s satisfaction….
I’ve never bothered to look up what an “alt code” is or how to use one, because Character Map and a quick web search do all the work for me. And also on mobile, I just have to tap on the little icon for the symbols and they show up, something I can’t do on a standard QWERTY keyboard.
You’re normally under a bit of a time constraint too, so freaking out starts to eat into the 45 min to a hour a model is willing to sit still naked in a room that might not be a comfortable temperature.
This pretty much covers the life art drawings of a certain comic creator Im a Patreon member of. Danielle Corsetto draws them of course but theyre just there in her 5/2/1 minute sketches because they are. Leaving them out would be as silly as not drawing toes.
Funny thing is somehow I never got a male* model when I took figure drawing, but then it was an early class, an audit, and for the most part I couldn’t be arsed to get up for it
*penis-having, but we didn’t have those identities where I lived back in the day
That’s a hoot! Makes me wish I was female… I’d definitely pull it out (pun intended) at karaoke some night after the audience had had enough drinks in them.
She walks up to him as he lays there, her eyes averted. Slowly, her gaze meets his… and she quickly unfolds the paper bag, places it over his head, and returns to her seat to draw. Nobody pauses for more than a moment. Nobody complains. Nobody comments. Class continues.
Joe lounges, bag still hiding his face, as everybody leaves the room. Only once the teacher clicks the lights off does his head droop a little as he lets out a little “okay, fair enough.”
Kinda reminds me of the life drawing class in Giant Days that had a model in a bird (or maybe plauge doctor) mask. It was teased that Esther thought he looked familiar, but it was never resolved!
Excuse me, but when or where did Joyce see one (in canon)? Once she was told what Sarah’s vibrator was (a faux phallus) she let go of that thing so quickly it was still levitating in mid-air in the final panel.
In the hypothetical class where she will be hypothetically drawing one. She’s freaking out about drawing one but not freaking out about the fact that she’ll have to look at one to draw it.
I believe the implication is that her aversion to sex is/has become more performative over any genuine discomfort. She isn’t bothered by seeing a penis, but is afraid of being judged as a result of the her tacit approval of being shown that penis. As expressed by her own depiction of said penis.
She’s afraid it will look like she’s fixated on it if her drawing is intricately detailed while everyone else’s is a sketch.
Conversely, if everyone else is drawing to some level of detail and hers is just an outline, she’ll look like she’s bashful about it to an excessive degree.
Shame she missed Mary’s hell house, she could have gotten a look at one without the stressful setting of a classroom.
It would be the stressful setting of hypocrites telling you that you’re going to hell, but that’s Joyce’s whole childhood, so it would mostly be background noise.
As a reminder, the only people that we’ve seen know about the Whiteboard Dingdong Bandit are Amber, Dina and Becky. Technically Sierra too but she laughed it off.
So either Dorothy was told offscreen, she’s a smart cookie, or she’s just riffing and unknowingly playing into the joke
The text is (to paraphrase) “You asked for Amazi-Girl and I thought someone had drew a bunch of ding dongs again”. From reading it, my assumption is that Dorothy still doesn’t know at that point, and was assuming Joyce wanted Amazi-Girl to identify the artist.
I’m still confused as to how Joyce went from lying in bed with debilitating PMS and arguing over her birth control to walking around with Dorothy chatting about penises.
As a woman who’s experienced debilitating cramps, I’ve definitely had to grin and bear it to get through the day, which could be what Willis is intending to get at here? But it just feels like a confusing tonal shift and it’s taking me out of the story.
Seems latter in the day she could have gotten the pills or she is still in pain or she could have taken some nsaids or the comic explaining it could be a patreon exclusive.
Nsaid’s might I mean they are designed for temporary relief it might not solve all of Joyce’s pain issue sbut it might provide enough relief for her to get out of bed.
Skipping over the emotional stuff: cramps and period pain aren’t always a constant and steady state of pain/flow for the duration of a period. Joyce could very well be having REALLY BAD PAIN/heavy flow that’s interspersed with intervals when she’s in less pain and can function more normally.
Going back to the emotional stuff: as much as I have some notes for Dorothy on some of her choices on how to be a friend, and how to be Joyce’s friend specifically, lately: they have a strong enough friendship bond that I don’t think it’s nuts that Joyce could go from snapping at Dorothy at 7am when she’s miserable and feeling dogpiled about her body to being something resembling cheerful in her company 45 minutes later when she’s dressed and showered and gets to talk about something as fun as her newly published comic that features her best friend, kinda.
It’s a little tonally jarring, but I don’t think it’s that hard to get from A to C.
I’ll let the Ding Dong Bandit be the Crotchless Wonder when she takes a peek at Ken and Barbie dolls. And when she sees the horror of people making anatomically-correct dolls.
Careful, don’t get too detailed, or a med student might get jealous of ya.
I go to a monthly life drawing group where the models are, in fact, nude. The first time I went, it was a bit of a surprise, but I soon got used to it.
You don’t have to draw the naughty bits if you don’t want to. Nobody will judge.
I choose not to, partly because I post them to social media, where my grandmother and the rest of my moderate Southern Baptist family can see everything I post.
While I take and agree with the point that “grow up” is awful advice here, I must still question just how you’ve gotten to this stage in your life without receiving far worse advice.
Sometimes a little hyperbole does a body good. For the sake of a light tone, I sorta left out most truly harmful “advice” I’ve gotten like “Hey Taffy, you should an hero” or “If you’re going to the grocery store, take my car, it’s fine, it’s insured”.

I have to admit it took me a second to remember the Dingdong Banditry and I thought Joyce was saying she actually had secretly drawn pornographic comics.
C’mon Joyce, just admit that this is another case where your fundamentalist upbringing has done you dirty. Thanks to your childhood brainwashing, you don’t know dick.
Joyce, I can firmly promise that not one single person (worth knowing) is ever going to truly care whether or not you’ve drawn a cock recently. Nobody is scrutinising your practice drawings, trolling for schlongs. It’s just not a thing that happens.
when i was a teenager, i used to go to an after-school drawing class once a week.
following my class, there was usually a nude drawing class for adults. my parents couldn’t come and get me straight away, so i often sat in the classroom for an hour or two while the adults did their thing. they did hang a curtain between me and them because, Naked Person 🔞
I didn’t really care though? i would just be sitting there, reading a book or doing my homework. i wasn’t interested in drawing real people then anyway, i was mostly inspired by comic books. The models were boring, regular-looking, sometimes fairly old people, and i don’t remember feeling much curiosity for them. i did catch a glance or two, like, the curtain was seriously symbolic and no one seemed to really care about protecting my innocence. but i think i was mostly like “oh ok. meh”.
i was a late bloomer i should say, and had my puberty in high school when i no longer attended these classes, so maybe that explains my lack of interest? Or maybe i was too much of a do-gooder and legit didn’t even consider ogling because i would’ve been so mortified had my parents found out?
i did enjoy listening to them though. i liked how the artists would greet the model, exchange banal small talk, and then this person just getting naked in front of a bunch of clothed people, nbd. they might ask if the position was ok for them, maybe comment on the lighting. the teachers (there were two of them, an old couple) would walk around and give advice, discuss the model’s anatomy with the same tone as shading techniques. i found i enjoyed it, being quasi-accepted into this sober, adult world, free of the hormonal drama and frenetic posturing of the teenagers around me (i hated everybody, i couldn’t wait to get out of this dumb period of my life, lmao)
haha, the first time I did life drawing I was extremely nervous about drawing naked people. For the first 2 minutes. And then you quickly get over it.
Turns out that if you focus on learning to draw properly, it tends to rob nudity of any immediate horny. Also, the people in front of you are just being people who happen to be naked, not sexy naked people. It’s very relaxing (once you’re past the warm up sketches).
Exactly. I was a nude model from 2005 to sometime after 2012, mainly posing to emphasize my prominent scars on my hip and lower left leg as part of one professor’s anatomy instruction. After the first few minutes of posing it ceased to be sexual in any way.
Don’t worry, I think Willis is OK with revealing story details when it comes to the slipshine, saying “I think the images are what people really pay for”. 😉
gotta say, even though i wasnt in nearly as a controlled environment as joyce, figure drawing classes were still weird. but it’s weird for everyone except people who have been doing them for a while, so, yknow. youre all in it together.
mine were especially weird because they were held at night only and the model was the teacher
Okay Willis, did you go through this exact same mental process but with boobs or did you just through this exact same mental process but with pubic mounds or did you just go through this exact same mental process about The Naughty Bits, Either Sex, period?
I’ve been pretty excited for this subplot ever since we saw that preview panel of Joyce in a life-drawing class over on Tumblr. More learning and exploring and personal-boundary pushing for Joyce! Boy, I love this neurotic kid, and the way she just keeps *growing* out of her constricted little fundamentalist pot.
I started art school at 17 and shy, so in life drawing and didn’t draw the penises, and just kinda left the area blank and it became habit even after I very quickly got desensitized to nudity. None of my instructors gave me grief over it, but I wish I had chosen to draw the dicks because as I grew older I wanted to draw smut but my dicks were clearly at a Lowe skill level.
I know a bulky, well-built young adult who would serve as a good life model while also looking to pick-up ladies easily and present his penis willingly.
gonna have to study lots of wangs to learn how to make them distinctively different to throw everyone off the scent
/birth of a porn lady
So THAT’S how Willis got his start as a porn lord!!
You just *know* he has a secret sketchbook hidden away somewhere FILLED with his “ding-dong” sketches! (and a 2nd one for boobs)
nope.
they’re all full of butts.
ALL of them.
As Dave Bowman said when he entered the Stargate: “My God, it’s full of arse!”
After yesterday, I’m curious if there’s a sketch book full of ‘front butts’.
BUTTS FOR THE BUTT GOD
Joyce *is* being a bit of a ding-dong.
Luckily Joyce after the first exposure to REAL PENIS IN REAL LIFE ™ it sort of just. Fades into the background. It’s just another piece of flesh of the mass of flesh you are desperately trying to draw to your drawing instructor’s satisfaction….
Oh neat it automatically superscripted the tm in parenthesis.
If you’re using Windows, like I am, you can always pull up the Character Map and, under Times New Roman font, you’ll find all sorts of wierd and unusual characters such as foreign currency symbols, alphabets in Cyrillic, Greek, and other foreign languages, and all sorts of various symbols including things like ©, ®, §, ♫, ♀, ♀, and the four card suits, as well as subscript and superscript numbers (useful for chemical formulas or mathematic equations). Just select, copy, and then paste into your message, just like I did in this one.
That was supposed to one female symbol (♀), one male symbol (♂).
Oh well…
Heh. Character Map is your friend! I use ™ ° ® © often enough that I wrote down the ALT codes and stuck them to my monitor, so when I make a post about having a Bad Idea™, I don’t have to look it up or wrack my brain trying to remember “0153”. 😀
I just search for “trademark symbol” and copy it off a web page somewhere.
Because lazy.
Same.
Yuuuuuuup.
I’ve never bothered to look up what an “alt code” is or how to use one, because Character Map and a quick web search do all the work for me. And also on mobile, I just have to tap on the little icon for the symbols and they show up, something I can’t do on a standard QWERTY keyboard.
Or you can google it. Most unicode symbols will show up if you search the right thing.
You’re normally under a bit of a time constraint too, so freaking out starts to eat into the 45 min to a hour a model is willing to sit still naked in a room that might not be a comfortable temperature.
Stares into the middle distance as she remembers the 5/2/1 minute sketch exercises that she never could get a hang of.
Remembering all the times I posed nude back in the 00s and 10s and how cold they kept the studios.
This pretty much covers the life art drawings of a certain comic creator Im a Patreon member of. Danielle Corsetto draws them of course but theyre just there in her 5/2/1 minute sketches because they are. Leaving them out would be as silly as not drawing toes.

A pretty piece of flesh…
I dunno, sometimes it just prompts you to sing an absolute banger of a song:

That’s a hoot! Makes me wish I was female… I’d definitely pull it out (pun intended) at karaoke some night after the audience had had enough drinks in them.
…wait, did Dorothy never learn that Joyce was the Whiteboard Dingdong Bandit?
She might have.
Sorry, the link didn’t post:
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-6/01-to-those-whod-ground-me/rightfully/
She wasn’t present when Joyce confessed to Becky
Or when she confessed to Sierra.
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2014/comic/book-4/04-the-whiteboard-dong-bandit/cleaning/
Meh, you get over the nudity thing real quick. At least I did. From experience the drawing of genitalia is usually optional.
Heh, like Joyce sits in one day and has some of the best anatomy out of any of the students and Malaya starts side-eyeing her.
Malaya would probably respect her chutzpah. Randomly sitting in on a class and acing the material isn’t fakey.
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2018/comic/book-9-comic/01-flyin-to-the-red/careful/
Inb4 Joe is the model and Joyce has to deal with that can of worms. I really hope that comes to pass, it will be hilarious and awkward.
The model’s tattoo was a definite hint.
How is Joyce freaked out about drawing a penis but not about seeing one?
Excuse me, but when or where did Joyce see one (in canon)? Once she was told what Sarah’s vibrator was (a faux phallus) she let go of that thing so quickly it was still levitating in mid-air in the final panel.
In the hypothetical class where she will be hypothetically drawing one. She’s freaking out about drawing one but not freaking out about the fact that she’ll have to look at one to draw it.

Penis penis penis.
Do womens’ bathrooms have lots of genitalia-based graffiti? Mens’ certainly do.
After spending a week cleaning them, yes they do, and pretty much identical to men’s restrooms.
She’s afraid it will look like she’s fixated on it if her drawing is intricately detailed while everyone else’s is a sketch.
Conversely, if everyone else is drawing to some level of detail and hers is just an outline, she’ll look like she’s bashful about it to an excessive degree.
A penis is mightier than a sword. Mighty scary.
Shame she missed Mary’s hell house, she could have gotten a look at one without the stressful setting of a classroom.
It would be the stressful setting of hypocrites telling you that you’re going to hell, but that’s Joyce’s whole childhood, so it would mostly be background noise.
I think Joyce would have abandoned the idea of mary’s hell house. Not exactly anything fun in there either.
What are you talking about? Dina had a lot of fun at the end!
Yeah! 🦖😆
So did Ruth and Billie.
Actually I just remembered that Dorothy made a mention of it when Joyce was at the hospital after punching Ross. So I think she knows.
I found the comic you were referring to here:
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-6/01-to-those-whod-ground-me/rightfully/
Have we already played The Sweet’s “Little Willy” here? I forget.
You could play “Big Ten Inch” by Aerosmith.
Or “My ding-a-ling” by Chuck Berry.
Nah, none of that. Let’s put
on the hacked muzak instead.
… Eh, close enough.
At least the link goes where it’s supposed to.
I love how even Dorothy isn’t above finding the humor in this scenario.
And so we are to witness the birth of Porn Lord Joyce.
I’ll go grab the popcorn and drinks!!! Yay!
It’s definitely a little jarring. I don’t know if it’s ‘okay, I’ll explain it later’ or ‘I’m tired of this storyline, moving on’.
Welp, for me confidence boosts from seeing my work published also tended to override pain of cramping and inflammation if only for a little while. 😉
Also cramping / pain like this in general is often an on-off thing, just so you know.
That worked for her ‘yesterday’.
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2022/comic/book-12/04-dont-stop-billie-ving/pain/
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2022/comic/book-12/04-dont-stop-billie-ving/toog/
Yeah that. Now if only I could crank out games even a fifth of that rate…
Seems latter in the day she could have gotten the pills or she is still in pain or she could have taken some nsaids or the comic explaining it could be a patreon exclusive.
Birth control wouldn’t be likely to have such an immediate effect.
Nsaid’s might I mean they are designed for temporary relief it might not solve all of Joyce’s pain issue sbut it might provide enough relief for her to get out of bed.
Maybe she got around to taking her pills, and/or is trying to prove to Dorothy that she’s perfectly fine and doesn’t need pill taking support?
But yeah, it threw me off too.
yes, I do not get it either. I feel like I missed a weeks worth of comics strips.
But at the same time, I am really glad to see Joyce being something other than miserable- having a normalish conversation.
Yeah, could have used another peep of other characters so it seemed more time had passed.
Careful, don’t get too detailed, or a med student might get jealous of ya.
starting this week’s #tbt right on time, I see!
Do they know you go to life drawing sessions?
I’ve used the hashtag #lifedrawing.
And it’s not like I had super-strict parents. (They let me watch Monty Python when I was 9.)
Gotta do some stratified dick sampling or SDS.
Convenience sampling might be more likely because she’s not gonna walk around the room.
Best advice for you Joyce: grow up.
That has to be the worst advice I’ve ever seen or heard, from anybody, ever.
Agreed!
And anyway! In this comic, growing older makes you dumber! It’s in the title and everything!
Is this why all the parents are so awful? They just Dumbed of Age?
While I take and agree with the point that “grow up” is awful advice here, I must still question just how you’ve gotten to this stage in your life without receiving far worse advice.
Sometimes a little hyperbole does a body good. For the sake of a light tone, I sorta left out most truly harmful “advice” I’ve gotten like “Hey Taffy, you should an hero” or “If you’re going to the grocery store, take my car, it’s fine, it’s insured”.
Thirded. I conjecture from that comment that the poster is quite young.
BarerMender has previously mentioned being around for the 1920s before, and described them as “Less roaring, more storing”. We never did get clarity on what was getting stored and where.
pass
😊
An artist’s gotta do what they gotta do. (whips out drawing tablet)
In my life drawing classes there were always a couple of Joycelikes but they always got over it pretty quickly.
The art history classes always talked a lot about classical nudes being “clothed in metaphor” for the same type of student.
I’m imagining someone trying this in front of a judge as a defense for public indecency.
I won’t deny: it was a shock first time I joined a class.
I have to admit it took me a second to remember the Dingdong Banditry and I thought Joyce was saying she actually had secretly drawn pornographic comics.
“Now…say my name.”
“…Y-you’re…the Whiteboard Ding-Dong Bandit.”
“You’re goddamn right.”
C’mon Joyce, just admit that this is another case where your fundamentalist upbringing has done you dirty. Thanks to your childhood brainwashing, you don’t know dick.
Literally and figuratively.
She’ll throw them off the trail with photorealistic vulvae.
Perfect faces.
Dorothys smug little smiles are just so precious
I second this observation
The faces in this strip. All of them.
Would be extremely funny if Joe ends up being the model
It’d be great, though I feel like there’s a non-zero chance it’d be Jacob, which would also be kind of funny.
Oh no, I’m going to have to look up penises for reference material at home!
New chapter of book 15 title: Joementum.
Maybe it is just me. But it is really nice to see Joyce having a normal, well normal for Joyce, somewhat light hearted conversation.
Honestly, I forgot Joyce was the Whiteboard Ding Dong Bandit
Joyce, I can firmly promise that not one single person (worth knowing) is ever going to truly care whether or not you’ve drawn a cock recently. Nobody is scrutinising your practice drawings, trolling for schlongs. It’s just not a thing that happens.
What if they recognize her style as the “Whiteboard Ding Dong Bandit”?
Sounds like her problem, I’m not her keeper.
To penis or not to penis
That is the question
Or Dorothy knows about Joyce’s “accident” with the whiteboards or she thinks Joyce spend hours hid in her corner drawing naked man.
The last Joyce’s phrase is, actually, a good advice in observation drawing.
storytime!

Being a teenager around adults who can be mature about nudity sounds like a dream.
I AIN’T GOING BACK HORNY JAIL!
haha, the first time I did life drawing I was extremely nervous about drawing naked people.

You know, we’re all focusing on the idea she might have to draw a naked man, but what if she has to draw a naked woman and suddenly has an epiphany?
There may be a reason she’s not focused on this possibility.
I have a guess, but I won’t say anything, because I have to spoiler the Willis Slipshine porn comic.
…I feel like that the teacher being the model MAY have been a conflict of interest. Hard to be objective about your own body, after all
Okay Willis, did you go through this exact same mental process but with boobs or did you just through this exact same mental process but with pubic mounds or did you just go through this exact same mental process about The Naughty Bits, Either Sex, period?
I’ve been pretty excited for this subplot ever since we saw that preview panel of Joyce in a life-drawing class over on Tumblr. More learning and exploring and personal-boundary pushing for Joyce! Oh god, please send her to art class. I want that laugh so badly.
Also, vaginas and breasts
You rarely get to draw the really naughty bits if memory serves
Life studies class huh?
I know a bulky, well-built young adult who would serve as a good life model while also looking to pick-up ladies easily and present his penis willingly.
