Is it gonna be like Persona midterms where they answer two multiple choice questions and are DONE FOR THE DAY NO TIME TO DO ANYTHING ELSE, WEEK SQUANDERED
*clock ticks forward hours, days, months in an instant*
*Amber holds her forehead in her hand*
Ruth: You couldn’t POSSIBLY have taken out two grown men by yourself, one of whom was wearing body armor. You had to have an accomplice who knew how to deflect a ball-peen hammer.
Magician: Walky (immature but with great potential for growth)
Priestess: Dorothy (highly intelligent, but has difficulty balancing instinct and logic)
Empress: Billie (very obsessed with her image, can be motherly or destructive)
Emperor: Joe (very male, but also has a protective side)
Hierophant: Leslie (a teacher and positive role model)
Lovers: Becky (cheerful, outgoing, and a proponent of love/romance)
Chariot: Jacob (driven individual overly focused on goals) (Dorothy would also fit here, but I think she works slightly better as Priestess)
Justice: Sal (stoic and concerned with fairness)
Hermit: Sarah (prefers to hide away from others and support from a distance)
Fortune: Joyce (seize their own destiny in spite of fate and make difficult choices that change their lives)
Strength: Dina (not easily upset, shows surprising inner strength when tested)
Hanged Man: Amber (caught between two selves)
Death: Ruth (undergoing a cycle of change)
Temperance: Ethan (struggles to find a balance between life and hobbies)
Devil: Mike (seemingly uncaring, but dedicated to a cause)
Tower: Robin (arrogant character fallen from grace)
Star: Carla (an overwhelmingly positive attitude)
Moon: Mayala (projects her own fears and insecurities onto others)
Sun: Marcie (an optimistic character burdened by the crushing weight of reality)
The Fool Arcana often doesn’t represent a person but rather the team itself.
As for the Wild Card, not all Persona games include such a character (Personas 1, 2, and 2.5 did not, while Persona 5 had several Wild Cards who were also represented by other Arcanas).
Both Wild Cards in P5 are The Fool (unless there’s some new twist in Royal). The other Wild Card hides their true nature, but Loki was a high-level Fool Arcana in both P3 and P4.
Y’all know Mike’s clearly Justice. His agenda with Blaine looks more or less like what Akechi’s to [REDACTED] if Akechi had met the PT’s sooner, by Akechi’s own admission. Which is to say-idiotic ruthlessness in the pursuit of an incredibly warped and misanthropic sense of…yeah.
The (upright) tower represents a catastrophe, a crumbling into chaos of what was a previously solid life/world/whatever. Which… okay, kinda fits with Mike’s heel realization. Fittingly, three stories up.
But the Hanged Man is about self-sacrifice, which fits with what came a moment later. And it’s also about being suspended between moments, between one story coming to an end and another starting, in a state of uncertainty about what comes next. Which is exactly what Willis is doing to us.
So, yeah. Sticking with Hanged Man.
I wonder how the rest of DoA’s story beats fit with the Major Arcana. I mean, half the cast would be The Fool on the first day of classes…
Persona 5 certainly has the most streamlined mechanics.
That said, as Shin Megami Tensei fan, I find it very odd that Persona 5 is considered a good one for newbies. The final boss is basically gibberish unless you know some deep lore.
What, you’re saying most casuals DON’T possess a working knowledge of Gnosticism and Jungian psychology, the collective unconscious in particular? How could that possibly – okay, yeah, no, can’t finish that, P5 is pretty damn esoteric by any measure.
Heh – I actually meant that the final boss of Persona 5 is likely a fragment of the final boss of SMT: Nocturne and part of the same Chaos vs Law battle that has been a part of the main SMT series forever as most recently demonstrated in SMT:4.
SMT – doing complex and interconnected lore only hinted at in the actual game since decades before Dark Souls (which I also adore).
But yes, one can get by with merely a working knowledge of Gnosticism and Jungian psychology.
I think it’s more that, at least up until the final stretch, Persona 5 is exceedingly approachable on both a Lore and (more importantly) gameplay level.
Then the last section hits.
…
I played Final Fantasy 9, and even that was less of a “Giant Space Flea From Nowhere” ending than Persona 5’s…
Yeah, 3 has some really outdated mechanics. Also the male route has… some pretty problematic parts with the SLs.
4’s a good playing experience, but many of the jokes and issues really have not dated well. 5’s a little better on that front but has, in my opinion, a realm problem with character screentime balance.
4 is probably the most balanced game to start off with, in my opinion.
Persona 4 Golden is a good entry point I think personally. It is the most optimistic and upbeat, it has some sexual humour and some very awkward parts (Yosuke’s mild homophobia, Teddie’s perverted behaviour at times, the two women that can’t find love) but the characters all stand out, still has solid gameplay and some good social links going on. Also, there is some really nice family bonding in this game that to this day I still adore. Every day’s great at your Junes is a jingle that will never leave my brain because of this game.
If you find it really too upbeat for your liking, I’d go backwards and play Persona 3 Portable. Why? Because I like the FeMC better but also because it has better mechanics than the original. It has a much darker storyline than Persona 4 tonally and if you choose the male MC in particular, there is less a sense of closeness. Some of the social links the male MC has are. Very messed up in fact.
Persona 5 is a more mature game than Persona 3 or 4. It tones down on sexual humour a lot (there is still some but far less than previous games) and deals with a lot of serious issues. If you have a low tolerance for sexual humour, this is a good entry point as Persona 5 Royal is coming out soon which will have additional content. This game has a good sense of closeness and familial bonding, and has the most streamlined mechanics. However, this game does dive into dark territory FAST, and it may be triggering to some people as it does go straight into abuse and sexual harrassment topics. It does make the first boss all the more satisfying to take down though.
Didn’t get a chance to play 5, but be forewarned that 4 has a very disappointing plot because it holds your hand the entire time and does a poor job of foreshadowing. 1 and 2 might be harder to get ahold of, but 3 does a pretty damned good job of story-telling, even if you guess the twists in it. I’d second another commenter’s recommendation to grab P3P. You’ll miss out on some of the fun of 3/Fes, but the female route is really well done. Her character feels a bit more fleshed out than the male protagonist.
Bonus points. You can play P3P on the go via phone (PPSSPP) or handheld, though, uh, you’ll probably sit and play for hours at a time anyway.
Followed by Amber describing AG waking up in the Other Jail, hanging out with otherworldly beings of human cognition performing executions on sweet, lovable, innocent monsters.
Given that AG seems aware of the split more than Amber, and I had AG down with a Motivation of Responsibility, I am disappointed in her. There should have been a note, an alarm on a phone, a prominent bloody glove, something.
Given that BLAINE said to Amazi-Girl “You’re better than Amber”, I’m guessing that AG concluded that she sould give Amber more body sharetime, because Blaine is the personification of wrong.
Just when I thought there is no crueler author than Andrew Hussie, David Willis appears and makes his characters suffer a lot. Want Joyce to learn about balancing her faith and her sexuality? Fat chance! Willis will make Joyce become a nihilist! Want Walky to get out of his career and make something true to himself? No chance! Willis will make use read 8 months of Walky goofing up in an unfunny and annoying way that makes us question the true intent of Willis’ narrative. Is Willis trying to retell his younger years or just an experiment of trolling and causing pain for his own amusement?
No, but last night she was certainly acting like one. I think it’s gonna be a bit before equilibrium reasserts itself.
And friend, trust me: I’ve been waiting on the Billie subplot to actively pick back up on ‘Billie is clearly depressed and using drinking as self-medication and taking care of Ruth as a sign she’s clearly Fine since Ruth’s functioning so much more visibly depressed.’ That one was on the subtext backburner since August 2014 until last year. Eight months is nothing.
(Equilibrium reasserting itself here meaning ‘Joyce finding a functional worldview and morality that she can find meaning in,’ even if that isn’t religious in nature.)
Okay I don’t necessarily agree with your overall statement but I was literally just yesterday thinking of commenting something along the lines of “jeez, and I thought Hussie’s cliffhanger plot jumping was bad, but Willis you have officially overtaken him.”
Pretty sure this is just a normal tool for any sufficiently large story world. Why wouldn’t you exploit the tension of a cliffhanger when you have so many other things you could be watching?
I’m theorizing that this is going to be how Danny and Ethan figure out how bad the personality split has gotten. The report is going to include a sighting of AG, and they’re going to want to know what happened.
Yea, Willis most assuredly did NOT say that he’s recently broken one of his cardinal rules. So Mikes probably fine… I mean, paralysed from the neck down…but fine. Or…dead. Probably dead. Of course, comics being what they are he’ll prolly keep popping up in peoples flash backs for decades.
Presumably people will be talking about the fight on campus last night. Someone might have told Walky about what happened to Mike, sine he’s Mike’s roommate.
No, Amber will remember how receptive Dina was to Becky last night. The likelihood is that the two of them slept together (literally slept together in this case) last night.
I’m suddenly reminded, wasn’t there a strip a while back in which Walky was speculating on whether or not people whose roommates died were given an automatic pass on the semester’s grades?
I’ll look for it tomorrow, though I’m having some vague memory right now of it being during a walk to class following Joyce’s toenail incident. That’d be some freaky foreshadowing, though, if so – Walky being Mike’s roommate and all.
She doesn’t seem to have self-worth issues in her computing classes at least – every time we’ve seen her in that intro to computer science class she’s programming an OS from scratch and hacking the professor’s printer to turn in her homework.
Does that mean, the split between Amber and ag is not 100% complete yet? Amber seems to remember that something big happened, without remembering the actual event.
They are definitely split. Amber is aware something happened but it is AG’s memory and she can’t actually access it so of course clearly this feeling must be about midterms.
The “Amber and AG don’t share memories anymore” Chekhov’s Gun has been fired, but I’m still waiting for the other “Joyce isn’t answering her dad’s calls” shoe to drop from yesterday.
So what you’re saying is that Mike didn’t fall to his death, but rather fell through a tear in reality itself, so that all evidence of his existence has been erased?
Is it gonna be like Persona midterms where they answer two multiple choice questions and are DONE FOR THE DAY NO TIME TO DO ANYTHING ELSE, WEEK SQUANDERED

Which arcana does Mike go under? Chariot seems plausible.
I had him under Devil.
Ahem. (copy paste make-up!)
Magician: Walky (immature but with great potential for growth)
Priestess: Dorothy (highly intelligent, but has difficulty balancing instinct and logic)
Empress: Billie (very obsessed with her image, can be motherly or destructive)

And what of the Fool?
The school is the fool

My vote is for Danny

By that I mean, who is the Wild Card?
Maybe Mary’s the Devil, and Mike’s the Fool?
You all have had the wool pulled over your eyes.
The Devil is OBVIOUS.
We damn him at every turn of the story events.
Chariot has wheels
Carla has wheels
Carla is Chariot
This. You wins the internets.
I’d buy this tarot from DYW.
Last shot we had of Mike was upside-down. Hanged Man.
“You should be grateful.” – Munehisa Mike
Kudos on your knowledge of the Major Arcana, but for that image The Tower falling down would be more applicable.
Is it, though?
I need to get me a Persona game and finish it one day. Maybe 5 would be a goodone to try and finish.
4 or 5 would be my recommendations.
I found them the most accessible for a Persona newbie.
Persona 5 certainly has the most streamlined mechanics.
That said, as Shin Megami Tensei fan, I find it very odd that Persona 5 is considered a good one for newbies. The final boss is basically gibberish unless you know some deep lore.

Hey, it worked for Xeno-.
Xenogears (and Xenosaga by being a semi-prequelish thing) is my favorite piece of media of all time.

**Grin**
It isn’t “from nowhere” if you’ve played the rest of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. See any “Order” ending therefrom.
Yeah, 3 has some really outdated mechanics. Also the male route has… some pretty problematic parts with the SLs.

Gah. A few weeks ago, I engaged in a lively conversation where I figured out what everyone in DoA’s Arcana were.
This is clearly meant to be now. No stopping this train. Choo Chooo!
Followed by Amber describing AG waking up in the Other Jail, hanging out with otherworldly beings of human cognition performing executions on sweet, lovable, innocent monsters.
(What has Mothman ever done to you, Justine?)
That’s my secret, Ruth. I AM the accomplice.
I was initially disappointed at the tease but thank you for making me excited through a Persona discussion instead.
What would Blaine’s palace look like guys? (pls no spoilers)
Goddamn you Willis.
Yeah mostly that one
Every Damnation adds a day to Willis’ buffer and a Hot Shot to his Hot Shot shrine.
Tomorrow, guest strip from J.J. of Dina eating cereal.
“Teacher says, every time Willis is damned, an angel gets sodomized!”
please bear in mind that it is the angels and not the sodomites who are the villains in that story.
This is beginning to feel like Willis’ way of beating into people’s head the concept that Amber and Amazi-girl are two different people.
Yes, this so very much.
Argh. The suspense is awful! 😛
God dammit Amber
Is this a new record of most original comments in the 1st 10 minutes?
Or, you know, someone’s possibly dead, kinda important too.
What’s the protocol of informing your DID alter ego that one of their closest long-time friends is dead or seriously injured, a note? Sympathy card?
Singing telegram.
Eliminate the extra steps.
Precisely the clip I wanted, thank you!
Shared diary, I think.
Given that AG seems aware of the split more than Amber, and I had AG down with a Motivation of Responsibility, I am disappointed in her. There should have been a note, an alarm on a phone, a prominent bloody glove, something.
Message written in blood on the ceiling over their bed.
You can’t forget what you don’t know about, and it’s been a while since AG and Amber shared memories.
Okay but I wish they would start leaving each other notes or something 🙁
That would be nice, before AG wakes up with Danny in her bed or (fingers crossed he won’t) Mike dies.
… Before I got to the last word there, I want expecting there to be one.
I think by this point it is more likely that Amber will go to sleep after jumping Wally and AG will wake up next to he who so sculpted of caramel.
Walky not Wally, damn autocorrect
Fuck, I meant Walky. My bad.
At least she knows they’ve been making out now. It won’t be a complete surprise.
I’m wondering if it’s gonna get to the point where Amazi-Girl is actively trying to overtake Amber.
Given that BLAINE said to Amazi-Girl “You’re better than Amber”, I’m guessing that AG concluded that she sould give Amber more body sharetime, because Blaine is the personification of wrong.
willis pls 😭
Guess we’ve just stopped in the middle of this terminal situation.
DAMN YOU WILLIS
the ideal feeling, those five seconds of bliss between waking up and remembering you have midterms
Will Walky pass math? The draaaaaaama!
Meh he will probably get a C- also is Mike okay or at least alive I dont do the patreon so I don’t know.
Lol do you think they know? They’re only one day ahead, we probably won’t find out for like a month :/
Sorry, we’re sworn to secrecy on all future strips.
You can totally ask us about bonus strips though, those are fair game. Irrelevant to Mike’s survival, but fair game.
Did Carla pie Mike’s face, this is very important.
There was a pie.
There was a face.
ORRRR you could become a Patreon 😛
I did join patreon, but I don’t want to see the pages in advance.
what? no! not midterms, it’s raid night! you need to prep some buff potions.
Dina is not sleeping on her dinosaur. Likliehood of Becky sleeping with HER dinosaur increasing.
D’awwwwww 😍
Agreed. Unless they’re all at the hospital with Mike.
That would be acceptable
Nah, they don’t let Becky in there any longer.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2016/comic/book-6/04-it-all-returns/message/
Nice 👍
Or Amber could have just slept in. It was a busy night.
Such trolling for our emotions xD
Loving It!
Oh God, no! Not MIDTERMS!!!
Dammit Willis god DAMN I have too much energy
Right, dammit Willis!
10-ish years for half a semester.
No chance! Losing one’s religion doesn’t make them a nihilist.
It does however put them in the corner, and put them in the spotlight.
haha!
Where they say too much, they don’t say enough.
I got that reference.
They’ll have to choose their confessions
I’ve been living on the tiny crumbs of Joe’s charactsr arc for years. Dude makes like one appearance every eight months.
Eating at Arby’s does that.
I know but. This is utter mastery. And also cruelty. That I respect, appreciate, and also despise.
Tl;dr – Just because it’s done frequently doesn’t mean it’s always done so WELL.
Mike would have been proud of Willis. That said, it sounds like someone is overreacting,
“Is Willis trying to retell his younger years or just an experiment of trolling and causing pain for his own amusement?”
¿Por qué no los dos?
I’m theorizing that this is going to be how Danny and Ethan figure out how bad the personality split has gotten. The report is going to include a sighting of AG, and they’re going to want to know what happened.
Auuugh this is killing me!
GODDAMMIT
>:C
So we’re not going to learn about Mike until the funeral?
Is that a voyager class Windblade?
…Yes. Midterms. That is what you are forgetting, sweetie.
Now would sure be a great/terrible time for her and AG to start sharing memories again….
O.O!!! Dangit!
(Hacked Muzak ahoy)
LET’S START A RIOT!
A RIOT!
LET’S START A RI-O-OT!
I thought nobody died in this strip?
Not dead, but injuries are likely.
Willis did say he broke one of his writing rules recently. And he’s always been free to change his mind.
But even if not – you’d be surprised what you can live through.
“Alive” is a broad category
In all fairness, Amber, most of us also forgot about your midterms for some reason.
God
damn
you
Willis!
I have a midterm on Friday so I guess I’m the only one here who agrees with Amber’s priorities.
Good luck!
Willis is obviously trolling us now.
*in the voice of Tim Curry’s the Darkness* Damn you!!!!!
Dina’s plushie needs a name and a tag.
Dinoplush.
Velociplushie.
I’m fairly sure it has a tag, something about Robyn’s re-election campaign? Oh wait, you mean it needs to BE tagged?
Tag, the dinosaur plush.
Can’t reuse names, and “Tag” is definitely the cricket. Period and end of story.
Other Tag, the dino plush.
Yes!
I thought Tag was the lettuce.
Oh come ON! Willis, Fer hankypanky sake!

Presumably people will be talking about the fight on campus last night. Someone might have told Walky about what happened to Mike, sine he’s Mike’s roommate.
*scribbling* What’s the cosine of that though?
Dina’s dino bed is empty, that might be a clue. Or not.
No, Amber will remember how receptive Dina was to Becky last night. The likelihood is that the two of them slept together (literally slept together in this case) last night.
On the bright side, Walky no longer has to worry about failing math this term.
#sorrynotsorry
I’m suddenly reminded, wasn’t there a strip a while back in which Walky was speculating on whether or not people whose roommates died were given an automatic pass on the semester’s grades?
So he could be a scholar and a serial killer!
I think so, I just don’t remember when it was.
I’ll look for it tomorrow, though I’m having some vague memory right now of it being during a walk to class following Joyce’s toenail incident. That’d be some freaky foreshadowing, though, if so – Walky being Mike’s roommate and all.
For someone with Amber’s self-worth issues, Midterms are easily the equal of a major battle!
She doesn’t seem to have self-worth issues in her computing classes at least – every time we’ve seen her in that intro to computer science class she’s programming an OS from scratch and hacking the professor’s printer to turn in her homework.
It was all a dream. By Amazigirl. Which Amber has forgotten.
If it WAS a dream, that would explain Blaine’s sudden costumed alter-ego and newly-revealed physical abilities.
But that definitely leaves one thing unexplained: how would AG/A have known or even suspected that Blaine and Ross had teamed up?
Does that mean, the split between Amber and ag is not 100% complete yet? Amber seems to remember that something big happened, without remembering the actual event.
They are definitely split. Amber is aware something happened but it is AG’s memory and she can’t actually access it so of course clearly this feeling must be about midterms.
No, it’s…KEVIN!!!
The “Amber and AG don’t share memories anymore” Chekhov’s Gun has been fired, but I’m still waiting for the other “Joyce isn’t answering her dad’s calls” shoe to drop from yesterday.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2019/comic/book-10/01-birthday-pursuit/freakoutable/
All I can say is, I’m really glad I’m not a Pateron.
Oh gods, midterm.
*Walky hops energetically out of bed*
What a beautiful day! So optimistic! So full of potential! Today’s the day I fix all my problems and get my screwed-up life back on course!
…
Hrm, usually at this point, someone makes a bitter, sarcastic remark that tears a hole in my optimism…
*shrug* OH WELL!!
*dances out the door*
So what you’re saying is that Mike didn’t fall to his death, but rather fell through a tear in reality itself, so that all evidence of his existence has been erased?
This is sad.
Me: (don’t say it don’t say it don’t say it-)
Me: “Carla, play despacito.”
Me: (DAMMIT!)
Seeing Dina’s big dinosaur in today’s strip reminds me — Willis, when you do your next Kickstarter, that stuffed dino has to be one of the magnets.
“Also that I need to poop.”
Tomorrow on Dumbing of Age- Amber squats on a toilet. BBBrrrrraaapppp. Flush.
Call back to the very beginning. DOA started with a poop joke.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2010/comic/book-1/01-move-in-day/home/
I’m impressed!
Now he’s just trolling us
You only figured this out now?
The dino plushie is watching us!
