Waiting for the context link…
This one?
Nine years, eleven months, holy shit.
But the comic moves slower so we’re like in the second half of the same school year.
Willis out here plotting like Eiichiro Oda
A mere 119 months ago.
Ahh. Yes, that did help. Thanks!
… did… did Becky’s estimate just call the date of this comic?
Becky: “Twenty four, twenty five?”
Today 4 / 2 / 25
*Mind Blown*
Bloody freedom formats. Give me ISO8601 or give me death!
2.4.(20)25 is very much a non-“Freedom” format. Murica considers that February, unlike Europe/elsewhere where that’s 2 April.
But yes, YYYYMMDD all the things!
Maybe Willis stealth-edited it.
Also, inferior date format, get out.
Nope. That’s what it said when it was first posted. I used to keep a timeline with strip summaries, and my description of that strip was, “Dorothy is a Kinsey 0, Becky is like 24, 25”.
ANd now it’s back.
*makes Twilight Zone noises*
Bisexual capital indeed, talk about foreshadowin
Sure:
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-5/03-the-butterflies-fly-away/kinsey/
2015?!Damn, no wonder I had no idea what the context for this was.
Dorothy had estimated herself to be near 0 on the Kinsey Scale, which is to say, quite straight, when talking to Danny about his budding bisexuality.
Not all heroes wear capes.
TY
Aw what the fuck, it’s been over ten years since Becky came out?!
Man, time flies. And Willis’ lettering gets markedly better (not that I ever thought it was bad at the time, but clear improvement).
I’m pretty sure all of DoA has used the two fonts that Willis had made from his handwriting. It looks to me like the first font was used through Book 5, and he switched to the second, neater-looking font starting with Book 6 and this strip, https://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-6/01-to-those-whod-ground-me/wakeupcall/
It’s in the thread below this, but I guess it can’t hurt to add it here as well: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-5/03-the-butterflies-fly-away/kinsey/
Thank you!
Wow, Dorothy’s design has changed since then…
Thank you!
wait a damn minute – that was ten years ago?!!!!
… what happened to the other comments here?
There was like a whole other section in which I commented on how Becky called the date of this comic, but the entire thing is gone now.
Did an entire comment tree get Modded? And, if so, why? At least when I posted, it was just a link to the comic being referenced.
Yeah, my reply to this– which was just linking the comic, and was the second reply at 12:03am to do so– is now showing up for me as “awaiting moderation.” My guess is that too many people hit report, possibly while trying to click the link these comments offered.
That thing needs a confirmation step.
Or at least some distance from the Reply button. Right-align that shit.
Now it’s all restored and we look like fools.
My comment from 12:03 is now marked “awaiting moderation” on the machine I posted it from, and it and the entire comments branch below it are hidden on other machines. I can still see and even reply to the hidden comments from the machine where I made the original comment. I posted a reply to Bodmans after the branch was disappeared, but it doesn’t show up on other machines either.
Ah. Weird. Thanks yall!
I’m a little sad that my comment about Becky: 24, 25 with the brick joke occurring on the 2nd of April (4), 2025 ending up in the twilight zone. I thought that was pretty neat, and no one else seemed to be mentioning it.
i’m guessing joe told danny about the selfie? which is a little awkward but feels like shouldn’t be danny’s business even as an ex unless he just saw her and joyce together look closer than usual
Danny’s been reading DoA?
And, more specifically, the comments, which have referenced the strip in question several times since this storyline started.
Yes (Also he bought NSFW Patreon right after Joe’s pics got launched)
DoA is his post college syndicated comic, its all flashbacks. Joyce is livid that he’s in comics even though her Leia Croft Expy is being made into a movie.
It all ends with Mike in a mental institution shaking a snow globe.
the snow globe is full of dimes, and the milfs they rode out on
Got that bi-dar
Someone please explain to me what this means
Dorothy had estimated herself to be near 0 on the Kinsey Scale, which is to say, quite straight, when talking to Danny about his budding bisexuality, something that is now a challenged perception.
Dorothy is realizing she’s not as straight as she once thought, and Danny is one of the local bisexuality experts.
An expert in flirting with being a disaster bisexual
I would assess Danny as being a rather calm and levelheaded bisexual, personally.
Danny seems to be one of the least “disaster” characters in this iteration of the Walkyverse, actually.
Which makes me think: is there such a thing as a Disaster scale? Because I feel like that’d be way more useful and informative than the Kinsey scale where the DoA cast is concerned.
He’s doing great now, but he sure Dann’d things up with Ethan.
I love the idea of a Disaster Scale. But what should it go to?
It should be open-ended. There’s always a worse possible disaster.
Which is kind of hilarious, given that the strip referred to was Dotty explaining to Danny that bisexuality was even a thing. He’s come a long way.
When they talked about Danny bisexuality Dorothy said she was fully straight but that it might be subject to change. It seems she wasn’t as ready to accept that possibility as she thought.
It’s a callback joke to Dorothy and Danny’s conversation from when he was realizing that he was Bi
Jesus Christ that was ten years ago. How do people remember this. How has it been that long
It helps that i’ve read it more recently than ten years ago
But also I probably have brain problems
Why bother recalling what you had for breakfast yesterday? Or what the names are of those people you’ve met this week? You could be using those brain cells for _more_ webcomic goodness!
Your argument is convincing.
I legit got tired of getting facts wrong in this comic so I went back to the beginning and read it all again recently. It helps to remember stuff like this, or when Joyce swore and Joe handed her a $20, because Willis loves himself a brick joke.
The whole dang thing? How long did that take? Three weeks?
As of today, there are 5472 posts by Willis, including comics and posts for patreon and other special events, thus establishing an upper limit for the number of strips
assuming each strip takes at the very most a minute to read, that’s at the most 90 hours of total read time, or ~4 days total time taken
you can just skip the Jason ones. He’s terrible.
A minute per strip is a pretty high estimate too.
Frequent rereads and autism. I can’t remember most of my family birthdays but I sure can recall specific plot point in a thousand strip long comic!
I don’t do much in the way of rereads, but some points– like this one– do come up in the comment section with some regularity, which helps. But yeah, the autism is doing a lot, too.
This moment comes up a lot in discussion too. Basically every time Joyce and Dorothy are together lately. A few DoA highlights are constantly in rotation.
It’s so funny you say that cuz after I commented I was like “well this comic does have a big autistic following so”
Because it’s been mentioned and referenced many times in the comments since this storyline began.
I actually have that specific strip open in a tab because I’ve had to quote it at people who were mis-citing it to “prove” that Dorothy is definitely totally always and forever 100% straight no takebacks so many times lately.
for reals?!?!
such a weird fucking hill to die on 9-9
Anyway, if she had claimed to be “definitely totally always and forever 100% straight no takebacks”, how would that prove she hadn’t been mistaken? See also the self-described
normalstraight Jennifer “you’re allowed to bang, like, once” Billingsworth.I may be one of those people, since I’ve often said I’d take a claim like Dorothy’s more seriously than someone saying they were “definitely totally always and forever 100% straight no takebacks”
Yeah, but at least they’re dead.
A week or so ago, I watched about two seconds of the opening credits for the second Charlie’s Angels movie and immediately recognized it. I hadn’t seen it in at least a decade, there weren’t any characters on screen at all, let alone named characters, and I didn’t recognize any names in the credits themselves. Just two seconds of a close-up of a dirty bar with some background noise and I was like “Oh yeah, Charlie’s Angels, I like that movie.”
On the other hand, I have autism-brain that’s fixated on media and pop culture, and have trouble with most things outside of those areas. So I’m pretty far from the norm.
Danny gonna pull a “get on my level” bit ain’t he? XD
Clearly Dorothy need to get a newsboy hat and start playing WAP in the ukelele.
I mean, he’s finally got something he’s better at, let him enjoy the moment.
Be hilarious if Dorothy’s competitive nature takes over and she just HAS to accept the challenge.
Look, she’s bi now, right? So she should embrace it, go for it, and get really bi. With spreadsheets, sticky notes, and google calendar.
I know that without my spreadsheets and calendar I’d struggle to get bi
Really sticky notes, if she’s doing it properly
Shlicky notes.
Nothing about spreadsheets? Spread? Sheets? Oh c’mon people.
Jeez, when’d Danny get perceptive
He’s perceptive, but it’s more than just this strip.
He was at karaoke. and then maybe he noticed Dorothy around Joyce at Dina’s party. Maybe he saw the photos from the bar from either Joe or Sal. Those are all from the past week. And Joe may have given it away, if he was chatting with Danny about his suspicions, even if he was trying to be subtle about it.
He went from clueless to perceptive when he took up the ukulele. OTH correlation is not causation.
To late, quoting you in my paper as saying that ukuleles cause perceptiveness and also bisexuality, probably. It’s been accepted by the Breitbart scientific committee already.
YOU FOOL! It was the hat, not the Uke! Do you have any idea what the consequences of your fallacious paper will be?
… Because I sure hell don’t.
N’aw, the hat’s a little straight.
Oh no, it was definitely the uke. Wait, does that make Danny the seme?
No, Danny’s one of the few characters who wasn’t SEMME.
He’s very specifically talented at recognizing when other people are (however briefly) feeling just as pathetic and awkward as he is! And then commiserating over it with them. It worked on Joe, it worked on Amber, and now it seems it’s about to work on Dorothy. It’s actually a very useful skill, if you think about it.
He’s TOO empathetic sometimes
Asking the bisexuality professional, are ya
God I love sassy Danny. What a fucking callback, goddamn.
Danny has been holding onto this one for a WHILE.
Ten years, apparently.
Three to four months, his time. Nearly ten years, our time.
He saw that “dranks” post.
There are secrets here, but no mysteries.
His bidar has grown more powerful than the last time you met, Dorothy.
Yeah, no.
You will accept blowjob cat as your lord and savior!
I do but not as my gravitar!
Is Danny the bisexual expert now? What happened to that one guy? I don’t remember his name he was super forgettable.
That would be Danny at least if you ask Joyce.
Wait, since when was Ryu the bisexual expert?
“yeah man, classic bi” Drew! truly in the running for one of DOA’s more nothingburger periphery characters so far.
( also admittedly a slightly more interesting guy in shortpacked! but only because of his right turn into hardcore monologuing pettiness in the second half of his character lifespan )
(( also also one day i’ll get links to fucking work for me, dammnit !! ))
I think mostly he’s just not a character who Dumbing of Age had any use for. His original niche of Ethan’s jerk boyfriend could be filled by Mike, who was much better at it
Who the fuck is Drew? I remember friggin’ Tyler, who matters so little that his only line is about everyone forgetting him, but I’ve never heard of such an entity as a “Drew”.
So you, uh, drew a blank on that one I guess
Something something draw pistols at dawn more like
:O
I genuinely don’t know who are you referring to.
Here you go: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2019/comic/book-10/01-birthday-pursuit/grumpy/
I suppose there aren’t that many reasons she would specifically seek out Danny
Danny’s been waiting for this moment ever since she made the original estimate.
I love that he can tell by the tenor of this visit what the subject would be. It makes sense, as the two DO talk, but probably not daily or anything, and she’s seemingly flustered. It’s going to be something she’d feel she had to come to him for, with that kind of context.
I dunno, in Danny’s place seeing her so flustered her previous attraction to Danny himself might have been more prominent than a question about her sexuality?
I feel like both of them are pretty comfortable with anything between them on that front being past-tense.
“Yeah, did you see that girl in the last strip? I’m totally bi now. I’m heading out to seduce her.”
“I’ll join you.”
“Don’t you already have a girlfriend?”
“I will be there for moral support! I got the sense that you need it.”
“… Yeah that’s fair.”
“Also, I’d normally be against cheating, but it’s Walky
so f*ck it.”
No, that’s a different comic.
Yes, Joyce was in the last strip, indeed.
Dorothy is going to go seduce Alice?
Please please please please please
Danny somehow knows why Dorothy stopped bi.
I applaud you. Have an internet point.
oh, very nice. *golf clap*
Dammit. That was a clever pun.
So what’s the story with the alt-text, though? Who’s an egg? And why?
Danny is the egg. Multiple eggs likely. Most important of which is usually a good one.
Danny is a good egg.
There was a joke back in the old comics where Danny wanted people to say that he was a “good egg”. So that’s a callback like a decade further than the main punchline.
Long-running in-joke across both continuities.
I want to be villainous and accuse Danny of buying silicone eggs online to shove up his ass and let them melt, but I’m tired as fuck and can’t get it to work in a clever way, and I also heard about that behavior on a Let’s Play, from a guy who frequently says normal things in deliberately strange ways, so it might not even be real in the first place. Please don’t think about Danny melting rubber eggs in his ass.
Hmmmm….🫠
Oi, cut it out!
You can put silicone in the oven and it won’t melt. The stuff’s great for cookware! Freezer, oven and microwave safe, dishwasher safe, non-stick…
Look, I don’t know what the exact material is that people are allegedly using for this alleged behavior. It’s not really the important part.
A-ha! Thank youse!
I’m celebrating her talking to him like I hoped she would. But looking at it was a pretty obvious outcome.
This isn’t even a brick joke this is a building which has been built, had a long life, and then slowly became dilapidated over the centuries joke.
WOW.
Kinda feel like this is also a callback when Dorothy decided Danny’s bangst was outside of her cishet experience.
Long-running in-joke across both continuities.
Dammit that was supposed to be a reply
Darling, it’s written all in the wall…
A Joke that is 9 years and 11 months old to the day, but the real question is how much time has passed in the actual comic universe? My guess is maybe around 6 months tops, but I could be wrong.
Closer to three-ish which is still a hell of a brick to drop on someone
God damn that is some payoff, that’s on par with the “four white mages” joke in terms of brick jokes in webcomics. Also it makes sense Dorothy would seek a convo with Danny about this. Ho boy, this is gonna be awkward though…
Ya’ll think Danny is actually a Hoosiers fan or is ya boy just bandwagoning cause they were actually kinda good for the first time in I don’t know…ever? Tony really earned it. If it wasn’t clear I’m talking about the football team.
I believe they also have a basketball team.
It’s also just… the whole university they attend. Wearing college apparel from the school you go to is so incredibly normal, whether it had anything to do with sports or not… like, thinking it would be “bandwagoning” just to wear a hoodie of your college is much odder.
that too, but I went for the joke.
I mean wearing IU hoodies has kinda been Danny’s thing since 1997.
…although the art back then kinda made the logo look like an āī-generated image of a menorah.
Danny often wears an IU hoodie because I routinely wore one as a child and considered it my Standard Cartoon Character Everyday Outfit, like Charlie Brown’s yellow striped shirt.
Now these are the bisexuals I was waiting for.
“Some zero” was both what he and I were thinking back then so I’m glad this is the person she’s going to
Yeah that always felt like some foreshadowing to me ^^;
Goddamn, few months after realizing he’s bi and he gets a super gaydar
“Let’s be honest, other than Joe and Sal nobody else talks to me unless they have to. Can’t imagine why.”
“Are still playing the-”
“I am still playing the ukelele, yes, I don’t see what that has to do with anything.”
The healing can’t begin until he puts that thing down.
Dorothy’s disruptively adorable in Panel 4. She’s so goddamn cute, it’s actually upsetting.
Omg??? Did we find something Danny is GOOD at??
he’s also good at bein’ an egg
Wow that is a nearly 10 year callback
Didn’t expect the reference to a strip almost 10 years ago. Danny’s gotten pretty good bi-dar after realizing he’s bi only a short while ago in-universe.
Estimate? I’m just here to borrow your shoes.
Sardonic eggs? In this economy?!
From Sardinia, I think
(My name is Milo Minderbender, I am 27 years old)
The whole point of all of DoA up to now was this strip. Enjoy it Danny, you deserve this.
Callback!
Ah, the Bisexual Knowing Eyebrow at someone coming to have the Talk.
Ah, that’s the callback. Thanks!
i would say ‘give danny a bf too’ but sal did say she doesn’t do throuples lol
Danny’s Rorshach moment, “And then Dorothy will come to me, begging for me to save her from her girlcrush on her bestie that makes her a cheater and I shall go….no.”
Who will Dorothy the Dorothies?
What a shock, trying to bury her feelings in Wally’s abs was less than fully successful.
I do wonder how much time has elapsed since Walky dropped trou… and whether or not he and Dorothy have talked at all since. It’s possible they did, of course, and that the conversation was just very uneventful, but I gotta figure that if Dorothy actually told Walky about her feelings in any detail, it would be something Willis wanted to show us on-panel.
So, placing bets here — no conversation at all? Coitus continued and completed successfully with so little fanfare that it wasn’t worth putting down on paper?
Or are we going to get some flashback panels here showing at least the highlights?
(I’ll reiterate here that Dorothy and Walky should have a conversation. Honestly, they should have a conversation just to get on the same page about this relationship bc Walky keeps looking unhappy when she talks about it, and she hasn’t noticed yet.) (So I’m gonna “boo” softly if Dorothy came here without talking to Walky at all.)
(But on the other hand coming out is big and spooky, and I do sympathize with her being distracted by those feelings.)
We know there was ”extra noisy apology sex”. I suspect Dotty wasn’t ready to tell Walky what it was about. It’s not like she quite understands it herself either, hence needing to talk to Danny.
Oh sure.
I wouldn’t really be surprised if Dorothy hadn’t managed to tell him what the apology was for — she made an attempt, however clumsily, when he showed up… — but I do feel obligated to softly boo.
Is she a Kinsey 1, or does she feel more inclined to identify as a Kinsey 2—the fancy version of bi?
It’s Dorothy. She’s going to calculate to at least 2 decimals. She’s a Kinsey 2.15 or such.
She’s a Kinsey HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
THE EGG RETURNS
what a THROWBACK, danny. that’s something i’d expect US to joke about, how did YOU clock her right away?
I suppose he’s been at the exact place Dotty is in right now.
Banging a Walkerton to make the gay feelings go away?
Funny, but not exactly. I meant having to face gay feelings towards a same sex friend.
I will hijack this comment section to celebrate deltarune release date announcement! Who else here is excited for it?
Is that thing still not finished?
Chapter 3 and 4 will be released on June 5. I am really hyped.
I’m not even reading any comments first, I’m just here to say I think it’s wonderful that Dorothy went to Danny about this. A lot of people would fight and deny this aspect of themselves for years, Dorothy started self-examining quick for someone of her age.
Oh dear, no thanks Jason, I just forgot what capitalization I used before.
If Walky and Dorothy get married, and Sal and Danny get married, Dorothy and Danny would be siblings in law. Hahahaha. Or something. OUROBOROS.
Their entire group is one big dysfunctional polycule. They just don’t know it yet.
Way to play it cool, Dorothy.
Then again… Pobody’s Nerfect
Also, while Danny immediately smelling the Bi Crisis is ofc very FUNNY from an audience perspective, I think it makes total sense for these characters.
I mean, look at how Willis draws Dorothy in each panel. Look at how many panels there are, and how they vary in width, and how both of the extra-narrow panels frame Dorothy’s discomfort. Willis is telegraphing Dorothy’s anxiety in a really great way that takes just… full advantage of the medium.
(If Dorothy were any more coming apart at the seams, I might expect us to get some half-height panels, too, for like a total of eight instead of the six we’ve got here!)
So, consider this from Danny’s pov. He opens his dorm room door to a sudden Dorothy, and… all she says to him is his name.
From some characters this would be unhelpful, the opposite of diagnostic, but from Dorothy? She responds to your greeting with nothing but your name and these hollow, increasingly plaintive eyes. You realize that she’s about three seconds from just blurting out, “Well! It was good to see you, ‘bye!”
All of this is massively out of character for your ex-girlfriend. You’ve never known her to start anything without a plan. Even if what she had to say to you was going to be somehow emotionally difficult for you, you can’t imagine her coming here without having rehearsed it in her head at least a few times. Heck, even if it was going to be emotionally difficult for Dorothy.
And then there’s the part where she’s here, seeking you out.
You and Dorothy don’t have a bad relationship at this point, just… a very cordial one. You’ve known each other since high school, but you’ve also both changed a lot since then. You’re friendly, but not the closest of friends. You know that you, personally, would be more likely at this point to go to Sal or even Joe with any problems you were having, and Dorothy… she’s dating Walky again, isn’t she? And she and Joyce are close, although now that you think of it, you realize the last time you actually saw her go to anyone for help, it was Ruth and Jennifer for some reason…………
So Dorothy is on your doorstep, she’s the type of anxious and speechless that usually come before she’s researched a topic enough to have come up with a plan, and…
Hm. If Dorothy has come to you as part of that initial research phase, then she must be here for something she thinks you’re somehow a subject matter expert on………….
OH RIGHT, about four months ago, she helped you come out as bi
Also can I just say I love the tiny punctuationless “what”s. Here, have another callback, though only from 2023.
You know what’s great about Danny in the Walkyverse. I mean besides everything, he’s really the best. But when you look at the last ItsWalky strip, Danny and Howard both have goatees that make them look like Blaine, and Blaine didn’t even have a goatee. Danny kneeling on Ruth’s grave looking like Blaine and Howard looking like Blaine standing behind him, trying not to think “I wish it had been you”.
I’m getting a little extra satisfaction that Amazigirl’s ”A friend of Dorothy’s huh?” line is paying off years later.
