Jennifer is never going to like Dorothy for the same reason so many commenters hate Dorothy. Jennifer only likes people more flawed than she is. If she likes anyone.
Honestly one of my favorite things about this comic is that most of the characters are self-aware wrt how deeply fucked up they are, but this awareness does not translate into magically being able to fix themselves.
I think if you’re gonna be any kind of leader let alone that of “””the free world””” getting people to like is not gonna get you far unless your’re also fine with other people hating your fucking guts
If she really plans to be a moral politician who’s not corrupt, she’s gonna be sorely disappointed in all the other politicians she has to deal with, assuming she doesn’t eventually get corrupted as well.
Depends on how you define corruption I guess. Democracy almost by design means you’ll have to compromise on something. It will be up to Dorothy to decide what that is and hopefully it won’t too often be her morals. Especially if she hopes to reach any office close to the presidency.
It’s sort of confused in the telling. They keep saying Ruth taught her and Ruth definitely put the idea out there first. But I believe Jennifer actually taught herself.
Dorothy (1) being very perceptive and (2) showing a welcome bit of edge/pushback here. (And (3) offering some genuinely good advice that Ruth is already doing her best to dismiss and ignore, because Only She Can Solve This Problem (by throwing herself on the grenade of self-sacrifice and misery).)
“In a freak coincidence, both the jet and the freight train are converging on one spot… Where the tectonic plates in the earth’s crust have just started to shift! That spot is the house of Farmer Brown Dorothy Keener who, at this moment, is unaware of a gas leak, as she attempts to light her gas stove!
Oh no! I was on such a streak of successful HTML linking (even on mobile B) I got cocky and failed to check. Here, we go. Linky link link
I actually found it by searching for “C&H penny on the train track” because i remembered how hilarious i found that line. Speaking of hilarious, i didnt rember the following strip but it is perfection and sadly has only increased in relevance (I may be biased cos it ran on my 6th bitrthday)
Bringing up the fact that Billie can pick locks adds kind of a new layer to how unhealthy this relationship is. Like, it kinda sounds like Ruth is actually on some level afraid to break up with Billie because Billie would start stalking her if she did. The fact that this isn’t an unfounded concern is deeply troubling.
Exactly. “She’ll double down on staying” isn’t acceptable in any relationship. If someone breaks up with you, even if you think they’re wrong and being self-sabotaging, you accept that break up and get to the business of moving on. Otherwise you’re just stalking and coercing them, but still not dating anymore.
Dumbing of Age Book:… 12? Is it 12?: Oh, I’m Going To Fumble This Hard. And It Will Be Violent, And Blood Will Be Spilled, But At Least NOW There’s Someone To Calmly Explain My Rationale In The Aftermath.
Except that happened in Book 10, what with Toe Dad and Mike both getting offed by Blaine and Blaine getting iced by the crooked cop in the hospital. And Faz getting beat up and left on the corner.
I gotta say I still don’t buy the “For your own good” narrative. Dorothy didn’t even break up with Walky for his sake. It was really for hers. She couldn’t prioritize him, and her studies and her grades reflected that. She made a decision in that moment what was more important to her, and her academic career won. Also, they tried the whole “take a break” strat and failed hard. So, it was kind of a slow death.
Dorothy isn’t claiming it was for his own good. Oddly, Ruth isn’t claiming the breaking up was for his own good, but that the blindsiding was for his own good.
That makes no sense either. He’d ended up moping around in depression and further neglecting his failing math grade because of it. Not that it was even really a blind side to begin with since they did fail at trying the break and Walky was already having his doubts they’d make it work cause he thought he was dragging her down. A lot of parallels in these relationships. Probably because most teenagers are dumb and young of age.
I agree that Walky wasn’t blindsided, but Ruth who is making the claim doesn’t know that. She only saw Dorothy’s breakup with Danny who was blindsided.
But she did volunteer to be the bearer of bad tidings in both cases.
In this case, Ruth is definitely projecting so she can excuse her decision. I’m also surprised that Ruth knows anything at all about the break up, either their relationship stuff travels fast (not unprecedented) or Ruth secretly hides in the shadows of her charges so she knows what they’re up to (the most likely option).
Interestingly while Dorothy didn’t really break up with Walky for his own good or even blindside him, Walky was thinking about breaking up with her for her own good before the pause was suggested.
And it was also partly because she had a last minute realization that she’d been treating him badly, but I don’t think that’s quite the same as “for your own good”.
I’m kinda dreading a curveball. Like this is already not going to go smooth, but she’s laying out a clear plan here, and when you say the plan in a story it never goes as anticipated
Today I remembered that Knowing a Outcome already, then learning the story of how it happened, doesn’t make it hurt less…
If anything I now feel even sadder knowing what was going through her head and probably still is, and that her feelings are 100% being put on hold by herself just so she can, in her mind, protect the person she loves. Its 100% Ass Backwards, and is only gonna make her spiral again, and give Billie trust and anger issues even more so then she already has.
I like Dorothy. She’s 1000x more mature than I was at that age and her heart is in the right place.
I didn’t go to Yale but I did go to a top SLAC. I think some people will dislike her for the same f-d up misogynist reasons Trump got elected. For the same reason some people can’t stand seeing happy successful people on Facebook. And there’s nothing she can do about it in the absence of a magic wand that would change her sex.
I like Dorothy too!
…then again I’m easy mode. I basically like everybody.
Hey Nicoleandmaggie, I ‘be been curious, are you two people sharing an account, how does this work? Are your comments written by Nicole OR Maggie on any given day? Does Maggie have to review and approve Nicole’s comments and vice versa? Are you both equally into Dorothy or does one of you go along on condition the other let’s them simp for some other character, say Hannelore in QC?
#2 doesn’t read this comic, I don’t think, but across the internet it could be either of us. No reviews. Our big disagreements are about mushrooms (yum) and eggnog (yuck), and she has the brain capacity for more difficult fiction than I do these days.
I’m not on easy mode— I dislike a lot of people (and #2 is even more of a misanthrope). But I’ve also got pretty good self-esteem and part of my job is getting college students to achieve. I don’t tend to dislike people just because they’re in the uncanny valley of perfect/imperfect or have big dreams.
I dislike Dorothy because I think all of the other characters are more interesting and have better story arcs. So clearly that is why people voted for Trump.
Given that she’s mostly there to serve as a sounding board/catalyst/etc for the characters with “more interesting story arcs” I’m guessing that maybe if you really examined why you disliked her it would be because of her emails or you like smart women just not this one.
Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t think disliking Dorothy specifically is evidence of some overarching misogynistic tendencies, and I can only hope you’re implying it sarcastically.
Pretty sure N&M here is not being sarcastic, this came up during the #Faith-Off.
I think their point is that some of the instances of Dorothy hate are specifically motivated by her being a woman with political ambitions. Im a CIA dude with zero ambition so i dont know that i’m convinced though it may be for lack of attention and awareness. but the double standard to which women with ambition are held irl is real enough and worth keeping in mind, just in case.
(Sorry if I’m speaking out of turn #1 I feel like you’re not as constantly online today as I am (high bar, I’m sitting in a long-distance coach with nothing else to do) and since these pages only really last one day… I’m sure you’ll argue Dorothy v. haters much more eloquently than I could if you do swing back here later today)
I admit, I am curious what your analysis would be is I would love a flash forward where Dorothy fails to be President but Becky becomes president of the United States and Dinah is the first lady.
And maybe Dorothy becomes a Supreme Court Justice instead after realizing it was better suited to her skill.
I really kind of wonder what these parts of the comic would be like if we weren’t living in the bad timeline. We talk around here about Robin being seen very differently after Trump won, but Dorothy has enough hints of Clinton that she would look very different in an even moderately successful Clinton presidency.
Ouch. I mean, I think both Ruth and Dorothy broke up with their partners for ultimately flawed reasons, even if both probably needed doing, but I still feel for Dorothy here. That was a low blow.
That said, I do also agree with Ruth’s reasoning that Billie/Jennifer would try to talk her out of it.
I mean, yes, there’s truth in that, but I also can see it as Ruth feeling she and B/J bring out a darkness in each other, if Ruth had not previously had that level of suicide ideation, but given Ruth’s history with Rachel, I don’t know, maybe this wasn’t new from her, after all.
And given Jennifer/Billie’s DUI and how Alice acted when she ran into her, this wasn’t entirely new for her, either.
Ruth: I am worried about my relationship with Billie and I think I should break up with her.
Dorothy: Have considered calmy discussing your concerns with your partner.
Ruth: Yes, I did, but she might accuse me of being self-destructive and try to assuage my fears. I want to very messily and violently destroy my relationship instead.
Am I ascribing ruth too much self-awareness here? I feel like she very clearly understands she’s being self destructive and I dont think self destructive people are that aware of it until afterward.
I mean, Ruth has made her decision based on the rationale that she can’t break up with Billie when she’s upset with her and doesn’t want to stay with her because she’s too happy.
I’d just like to point out that Ruth doesn’t want to dump Billie because she’s “too happy” but rather she’s scared that the happiness is temporary and that they’ll inevitably backside into the self destructive tendencies their relationship was founded on
And that they were both okay with their mutually self-destructive death spiral at the time, but now she sees how completely fucked up that was in hindsight.
Sort of. Maybe.
I do think that’s too self-aware for how I’m reading this.
I’m still reading it as Ruth thinking she’s self-destructive and wanting to protect Jennifer from that, not as her thinking that the pair of them feed into each other’s problems and are thus bad for each other.
She sees how fucked up the suicide pact was, but wants to change that by getting Jennifer out so when she suicides, Jennifer will be okay.
Which is a nice parallel to Jennifer trying to push Ruth away so she could keep on her own drunken spiral while Ruth got better.
it “was” not a healthy relationship in any way, shape or form.
Now I see they get straight (no pun) and when its getting better someone decide for both its too good and better end now because reason just like every third romance
Franco isn’t a native English speaker, I believe.
But they read to me as saying, “this is a tired trope-y pattern”. Not sure if they mean in fiction or irl
I suppose as a “President-Of-the-USA-in-training” getting people to like you must be one of the skills you have to practice. But seriously, Dorothy, pick your battles.
I was mostly in Ruth’s corner on this, but now I’m not entirely sure. It’s kind of a dick move to get Dorothy involved in this way. I can only hope that when the moment comes, Dotty purposely drops the ball and leaves Ruth to deal with her own mess.
Ah.. I see how Ruth and Dorothy’s relationship could have gotten worse after this. I forgot the option “Ruth asks for and takes Dorothy’s effort to be a helpful person just to spit on it.”
Not assigning blame here’ exactly. I think Ruth intended to listen until she realized Dorothy wasn’t just going to say that she should do it, but Ruth’s thought about it a lot, and knows Jennifer better than Dorothy does.
I think it’s fine to tell someone they don’t know what they’re talking about, but you really shouldn’t have asked in the first place if you weren’t okay with both answers.
That’s the one that reboots the series and has the main character say “Fuck you” at a giant worm, isn’t it? All these shoot-’em-up platformers sorta blend together.
I can’t tell if you genuinely know nothing about these games or if you’re being intentionally shitty with the misinformation like you’re trying to “sportsball” us. Comedy is subjective, but you should really know the subject, then.
Do I need to have an encyclopedic knowledge of every shmup game to make a joke, or something? Alright I admit it, I know that Bayonetta isn’t a Metal Gear game, you caught me. Not sure why it’s “shitty” to joke about video games though, and I definitely don’t know what you mean by “sportsballing” you. Is that a “dunking on” reference, like do you think I’m denigrating gamers or something? I shouldn’t need a personal knowledge of the people here to say something that’s mildly false in a harmless way.
Metal Gear Rising is not a shoot-em-up (nor is Bayonetta). “sportsball” refers to intentionally misnaming a sport to indicate that one does not know or care about either the sport in particular or sports in general.
It’s been years since I played either one, but Snake and Bayonetta both shoot stuff a lot in their games so I ran with that. I could have googled it and pretended to have known all along that they’re both stealth games (Metal Gear is stealth? I guess I was fooled by the wacky cutscenes), but that would feel dishonest. I still don’t think it’s a good idea to assume malice over something as low-stakes as “being wrong about video games”, though.
Your googling has been confounded by the broader Metal Gear series of games that have generally been stealth, but Metal Gear Rising, as well as Bayonetta, are generally considered (in order from most specific to most broad terminology) spectacle fighter, or hack’n’slash, or action-adventure.
To be clear, I am only here to clarify things. I hold no ire to your lack of knowledge in this area.
^ I lOVE this avatar. & i dont know why. I would make it permanent if it wasnt …problematic. it feels frictionless to my personality despite nothing in common. Nothing reflected about me, so nothing distorted.
It’s not anyone being a cop, Adam was talking about himself and I think the point was that he liked it as randomly assigned, but would feel weird about claiming it himself by making it permanent as a Gravatar.
I was thinking a couple steps past that, toward a hypothetical person who might take umbrage at that user having that avatar, and referencing that hypothetical behavior. Sorry for not, in hindsight, providing that context in the first place.
Incredibly . . . bold of you to assume Dorothy broke up with Walky for his sake.
But you know what, sure. Nothing is more important in a relationship than a lack of communication. I’m sure I got it right.
In case you’re serious (and/or others weren’t already aware): “Danny Don’t You Know” is a song written to the singer’s younger self, saying basically what he wishes his future self could have said to him back then, since he grew up to have a successful rock band and gets to do things he always wanted to do. It’s a really good song.
sadly for Dotty, I think BJ only likes people who are at least a little bad
A little?
Also, every time I see BJ my first assumption is that people mean the cat.
Billie Jean ?
Bennifer Jillingsly.
Billifer Jenningsworth is my preferred variant. XD
Jillings Worth Ben of Her
Contray to what you may have heard she is not my lover. She’s just She’s just a girl who claims that I am the one. But the kid is not my son.
She is just a girl
Not the wisecracking meatball surgeon from San Francisco who replaced Trapper in season 4?
Jennifer is never going to like Dorothy for the same reason so many commenters hate Dorothy. Jennifer only likes people more flawed than she is. If she likes anyone.
Is Dorothy not flawed? Is her tough skin not a bit of a mask? The flawlessness is a front, dog.
The self awareness on all sides is scary.
Honestly one of my favorite things about this comic is that most of the characters are self-aware wrt how deeply fucked up they are, but this awareness does not translate into magically being able to fix themselves.
Sarah is the best character since she’s reached the stage of acceptance and is more than happy being a misanthrope.
Or she was (happy) until a certain triangle-smiled girl forced her to accept that she cares.
Agreed. Or if not FULLY how deeply fucked up they are, a non-zero amount.
Knowledge that you’re fucked up is only the first step to not being FU. There are thousands of steps after that.
So true. u_u
At this stage in college, who wouldn’t wanna?
Ruth Lessick, telegrapher of moves.
BLOOD WILL FLOW
FEMURS WILL BE ABSCONDED WITH
Showing me how they broke up wont make me less mad at you willis.
^^ This.
😳😳😳 uh oh
She can’t get Billie to like her but maybe she can get Jennifer to like her
Dorothy really invests too much in what other people think of her.
I mean, she plans to be a moral politician who’s not corrupt. That’s pretty much gonna be her main goal.
Wait. Ruth taught her to pick locks. Is that how I remember it?
No, Jennifer taught herself. Ruth put the idea in her head though.
What part of ‘You taught me to pick locks’ are you still refusing to understand?
Man, the next page is feels, given this
Even that page:
“This time you almost got rid of me. You were trying to get rid of me again.”
You mean the part where Ruth says she feels she needs to choose between her addictions to both Billie and murder?
…she’s made her choice
It’s sort of confused in the telling. They keep saying Ruth taught her and Ruth definitely put the idea out there first. But I believe Jennifer actually taught herself.

…THAT IS NOT DOROTHY’S JOB, RUTH!
Or it wasn’t. It is now.
Voluntold
It really comes as no surprise
To find that you planned it all alo~o~ong
You’re not part of the mediation.
You’re part of the autopsy.
You can’t be a part of the solution if you’re the precipitate. Chemistry 101 joke.
Though the words Mr. Random is putting into Ruth’s mouth are more situationally appropriate.
Just gotta say the Billie-Ruth stuff has been goddamn poetry lately
It’s always been the good shit, but it’s firing on all cylinders right now.
It’s always good to know the engine is firing on all cylinders as we head towards the train wreck.
I think this is a Crash at Crush situation, where the engines on both characters are firing at all cylinders right towards each other.
“In a freak coincidence, both the jet and the freight train are converging on one spot… Where the tectonic plates in the earth’s crust have just started to shift! That spot is the house of

Asher probably already knew how, but played along anyway because he wants to be supportive.

This might actually benefit from short and to the point.
Dumbing of Age – Book 12: BLOOD WILL FLOW
No, wait. That was Ray Radlein.
Dumbing of Age – Book 12: BLOOD WILL BE SPILLED
That’s better because otherwise we’d reach the part about Joyce’s period and people would be faked out.
BRILLIANT!!!! You’d make a good demon, Clif! 😈
The only good demon is a bad demon.
Or something like that.
The drinks will flow and the blood will spill, and if the boys wanna fight ya better let ’em Thin Lizzie
Except that happened in Book 10, what with Toe Dad and Mike both getting offed by Blaine and Blaine getting iced by the crooked cop in the hospital. And Faz getting beat up and left on the corner.
Might be a little two spoiler-y to have that as a title, no?
Anyway how have you been Regalli? Great to see your commenting as usual!
Eh, Willis titled one of the books ”Hey Guess What, I’m a Lesbian!”. Doesn’t get much more spoilery than that.
That was ONE spoiler. Wellerman clearly meant Regalli’s suggestion is, and I quote, “two-spoiler-y” (emphasis mine)
(I jest Wellerman I know its a typo and I know you hate them, I couldn’t resist =P)
I feel like someone probably called this 😅
Which part of this. That Ruth going to Dorothy for advice wasn’t actually for advice at all?
Called the whole thing? Probably not.
Trying to get the bully to like you isn’t really a good idea
I gotta say I still don’t buy the “For your own good” narrative. Dorothy didn’t even break up with Walky for his sake. It was really for hers. Yes, this is a terrible idea based on terrible logic.
I agree that Walky wasn’t blindsided, but Ruth who is making the claim doesn’t know that. She only saw Dorothy’s breakup with Danny who was blindsided.

Ruth was there when they broke up. She asked Dorothy to let her do it since she wasn’t allowed to do it for Danny.
Since you beat me to it I’ll just post the link.

I should hope not.
Jennifer’s just gonna be right behind her having heard the whole thing.
Jennifer’s halloween costume is Dorothy, and it’s REALLY good.
Tchekhov’s temptation of fate
dorothy’s always been a cute character but I feel like the way she’s been drawn lately has been extra cute
Joyce would probably agree
Well, now you’re the awkward middleman!
Congrats, you’re gonna hate it, there’s no benefits and it makes everyone mad at you. Have fun!
It’s good practice for being an honest politician.

So its a tautology.
Logic cannot penetrate.
I don’t think that’s true considering she was talking about “losing Jennifer in the worst way possible “
Ok is it “you are too good to be with me” soap opera bs or im not paing attetion?
I think the whole self-destructive suicide pact that isn’t far in the rear view mirror is worth keeping in mind.
I mean, that’s certainly soap-opera worthy, but this is not a healthy relationship in any way, shape or form.
it “was” not a healthy relationship in any way, shape or form.
Now I see they get straight (no pun) and when its getting better someone decide for both its too good and better end now because reason just like every third romance
Third romance?
Like “one in three romances” I think they mean
That still doesn’t make much sense to me in this context.
Franco isn’t a native English speaker, I believe.
But they read to me as saying, “this is a tired trope-y pattern”. Not sure if they mean in fiction or irl
Oh, I don’t think Ruth thinks Jennifer is “good”. She does seem to think she’d be better off without her tho yeah
This breakup better take place on the roof, because all of this is garbage.
I suppose as a “President-Of-the-USA-in-training” getting people to like you must be one of the skills you have to practice. But seriously, Dorothy, pick your battles.
This feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I was mostly in Ruth’s corner on this, but now I’m not entirely sure. It’s kind of a dick move to get Dorothy involved in this way. I can only hope that when the moment comes, Dotty purposely drops the ball and leaves Ruth to deal with her own mess.
Ruth and Dotty are a surprisingly solid comedic duo, tbh
Did Ruth just literally say “for her own good?” yes, i’ll have that slice of humble pie now, please and thank you
I believe Ruth on the “blood will be spilled” part
“Memories broken
The truth goes unspoken
I’ve even forgotten my name
(…)”
Oh hey, I loved Bayonetta. Such a good soundtrack.
Metal Gear Rising, actually :3
This conversation is wild
Mike becomes Ruth and Ruth now becomes Mike.
only the Gay die young
^ I lOVE this avatar. & i dont know why. I would make it permanent if it wasnt …problematic. it feels frictionless to my personality despite nothing in common. Nothing reflected about me, so nothing distorted.
What’s problematic about using one of the default avatars? I haven’t seen anyone else make that comment about getting a Liz icon.
Adam Black is probably not a black woman? (that’s how i read it, anyway…)
Still, it seems weird to be a cop about what race every user is and whether it lines up with their randomly-assigned avatar.
Oooh, “bold”, I see what you did there
I still think this is a terrible reason for Ruth to be planning to break up with Billie.
Ruth
I want to grab and shake you
Bruh I’m gonna snap
Yes, Dorothy. Ruth just “rubber-duck-talk”ed with you.
🤣
Just found this one and it looks like it was written by someone who comments regularly here:
https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=W7UiqNQlFlg&list=RDAMVM6pIe2UmrWLY
The playlist or the song by Ninja Sex Party?
The song, I thought the URL was just for the song and not the whole playlist.
I’m just gonna say it y’all, leaving people “for their own good” is shitty and condescending
Entirely agree. You basically decide that they aren’t adults, since they cannot make their own personal choices.
Ruth’s reasons make no sense at all, yet they are framed as something with deep meaning…
I don’t understand anything that’s been going on in this comic since Mike’s death…
