This required some digging, but here’s my first drawing of both Dumbing of Age Robin and Leslie, which I believe I drew while at Animefest in Dallas last year, the week or so before Dumbing of Age premiered. So this drawing’s almost exactly one year old!
I finally get to, you know, show it, now that somebody’s out of the bag.
Congresswoman Robin DeSanto in today’s strip is drawn from my memory of this sketch, and so I’d forgotten that I’d drawn her with her hair down and had given her a dress shirt and tie. Eh, no big. I like what I ended up with.
Vintage Robin and Leslie, woo!
I like the final version…the original, depending on the color, is almost identical to the Navy’s “dress blues,” the uniform a female officer would wear for formal occasions…like working with politicians. All she’s missing are the shiny bits – collar flashes, rank tabs, medals – and the silly hat. Not an outfit a congresscritter would wear.
So she wouldn’t wear her hair different every now and then and maybe change her shirt? As Leslie might say, no big.
Undoubtedly, but this isn’t a character who’s going to show up every day. Her job is hundreds of miles away in Washington, after all. This is, for all intents and purposes, her default look.
I prefer the tie, but I’ve always liked women in ties. As for Ron’s comment about the similarity to navy “dress blues,” if she’s running on a family values platform she’d probably like getting that association with military values/culture in.
I was actually curious if she still somehow maintained war hero status in this universe.
