Yeah, Carla’s many emotional issues – extreme narcissism arising from crippling insecurity, a desperate need for attention, a fondness for warping reality with obvious falsehoods, etc. would be kind of endearing. However, given her frightful intellect and the fact she is set to inherit both vast wealth and control over major sources of public information instead make these defects terrifying, especially in the light of some recent examples of those with similar assets and qualities.
Fortunately she is both young and fictional, so we may laugh and draw joy from her foibles. Thus is mighty power of satire and Hiveworks webcomics.
I think they were missing the word “the” before mighty, the sentence works if you mentally add it “Thus is the mighty power of satire and Hiveworks webcomics”, with “thus” referencing back to the previous sentence “so we may laugh and draw joy from her foibles.” It’s not the most common use of “thus” so I can see it causing confusion, and it does come across as kind of awkward phrasing, especially with the missing article, but it technically works.
Or, less snarkily: The letters “i” and “u” are right next to each other on most standard keyboard layouts. And, as noted, the word “the” was dropped. Thus, the sentence should probably read as: “This is the mighty power (&c)”
I had considered that possibility, but I actually think “thus” works better in-context than “this” would, considering the joking attempt at overly grandiose speech going on there.
It’s almost as if private ownership of publicly available services is something we inherited from the feudal period instead of something that is actually conductive to good and efficient service and administration. Not that we quite figured out how to deal with alternatives either, just stating that we are dealt a pretty rough hand at this time in history.
well, charlie seems calm/fine with dating carla, so other than any insecurities hidden by posturing i don’t think it’d get too unhealthy compared to ruth/billiefer
I think it’s consistent enough for a daily comic (tho it’d be interesting if it was set at diff intervals versus the same time each day), i’m more of a manga reader overall so could be worse/at least there’s not like a 3 month hiatus/random disappearance or so
I think I was so used to it uploading later I wouldnt check til like 12:25 my time bc it just seemed to get later, so i was surprised when this page refreshed when i was clicking thru tabs lol
I’m… pretty sure they live in a different building? Although I can’t actually remember why I think that, so it’s possible my brain is just making things up.
I got the vibes from the story that they were farther away, but Raidah was eating in Read without a coat, but in the next strip she’s gone to Forest and has one.
Plus during the Do List story, Char is in the Read ground floor lobby with one of Joe’s so-sorry-donuts.
It probably does match the RL Curry, but other things about DoA Read Hall don’t match RL, so shrug-emoji.
Ditto. At this point I’m beginning to wonder if Charlie might have some form of dissociative disorder (not quite DID, but something more related to dissociating). This is more than just typical ADHD forgetfulness. I definitely get the forgetfulness, I’ll go into my kitchen, forget what I was looking for, go back to my room, and spontaneously remember what I wanted. Or I’ll forget a couple things from the grocery store.
But this straight up forgetting where she is in the moment is… a bit more concerning.
Yeah she is disabled, we gather that by now. If she was able to get to college and go to classes and Booster doesn’t have to be over her all the time, we should assume she can manage well enough.
Does she, though? We haven’t seen enough of her yet.
My AUDHD comes with a really bad memory, but like Doopyboop, I’m wondering if this isn’t more of a dissociative thing. As for Booster, it could also be they’re just using college to be more independent instead of, indeed, being all over her all the time.
I said we can assume because she should ha been here around the same time as the rest of the cast, maybe later we find out she actually struggles a lot in classes, we shall see, but so far she seems to be doing okay. And yes dissociative disorders are disabilities, that is what I was referring to.
We have seen her in class so at least she managed to get to some. She can’t possibly be as lost in a fog all the time as she seems here or she’d have flunked out by now. Presumably. I can’t imagine she’s wandering all around the campus and only eating or sleeping when Booster finds her to bring her something and drag her to her dorm room.”
Right now the idea of her having some sort of dissociative disorder seems based on the idea that she “forgot where she was”. Without further information it seems more likely to me that she tried to get from point A to point B, took a wrong turn at Albuquerque, and wound up at point C instead and didn’t realize that until someone told her. You don’t need a dissociative disorder to get lost. Especially if you have a poor attention span at start thinking about seahorses instead of paying attention to where you’re going.
+1, it kinda feels like dissociation. She doesn’t look terribly depressed or anything, but idk – I have several periods of my life I don’t remember because they were so bad my brain unplugged. It happens.
That, or anterograde amnesia.
It has to be more than ADHD, but since we don’t know enough, I’m more like deeply curious, I guess?
Speaking from experience, it can also be hyperfocus. Your focusing on something and your body is on autopilot and then you look around with no idea where you are or how you got there.
Speaking from experience too, that’s a way nicer option :’33 It’s possible! Every single time we’ve seen her so distracted, she’s been reading. Those rabbit holes and deep dives can truly be something. So in that case…
Yeah, every time I can recall Charlie has had the opportunity to explain being somewhere she didn’t intend to be, or accidentally ignoring someone within five feet of her, she’s said she was thinking really hard about a specific thing. Girl just thinks about stuff.
I have a variant of ADHD that makes me into the ultimate space cadet when unmedicated. We exist. Charlie is the first time I’ve ever seen someone like me (and my grandmother) in fiction. Maybe we’ve got ADHD and something else, I don’t know, but to everyone who’s like “this can’t just be ADHD”…as far as I know at this point, yes, it can.
I wonder if medication would help b/c doesn’t work for everyone but given she’s not come across anything dangerous and booster’s not fussing over her to where they feel like they can’t take their eyes off of her for more than ten minutes, i imagine she’s functioning well otherwise, i’d just be more worried about her showing 15 mins late to class each time unless it’s just automatic for her walking to class or so even if she’s a bit delayed or so
(maybe she’s looking at a ‘to do list’ on her phone or so)
I’m admittedly a fan of medication. After it took, uhm, some time to find the right one and all but yeaaah. It can save your life.
At this point it’s all conjecture, granted! Charlie is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. But as I commented upstairs, there’s a possibility Booster has had more of a caretaking role in the past and now they’re separate at college… They’re finally getting some time to themselves? I’ve seen it happen with siblings of different ND flavors.
I was just thinking curry wings sound tasty. BW3 used to have those back when I was in college. I’d go on 10 cent wing night, the curry ones were good, our little group would get a variety and we’d go through at least a couple hundred wings in a night.
I think they’re named Buffalo Wild Wings now, and 10 cent wing night ended decades ago. Maybe I’ll make some curry sauce (extra hot, of course), fill up the deep fryer, and go grab some wings from the discount chicken place.
Because I just looked them up. Those losers want over $15 for 10 wings now. Screw that.
LOL if there is a ‘curry’ wing that’d be a great chance for some local restaurant to sponsor and offer like a “10% student discount” to encourage them to eat that on the weekends
You know I’ve been thinking about this lately, and I think I’ve come to an interesting conclusion: Jennifer doesn’t have particularly bad intuition, or particularly good intuition. She’s also not a genius problem solver, or a completely unhelpful jerk! The key to understanding Jennifer is that she’s very good at understanding people only as long as they act like Jennifer, and she’s good at helping solve problems <only if it's a problem she's already solved for herself.
So like, she has a VERY good intuition when it comes to stealing boyfriends, casually hook ups, drinking, cheerleading, etc. But if you want to know, say, what Amazi-Girl’s real identity is, or how to have a meaningful romantic relationship with someone…yeah, maybe ask someone else.
Please don’t worry. So far, it feels like the deep need to be the smartest person in the room went entirely into one twin out of two – and it ain’t Charlie.
Carla’s the type of person to demand a discount after being PROVEN wrong isn’t she?
…Charlie’s gonna be set for life… once the both of them get some proper focus.
No, we don’t. So far we only know the third floors of Clarke and Beck wings here in Read Hall and an unspecified floor in one of the Forest Quad towers. Curry has never been mentioned so far (although I believe all four wings’ names were visible in the main hall in at least one strip)
Today I learned I was pathologizing someone’s behaviour as opposed to making a playful over-the-top comment about how Carla has a habit of going so over-the-top she defies reality while making me believe it.
Thank you for your comment. I only wanted to write a single sentence, but here’s a whole bunch more since that’s what we want.
That did not at all come across on the original comment, at least to me People say stuff like that seriously often enough that is easy to mix them. I recommend using a tone indicator in the future, at the very least to avoid awkward interactions like the one I am doing right now.
I’m not responsible for your tone through text and devoid of context. Feel however you want to feel about that but I stand by my original comment. Thanks though!
Sweet… But NO, Carla. You need to help Charlie overcome (or at least adapt to) this. Otherwise you’re setting someone up for a great deal more hardship later in life when they can’t cope with problems on their own.
As a person with a couple disabilities (comorbidity’ll get you every time) fuck that. I don’t want my partners to treat me like a project, they’re not my nurses, it’s not their job to help me “overcome” any part of my disabilities.
Charlie has a problem. She is not a child. It’s okay if her girlfriend is playful and supportive without worrying about fixing her.
I apparently found out that I care more deeply about Charlie as Neurodivergent representation that I anticipated. Felling some strong emotions about it.
So does Carla get to skate around the entire campus whenever she wants? I feel like that might be against the rules and she gets away with it, but also other people should take advantage of no one enforcing the safety violation. Someone bust out a skateboard!
Carla doubtless is able to do so via the “Air Bud” loophole; aka, “nowhere in the rulebook does it say that a student *can’t* rollerskate through the buildings.”
I can’t imagine that the people on Clark Wing, second floor, are too thrtilled about this.
I mean, we had impromptu bouts of floor-wide laser tag with fog machines hidden in a couple rooms for the purpose. We also set up poker tournaments in the elevators.
Skating in the halls seems low on the college-kids-fucking-around-o-meter.
I got a question about IU interior design. Are the halls color coded or unique to each building? Cause these halls are the same kind of olive green like Read hall, but Forrest hall is blue. Are those halls in the same building but have different colors? Or is Forrest in a different building all together and Read and Curry are in the same building and that’s why the halls look the same?
I’m sure the real campus has made changes that aren’t reflected in the comic, but the DoA version of IU Bloomington has to be somewhat “fixed” for visual continuity. We see blue halls, we know we’re in Forest Quad.
A big “remodel” (catch up to the changes made to the real campus) could happen over the time skip, but we can’t have fixed “known” locations constantly changing around the characters.
Is Willis racing to get a year ahead?
I love seeing how far he’s gotten.
Do we know how much time has passed in-universe? I get a bit thrown trying to work it out when I re-read from the start and think that’s its not been long at all. Then I see how far we’ve gone since the start!
Strip started in late August (early Sept?) of year x, and we’ve made it to late Jan / early Feb of year x+1. Guessing we’ll see Valentine’s Day sooner or later (maybe next year lol)
For a moment here, I wondered what brought Carla to Curry second floor. Then I remembered: it’s the mere existence of people who may not know how awesome she is.
“for novel definitions of ‘wrong'”
This won’t lead to toxic attitudes at all, nnnope
Yeah, Carla’s many emotional issues – extreme narcissism arising from crippling insecurity, a desperate need for attention, a fondness for warping reality with obvious falsehoods, etc. would be kind of endearing. I mean, the title of this arc is “Love Dares You To Change”
Don’t look at me. I’m still trying to figure out what Thus refers to in Survivor’s last sentence and why thus is mighty power.

Booster, is that you?

well, charlie seems calm/fine with dating carla, so other than any insecurities hidden by posturing i don’t think it’d get too unhealthy compared to ruth/billiefer
woah, the strip wasnt 15 minutes late today. im shocked
This got improved some time ago.
The server clock got reset maybe a month or two ago now?
I think it’s consistent enough for a daily comic (tho it’d be interesting if it was set at diff intervals versus the same time each day), i’m more of a manga reader overall so could be worse/at least there’s not like a 3 month hiatus/random disappearance or so

Charlie might be incorrect, but she is never wrong.
Dude. That’s creepy. You sound just like my dad.
Your dad talks about Charlie?
You never forget the first person who bit your finger.
Was that meme that long ago already?
Only like 17 years ago.
the other day i found out Bash.org memes were officially 20 years old and anyway my funeral is next tuesday because i am fully decomposed
Nah it can’t be that old, can it? That’s only the same age as Chocolate Rain.
Excuse me, I’m going to go rapidly age into a desiccated cadaver like that guy in Last Crusade who chose poorly…
Dad humor requires one hive mind. All Dads are plugged into the One Mind.
My father’s was”
“Rule #1: I am always right
Rule #2: If I am wrong, see Rule #1”
Carla thought she was wrong once, but discovered she was mistaken.
Kurt Godel has joined the chat.
They’re both perfect! As long as you dramatically change the meaning of the word in certain scenarios.
Charlie and Carla are never wrong. The world sometimes disagrees with them, but that’s clearly the world’s problem.
“The Guide is definitive. Reality is sometimes inaccurate.”
I checked the dictionary definition of “Perfect” and it’s just a picture of Carla and Charlie.
You fell for the bait. Cause now I can say perfect isn’t a word accurate or powerful enough to describe Carla and Charlie!
I must now exile myself in shams!
different wing/floor! Is this where Raidah, Char, and Chan live?
I’m… pretty sure they live in a different building? Although I can’t actually remember why I think that, so it’s possible my brain is just making things up.
Also Bloomingpedia, which I have just discovered the existence of, says that Curry is a mens’ wing so probably not.
I think they’re in Read?
I got the vibes from the story that they were farther away, but Raidah was eating in Read without a coat, but in the next strip she’s gone to Forest and has one.
Plus during the Do List story, Char is in the Read ground floor lobby with one of Joe’s so-sorry-donuts.
It probably does match the RL Curry, but other things about DoA Read Hall don’t match RL, so shrug-emoji.
For some reason, I thought Asma said which wing she lived in, and it wasn’t Clark, but I can’t find it.
Maybe Sayid lives in this wing then.
Can’t be: Curry is a men’s wing. Raidah lives either in Clark (not on third floor) or in Landes (the fourth wing)
A good foundation is so that make up is easier.
That pun was the highlight of my evening.
I love Charlie but I can’t help but also be worried as hell about her?
Ditto. At this point I’m beginning to wonder if Charlie might have some form of dissociative disorder (not quite DID, but something more related to dissociating). I’m sorry! Hadn’t parsed the tone right lsjgslkdf ^^;;; but that’s fully on me.
It’s cool.

Right there with you. [Offers hugs]

This is how I interpreted it. I’ve got a serious case of that myself. Was at its worst in my 20s and 30s. Less bothersome in my middle aged years.
Yeah, every time I can recall Charlie has had the opportunity to explain being somewhere she didn’t intend to be, or accidentally ignoring someone within five feet of her, she’s said she was thinking really hard about a specific thing. Girl just thinks about stuff.

At this point it’s all conjecture, granted! Charlie is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. But as I commented upstairs, there’s a possibility Booster has had more of a caretaking role in the past and now they’re separate at college… They’re finally getting some time to themselves? I’ve seen it happen with siblings of different ND flavors.
i think it wouldn’t go that way but imagine if she was completely “normal” and acted like this on purpose to troll ppl
She’s fine.
She’s okay, too.
Nifty you could even say.
That’s not into question :33
She’s never been wrong, though that’s to say nothing about how correct she is, either.
Which is 100%.
Listen to the goddess Charlie!
Pandering today, are we?
Curry Wing? Sounds yummy, could use some of that
I was just thinking curry wings sound tasty.
Screw that.
Charlie is somewhere between me and Ryoga from Ranma 1/2 as far as people go with absolutely dogshit navigation skills.
ughh
Carla.
LOL if there is a ‘curry’ wing that’d be a great chance for some local restaurant to sponsor and offer like a “10% student discount” to encourage them to eat that on the weekends
What a great gf she is
I suppose from a certain point of view being lost and being wrong are two very different things.
Carla has never been wrong in her life, and Jennifer just has great intuition.
I’ll have you know, Jennifer’s intuition is completely reliable.
I mean, it’s reliably wrong, but still reliable.
To quote Sarah “A wealth of helpful knowledge pertaining to terrible and horrific things”.
Or her own alpha bongo line about sneaking her cheerleaders to get abortions and scoping parties for roofies.
….. oh no
oh no Carla
You did not just say that to A Booster.
Booster? This is Charlie in the strip?
Please don’t worry. So far, it feels like the deep need to be the smartest person in the room went entirely into one twin out of two – and it ain’t Charlie.
It’s why we love them.
Is this a Mario Bros movie thing?
“Hi, we are the Booster siblings. I’m Booster Booster and this is my sister: Charlie Booster”
C-c-c…c-can I ask where to purchase a Booster Pack?!
Carla’s the type of person to demand a discount after being PROVEN wrong isn’t she?
…Charlie’s gonna be set for life… once the both of them get some proper focus.
I love these two. Can every strip just be about them? Thanks.
The world is not ready for that level of goodness. We aren’t worthy yet.
Maybe a spinoff?
Carla: That’s why I actually now live here in this floor.
*proceeds to kick out another student from their room*
The adoration is adorable.
Do we even know who is in Curry Wing? I don’t remember the comic being here before.
No, we don’t. So far we only know the third floors of Clarke and Beck wings here in Read Hall and an unspecified floor in one of the Forest Quad towers. Curry has never been mentioned so far (although I believe all four wings’ names were visible in the main hall in at least one strip)
I… I feel like I’m being gaslit from second hand fumes
Why?
Today I learned – Playfully over-the-top compliments to your girlfriend = gaslighting.
I’m so glad the comments are here to tell us what totally normal behaviors to pathologize.
Man she just being cute with her girlfriend, lay it off a bit wouldn’t you?
As a person with a couple disabilities (comorbidity’ll get you every time) fuck that. I don’t want my partners to treat me like a project, they’re not my nurses, it’s not their job to help me “overcome” any part of my disabilities.
Charlie has a problem. She is not a child. It’s okay if her girlfriend is playful and supportive without worrying about fixing her.
Thanks! I wanted to say that but couldn’t find the right words.
As someone who is closer to 50 than college age with no sense of direction…you can’t fix this shit
I’d call them “Charla”, but it reminds me too much of Raidah’s racist friend.
How about “Carlie” instead?
As you earthlings say, I ship it!!!! ^^ <3
Aye, Carlie sounds good.
I apparently found out that I care more deeply about Charlie as Neurodivergent representation that I anticipated. Felling some strong emotions about it.
Big same. She’s really nice to see.
Yeah 100%
So does Carla get to skate around the entire campus whenever she wants? I feel like that might be against the rules and she gets away with it, but also other people should take advantage of no one enforcing the safety violation. Someone bust out a skateboard!
Carla doubtless is able to do so via the “Air Bud” loophole; aka, “nowhere in the rulebook does it say that a student *can’t* rollerskate through the buildings.”
I can’t imagine that the people on Clark Wing, second floor, are too thrtilled about this.
I once rode a dirt bike through the halls of my high school. Turned out the principal was so uptight and petty about it…
I mean, we had impromptu bouts of floor-wide laser tag with fog machines hidden in a couple rooms for the purpose. We also set up poker tournaments in the elevators.
Skating in the halls seems low on the college-kids-fucking-around-o-meter.
You mean stuff like that does/could happen at a school like IU?
idk what happens at that university in particular, but certainly it COULD. There are a bunch of unsupervised 18-20somethings in there.
If the hallways are carpeted, she must get plenty of exercise!
Carla prefers it being against the rules
https://www.dumbingofage.com/repressed/ Update, Carla has not been wrong in the past three months.
That was the purest chaotic encouragement I’ve seen in my life.
This is where Charlie found Carla, and that’s what they both wanted. How could it be wrong?
I got a question about IU interior design. Are the halls color coded or unique to each building? Cause these halls are the same kind of olive green like Read hall, but Forrest hall is blue. Are those halls in the same building but have different colors? Or is Forrest in a different building all together and Read and Curry are in the same building and that’s why the halls look the same?
Or I guess Clark wing. Is Read just the name of the building? I’ve never even been in the state of Indiana so this is all a mystery to me.
This is still January. Probably the 26th. Unless there’s time skips, or shorter chapters, we won’t see Groundhog Day until summer 2026.
which also just so happens to be the 40th anniversary of the The Transformers: The Movie ^^
For a moment here, I wondered what brought Carla to Curry second floor. Then I remembered: it’s the mere existence of people who may not know how awesome she is.
