True story: my mum discovered that my uncle and his long-term partner were gay rather than just very good friends who had a flat together, holidayed together, etc, when they announced they were getting married… The rest of us had figured it out a good decade or so earlier but kinda figured they’d tell us if, when and how they wanted to, no big deal.
My mum also only realised that me and the now-husband had sexy times together about 3 years into us sharing a one-bed flat, mind… Yet she assumed my baby sister was sleeping around when she was about 15 because she wears make-up. But also complains that I should wear make-up more often…
My mum means well but sometimes her logic and other people’s logic really do not align. At all. On any plane that mathematicians, quantum mechanics or other physicists have yet to hypothesise.

I dunno if Billie will hold up her end of this relationship, and aside from that they could break up and go their separate ways for any number of reasons, but I’d say Ruth is growing from the experience. I’ll give Billie credit for trying and paying a down payment.

It’s in character for someone like Billie to react to the embarrassment of Ruth’s admission with a bit of snark. In any case, I’m sure that she’ll come up with a better and more nuanced response when she doesn’t feel like death that’s been reheated from frozen.
As a person struggling with depression since childhood I have to say, that taking care of someone (even if it is “just” the cat) is very uplifting and fulfilling.
That does sound nice. I’ve always wanted a cat, but if I can’t take care of myself, I doubt I could take care of an animal, so that’s something for a vague “later”.
Cats are pretty good companions, though.

Honestly, Ruth’s perspective here makes for a pretty good lesson that I could probably do well to incorporate into my own thoughts and my own life. She really is correct, about how it is to really love someone, and I do feel that way too when it comes to those who are important to me…so, maybe, it’s not such a stretch that other people might feel the same way in return.
