There’s nothing wrong with TTG!. It’s just that teenage fans of the original show who are now in their late 20’s just never accepted that they weren’t the target audience anymore. It’s like comparing Fantasia with Bugs Bunny, they’re both good but for entirely different reasons.
Fun fact: TTG! is now in it’s 5th season which is as long as the original series ran, and it has nearly four times as many episodes (which are admittedly shorter), so they must be doing something right.
TTG has a pretty standard episode order – about 26 episodes per season, two segments per episode. But they tend to air the segments on their own and so it looks like there’s a fuckoff huge number of episodes (meanwhile, Steven Universe and OK KO Let’s Be Heroes actually have fuckoff huge episode orders, but their episodes are only about 10 minutes so it’s a fairer trade off). Spongebob Squarepants would probably achieve something similar if it aired its segments separately. Teen Titans had a pretty standard number of episodes in its day too – about 13 episodes (that’s about the same as a Codename: Kids Next Door season, which aired around the same time). The difference is that while other shows with similar episode orders tended to split shows into segments (again, like Kids Next Door), Teen Titans used the full half hour.
Also of note that the “Target” audience is not the same as the actual viewership.
Just like MLPFIM that created Bronies TT had/has a following in the 20+ crowd that were into animation/comics/DC and stories for those not undergoing electroshock therapy. So they will now be in their 30s to 40s.
I was mostly talking about episodes per season, since Kaidah brought up how TTG had more episodes, but this is true. Although it’s also been shown that CN will cancel shows that aren’t doing well in their target audience, regardless of other viewer demographics, so it’s a valid point to bring up.
It would also solve Ruth’s problems with having an authority she neither wants nor deserves, and all the other hall residents’ problems with Ruth having an authority she neither wants nor deserves.
Someone’s tracking economic problems/factors. 🙂
You can always tell the people who’ve struggled with money cuz they don’t forget it exists in fictional universes.
It’s not clear actually. Ruth’s never really shown any signs of it being about money specifically, I think.
She needs it because Sir demands she have it. I assume he’s covering her tuition anyway and could easily cover her housing as well if he wasn’t an abusive asshole.
I know! Such a weird group but I’m really impressed with how it’s working out. Lucy is the kind of personality Ruth needs right now. Her other relationships are so messy. And clearly Lucy just likes to be liked!
Can’t wait for Billie to show up and ruin it though 😀
Actually, I can picture Billy showing up in her room all ready to be annoyed by Lucy only to find out that no one is there. Then she sits down on her bed and just stares numbly at the distance because she can’t find anything to distract her from her inner demons anymore.
Yeah, I love it too! It’s such an unexpected group, but it kinda makes sense in hindsight! It’s also great to see Ruth and Carla (though Ruth especially) go for it.
Yeah, Canadian/back bacon is basically seasoned, filleted pork chops. All the piggy goodness of American/belly/streaky bacon, but with a higher meat-to-fat ratio.
(Thank you both for spelling “bologna” properly! Oscar Mayer would be proud.)
Sort of. Canadian bacon is usually from the back, while pork chops are more from the loin, particularly the area close to the spine and sometimes contains a rib or part of the vertebrae. Though Canadian bacon often includes parts of the loin taken from behind the back, it tends to be leaner and, traditionally, is always smoked, cured, and fully cooked. It also comes in the more delicious peameal form, where it’s been wet cured and rolled in yellow peameal, though that’s not usually smoked.
And before anybody says ham – nah, ham’s the ass cheek of the pig, not the back. 😛 Specifically, ham is a leg cut that has been cured. It may or may not be smoked, but it’s from the wrong part of the pig.
Thank you for laying that out so clearly, and completely, I am smiling before breakfast, and it is a glorius day that starts with learning mroe about Pea Meal. See you at Tim Horton’s!
Speed Racer is a polarizing movie. Either you love it as the glorious spectacle that it is, or hate it for not being the close adaptation of the TV series that it isn’t.
This movie’s biggest problem was that it was released exactly one week after ‘Iron Man’, which sucked all the air out of the room, metaphorically speaking.
Willis: “My readers are such nitpickers.”
Me, sliding a printed out copy of the two versions of the strip across the table to Willis ten days from now: “That’sa me.”
Seems like the alpha sweetie finally got her movie night.
Crafty Lucy.
And silly Ruth and Carla – they should have known from Joyce by now that the only ways to handle that level of helpful friendliness is to run screaming for the hills or give in and join the group hug. There is no middle way.
Ruth. Ruth. Oh, Ruth. There’s no way Lucy fell for your deception in panel 2 for even a second. You realize that, right? You only moved forward because Lucy doesn’t care and is just delighted to have someone to hang out with.
It’s okay, you can still figure out this “casual socialization” thing.
It’s kinda like when people say “aww, so cute I could just eat you up!” Only inside, deep down, for some unknown reason, you want to attack. Like messing up a perfectly flat blanket of snow, or building a perfect lego tower to be suddenly hit with a need to destroy it.
Lucy is so pure that many people in this world would want to harm her just because they can’t accept their own flaws and that cynical views are wrong. Joyce is an example.
Perhaps each storyline she’ll have a movie night with one more attendee than previously, gradually escalating until several books from now Lucy’s become the most important character because at the end of every storyline everyone drops what they’re doing to go to her movie parties!
In 5 books time, she has captured all of the characters visable cast list. In 1.7 million, the entire population of Indiana has fallen before her. 48 times longer than that, the full population of the USA awaits her movie nights.
I noticed the ttg poster and was like huh, really? Hi speaking as a Lucy aged person, most of us still prefer the original series and grew up with it as reruns. Most of us also
hate ttg (I’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s actually a good show most of the time and just wasn’t made for me)
I’m glad to see Lucy still digs Starfire in this reality. Yes, even THAT Starfire, as it’s still very in-character for her. I just hope nothing bizarre happens to make her don a certain yellow & blue costume… (Will this count as one of those “calling it now” posts sometime in the future?!)
Kind of makes sense.
Red pill philosophically is reactionary Monist Idealism. It’s an esoteric but antiplauralism , totalitarianism. One pill= one secret truth.
It’s not a great metaphor for LGBT. For that you would to Skittles.
Though I’m not sure of the actual timing of when they first started using “red pill” I think it was well after Lana was out publicly that it started to take off. The Red Pill on Reddit started in 2012, I think.
So “accidental”, but very much a “should have known” kind of accidental.
Made even more ironic by the “redpillers” spreading conspiracy theories about the “secret” estrogenating powers of soy.
And made ultimately ironic by the same group also being obsessed about taking way too much artificial testosterone in the form of steroids which has an actual “estrogenating” effect on the body.
No they won’t because Carla would never let them into her room.
This raises the possibility of Billie standing outside Carla’s room, surrounded by her adoring fangirls, shouting to be let in. Meanwhile Carla is enjoying quoting the Three Little Pigs.
I liked her positivity , but she’s almost Stepford Wive detached from any expressed negative emotion. She’s not right for Walky either. SHe’s not going to manipulate him or force into going deep ( his ex ,) but when hes upset it will have no where to land to reach. He’ll feel disconnected or like she’s too good for him ( again ) . Amber’s not right for Walky either, but that relationship had a lot more room to grow. They should go round 2. Walky will probably grow a lot more from being with Amber and vice versa.
I agree that she isn’t right for Walky, but how would that be any sort of measurement for a character or a reflection on Lucy in general?
Actually, Walky really isn’t right for her, and I hope she recognises that quickly.
I like that Lucy is always friendly and caring. Such a nice person. So far I’ve had an almost universally positive impression of her. If I was in the comic, I’d want to befriend her based on what we know so far.
In a while, Lucy will realise that Carla lied to her because she wanted to spend time with her. That’s sweet but it’s also tragic that Carla honestly thought that she had to lie to get someone to spend time with her.
Carla does that a lot, but given the transparency of the lies I think its less because she thinks anyone will believe her, and more to just get her “asshole-cred” (or whatever) on paper. It’s all performative.
“Come on, let’s crawl, gotta crawl, gotta crawl
To the Carla Bug Ball, to the Ball, to the Ball,
And a lovely time we’ll have,
One and all
At the Carla Bug Ball”
I don’t see the problem. It’s not like non-English speakers can properly pronounce my real name, nor would I expect them too. A reasonable effort is more than enough as far as I’m concerned.
I dunno, personally I’m a little reluctant to take my mind off of “things”. Where is Billie tonight anyway? What is she up to that she’s out of the dorm, with the other Forest Quad residents in tow or otherwise?
I mean, I must have forgotten that movie about twenty minutes after I watched it. I’m surprised anyone remembers it. I wonder what Lucy finds so… uplifting about it?
She has terrible boundaries. She’s not as good as she seems. Willis has weakened her character to be similar to original Mary in roomies. Her positivity is based on no engagement with others feelings. I actually can’t see how Walky would be bad for her.
But when things are difficult or tense she holds people at arms length. It seems to be her only defense mechanism.
Walky thing is relevant because it’s about an inability to engage deeper emotion s in others if they aren’t sufficiently saccharine. Walky is superficial in his own way but might be growing out of it.
There is a passive aggressive contempt , snobbery on the other side of her sunniness and caring.
As much as I hate it , Malaya had a point. This is DOA. Willis isn’t going to draw Lucy without any character flaws.
Still no Dexter and Monkey Master tags? 😛
In THIS room? It’s Starfire that deserves the tag.
Altho, preferably NOT the TTG! one.
There’s nothing wrong with TTG!. It’s just that teenage fans of the original show who are now in their late 20’s just never accepted that they weren’t the target audience anymore. It’s like comparing Fantasia with Bugs Bunny, they’re both good but for entirely different reasons.

Or in Lucy’s own words: https://shortpacked.com/index.php?id=1860
Oh just go have pizza and movies with the chipper chick you dour jackasses 😛
Wow. Hell of a movie to just jump to. I mean, if Ruth is on some medication, that’s the LAST movie you might want to show her.
Aw, I love that movie.
It’s a great movie!
It’s a STUPID movie, but a great one!
(inb4 I’m in Disney and the wifi can’t be buggered)
You can’t prove she said that thing she said only two strips ago.
Ruth pulls out her phone, goes to dumbingofage.com, accidentally breaks the universe.
“Accidentally”
I’m sure it’s not the first time. I mean, how long has the comic been around? Universe’s probably broken dozens of times.
I claim right of salvage.
Yeah, but where did you register your claim?
It’s been around a little under 2 months. Duh.
She said that A screen was broken. There are other screens.
Like window screens. Or Windows screens.
Lucy as an RA would be great, except I think I’d be more intimidated by a week old kitten soaked in milk.
Of course, I suppose it’s possible to rule in ways other than by fear but…nah.
I’d do whatever she wanted just because I’d feel like absolute garbage for making such a sweet person feel disappointed in me, tbh. 🙂
Sounds a bit unhealthy, mate. That’s how the sweet ones getcha.
Ruling in other ways than fear? I’m sure if that was possible we would have seen Ruth do it by now.
Ruling by guilt is how my sweet old grandma managed a household. Helps if you’re Catholic.
I would not consider that helping though if grandma was Jewish – oy vay.
Oh, come now! Where’s the fun in THAT?
Besides, what if the residents get the silly idea that they’re PEOPLE? 😛
Plot twist: Lucy and Ruth somehow trade rooms.
That would solve the authority issues with Ruth and Billie’s relationship that necessitated Billie having to move here in the first place.
And, like, nothing else about it, but.
It would also solve Ruth’s problems with having an authority she neither wants nor deserves, and all the other hall residents’ problems with Ruth having an authority she neither wants nor deserves.
No, no. They just trade rooms. Ruth stays RA for Read, Lucy doesn’t take over. They just live in different rooms.
Doesn’t she need the RA stipend for tuition and the free housing?
Someone’s tracking economic problems/factors. 🙂
You can always tell the people who’ve struggled with money cuz they don’t forget it exists in fictional universes.
It’s not clear actually. Ruth’s never really shown any signs of it being about money specifically, I think.
She needs it because Sir demands she have it. I assume he’s covering her tuition anyway and could easily cover her housing as well if he wasn’t an abusive asshole.
What a weird trio of friends
Flawed-people-make-an-unlikely-connection-and-make-each-other-better-the-comic.
Now with a trio!
(Only, Lucy is not flawed, she’s too good for this sinful world)
I would count that as a flaw… =P
There’s always something to distract her from her inner demons.
It’s called booze.
But it’s not like it’s a problem or anything.
She has good taste in movies.
Also, I love that the genuinely nice person in the room is getting “yes let’s” responses.
Yeah, I love it too! It’s such an unexpected group, but it kinda makes sense in hindsight! It’s also great to see Ruth and Carla (though Ruth especially) go for it.
what does ruth even like on pizza?
Canadian bacon, mostly just so she can insist that it’s just called bacon.
As if Americans even know what Canadian bacon is, never mind the glory of peameal bacon.
canadian bacon is basically bologna
Nah, bologna is typically finely ground to the point of the absence of noticeable chunks of fat (theoretically anyways). That’s not Canadian bacon.

Thank you for laying that out so clearly, and completely, I am smiling before breakfast, and it is a glorius day that starts with learning mroe about Pea Meal. See you at Tim Horton’s!
I learned about this because I once saw a picture of what an American friend THOUGHT was Canadian bacon and I was HORRIFIED.
Whatever they are putting on my pizza and calling Canadian Bacon, it’s good.
She definitely knows what she likes on pizza, but maybe YOU should tell her, uh, YOUR pizza preferences, and you’ll see if they match up.
Femurs.
She likes it to be covered in maple syrup.
She probs like everything covered in maple syrup, including Billie 🙂
I feel that would make a good slipshine.
(Because it’s running through my head at this instant) *plays The Police’s “King of Pain” on the hacked Muzak*
The internet says the movie is from 2008.
I haven’t seen it either way, and the internet seems to think that’s a good thing as well, though I do like the directors.
Is Lucy just wrong or is the timeline of this particular movie different in the DoA universe
Is anyone taking bets that tonight or tomorrow, Willis will tweet something about how commenters are complaining that he didn’t check IMDB?
(Me. I am taking that bet.)
Maybe in this universe they knew how big Iron Man was going to be and delayed the film to 2009.
I saw IM in theatres and Speed Racer on a rental, which tells you I hate technology, but anyway, Speed Racer got dumped on critically and I love it.
Here She Comes
Here comes “Ruth Lessick”
She’s a demon on wheels…
Or should that be “Carla Rutten”?
Mission accomplished. That earworm has been in my head since this strip posted and you’ve only reinforced it.
The strip currently says 2008. Did I miss the good stuff again?
Yes. When it went up, it said 2009.
In about two weeks, watch for a DYW tweet about how his readers are such nitpickers.
Wow. No wonder Carla likes her.
Ruth. Ruth. Oh, Ruth. There’s no way Lucy fell for your deception in panel 2 for even a second. You realize that, right? You only moved forward because Lucy doesn’t care and is just delighted to have someone to hang out with.
It’s okay, you can still figure out this “casual socialization” thing.
“I of course know what this ‘fun’ is”
Adorable Ruth is adorable. And Lucy is great taking TWO lonely grumpy-pants in a stride.
Lucy is adaptable to many social situations! She’s fully prepared for friends of any size, shape, or disposition!
Hmm yes, I approve of this chain of events that are happening.
Finally, people are acknowledging that the Speed Racer movie was Excellent
I remember it being entertaining, but unfulfilling due to the obvious set-up for a sequel that never happened.
Also a 9 out of 10 theme song.
Lucy would make a wonderful RA and I support her taking Spencer’s job once she graduates.
You know what, Speedracer actually sounds like a really damn fun movie night movie.
“Every time the CGI makes you queasy, take a drink.”
(Disclaimer: This is a bad drinking game.)
. . . So is it weird that I completely understand Carla’s statement there? Like completely and utterly?
It’s kinda like when people say “aww, so cute I could just eat you up!” Only inside, deep down, for some unknown reason, you want to attack. Like messing up a perfectly flat blanket of snow, or building a perfect lego tower to be suddenly hit with a need to destroy it.
Now you know how Mike feels all the time.
Except it’s more fun if you can get them to destroy themselves.
Lucy is so pure that many people in this world would want to harm her just because they can’t accept their own flaws and that cynical views are wrong. Joyce is an example.
I can’t tell if “you can’t prove I said that” is *actually* the funniest shit I’ve read all week or if I just haven’t slept
Will this be a THREE person movie night? Egads, her song shall need updating.
She has now begun her second year.
Is it weird I want plushies of all the DoA characters?
Depends on what you want to do with them.
I’d totally get a plushie of Robin.
Build an igloo of them and live in it.
I noticed the ttg poster and was like huh, really? I thought she liked the old one but then I realized that was in shortpacked and ttg came out long enough ago they were talking about it in shortpacked which was 2013 which was 6 years ago AND with the sliding timescale that means Lucy is 18ish meaning ttg came out when she was 12ish AND the old cartoon ENDED when she was 5ish and WE ARE ALL SO OLD
Hi speaking as a Lucy aged person, most of us still prefer the original series and grew up with it as reruns. Most of us also
hate ttg (I’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s actually a good show most of the time and just wasn’t made for me)
Lucy calling a movie made in 2008 “classic” makes me feel old. And I’m only 30!
Any movie over ten years old is classic.
Any movie that gives you fond memories of a time when things were different than they are now are classics.
Well, yes, but most people will raise an eyebrow at you if that movie just came out last week. ;P
Even, or possibly especially if it is schlocky, an unconscious self-parody or any other form of ‘so bad, it’s good’.
Welp, now I want to watch Speed Racer. I haven’t yet, but it has good buzz around here.
And then I want to see how it resembles another great movie about racing: Ben Hur (the 1925 version).
Hey, when I go classic, I go deep.
God theres no way she picked speedracer with carla in the room by accident this girl knows what shes doin
Crafty alpha sweetie is crafty.
I’m not saying that I hadn’t really heard much of the Wachowskis since the Matrix franchise.
I am saying that I had not realized they are sisters. That threw me for a loop.
Lana came out just before Speed Racer and Lilly around when they were planning Sense8.
If you have Netflix available to you, you should definitely consider trying Sense8.
How did I not know they did Sense8? It’s been sitting in my queue forever, I really need to watch it.
Lucy is making a lot of headway here: Persuading Ruth to have fun and somehow getting Carla to voluntarily allow outsiders into Fortress Rutten!
uh, I didn’t know the Matrix sisters also did Speed Racer.
(and I’m still laughing anytime I remember the “red pill movement” arseholes accidentally named themselves after a coming out analogy)
Kind of makes sense.
Red pill philosophically is reactionary Monist Idealism. It’s an esoteric but antiplauralism , totalitarianism. One pill= one secret truth.

Wait, no, I totally see what’s going on here.
What did Walky tell her about how to get Billie to attend a party?
Invite Ruth. Billie will come.
Where will all the other pod people of Forrest Hall go? Wherever Billie goes.
THIS TIME Lucy will have her movie night in full attendance!
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2019/comic/book-9-comic/02-but-the-sun-still-shines/survey-2/
No they won’t because Carla would never let them into her room.
This raises the possibility of Billie standing outside Carla’s room, surrounded by her adoring fangirls, shouting to be let in. Meanwhile Carla is enjoying quoting the Three Little Pigs.
speaking of theree little kids, I could imagine Billie using the firefigher axe to break in if one annoy her enough
How is she RA material? I mean she’s completely unable to be popular.
….. oh, wait, I get it.
But she also lacks the force of personality to compel obedience from her charges.
…. oh, wait, I get it.
I love Lucy.
I used to love her… In short packed.
The “if you give an RA a cookie” arc is a good example.

Also known as The Story of How Carla Rutten Scored Free Bonus Cookies.
Ah, so that’s her end goal.
The wii tie in game was godly
Ya know, I don’t know why, but I’m starting to get a sneaking suspicion that Lucy was right and Carla was lonely…
Don’t be ridiculous. She’s just there to own Lucy by showing she can annoy her. Carla doesn’t get lonely. She’s just cultivating a new bug subject.
I’m all in favor for the Carla bug club, with Joyce and Lucy as primary members
In my best Burl Ives voice:
“Come on, let’s crawl, gotta crawl, gotta crawl
To the Carla Bug Ball, to the Ball, to the Ball,
And a lovely time we’ll have,
One and all
At the Carla Bug Ball”
Love it!
The important/adorable thing is that Lucy gets that and honestly isn’t terribly concerned by how Carla goes about expressing it.
Nuh-uh, m*f*in’ goddesses are way too cool to get lonely.
¬_¬
Lucy has fantastic taste in movies.
This isn’t really relevant, but “Wachowski” is really fun to say. Try it. “Wa-chow-skiiiiii.”
As a Polish person I can’t help but wince at that assault on my language…
“English: Anglicizing Non-English Names Since 450 CE”
The Pain Through the Ages.
I don’t see the problem. It’s not like non-English speakers can properly pronounce my real name, nor would I expect them too. A reasonable effort is more than enough as far as I’m concerned.
Regarding my last sentence, I should add: when they’re talking to me.
I couldn’t care less about how people I don’t know in Liechtenstein or Kiribati pronounce names like mine.
Ah it’s not really a problem, just a little half-joke about me wincing every time I see a language being mauled. Call it a pet-peeve.
To be fair, it’s really more like “Language X, Language Xifying, non-Language X names since forever.”
Probably Ogg the Caveman complaining that his new tribe pronounced his name wrong.
Heh very much so.
I dunno, personally I’m a little reluctant to take my mind off of “things”. Where is Billie tonight anyway? What is she up to that she’s out of the dorm, with the other Forest Quad residents in tow or otherwise?
My guess…
Drinking?
No, no, no! That’s what I’m afraid of!
Speed Racer? A classic? How? Why?
I mean, I must have forgotten that movie about twenty minutes after I watched it. I’m surprised anyone remembers it. I wonder what Lucy finds so… uplifting about it?
The Wachowskis set out to make a live-action cartoon, and they succeeded far beyond anyone’s expectations.
Lucy is a delightful person.
I feel that I would hesitate before saying her taste in movies is crap.
Lucy is such a sweetheart.
Last paragraph… Agree until recently.
She definitely has problems with boundaries, though I’d look more to a DoA Joyce without the prejudices than any version of Mary.
I’m not sure I see much of the rest of your issues – the passive aggressive contempt or snobbery.
Classic…2008 film…and the Matrix is even older than that.
Nothing makes me feel old quite like realizing the films I still think of as “new” are now actually considered “old.”
