$30-80 is far more likely, given the apparent material (while it looks light and thin when worn, though it’s hard to tell for sure off that alone; However, the ones being carried by the drone are compacted in a way that makes it seem fairly certain that the jackets are light jackets or even windbreaker jackets, which would put them in with jackets that generally range closer to $40) and the fact that it was a free-with-purchase promo item (which, while sometimes super nice, generally aren’t the most expensive items).
Once you get to the range of $150 and up, you’re generally talking branded natural leather jackets, thicker natural leather jackets (eg, decent bomber jackets), or top quality non-leather jackets. Basic natural leather actually already has a fairly reliable presence by $80, and the more expensive jackets generally discount steeply once/if they hit discount or clearance, so generally the price range you listed is only one you come across if you’re prone to buying specific types of jackets or from higher end retailers.
To restate that last paragraph, I mean that higher end pricing is generally exclusive to specific brands or styles, and even then only if they’re not discounted. Most jacket styles won’t break $100 without branding or rare materials.
Also, that “(while” in the first paragraph shouldn’t have a “while” there, sorry. 😛
well, given that it’s Ruttech, it could be an entirely different material (e.g. Tony Stark’s “I’ve discovered a new element”) and/or marketing fail (e.g. my prior employer whose marketing person went overboard and ordered LITERALLY THOUSANDS of branded “can cozies”–which LITERALLY NO ONE uses bc if you have a can drink, it’s either getting emptied immediately or not quickly enough that can-shaped insulation will do much if anything)
I always thought the point of can cozies was to let you drink cold drinks during cold weather without freezing your hands. In retrospect, I’m not sure why anyone would consume cold beverages while standing out in the cold, anyway.
..still makes more sense than using it for maintaining the can’s temperature [in warmer temperatures], though, for the reason you mentioned. 😛
Interestingly, a standard can drink is 12fl oz while the typical bottled drink is closer to 11, so they should get consumed quicker, but maybe people sip bottles more than they do cans.
..Stark is a headache-inducing individual as a hero, but as a layperson in Marvelverse, I’d be pretty devoted to buying Starktech. I mean, the guy basically produces stuff at a level comparable to a fantasy setting enchanter. It’s magic, dammit, and I want it. 😛
Consider this jacket do come free with a motorcycle, so there is a possibility that this jacket is to be worn on a motorcycle.
In that case it could easily be multilayered cotton or even leather. Given my 3 layer racesuit cost 500 (nzd so about 340 usd) and this is basically half of that (if it is multilayered cotton) an estimate of 150 seems pretty reasonable, and you can fold that stuff pretty thin.
It also isn’t out of the question for a top end motor company, which I’m going to assume Ruttech motors is because Carla says it is and I believe her, to have an offer where you get something worth 100 dollars when you buy something that’s probably gonna cost you many times that. Like a bike is going to set you up under back a couple of grand, at least, a hundred dollar jacket isn’t going to hurt their profit.
I said “more likely”. I do have awareness of where motorcycle apparel falls in the scope of things and, yeah, the really good jackets (be they intended for thwarting wind upon a motorcycle or for general cold weather) start retailing (before discounts) at $300+ USD. I’ve just personally never encountered or heard of a company giving away a top end jacket before, but I have seen several lower end freebies.
Likewise, any decent (especially from the perspective of insulation) leather jacket I’ve seen has taken up twice the space, both when worn and folded. Ruttech is branded, so the list price could be fairly high, but I wouldn’t put high expectations on the material.
Moreover, we can see Billie and Carla wear the jacket zipped up, all about the indoors, where others are going around casually in t-shirts. Off that alone, we can infer that the insulation isn’t likely too heavy and, off that, we can assume the quality and style is more likely to fall in the lower range of things.
That said, if I’ve got the timeline and region recalled right, the temperatures they’re having within the comic should be between a 40F and 60F range right now, so we can also argue for the jackets not likely being low-end windbreakers.
I don’t imagine the jacket’d break the $120 range, in any case, but maybe we can get a Word of Willis on the matter at some point. As Ana noted, Ruttech isn’t exactly a normal company, after all, so it could be some hyper-high-end super-breathable-yet-super-insulating jacket. 😛
Didn’t see this post before posting mine below, but…lightweight motorcycle jackets don’t tend to be thin windbreakers, because they are designed to offer protection in a crash. They are usually heavy-duty material made into a mesh so that you can get wind FLOW, but if you crash, you have a decent chance of maintaining your skin in one continous piece. They can fold reasonably thin if you take out the removable pads that almost all models come with, but they run expensive. It’s not just a thin layer of fabric, it’s a thin layer of fabric designed to withstand friction with the asphalt at 50mph+ despite allowing ventilation so you don’t overheat while sitting above a small container of constant fiery explosions 3ft above black asphalt that’s been baking in the sun for hours.
It’s a motorcycle jacket, so likely not TOO thin of a material. Motorcycle jackets operate at a pretty different price point – a light, durable mesh jacket of any brand for riding in the summer is usually a couple hundred. Leather jackets are even more – though I’ve found some good deals out there in the past of only $200 or so for rejected custom jobs.
Damn, now I want one too.
….
I can’t be the first person to suggest this as a Merch possibility, can I? Naw – someone probably did when the jacket first showed up with Sal.
Are their limitations to the methodology?

Okay, so Singularikitty is the offspring of Choo-Choo bear from Something Positive and Sprinkles from Girls With Sling Shots. Some of the characters from Girls with Slingshots show up in a Questionable Content strip but it being canon is questionable. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2986
But Singularkitty is in the Walkyverse, right? DoAverse is different. I read all those comics, but my memory is shit, so I’m trying hard to even remember singularkitty. That was Leslie’s & Robin’s cat, that eats everything, right? (Fun Fact: my shitty memory makes reading the It’s Walky! & GWS reruns fun, as it makes most of them like I’m reading them for the first time again)
Yes exactly, if Girls with Slingshots does in fact exist within the QC verse then the characters of Questionable Content cannot live in the DOAverse. Because they would already live in the Walkyverse.
Even if the prime QC/Something Positive/Girls with Slingshots universe crossed over with the Dumbiverse, those comics would have to take place several years in DoA’s future. Faye’s dad is still alive (he died while she was college age), and she’s closer to 30 than 20 in QC at this point. (Never mind the more fantastic elements of the QC universe, like sentient humanoid AIs, giant space stations, and amorphous pink felines.)
We’re all just floating inside Tommy Westphall’s snow globe.
I choose to imagine this explains how Sal’s presumably cheap, used bike came with a jacket. The drones just monitor all second-hand purchases and zoom in with the new owner’s free jacket.
Privacy concerns? What are those? Do they need jackets too? THERE ARE SO MANY JACKETS.
Considering what Rutech’s analogue gets up to in Shortpacked! and Carla describing them as “overeager”… I wouldn’t be surprised if that drone has an onboard AI capable of collision avoidance… and if you tick it off enough, you wake up in nearby forest. You can’t expect a drone to haul someone all the way to the Amazon, after all.
Perhaps Lucy can show up back at her dorm in the jacket and suddenly be the cool one.
Then she can give jackets to everyone and destabilize “cool” as a currency.
Hey, check it, pretty soon Sal won’t have to worry about her being boxed in or shit, Carla is gonna give a copy of her jacket to everyone on the floor. except Mary.
Mary’s local church caters to the likes of Sierra and Joyce (and a college community in general), so it’s probably fairly liberal. Also, considering the fact that Carla is a fairly private person and it would in fact be detrimental to PR if it were, it probably isn’t common knowledge that the heir to the Ruttech throne is trans. Yeah, I hadn’t really thought about it before and I don’t recall it being brought up here, but somehow “the Ruttech daughter” brought it home to me. Even without “gossip” and reddit crap, the lives of people at that level are sufficiently well documented that they can’t keep it quiet. All the early articles would have said they had a son and at some point they would have had to announce that wasn’t true, that they actually had a daughter.
And it’s probably best to do that publicly and openly support her being trans, rather than try to slip it under the radar because you can’t stay under the radar.
Did Mary stick with that church, though? I only remember her there the first time Joyce went; I don’t recall her being there when Joyce took Ethan, for example. However, it’s a big church and she could have been in a different part of it. I just wouldn’t be surprised if she found a place with people with similar views.
I love how Lucy’s compulsive people-pleasing extends to basically accepting Carla’s special, wonderful brand of BS. It lets Carla get past the “needless abrasiveness” stage and into more normal conversation.
Also, the idea of them becoming friends would be some really funny irony, considering how they each interact with Malaya.
I wonder if Lucy would have said the same thing if she’d bumped into Sal wearing her jacket or if she did actually have a little more to go on about “the Ruttech daughter”.

I can’t imagine they were very close other than that.
They would have to be collaborating electronically since Jeph moved to Halifax. Easier to get to than Placentia, but only just. The good thing for Placentia is Climate Change keeps the Gut from freezing so the ferry gets through all year. The bad thing is it’s still Placentia, and the Gut not freezing means their winter diversion of racing cars on the ice went away.
I got the impression that Carla was a bit nervous asking a relative stranger for what is essentially a big favour: Can Lucy help her dad clear space in their warehouses? Every little helps!
Sal almost certainly, even if only on the grounds of self-aware irony. Mary, as Willis correctly mentions in the Alt Text, would regard them as the Vestments of Sin.
No, Willis is just establishing Ruttech as the ‘Uber-Tech’ organisation that lets him justify any arbitrarily advanced gadgets he needs in future as being ‘something Carla got from her dad’.
Ultra Car felt the need to display their sexual prowess to Lucy once in a bizarre form of one-upmanship. I wonder how Carla will relate to Lucy, going forwards?
I mean shit, free jacket
that’s like, what, a $150 value? $200? damn

Damn, that’s some awesome nerding. 🙂
I appreciate good jackets and gloves. My siblings appreciate good hats and shoes, respectively. So between us, we cover all possible clothing options!
..I mean, other than silly things like pants and shirts, but who needs those? o.O
well, given that it’s Ruttech, it could be an entirely different material (e.g.

OK, Mary. But who cares what she thinks?
God. God cares what Mary thinks, because Mary is God’s perfect servant on this Earth.
Sinner.
Good response, lol
Turns out that Mary is indeed Jesus 2.0 coming back to earth to judge us. PLOT TWIST!
I think you just described the ending of Far Cry 5

Soon all the girls in this wing will have jackets with Carla’s last name on them!
Skill with trap design and an army of uniformed minions. All Carla needs is the volcano lair.
well their dorm is like a lair…and Ruth is like a volcano, always looking like she’s ready to blow…so why not call their dorm a volcano lair? 😀
There is a Murder Cave on the floor so thats a plus.
I mean a volcano lair is exactly the sort of place you’d expect a volcano to live in.
This is probably another plan to piss off Mary.
Therefore, I approve.
That’s just a fringe benefit, it’s also good advertising and looks cool as well
And then the jackets go all ‘Little Diablo’ on ’em.
More Carla and Lucy, please
This page is everything I didn’t know I needed in my life for 2019.
I didn’t know I wanted to see more of them together until I read today’s strip.
Well according to @damnyouwillis on Twitter in about 3 years your wish will come true.
what IS Mary a fan of, besides herself??
She’s a fan of her boyfriend, but I mean, he’s basically just male her, so that really doesn’t change much.
I guess she’s a fan of being almost nude in her room in the afternoon, judging by that one gag ages ago.
being a holier-than-thou Christian?
She seems to be a big fan of self righteousness and spite.
Electric guitars at church/
pride, wrath, envy, and lust? Being a hypocrite who lives to spout of hatred towards others?
Right wing politics?
Satan? (Or as she calls him, God.)
Given her drawing style, some anime, I guess.
Christian anime of course.
Jesus?
The good Lord?
i thought about all the answers, and all i can conclude is that all of those are just herself. all those qualities like being a hypocrite etc are her. even jesus/god/satan (lol btw) are just HER ideas of god/jesus, so she can perpetuate her beliefs and personaily. ik most ppl do that to an extent, but mary, that seems to be all she is (ik irl ppl like that too 🙁 ) can you tell what a huge fan i am of her? lolol
Aww, girls being friends
Gals being pals
I love this strip. And Lucy is correct, that IS a great looking jacket.
Overeager drones? What will we be told next, that they’re sentient?
Sure. Why not?
Only if this storyline was co-written with the aid of Jeph Jaques.
Aren’t they the same universe though? No, wait. It’s an AU, right? Didn’t we see AU Faye on move-in day? (or maybe it was Parent’s weekend?)
Okay, so Singularikitty is the offspring of Choo-Choo bear from Something Positive and Sprinkles from Girls With Sling Shots. If A=B and B=C then A=C
And Dina’s paid a visit to the coffee shop.
She’s also paid a visit to Girl Genius’s England, so…
No kidding?
Girl Genius’s <a href="“>strip from Halloween featured a Spark-y version of Dina.
Oops…not sure how I borked that HTML…but you know where to look, now.
A steampunk Dina?
Make it so, Willis.
Faye has a tag in DoA. More to the point, Dina has a Coffee of Doom t-shirt.
It has to be an AU, though, because in DoA, Faye’s Dad is still alive.
Even if the prime QC/Something Positive/Girls with Slingshots universe crossed over with the Dumbiverse, those comics would have to take place several years in DoA’s future. Am I the only one who saw that Mythbusters episode where an industrial drone’s rotor blades slit a dummy’s simulated jugular vein?
As drones get more ubiquitous, both the injuries and the lawsuits will get likewise.
I will note that the Ruttech drone’s blades have no safety guard, and it is flying in a fairly confined area.
Do you also remember just how over-the-top the drone was that actually slit the dummy’s throat? Damn thing had rotors like a V-22 Osprey.
Considering what Rutech’s analogue gets up to in Shortpacked! and Carla describing them as “overeager”… I wouldn’t be surprised if that drone has an onboard AI capable of collision avoidance… and if you tick it off enough, you wake up in nearby forest. Why is Droney not tagged??
I name it, Droney McDroneface
Attention Lover meets Attention Giver.
Well, this can only crash and burn from here.
*plays Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” on the hacked Muzak*
I have some great ideas regarding Mary and drones, inspired by the FoxTrot strip where the little nerd got a weird haircut from a drone accident.
Perhaps Lucy can show up back at her dorm in the jacket and suddenly be the cool one.
Then she can give jackets to everyone and destabilize “cool” as a currency.
Let’s have more Lucy and Carla interactions por favor.
Hard agree.
Hey, check it, pretty soon Sal won’t have to worry about her being boxed in or shit, Carla is gonna give a copy of her jacket to everyone on the floor. except Mary.
I feel like Carla would probably give Mary one, or several, just to piss her off.
Honestly I’m leaning towards eveyonw getting one but Mary. She just walks out into a sea of rutten jackets
Specifically, everyone in Mary’s church. She walks in on Sunday and there’s just Rutten Jackets everywhere.
(Wouldn’t most people in Mary’s church likely be transphobes? Sure, but it’s a pretty sweet jacket.)
Now that’s how you dunk on Mary!
Also also, it is a pretty sweet jacket.
It would be kind of hard to hide, wouldn’t it? If the Ruttens were originally known to have a son and then had a daughter. At a certain level of wealthy, it’s hard to keep things private.
I got the impression that Carla is aware there is gossip about her online.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2018/comic/book-9-comic/01-flyin-to-the-red/storytimeintensifies/
Yeah, I hadn’t really thought about it before and I don’t recall it being brought up here, but somehow “the Ruttech daughter” brought it home to me. Even without “gossip” and reddit crap, the lives of people at that level are sufficiently well documented that they can’t keep it quiet. However, it’s a big church and she could have been in a different part of it. I just wouldn’t be surprised if she found a place with people with similar views.
She was there with Ethan once – she was giving Joyce the stink eye.
So she was!
Whoops, did that wrong. I’ll just…leave this…here…
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2012/comic/book-2/06-strange-beerfellows/superexcited/
To be fair, I think she’d give Jesus the stink eye for being a filthy liberal hippie
Carla jackets for everyone!
Someone being nice to Lucy! Thank u!
It’s OK, she has yet to meet Joyce.
This is what Tony Stark would be if he was a young transgender woman that was intro roller blades.
Some versions of the Iron Man armour in the comics have had jet powered roller skates.
And a pink feather boa.
Yeah, that was back in Tony’s drinking days.
Tony Stark truly is the role Robert Downey Jr. was born to play.
The “catapult suit” that Carla was talking about building way back when was actually a code name for her Mk1 power armor suit.
Geez, Carla, you’re STILL wearing that jacket? You know you’re not matching Sal anymore right? 😛
I know, I know, narcissism, I’m just never passing up a chance to make a crack at how badly she wanted to match with Sal.
And hey, don’t knock it, Carla, warehouse delivery drones need to exercise too! They don’t have skates like you do.
Lucy is forever adorable, but we all knew that.
She matches the memory of Sal wearing that jacket.
Carla, your lesbian side is showing. 😛
I wonder if Lucy would have said the same thing if she’d bumped into Sal wearing her jacket or if she did actually have a little more to go on about “the Ruttech daughter”.
Also, thank you Willis for allowing Linkara to write the beginning of your book!
That is what he is most known for, after all.
How is Carla still alive with the drones going up and down the hallway? I think half the girls would’ve murdered her for the noise they make. xD
Clearly those drones are her armada that protect her from any attempted murders.
They’re super-advanced hover drones that make very little noise. They even sneak up on people sometimes.
I’m pretty sure the drones make less noise than Carla herself.
There are apparently super high tech silent drones. If they’re anything like Carla, I wouldn’t put it past her parents to build and use those just because they can.
Only Mary, and she knows better now. Nobody else cares about a little noise in the hall.
Besides, whenever anyone gets angry, the drones give them a nice jacket. 🙂
“Now do I get a drone WITH my jacket or is that extra?”
That would be a sweet deal.
I initially misinterpreted this as a drone wearing a tiny little jacket and now I want to see one like this so much.
I see no reason why Carla wouldn’t put that together.
I can see them lowkey being bffs eventually. Maybe.
Okay, NOW Carla being a jerk is getting on my nerves
I mean she was a jerk yesterday, totally, but how is she being one here?
Just seems like she’s flaunting her wealth as though it makes her better than everyone else, especially in the first panel
How? She’s giving Lucy a sweet jacket that probably costs $100-$200 for free.
Carla:” I’m a narcissistic conceited asshole and not only do I know that but I Revel in it.”
Well I got give her this she really knows how to embrace inner jerk.
do they come in 2XL
Who would say no to a drone jacket.
The drones keep dropping things on Mary. Things that make a juicy plop. Or, a sticky plop.
Excellent. Now have Lucy meet Walky and Joyce and I’m set.
Lucy has already met Walky, though
Hey, if Amber and Walky do fall through over her stabbing his sister, maybe Lucy/Walky has a chance!
Take the jacket, Lucy- you’ll be part of the family!
What family? That depends on how many people take the jackets!
I’m trying to remember their Walkyverse relationship and drawing a blank. All I can remember is the moment between Schtick Shift and Lucy at the very end.
I can’t imagine they were very close other than that.
Malaya and Ultra Car used to prank Lucy for fun.
god i had totally forgotten about that
Mary already has five jackets, and gets a new one every time she tries to throw them out.
Willis is just trying to make drawing these easier by transitioning everyone to the same wardrobe.
It’s free advertising!
Also, does anyone else feel a bit wary about the casual access to what’s implied to be several drones at once?
Maybe I’ve just been rereading it too much, but this feels like a strip straight out of Questionable Content.
Oh? I like where this is going, they could both use some friendship ^^
Carla is adorable and I know she’s an asshole but I will fight anyone who dares to dishonest her and she’ll probably mock me because I will lose.
*dishonor
In which Carla confesses how random her life has become of late.
I love how Carla actually is a bit taken aback in two panels… but then jumps right back.
I got the impression that Carla was a bit nervous asking a relative stranger for what is essentially a big favour: Can Lucy help her dad clear space in their warehouses? Every little helps!
“Please, take one. The drones just keep coming“
CALLED IT!

That is possibly one of the best calls I’ve ever seen.
*Bows* Why, thank you, your majesty. It sure beats my prediction of “Becky will ask Joyce to follow her to Anderson’s”
It’s already a hot fashion item when drones deliver them.
Hey, it’s a free turtleneck jacket, what person would say no?
Sal almost certainly, even if only on the grounds of self-aware irony. Mary, as Willis correctly mentions in the Alt Text, would regard them as the Vestments of Sin.
Eat the rich.
I already get all my junk food allowance from McDonald’s.
The poor are tough and stringy.
Isn’t that basically the plot of the Time Machine?
No don’t do that. They taste blech-y.
While most of Dumbing of Age takes place in a perpetual “this year”, it seems Carla’s a few years in the future.
No, Willis is just establishing Ruttech as the ‘Uber-Tech’ organisation that lets him justify any arbitrarily advanced gadgets he needs in future as being ‘something Carla got from her dad’.
And of course, when we re-read this strip in five years it will be like, next week in universe, and this tech will seem perfectly mundane.
Does it come in XL? Asking for a friend.
Interesting. Carla’s used to hostility; non-unfriendly directness can faze her at least momentarily.
It’s a known flaw in her armour.

She seems to be learning how to handle it.
Ultra Car felt the need to display their sexual prowess to Lucy once in a bizarre form of one-upmanship. I wonder how Carla will relate to Lucy, going forwards?
Maybe Mary is scared of deus ex machina?
I think this could be a mutually beneficial friendship.
Maybe it’s because Joyce was just talking about the importance of the crash-into Meet Cute a little while ago, but I’m kinda feeling this as a ship.
I’m down
Free swag! Clearly this is the best dorm.
Sure, who wants to live in the dorm where everyone is friendly and happy and eat cheese together anyway?
And watch MST3K/Rifftrax together? Bah, humbugs!
And won’t leave you alone and nag you into participating even when you’re anti-social.
I’d like to know someone there and go visit them when I want, then go back to my dorm where I can occasionally be left alone.
It’s like a dorm with nothing but Joyces – no-one has any respect for other people’s boundaries.
And everyone is always happy, forever, and ever, and ever
New Best Friends
My two fave girls in a strip together is the best way to start a year!
I now firmly believe that the drone is fully sentient and just super eager to give out those jackets to as many people as possible.
One of those drones hit Spider-Man on the way
By the way, the chapter title indicates that this chapter needs this song as its soundtrack!
Heck, I just made an entire twitter thread about A-ha, because fuck yeah!
Good stuff. And I say that as an American who bought three of their LPs when released.
Carla is narcissistic but only because she’s the best
Here we have a say that translated “gifted even stabbings!” but a free cool looking jacket is always a good thing.
