Sarah was prepared to push past her social anxiety, even risk her future for even a chance at Jacob, but didn’t have it in her to take that opportunity when it was right in front of her.
Where-as no such hoops exist for Lucy. It’s not fair, it was never fair.
All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and Sarah at last is compelled to face with ironically sober senses the reality of her condition, and her relationship with others
Yeah I guess she was on to something the first time around – cynical, result oriented loner with no time for relationships. The perfect strategy for college if you can pull it off without the stress and regrets eating you alive.
That last part is something I ain’t no stranger to, except for me I dropped out because of the 2020 pandemic and wound up focusing on freelance game programming.
Opportunities are ALWAYS being missed because of factors one cannot control, and if I still feel like a loser because I ain’t got no degree or girlfriend, I just tell myself that life is much like arcade fighter games like Street Fighter 2, which were known for downright cheating the player to make them keep pumping in quarters.
That is, we are often made to feel like we’re “losers” and “missing out” because someone long ago decided it should be that way for purely selfish reasons. And all you have to do is take that power back from them, and you will be a winner.
We are salmon, swimming and leaping and flopping upstream! Thank you for the theme song!!!
My sister and I were once talking about all the “successful” people who are younger than us. Then we realized what an amazing accomplishment it is just to BE US. Every victory — staying clean and sober, staying stably housed, staying out of prison or jail, staying free from hospitals, maintaining a relationship, getting health care, meeting our daily needs, maintaining a routine… just using the spoons to get UP out of BED EVERY DAY and focus on ALL those projects is a tremendous life accomplishment!
(I don’t mean any shade to anyone who is NOT doing all those things, of course! Everyone has their own vital goals and circumstances and states of being. I just meant those were the steps that my sister and I, each personally, wanted to celebrate at that time.)
Your comment didn’t come off remotely smug. Everyone’s circumstances are different, and if somebody has things a little better than someone else, they’re still allowed to be happy about what they’ve managed to accomplish. Anyone who’d hold good fortune and hard work against someone else isn’t worth pleasing, anyway.
And the dating/romance landscape at 40 (not to mention 50, 60, etc) is radically different than anything you’ve experienced before. It doesn’t get easier with age; it goes the opposite way.
If there is one thing I have learned the hard way, it’s that framing one’s goals too tightly can make it more difficult to achieve them, as we have also seen with Dorothy’s struggle.
Instead of attempting to answer, “how do I become president”, perhaps a better problem for her to solve would be “how do I help as many people as possible” and “how do I help them”?
As for love life, perhaps instead of asking “how do I find a partner”, perhaps a better question would be “what do I want out of a partner?” and “will I necessarily be able to fulfill those desires and not feel so lonely with the help of but a single person”?
Western culture’s established Romanticist idea that a romantic partner is necessarily the answer to all that can easily do more harm than good, as explored in this 5-minute video by School of Life I think is very much worth a watch:
I’m not seeing the “didn’t have it in her to take that opportunity” part. It’s not like she hasn’t tried. She’s been really, really forward with Jacob lately. He simply isn’t interested in what she’s got to offer. That’s not Sarah failing to act when she had a chance, that’s just Sarah never having a chance in the first place.
Like when they were at the gym, and he wanted to have a conversation with her. And she was just objectifying him. Or when he said “I would be happy to hang out with you if you could be honest about how you feel.” And she told him that she was horny. He wants a relationship that isn’t based around sex, and Sarah might not be the right person for that.
It’s not that Sarah’s “not attractive enough” or that he “isn’t interested in what she’s got to offer.” It’s that Sarah and Jacob don’t want the same things. He wants a relationship, and she doesn’t. Not yet at least. She’s barely comfortable with the idea of opening up her shell and trying to be friends. If it was Jacob and Sarah kissing right now, you *know* that after the kiss ended, the only “opening up” Sarah would be comfortable with doing would be Jacob’s shirt.
We all know that, right? If one person wants a relationship, and the other person only wants a fuckbuddy but is willing to *endure* the pretense of a relationship to get in their pants, then they shouldn’t be together, right?
Hell – isn’t that basically what Sarah is afraid Joe is doing to Joyce right now, and why she’s so overprotective?
Lucy wants a relationship with someone who will value her, respect her, and when it comes to it, defend her. Jacob can give her that.
Jacob wants a relationship with someone who is genuinely kind and caring, and who is willing to be friends first. Lucy can give him that.
I think you’re wrong here. I think Sarah does now want more than just fuckbuddy status, she’s just trapped behind the facade she’s had up so long and terrified of letting herself be vulnerable enough.
I don’t think what’s she’s been struggling with in reaching out to him has just been to get into his pants. It’s just really hard for her.
She doesn’t want a relationship. At best, she wants to want a relationship. Or, she wants to be the kind of person who would want a relationship. But the relationship itself is scary and uncomfortable and would make her very very vulnerable and so every fiber of her being is pulling her back.
You can say that’s “wanting it but terrified” and I can say that’s “not wanting it, but wanting to want it,” but either way we’re describing the same thing.
I mean, she literally fought with Jacob about how angry she was that he just kept giving her so many chances and being so nice, when all she just wanted to do was bone. To her, THAT was opening up. She still believes that the kind words she said about him are BS. She still says she hates people. She didn’t show a twinge of discomfort when acknowledging that she had no idea which phone number was Lucy’s. There’s an epiphany here that hasn’t happened yet: she’s taking actions because she WANTS to evolve, but she hasn’t yet learned what she needs to in order to really change.
The only ‘relationship’ that I truly think she’d willingly endure at this point was one basically like what Joyce thrust upon her – in which the other person just chose to love her, unconditionally, with infinite patience, letting all her insults and arguments and abrasiveness go, until eventually she was worn down enough to stop fighting and just accept it. And that’s *horrifying*.
I hope that this will be something that pushes her in the right direction. She can’t really be a good partner if she never really learns to be a good friend, and she can’t learn to be a good friend until she learns to love herself. Because she *hates* herself, and what she’s had to do and who she’s had to become to get where she is in the world.
Sorry. Got a bit psychoanalysis-y. Lotta that’s headcanon, I know. But I don’t think I’m off base.
I don’t think that Lucy is currently Raidah-ing, but I do think that Raidah herself will absolutely stick her unwanted nose into this once she finds out about it.
To be fair, though we haven’t focused on them as much, the hoops exist for Lucy too. She spent months interested in Walky, without being able to make a move on him to get things started. Here, she’s making her move boldly and blatantly.
Definitely a big change.
Lucy’s into sitcom schemes, but I can’t see Jacob going along with it after what happened with Joyce. He also just doesn’t seem the type. And I don’t think Lucy would do it without cooperation with Jacob.
Most seas have are partially enclosed by land and are located where land meets the sea. The Sargasso Sea is the exception; it’s defined only by currents. I think it’s currently the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) that makes those decisions.
I don’t blame Lucy for getting with Jacob, just found it a bit funny that not even a few hours ago she was making mopey faces about him going back to Dorothy after just two days.
He and Sarah JUST had a heart to heart, where they were open about their feelings, or at least Sarah was. Jacob danced around the issue, knowing that Sarah was romantically interested in him.
And then he kisses a random stranger right in front of her not three hours later? That’s MESSED UP, dude.
If you aren’t interested in Sarah, you owe it to her to communicate that clearly and not keep stringing her along while you play the field. Both Sarah and Lucy are innocent here, Jacob’s the one at fault.
It’s even worse than that; Lucy is not just clearly on the rebound, but she’s also had at least three plastic cups of booze by now – he’s not drunk, and she’s *acting* sober and in charge, but he doesn’t know for sure how in control she really is. I get the same way after a couple of drinks and while I’m definitely barely into tipsy I would still side-eye a totally sober friend being willing to jump my bones in that state. Even if I wasn’t asexual! Maybe it’s the age gap – university was over ten years ago for me now – but the dance is one thing, the kiss another, the follow-up worse.
Is it really stringing along to say “wait, I want to keep talking to you,” as she runs away? I think he IS interested but she’s not meeting him on his level.
I gotta agree with you here. Jacob shouldn’t be kissing anyone here in public for everyone to see. Talking, sure. But keep any first moves for later and in private. He knows Sarah has feelings; snogging right in front of her is callous. And he doesn’t know Lucy well at all, so she’s the last woman he should be lip-locking right now.
I wish we live in a world where one could always assume someone saying something completely bizarre was not being serious but sadly the world we live in is the internet.
It isn’t weird. It’s a completely reasonable response to the comment that since he doesn’t know Lucy well, she’s the last woman he should be lip-locking. Nono responds that, no, the last woman he should be lip-locking is Joyce. There is nothing weird or sarcastic about this. If zee disagrees they ought to at least say why.
I was referring to what Stemweed say, not Nono. And sorry yes all the stuff they say is bizarre like, people don’t need to be in a private space just to kiss? Jacob can kiss whoever he damn please he isn’t in any commited relationship (and no, having a bit flirting with someone doesn’t count).
I feel bad for Sarah, honestly. While she was finally giving a better attempt, guess it was too late.
Don’t really feel bad for Walky though. I think him breaking it off with Lucy was unfortunate as he clearly was trying to take it slow, but he found a rebound with Dorothy rather quickly.
… Man, all this rebounding you’d think we were in a wrestling ring.
Pretty sure she broke it off with him when he refused to defend her with his parents until it was too late (and I’m not sure she’s aware that he did after the fact).
The woman he loved. The woman he only wasn’t with because she broke up with him to focus on her life goals.
But sure, focus on whatever you want to make it sound shitty. He’s not a bad person for not factoring Lucy’s feelings into his next steps after she split up with him.
I don’t think they’re trying to make him out to be a bad person here, Laura’s generally pretty rational. I think they’re just pointing out how it must look to Lucy. Walky did nothing wrong, it just doesn’t look good. It’s an objective fact but not a moral failing
I think the issue with Lucy’s perspective is how schewed it is. She’s already proven that she saw way more in a relationship with Walky than there was, and she’s willing to ignore some of the things he did because he wasn’t in love with her in the span of a couple weeks, because she was in love with him after crushing on him and hanging around him for months with the hopes of dating him. (A dishonest thing that, when guys do it, is called out in friend groups.)
I do. Poor guy was thrown away by one girl who had buried him under a pile of assumptions, into the arms of another girl who is shovelling furiously to do the same.
“There is a theory that states that if the Question and the Answer are both known at the same time, the universe will insinstantaneously disappear, to be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
“There is another theory which states that this has already happened.”
Gah I it “report comment” on this comment by mistake.
Sorry. My brain just likes clicking on the page to say “yes indeed I am on this portion of the page right now”. Oftentimes it also likes to select text that I’m reading.
We have to save them up for when we really need them.
Why would we need them. Well. in Jacobs own words, he has a storied history of jealous girl friends. https://www.dumbingofage.com/2017/comic/book-7/02-everything-youve-ever-wanted/storied/ I believe he also said that he doesn’t put up with jealousy. At the same time, we’ve seen him flirt, and to a certain (perhaps unconscious) extent, lead girls on when he’s dating someone else. It’s not hard to suspect this is a pattern. Lucy may have more than she bargained for.
One of the issues I have with this is that Lucy has repeatedly made a point of claiming she wants to befriend Sarah especially and the rest of the group in general. Even while talking to Jacob earlier.
This isn’t the way to do that, to say the least. Not clear whether she was lying then, just lacks the social awareness to see the outcome or just got swept up in flirting with Jacob.
Alternately, this is Lucy being a true friend by rescuing Sarah from a relationship that wasn’t going to work out and only lead to frustration. Sarah should be grateful.
Fortunately we’re on the Internet and I don’t have to type this with a straight face.
Eh, given how many times Sarah rebuffed the proffered friendship, I think it’d be appropriate for Lucy to just count that as a rejection and move on as if they weren’t friends.
That’s fair, but she hasn’t done that. (Unless this counts.)
She’s said again and again she wants to be friends. It’s uncool to say that and do this. (Unless again, she doesn’t realize Sarah’s interested in Jacob.)
Agreed, but I’m kind of hoping they end up exploding spectacularly because that’d be narratively interesting to watch. (Or that we get some “not everyone who smooches ends up in a relationship” rep in this comic again)
When did “feel bad” get replace by “feel badly?” As my high school English teacher liked to say, “You can only feel badly if you’re paralyzed or dead.”
Language evolves. People exist who do not speak English as a first language. If you can understand what they meant by what they said, you’re just being a smug jerk in “correcting” them.
This isn’t class, your teacher isn’t here, no one is grading this. It’s the real world and people talk how they talk.
I’ve tended to think of the adverb form as being the one preferred by overly picky grammarians — ‘feel’ is a verb, so it has to be modified by an adverb. cf “I’m good” vs “I’m well”.
Near the end of 8th grade, I lost my friendships with all my closest friends. Then that summer, I realized I was queer, and so going into high school, I thought it might be particularly appealing to try to find other queer kids to be friends with. My closest friends in high school ended up being two cishet girls. But those friends who had ditched me back at the end of middle school? Turns out they were all actually also queer.
fast forward to thirty years after The Ambiguous Now In Which Dumbing of Age takes place. none of the interns at the law firm understand why Ms. Clinton flies into a frothing rage on the first note of that one song by the old Earth musician Taylor Swift. all they know is four interns have been thrown out a window and nobody wants to be the fifth. maybe she just doesn’t like classic rock? who knows.
Poor Sarah… I don’t disapprove of this pairing, and I feel like it might spur on Sarah growth (and I like Lucy and Jacob)… But man, a whole kiss happening right in front of her- either way it feels bad. She really did try her best :(. On a lighter note, I find it silly that Wally is saying that with Dorothy standing besides him haha.
On the one hand Jacob and Lucy shouldn’t be beholden to anything but what they might be interested in. Walky rebounded and in turn deserves to see what this feels like.
…But all the same, Sarah didn’t deserve this stray. She can be prickly, and sure she had said in no uncertain terms that she didn’t expect Lucy to last long in the group but…from a certain point of view, Lucy just shut that down through malicious kindness. She pushed Danny forward to keep the party going and yoinked Sarah’s crush.
It really seems you are keen on seeing some kind of intentional manipulation on Lucy’s actions that is simply not there. She just started some music to defuse a tense situation and started talking to a hot guy she got along with before. It’s really that simple.
Does the concept of deserve apply here? Sarah made it quite clear to Lucy that they’re not friends so Lucy owes her nothing. Sarah and Jacob are not in a romantic and/or sexual relationship so Sarah has no claim to consideration and Jacob has no obligations. Lucy recently had it quite painfully rubbed into her face that she is single. Sarah obviously considers spite a valid and moral reason to act so even if Lucy did this out of spite, it would be something that matches Sarah’s stated principles.
I think deserves is still a good word to use. Sarah was invited by Lucy as an extended hand of friendship was she not. It isn’t as if Lucy has ever really taken people at face value, more or less determined to be close. I guess what I mean by deserves is that we just saw Sarah attempt to buck up courage to talk to Jacob at the same party and fail for the umpteenth time only to watch someone more sociable do so easily what she struggles with.
Someone trying (albeit very roughly) to be sociable to get to know a crush only to have an utmost proof of failure rubbed in their face is undeserved. Again, neither Lucy or Jacob need to set and rise on Sarah’s wants but one has to feel like Sarah did not need to be punched down when she’s already not good with social skills.
She may entirely regress from this, potentially pull an Amber or Ethan.
If Lucy did do this out of spite, which I’m not at all sure of, it completely clashes with her repeated statements about wanting to stay in this friend group and befriend Sarah specifically.
Lol, Booster is throwing shade. There are (excluding them) at least what? 4 confirmed queer people here, not counting any Joyce/Dorothy/Walky obliviousness.
Pretty sure Walky isn’t oblivious. He hasn’t dated any guys that we’re aware of (possibly because of what his mother would say/do) but he’s implied here and there that it’s not off the table.
Simultaneously happy for Lucy and Jacob cause they have really good chemistry…. And feeling very awkward for Sarah. I think i relate, I’ve had many times when i thought something was going somewhere, but my inhibitions held me back until it was too late. It takes a LOT of those experiences to grow and get better at taking the initiative. But still ….oof.
This is an interesting development, but feels kind of wild on Jacob’s part. Like what the hell was the “I really like your arms” encounter, then, if he isn’t interested in her? Is this just like, totally casual then, or was he outright leading Sarah on?
He may not be drunk, but I doubt he’s thinking too much about Sarah right now. The moment arose spontaneously, and he took it. Maybe he’ll regret it later (at least doing it right in front of Sarah), we’ll see.
Yes, given what happened with Joyce (and that Lucy is comprable to Joyce), this isn’t actually out-of character for him. It sucks to see it here, though.
Honestly, it felt like he was playing with Sarah all through this arc. Made me like him quite a deal less. I’m actually happy this stage of Sarah humiliating herself in front of him and him just watching with a smile is over.
He was trying to talk to Sarah earlier and she walked away when she found out he didn’t need to be drunk to talk about feelings. I don’t think that felt good for Jacob.
that’s not really what happened, though. SHE approached HIM to talk, while tipsy, inadvertently mentioned that she was risking her scholarship by getting drunk, and then panicked as soon as she realized what she’d just said and the gravity of how dumb she was being.
yeah she panicked and bolted, but it wasn’t “when she found out he didn’t need to be drunk to talk about feelings.” her panicking wasn’t really about him at all. that’s the part i’m talking about.
I feel bad for Sarah but I don’t really think less of Jacob for flirting with more than one person. He’s tried to connect with Sarah and she’s pulled away every time. Kissing Lucy in front of her is not the best thing, maybe? But also, not sure he realises how bad Sarah has it for him.
Flirting with someone isn’t “leading them on” it’s just flirting. It’s perfectly reasonable (as a person who isn’t in a monogamous relationship with another person) to flirt with Person A and kiss Person B in the same day.
OTOH, this is Jacob and he’s definitely gotten his flirt on with people in the past while in a monogamous relationship. I don’t think he really realizes it though. His natural style interacting with girls is flirty, especially if he’s got any interest all. He’s not doing it with any intent, as far as we know. It’s just his style.
Which makes it harder to see how much he was intentionally flirting with Sarah earlier.
Flirting while in a monogamous relationship is also not cheating imho, but certainly when he kissed Joyce it was bad.
Anyway, my point wasn’t “this isn’t difficult to read” or “this isn’t a thing he should be more conscious of”, just “this isn’t leading someone on” it’s regular human behavior.
Definitely not cheating. Not intentionally leading anyone on, but quite possibly given misleading impressions he doesn’t want to give.
And if, as I suspect, it’s a thing that’s gotten him in trouble before, it’s something he should probably work on.
ya, there’s no commitment here being broken. It would be a bummer though, for Sarah it probably feels like he’s been setting up some hoops to encourage her. I expect they have different understandings of their interactions, hopes and whatnot.
He’s kind of been, “I will teach you how to socialize, I am an extrovert, I am great at it,” but he doesn’t really understand how other people can experience the world either. He’s like Dorothy, but with charisma.
I suspect that, deep down, Jacob is a LOT hornier than a lot of people realize, including himself! For all that he tries to act very world-wise and emotionally intelligent, I don’t think he quite knows how to deal with his strong feelings of attraction to multiple women. Remember, this is how he got into trouble with Raidah and Joyce, too!
What’s the opposite of buying a lottery ticket? Starting a savings account? I guess I should do that cause I lost big today. It’s fine. Sarah will recover and find someone taller and more ripped, and with an objectively better haircut! And he’ll have blackjack and hookers! Just as soon as Willis introduces more dudes into the cast.
Yeah that’s the part that hurts the most right now- who else in the cast could Sarah even date? Sarah seems 100% het, there are about twice as many girls in the cast as boys, I can’t even think of anybody else from the Walkyverse that she had any chemistry with. If Mike turns out to be in witness protection I can almost barely see that relationship working, or maybe some Dumbiverse background Walkyverse characters like Tony could suddenly come into the story… but those are really, really big stretches that would be way off in the distance. I suppose Booster or Malaya have a tiny tiny chance of turning out to have some chemistry with Sarah but that seems optimistic to even call a moonshot.
I’m not saying Sarah is “lonely” exactly and people don’t need romance to be valid people, but… she’s clearly been deeply unhappy for the entire run of the comic, and she just keeps soldiering onward, and it would be really nice for her to get some big meaningful things that she wants at some point that makes her feel more comfortable with herself and have someone close to her that she feels able to be open with. Like I’m sure she’s going to be a very successful lawyer five years after she graduates but that’s not a career we’re going to get to see in this comic short of some time skip epilogue panels.
So while i still find lucy utterly repulsive, i will not fault jacob his choice in who to date cause I don’t wanna prevent his ability to have a safe relationship with a person he chooses who might actually care what he thinks and wants to do. If he wants lucy fine. the one credit i will give her is that she encouraged walky in a positive way unlike raidah who openly just tried to shape jacob into a version of himself she found acceptable. I just never wanna see her again and unfortunately this will not enable that. Especially if raidah continues to recruit lucy and this somehow brings jacob back into that horrible social circle of awfulness.
Lucy has already shown that she knows how to make her moves, it is possible that Raidah will notice that and in the worst case scenario, she will not hesitate to find a way to do something bad to Jacob.
Although I want to believe that Jacob makes Lucy understand that Raidah is not what she seems. (I hope so)
I have dated a girl almost exactly like lucy in the past and it was the second worst relationship i ever had. So i will admit that some of the hate if feel for the comic character is due to social ptsd but that doesn’t change the utter repulsion and disgust i feel seeing her.
Yeah, something going down in the Lucy/Jacob/Raidah region of the social landscape is the most fertile opportunity for drama in this ship, so that does feel likely.
My big question is… Does Lucy have a genuine romantic interest in Jacob, or is she just flirting with him out of some sort of revenge against Walky.
There are reasons to think the 2 of them are a good match… Shared religious belief, similar morality, etc. On the other hand, Jacob does not share the same interest in comics/cartoons, they have different academic interests, and he is quite different in body type/attitude as walky. (Ie she showed she was attracted to slim, snarky guys, so either she has a broad range of what she finds attractive or she is playing with him even though she isn’t his type)
I think secret third option: she is not doing it to piss Walky off, she doing it because she is devastated inside and wants to feel good in the moment. And a conquest feels good after a broken relationship. Also making out feels good.
Like, if this was any other party without Walky being there, this still would have happened.
If I am right, I wonder what this will lead to in the next days.
You know, I’m kind of bothered by Lucys extreme personality change and hypocrisy. She’s upset at Walky for rebounding with his ex 2 days after the breakup, but introduces herself to Jacob by implying shes willing to give him head. Then immediately moves into aggressive flirting and making out on the dance floor in public. With a guy she barely knows. At least Walky got back with someone hr had a significant prior relationship with and had known for a long time prior. And he also apologized for it being so soon.
I don’t judge her for her behavior by itself. I’m saying it seems extremely out of character for the Lucy we’ve seen presented in prior strips. If it were a new female character i would see no problems with it. Or even if it had been Amber or Dorothy for example it would make more sense. But it was just a couple days ago in universe that she was agonizing over the number of dates needed for sex with her boyfriend and now she’s suddenly opening a conversation with a guy by implying she’s going to blow him. That’s a pretty extreme change in a couple of days. It would be more on brand for Roz. Hell, even Dorothy or Joyce would make more sense. Dorothy because of prior sexual experience and the shown arc where she’s trying to do something impulsive sexually because of her crisis about Yale, or Joyce because she’s been very aggressive with Joe about what she’s wanting. Its just for Lucy it doesn’t make sense.
Apologizing doesn’t mean he’s over it though. You can still feel pain or a sense of loss. And he might be having a bit of well deserved empathy by seeing what ut feels like for his ex to move on so aggressively and easily from him. For walky its probably his first time experiencing something like that.
Oh noooo, an unattached college-age woman is smooching an unattached college-aged man she finds attractive. Where are my pearls? I need to clutch them!
And nothing of note happened with her character between these two periods. Especially not a decision to be more assertive in her relationships and to prioritize herself more.
It’s not hypocrisy to say “damn, what you’ve done really doesn’t align with who I thought you were when I fell for you, maybe our relationship wasn’t built on anything at all” and then moving on.
Lucy’s been thirsty as hell ever since the idea that she and Walky should pork was floated by Billie, this is nothing new. I’m less sure why Walky cares about her hooking up with Jacob now that he’s with Dorothy again?
Lucy’s problem with Walky rebounding wasn’t so much the rebound itself, it was the context around it. Last time she saw Walky break up he deliberately refrained from immediately rebounding, specifically to avoid hurting his ex’s feelings. That was even one of the things she liked about him.)
Now this breakup came around, and suddenly Walky (apparently*) abandoned his earlier principles. Implying that either he’s a worse person than she thought, or he’s specifically considering her to not be worth his usual civility. Either way, that stings far more than the rebound.
joyce is gonna have to reconsider that statement in the context of her lesbian best friend and her gay ex bf and her other best friend’s at-least-bicurious-given-past-dialogue bf and also her bicurious relationship with that best friend that’s queerly obvious to everyone except her
not sure if walky has reason to be disappointed here, he showed up with a date who is also his ex. I get that feelings are irraitional but like, come on, man
maybe he just thinks sarah’s gonna say this is his fault and hit him with the bat though
rip sarah but let’s hope lucy and jacob actually explicitly say the things they want and feel
I think that’s the proper translation of Booster here, “Huh! You’re really that oblivious? You don’t know you *are* at the queer party?? Well I’m not going to out everyone here.”
is it that hypocritical? Lucy didn’t go up to walky and dorothy and tell them they had to stop. She had an emotional reaction to seeing walky with dorothy, and the two of them immediately started to try to apologize for it. She explained her feelings, which I think is a natural thing to do in that context. It would’ve been hypocritical if she called Walky bad person, but I don’t think that was her intention.
Once upon a time, many many years ago I tried to decide whether I wanted to join a local MENSA group or a local Science Fiction group. I decided the Science Fiction group had cuter girls.
Yes, I subsequently realized I could have joined both. But no-one said I was smart.
Obviously a bummer for Sarah to experience, but it’s for the best. They were a bad match. Gotta be a weird situation for Dorothy, with how Walky’s reacting.
This is Danny’s fault, he should have chosen a song whose lyrics didn’t describe this situation.
Dorothy knows the way Walky usually expresses himself, let’s hope it’s not serious, but yes, something tells me that that two-day speech was just a display of maturity on Lucy’s part.
On one hand we have happiness refound and on the other is the heartbreak felt round the world. As someone who’s experienced watching a major crush make out with someone else, I feel for her tons. But at the same time I can’t help but feel happy for Lucy.
Joyce, Booster is *perfectly aware* of the friends they’ve gravitated to. Those friends (including who they’re talking to at this moment) may not be aware, though.
I feel for sarah. being vulnerable with Jacob was so hard for her. She finally found the courage to open up. it would’ve been very sweet and satisfying if life had rewarded her for that effort. But it doesn’t always work that way, does it…
yeah I was rooting for sarah and jacob but always had a gut feeling it wouldn’t happen. Mostly because the chemistry between them doesn’t seem to be there. Jacob has known Sarah is into him for a while now. I think if he was sure he was into her, he would’ve tried to initiate something more directly. maybe he does like her, but definitely not as much as she likes him. Vs. with Lucy, the chemistry is more apparent. He barely knows her and they’re kissing already. they’re cute!
OK so I know Sarah’s deal. And I am sympathetic enough to feel bad for her.
But what’s Walky’s deal? Is this some weird thing with Jacob being a much better catch than he could ever be? So it’s hitting him in his imagined insecurities?
He was never over Lucy. It’s been pretty obvious. Also yes it might sting to see your ex move on to someone taller, stronger, subjectively more attractive than you if you were somewhat insecure in your masculinity like Walky definitely is.
He wasn’t claiming to be head over heels in love with her (which is a point in his favour) but he still liked her plenty. Plus I get the impression that Lucy’s “you’re not good enough for me” breakup speech kicked him in his already low self esteem, and that it’s still smarting.
I think he has feelings for Lucy that were never resolved or fully expressed because of lucy essentially pre-dating him for a whole, the relationship getting elliot reided, and him just being himself.
If Lucy had straight up asked him out instead of hanging out and hoping something happend they would’ve had a better shot but also if Walky was a little more mature that would’ve been way less of a problem.
Lucy deserves to feel wanted in a relationship. This is good for her. It’s just sad to see it happen at Sarah’s expense, who we, as the readers, have seen try so very hard to grow.
yes, this!! but on the other hand, if sarah comes away from this thinking, “ok, I didn’t get the guy. But I’m glad I tried anyway, I don’t regret it”, I would be so proud of her!
It’s not an easy thing to do, so it might take her a while, but I hope she gets there eventually cause it’s going to be a sad time for her til she does.
Side note: It’s hard to believe these two aren’t drunk, this is like their second time meeting…but screw it, whirlwind romances seem to work well and stick around here.
I’ve been looking at this all wrong actually. If things develop past a kiss and they start dating then that’s a good thing for Lucy x Jacob haters. Relationships inevitably lead to drama and I will relish every moment their seemingly perfect on paper romance fumbles until the day they’re married.
I voted based on what I feel is most likely. Between Lucy, Sarah, and a sock, I genuinely think the sock has a better chance of touching Jacob’s dick “tonight” than either of the women.
Huh. Interesting. Rereading the past few strips, I feel like the comic gives the impression that this was a very calculator and deliberate move on Lucy’s part. Did she really not realize Sarah was into Jacob? Or does she just not care? (Feeling too hurt and angry at Walky to care, etc.) I’m having a really hard time reading Lucy here.
I think it’s intentional (and very well written) that we cannot tell how intentional Lucy’s behaviour was /yet/. It allows us to see how a situation can be read differently from different people’s knowledge and perspective.
Those who know about Sarah’s feelings for Jacob and the fact that Raidah had made Lucy antagonistic towards Sarah (e.g. Walky) might interpret Lucy’s actions as schemed or deliberate and Lucy as a Radaih-in-the-making.
But also Lucy might not realise Sarah’s crush on Jacob at all, and her comment about her and Jacob both trying to make “friends” with Sarah might have been Lucy genuinely missing the subtext – she had her blind spots to what was really going on when she was with Walky after all. Jason has agency and they both have genuine chemistry, there’s no reason they shouldn’t hook up, especially when she just found out her ex hasn’t held back.
Yeah, you’re right, it’s very ambiguous! Even Jacob’s perspective is unclear — he did appear to be flirting with Sarah a little bit earlier, but then again she does run hot and cold on him all the time. So I can both see him being like “What? No, what I was building with Sarah was a friendship, I don’t like her like that” and “Yeah I know she likes me and I like her too, but she’s constantly going back and forth so I figured it wasn’t going anywhere” (and various other points along that spectrum).
I doubt Lucy knows Sarah enough to know she’s into Jacob. But even if she did… so what? Sarah and Jacob aren’t dating, and Lucy and Sarah aren’t friends so we can’t even claim that much obligation towards Sarah’s hypothetical love life.
I am honestly confused about whether Lucy considers herself Sarah’s friend or not. She did explicitly say she was trying to befriend her a few strips ago, but she was saying it to Jacob.
That’s one of the things. She’s got no moral obligation to let Sarah have dibs, but if she does know about Sarah’s interest, this move is pretty much calculated to kill any chance of befriending Sarah, which says interesting things about her motivations.
OTOH, she could just be oblivious to Sarah’s interest.
ok, I know that Walky cared about his relationship with Lucy after all, but why would the sight of his ex kissing her make him feel like he wanted to go to the vastness of the ocean next to his new friend with benefits?
secondly, I didn’t expect Jacob to be the type who kisses during the first dance, the previous strips didn’t really suggest it
You could be right, but we’ve seen Walky and Dorothy care about each other. Dorothy falling in love with him in spite of herself and Walky caring about Dorothy after the break up. Which one do you see initiating a new break-up. It was Dorothy’s goals that caused the last one, but at this point she’s rejected her presidential aspirations and failed to accept Yale’s offer. Walky makes her happy. Walky’s suggestion he should just commit suicide by walking into the sea is over the top and apparently said calmly. It comes shortly after Lucy’s dramatic reaction to him getting together with Dorothy in such a short time. Walky communicates in snark, and there is no reason to believe he is in any way serious. There is no reason to believe that Dorothy will take his threat of self drowning at all seriously.
Dorothy is also the active one of the two and do you seriously see her sabotaging the prospect of double dates with Joyce?
So you may be right about Dorothy and Walky not lasting much longer, but I don’t see it.
I can empathize with Sarah’s feelings, but I don’t actually feel badly for her. Nothing about “making an effort” entitles her to be the one Jacob falls for, no matter how long or unrequited her crush.
Man’s got agency, too.
Getting on Lucy for making a move on Jacob after Sarah invited her denies him that agency.
Even if Sarah weren’t a prickly misanthrope, even if she’d done everything exactly “right” in her pursuit of Jacob, he might still have chosen Lucy.
Y’all may be reading this differently. To me this may be an indication that Booster may have a “non-standard” gender identity that they are comfortable with (Booster seems very comfortable in their own skin) but aren’t necessarily gay. The two people we have seen them express an interest in, Amber and Ruth are both (A) a mess and (B) clearly female. To me it seems that Booster is trying to communicate to Joyce that having “they” as a pronoun is not at all the same as being queer and it is completely going over Joyce’s head.
I feel like Booster should know well enough that if they want to get the particular point of “pronouns =/= gender identity” into Joyce’s head that they need to state the point directly rather than make veiled reference and hope she gets it. And while I know that there are people out there who don’t label being themselves queer while having an identity that generally falls under the queer umbrella, I see no reason to suspect Booster considers themself part of that group.
Gosh! I approve of everything Lucy has done since getting to this party — and I don’t think she even knows about Sarah’s feelings towards Jacob or anything anyway… And Sarah’s sad expression is so open and vulnerable in the last panel. It’s all nicely done and I’m interested to see what happens next.
Also, I hadn’t heard this Taylor Swift song before, so that’s a fun find for me 😊
i feel like raidah would’ve maybe said something, or just that sarah tried to ‘use/throw joyce at jacob’ versus “sarah totally wants my bf” but can’t go wrong with more drama
Lucy is perceptive enough to see a lot of things, but I doubt she was scheming this. I mean, she barely knows Sarah, of her own admission, and Jacob and Lucy made sense.
I honestly predicted it before, but I didn’t think it would happen this soon.
Well, that was fast. but i guess it is a college party XD; Tho ironic if they’re both the sober ones outta the whole party (well i guess lucy did have a drink or so but she’s the only one also not with bubbles)
I guess joyce hasn’t talked to ethan yet/know that he and asher hooked up
Jacob and Lucy messing around is not really a surprise.
Them doing it after knowing each other for one day is.
Neither of them ever gave that kind of vibe.
Lucy is understandable, as she is horny, has just had a breakup, wants to make changes, just saw her ex that she loves rebound with his past love, and is at least tipsy.
But Jacob does not want to be defined by sex/horniness, has spent the past few days encouraging a girl he knows has romantic feelings for him to open up to him, and hasn’t had a drop of alcohol.
To make out in public with a veritable stranger he’s known a day (albeit one he has chemistry with), after only exchanging a couple dozen sentences, and in front of the girl he knows wants him really seems weird to me.
Yes, people do this, but I never would have thought Jacob would.
I am also a little surprised that it went this fast! I thought they would get to know each other a bit more before anything happened.
My guess is that they hit it off and there was some chemistry right away, so they just went for the kiss. Unlike Sarah, Lucy isn’t objectifying him and is talking to him like a person. It seems like Jacob is lonely and looking for that kind of attention.
It is kind of contrary to Jacob’s past statements about being interesting in romance and not liking when women are just interested in him for his body. Not that I think Lucy really is, but that attitude would seem to lead him to a more cautious get to know you first approach, rather than just making out at a party after exchanging a few words.
Honestly i think it aint any more complicated then: they’re both perfectly likable people, who don’t have trouble socializing, are cute, and don’t have anything in the way. We know Lucy is kind of his type. He’s left the field open for Sarah multiple times. And as I’ve said before f’ lucy: Good for her. He’s a cute fellah. Hell they’re both religious, so that aint even a conflict.
Poor Sarah. It sucks when what’s getting in your way to being happy is not being a slightly different person then who you are.
naahh thats hella foul… she said all that about walky and how she knew he was a good guy cuz blah blah. but she turns around and does something like that “mildy drunk” (after saying she holds herself better after rooming with billy and malaya) not only that but to actively go after jacob after the only reason for her being there is because Sarah wanted her to be there as a form of being a better person/friend, WHILE knowing Sarah actively is trying to work up the courage to talk/pursue Jacob is a massive backstab.
holy shit, they really are getting DRUNK drunk….i mean, those aren’t the right lyrics! it’s “please don’t BE in love with someone else”, not “fall in love”! get it together, guys!
She met someone she liked, they hit it off, and they kissed. And the fact that she’s newly out of a relationship? She might be giving that more consideration if he were not here with his ex.
The ironic thing is that Jacob and Lucy are only here because Sarah invited them both. So, good job, Sarah, on reaching out? Or, maybe, no good deed goes unpunished.
This is having a tiny part of my brain that still experiences childlike wonder to think ancient Chinese alchemy might be onto something and that I should ingest various mercury compounds
Lucy is cheating on Dorothy, and I’ll explain how. See, Lucy was dating Walky. Walky has dated Dorothy (and is currently doing so). By transitive property, this means Lucy and Dorothy are dating (all formations of 3 or more people are automatically a polycule, according to this comments section), and so if Lucy makes out with Jacob (seen in this strip), that’s a violation of her agreed-upon commitment with Dorothy. She’s also cheating on Joyce, because Joyce kissed Jacob that one time, which links her and Lucy as well. The further we go, the more people we can see Lucy cheating on. For example, Becky has kissed Joyce, as have Ethan and Joe. Becky and Dina have kissed. Joe has been a gigantic slut, which involves at least Roz and Liz. Ethan was also a big gay slut, mackin’ on as many guys as he could manage for a while there. He also had outright sex with Mike, who we know fucked Eric, who had a girlfriend at the time and later hooked up with Ethan. There are so many people Lucy is cheating on right now, it’s frankly becoming ridiculous. In this room, I think the only person she’s not cheating on is Booster.
Sarah is related to Liz in some way (it was never mentioned in the comic, but there’s speculation they’re sisters). Liz made out with Joe, who’s kissed Joyce, who charged her J.O. crystals with Dorothy, who fucked Walky, who kissed Lucy. Therefore by kissing Jacob, who kissed Joyce, Lucy is cheating on Sarah.
Awwww this is cute.
Lucy has shed her insecurity and spread her wings and Jacob is here to bask in her glory. It could last a moment, it could last more. I’m here either way. Like, good for them!
(I’m on the side of “Neither Lucy nor Jacob have a moral obligation to cater to Sarah’s complicated desires to be both seen and unnoticed, and Sarah has no moral obligation to not be frustrated about them not being able to provide the complicated things she needs”. I mean, Lucy has accepted that she doesn’t like the way Sarah talks to people and that’s that, Jacob has accepted that Sarah feels lust for him and has indulged her by telling her something he physically likes about her. They made efforts. They’re just not that compatible with her. I’ve been Sarah as a kid, people being nice to me has been scary and has made me run away even further. Nice people had no moral obligation to wait for me to come out of my shell then, and that’s okay.)
This is…completely normal. Being infatuated with someone does not mean that you are *entitled* to their affections, and Sarah and Jacob were never going to get together without Jacob’s consent. She’s too messed up, and he just wants a woman who is a partner, not a project.
To be fair, Jacob did show clear interest in Sarah and was open to them getting closer but Sarah just kept sabotaging herself. It’s all on her that he got closer with someone who was actually Willing to do it.
Oof. I been there Walky, it really sucks. In fact when I was in his situation I completely cut off contact with many of my old dorm friends because I was too ashamed to see my ex again. They weren’t really good friends though so that part wasn’t so bad.
Anyway the worst part about being a piece of shit to someone (unintentionally or not) is that you never really get over it. The best you can do is stop picking the scab and be a little more conscious next time.
Wow. I already didn’t like Jacob, but this? Jacob and Lucy just hit new lows for fictional characters I didn’t know existed. I have half a mind to stop reading the strip to avoid these two.
Really? I mean seriously really? These two teenagers kissing is the lowest of the low for fictional characters for you? Honestly yeah I think you should drop the comic, it might be too graphic for your sensibilities.
Honestly, good fod Lucy. Sarah treated Jacob like a hunk of meat. It was never going to be a good relationship. Lucy and Jacob are matched better in personality.
I’m shocked by some of the comments here and their lack of empathy and nuance. Look, obviously Sarah has no ownership over Jacob from Jacob and Lucy can date if they want to. But It’s just plain bad manners and unkind for them to kiss at a party 1. that Sarah invited both of them, 2. When they both knew Sarah liked Jacob and was trying her hardest to open up and talk to him not minutes before, 3. They both claim to want to be her friend, 4. And to kiss literally right in front of her. Go ahead and break the poor girl’s heart. They could have had at least a little bit of discretion and tact. And if someone said that they wanted to be my friend and then they kissed the guy that they knew I had a huge crush on and was trying to get with right in front of me at the party I invited them to, I would never want to talk to them again
First there is no evidence that Lucy knows Sarah has fellings for Jacob, and she initiates the kiss, he is absolutely no at fault of anything. Second, yes Sarah invited them to a party, but that doesn’t really had any binding vow that they can’t do anything that might possibly hurt her fellings, that is not how anything works. Honestly it’s kind of weird you denounce others of lacking empathy or nuance for Sarah when you are doing the same things for those two.
I find it easy to denounce since it is so out of character. They are supposedly two of the most empathetic characters in the strip and this is what they are doing. Plus, Jacob wanted serious not to be lead with physical (once upon a time) and Lucy also had that weird dating rule. Lucy has NEVER shown being able to getting social ‘fixings, right before… she just wanted to, particularly in her wing. Danny doesn’t even like Lucy nor Walky so why did he listen? It’s just a very out of character series of events which make things seem like ‘fuck it’ choices, which is putting your hurt on the person youre saying you want to open up more… even though she invited you. I was at parties like this when I was younger, but the vast majority of the time, even while drunk, people knew enough to leave early with the person rather than do it in front of the other potentially interested person.
I think the “out of character” bit may just be rebound energy for Lucy. Throwing herself into something she wouldn’t normally have the confidence for, but using her emotions over the breakup to drive her.
Yeeaaahh she may not have the drunk bubbles, but Lucy IS intoxicated and still in a social setting with her very recent ex and his very recent renewed partnership. Those kinda things tend to make folks act out of character.
Honestly, when you started out with “I’m shocked by some of the comments here and their lack of empathy and nuance,” I thought this was going to go the other way.
Walky did not break it off. She broke up with him. His issue is it’s still a tender thing and he definitely still has SOME feelings for her even if he’s started to move on. He’s also several drinks in and they’re in a space that’s probably like 15’x15′ at best.
Like, Booster flat-out said, “You’re too good for him,” and Dorothy’s response was, “I can fix that.” And since it feels like I need to spell it out, she meant that she’d be less good.
Honestly I didn’t expect Lucy of all characters to be the one I would defend the most when I started posting in this comment section. But I will keep doing it, I stand with my girl.
I’m old, and not up on Modern Dating, but . . . whatever happened to “you snooze, you lose?” If this is no longer applicable, a lot of guys at the local bar owe me restitution for going home with the guy I was flirting with.
Don’t feel sorry for Sarah. She’s had months of chatting with Jacob and it just wasn’t happening. If after a full semester it’s not happening, it just isn’t going to. Jacob’s not moving on because there wasn’t anything there.
Feel sorry for Dorothy. Walky is clearly mourning the end of his relationship with Lucy. She’s the committed one in that relationship.
The fuck does this even mean? Walky’s feeling an emotion about the relationship he botched, two days after it ended, so he’s somehow not committed to dating Dorothy? Can you even articulate that train of thought?
For me, I don’t think he’s actually uncommitted to Dorothy, I just think articulating that emotion as a desire to delete himself in front of someone who demonstrably has a lot of emotional value invested in him is crass. It’s kinda mean. I get why he feels that way and I’ve been there, but like, saying you’re that upset over your ex in front of your current partner is a little unkind to the current partner.
Or, and I understand this is way out of character for Walky but stay with me, she understands he is making a snarky comment. Hard to believe, I know, because we all know that Walky is never ever snarky.
I mean either way it’s kinda mean to Dorothy, snark or not. I’m not sure what point you were trying to make here, my dude. Was it just to dunk on me? Free dunk, then. Be proud?
It’s not you, honest, and I’m also honestly sorry it came across that way.
It’s just that people seem to be universally understanding that Walky is upset by Lucy and Jacob. Whereas this is a private comment made to Dorothy right after Lucy guilted them for getting together so fast. The comment Walky made makes no sense at face value. I have no idea why people are assuming that Walky is hurt or upset. It’s just Walky being Walky.
The comment isn’t directed at you. It’s directed at you and the eleven jillion other people making the same assumption. Your comment was just a convenient place to put it.
While I’ve been spectacularly wrong before, it’s frustrating that people aren’t immediately convinced by my brilliant insight.
jacob and lucy hooking up, even briefly, was something anyone (who cares about either character) could see from a mile away IMO. jacob’s thing for joyce, the parallels drawn between joyce and lucy throughout the early parts of the comic especially… it sucks for sarah, whom i love dearly, but i’m hoping this will also result in pushing her character forward in an interesting direction.
anyway. JUCY TRUTHERS RISE!!! OUR TIME HAS COME. :3
I am shocked how cute I find the short queen and her knight of himbo law students, but I do.
Although yeah, poor Sarah, but like…he’s her Road Runner and she kept trying to catch him with dynamite. Wile E. is never gonna win that contest, Sarah my dearest. 🙁
Sarah only has herself to blame. She wouldn’t be honest with herself, let alone Jacob, and now she gets to watch Lucy show her how it’s done. She better not take her frustration out on Lucy.
What is this overwhelming belief in these comments that Sarah is going to go Defcon 1 on Lucy? Her whole rep was trashed by a bunch of idiotic bongos and her main response was to just curl up into a mental ball of unavailability. There s no reason to think she’s going to do or say anything to Lucy or anyone else.
As someone for whom Sarah is their favorite character, I have to say I’ve been impatiently awaiting this day. THANK GOD. Jacob is NOT into Sarah that way and the past few months I’ve had secondhand embarrassment watching their interactions. I’ve also been a tad bit miffed to see a character who had plenty of smarts and common sense portrayed as a naif who couldn’t see the writing on the wall. Now hopefully Sarah will draw a line under her Jacob infatuation and prep herself to be fully emotionally available for a person who is actually into her romantically.
Karma hit Sarah as hard as it could… poor shy, blocked Sarah! But good for Lucy and Jacob. At least that should ensure that Lucy will not join Raidah’s circle of “friend”. She knows it would be awkward, or at least I don’t think she would be welcome with Jacob. Also I got the sensation that he wouldn’t be happy to see his ex again.
That would be hilarious, but Lucy only got invited because Raidah was trying to reel in Walky as part of her plan to isolate Sarah and Joyce. So an invite to Lucy would be surprising.
Lucy, if you did want to stay in with this friend group, post-Walky, this might make that really difficult.
Is it fair? Hell no. Is it human for people in that group to see the fall-out and be affected by it? Sadly, yes.
I was going to say that I just hope this isn’t going to bounce her back at Raidah’s circle, but I doubt Jacob’s welcome there – for equivalent reasons, now I think of it.
(That last statement of mine assumes that this the street is a relationship and not just a drunken smooch. If Jacob disengages and it’s just a one of, then that that’s *hurt* and increases the ‘bounce under the influence of the mean girls group’.
This wouldn’t be good and I hate that this thought happened. 😕
You, uh, think most of the people in the friend group are that invested in if she kissed Jacob before Sarah could??? Really?? Like the only person I could see mildly holding that against her is Joyce, and you really think Lucy couldn’t turn Joyce around on that??
(The idea that anyone would get on her over how Walky feels about this rebound is even sillier. What???? That’s deranged.)
If both Walky and Sarah are trying to avoid her/push her out, that’s not a lot left of the friend group.
Dorothy won’t be hanging out with her for obvious reasons. Sarah won’t be inviting her around or walking to class with her and Jacob. Joyce’ll go with Sarah and Dorothy. Who else has Lucy talked to for more than a moment?
Like…I really can’t make this idea make sense. Why, exactly, is anyone who isn’t Sarah gonna be mad at Lucy for more than five seconds???
Sure, she macked on Jacob at a party. It’s…what you do at a college party!! It’s normal!
You know what people are gonna remember Lucy for? Getting Danny to play T-Swift so the party was saved, dancing, and bringing Settlers of Catan. She’s going to be a fun person, a good hostess, a friend. The romance drama? No one gives a shit about that except Sarah, us, and very maybe Joyce.
Walky is being selfless. The only way Sarah avoids walking into the sea herself is if Walky is hanging out there first.
Anyway, this is her origin story. Maybe not supervillain, but this is yet another defining moment right there.
The one where Sarah got upset and hit back because Lucy popped off about something she had one-sided, surface-level information about but used as a weapon anyway?
This development rules and everyone trying to frame this as some Machiavellian amount of manipulation on Lucy’s part is being extremely weird about pretty straightforward human behaviour.
I still need to know where Lucy had lunch yesterday that none of her friends would ever agree to. Was it vegan? Was it a strip club? Was it Pluto 2525? Was it the Irish pub, and all her friends are royalists? Was it the English pub and all her friends are (small r) republicans?
Good question. Maybe she just wanted to be alone and self sufficient. Maybe she’s secretly very rich with fancy parents, and doesn’t want anyone to know she hired a cab to go to the most expensive and exclusive private club in the next city over.
Eh. Although I have pity for Sarah’s feelings, she and Jacob should not be together. Their wants and needs are totally incompatible. Frankly Sarah’s kind of icky in that regard. Can you image the reaction of the other cast members if Joe had a fleshlight he called “Other Joyce”? That’s messed up.
It’s funny but…Sarah is my favorite character, but I don’t think there’s any way she’d end up with Jacob. Their personalities don’t really mesh IMO and she had been super weird to him. Lucy is like perfect for him. I was trying to think of what existing character would actually mesh with Sarah and it was hard especially since so many are already paired off–but I thought Booster actually would work since they are both so snarky and weird about people in their own ways lol
Why is Walky upset that he’s now off the guilt train? Everybody (but Sarah) seems to be winning here. It’s a party. You like goofing off. I’m so confused and a few days late to the party.
Panel 4: great idea. Evolving into Walky was clearly a mistake, time to start over from scratch.
Go at least as far back as the Cambrian era to be safe, I’m sure Dina has some charts that will help.
Smart. You don’t have to get your girlfriend flowers if they haven’t evolved yet.
Thank you panal six for providing emphasis.
Yes, I know.
That was one the most fun things to boggle my mind learning about deep history. Another one: Sharks are older than trees! XD
The Appalachian Mountains are older than bones.
And the Scottish Highlands are also the Appalachians.
Re: Sharks are older than trees – But only by about 90 million years, and that hardly counts.
ehhh. ~2.4% (1/40th) of the history of all life on earth is a pretty solid head start.

So true!!!
We don’t give ourselves enough credit for the MOUNTAINS we have climbed!

Sorry. Sorry — that came out all wrong…

I’d edit it if I could. Came off the wrong way. Did not mean to sound smug.
Just that everyone is working on climbing the stairs in front of them. That’s all I meant to say.
Thank you, Taffy. I appreciate you.
That was lovely. Yes, a good accomplishment and worth appreciating.
Thank you, Vanessa!

And next thing you know you’re closing in on 40, still alone.

Western culture’s established Romanticist idea that a romantic partner is necessarily the answer to all that can easily do more harm than good, as explored in this 5-minute video by School of Life I think is very much worth a watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jltM5qYn25w
Fascinating! Thank you for that resource!
I praised Lucy yesterday. Now, it’s time to cry with Sarah.
Cry because I’m her, that tried to get someone so many times and I’m never attractive enough. Or my quirkiness always take my front.
Instead, your brave words give courage to persist.
Yeah, same. Only without the hope. Sometimes you’ve just gotta be realistic about your prospects.
Thank you for being the rational person here.
I both agree and disagree with you.
She was forward in the way that he told her he didn’t want. And he told her exactly what he was looking for, and gave her several opportunities.
I’m hoping Lucy is genuinely into Jacob. My Raidah scheming senses are tingling.
I don’t think that Lucy is currently Raidah-ing, but I do think that Raidah herself will absolutely stick her unwanted nose into this once she finds out about it.
I think this is genuine. Like, it’s clearly a rebound, but I don’t think Lucy actually bears any malice for Sarah.
To be fair, though we haven’t focused on them as much, the hoops exist for Lucy too. She spent months interested in Walky, without being able to make a move on him to get things started. Here, she’s making her move boldly and blatantly.
Definitely a big change.
Well, here’s my prediction:
I think this is a mutual plot/ruse by Jacob and Lucy to try to spur Sarah into being honest about her feelings.
I’m not saying it’d be a *smart* ploy.
Lucy’s into sitcom schemes, but I can’t see Jacob going along with it after what happened with Joyce. He also just doesn’t seem the type. And I don’t think Lucy would do it without cooperation with Jacob.
FATALITY MOVE
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang.
Walky the sea is very far away. Just settle for Lake Michigan.
Lake Michigan is pretty big, if it was salt water It’d probably qualify as a sea.
The Great Lakes do qualify as inland seas!
Now you’ve got me wondering what are the official minimum specificications for “sea” and who makes them official.
Most seas have are partially enclosed by land and are located where land meets the sea. The Sargasso Sea is the exception; it’s defined only by currents. I think it’s currently the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) that makes those decisions.
It would be only fitting for him to do so while listening to “Drown Me in Lake Michigan” by stop.drop.rewind.
Upside: long before he reaches the sea, he’ll be distracted by the need for chicken nuggets and forget all about it.
That was fast. Not a negative, just didn’t expect to get here in the next strip from yesterday.
Second speedrunning record broken today.
Ugh, I’m heartbroken for Sarah.
Me too, a little, honestly.
I also. But don’t blame Jacob – or Lucy for that matter – for Sarah not closing the deal.
Maybe crisis not averted after all
I don’t blame Lucy for getting with Jacob, just found it a bit funny that not even a few hours ago she was making mopey faces about him going back to Dorothy after just two days.
Considering Lucy really traded up (football star, teatotaller, nice guy, built) I would say Lucy is at the “who’s Walky” stage now
Not to mention devout!
She’s Joyce without the baggage. Not a shocker he went for her.
I think current Lucy is at least partially acting in this way because of earlier.
Earlier.
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2023/comic/book-13/04-but-dont-give-yourself-away/treat/
Yup. Vengeance is a dish best served with a side of gagh.
Now say it three times fast in the original Klingon.

bortaS qagh jablu’DI’ reH QaQqu’ nay’.
<3
Oh man I completely forgot about THIS instance of “earlier”
Feeling heartbroken too but agree with you 🙁
Honestly, I’m pissed off at Jacob.
I could forgive Jacob if he was drunk, but he mad a point of saying to Sarah he was not drinking
Because attraction is purely rational and consequences are always meticulously thought out.
cues up “Some Enchanted Evening”.
lmao this isn’t even slut shaming, it’s just… regular person shaming.
No the last woman he should be lip-locking is Joyce.
No, that’s just the last person he was lip-locking. =P
This statement is so weird I thought you were being sarcastic at first
I wish we live in a world where one could always assume someone saying something completely bizarre was not being serious but sadly the world we live in is the internet.
Hm. I was thinking that zee was responding to Nono, but maybe they are responding to Stemweed as well. From the indentation, I can’t tell.
But well said.
Dude my comment wasn’t even in nonos thread it’s so obviously in reply to steamweed
Joyce pls
I love how Joyce is so awkward and oh my god please let don’t say that Joyce
I read Booster’s reply as. “Yup. Why do you think I’m here with all these queer folk? Did you think you were somehow NOT?”
I read it as a subtle indicator of the difference between gender and sexual preference, but Joyce doesn’t hear subtle.
Good point!
Joyce is still hearing the tapes in her head.
“How do you know I’m
madqueer?” saidAliceJoyce.“You must be,” said
the CatBooster, oryouI wouldn’t have come here.”We’re all here because we’re not all there.
Booster, you went right over Joyce’s head. Ya gotta be less subtle with her.
Naw, it’s more funny if she continues to be oblivious for now, and only realizes what they actually meant like 2 weeks later!
Bonus comic is just her suddenly sitting up in bed going “OH”
Laura, you read it how I read it.
…kiss Sarah 💅🏽.
Get it Lucy!
And honestly good for you too Jacob
Well.
Yeah. And then his immediately going right back to the white girl his mother DID approve of is not a great look.
Oh, well. What a shame. Moving on.
Thank you, zee.
Thank you for being so considerate over pronouns, too. I’m always grateful for that courtesy.
Yes, that was what I was saying. Just how it might look to Lucy. Sorry if I should have clarified better!
There were a bunch of factors in her dumping him. That was one. By itself it wouldn’t have been enough.
Which is good because damn, “We’ve been dating a couple weeks, have a full on confrontation with your abusive parents for me” is a huge ask.
I do. Poor guy was thrown away by one girl who had buried him under a pile of assumptions, into the arms of another girl who is shovelling furiously to do the same.
I guess Sarah and Walky will start the next wave of humanity after we inevitably cause our own destruction.
Such must have happened before. It would explain so much
All of this has happened before and it will all happen again. – JM Barrie
I reported you to help me sleep tonight.
Sweet dreams.
It’s fine. A comment needs, like, 3 reports before it even gets flagged, and even then, I think it just goes into a queue for Willis to check on.
Ok since no one else has said it yet
Damn you Willis
We have to save them up for when we really need them.
Why would we need them. Well. in Jacobs own words, he has a storied history of jealous girl friends. https://www.dumbingofage.com/2017/comic/book-7/02-everything-youve-ever-wanted/storied/ I believe he also said that he doesn’t put up with jealousy. At the same time, we’ve seen him flirt, and to a certain (perhaps unconscious) extent, lead girls on when he’s dating someone else. It’s not hard to suspect this is a pattern. Lucy may have more than she bargained for.
I believe you’ll find the correct form is
DAMN YOU WILLIS.
And the correcter form is “DAMN YOU WILLIS!!!,” while shaking your fist at the sky.
Well there goes that friendship!
I mean, it wasn’t much of a friendship.
I mean lets face it, if you have to pick one, and you basically do, Jacob’s frankly a much better use of your time.
Fair enough. I do think it’s kind of shitty to be all “I want to be Sarah’s friend” while you’re working on connecting with the guy she’s crushing on.
She never made it clear to Lucy that she liked Jacob though. They didn’t know each other well enough for Lucy to be privy to that.
Well, as someone who is a bit like Walky and Sarah, I do feel badly for them. But, Lucy and Jacob are two people who truly deserve each other.
In that they’re both kinda boring and will dull each other out of the strip?
In that they are both kind, charismatic in a laid-back way, and value themselves.
Yeah man, sometimes it’s nice to see compatible that are good for each other be happy together. It’s not rocket science.
Lucy is 2 of those 4 things. She’s a bit too selfish, immature and manipulative to be entirely kind and laid back.
Agreed, but I’m kind of hoping they end up exploding spectacularly because that’d be narratively interesting to watch. (Or that we get some “not everyone who smooches ends up in a relationship” rep in this comic again)
Yes, exactly that. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.
When did “feel bad” get replace by “feel badly?” As my high school English teacher liked to say, “You can only feel badly if you’re paralyzed or dead.”
*replaced*
Language evolves. People exist who do not speak English as a first language. If you can understand what they meant by what they said, you’re just being a smug jerk in “correcting” them.
This isn’t class, your teacher isn’t here, no one is grading this. It’s the real world and people talk how they talk.
Saying ‘Language evolves’ isn’t going to stop people exerting selection pressure on it.
So much we often don’t yet understand about ourselves and each other, in middle school!
Sarah ain’t ready yet and Walky fucking deserves it.
Should’ve known you was trouble from the first kiss
Had your eyes wide open, why were they open?
It’s like, how do you know that if your eyes weren’t also open?
yeah but bruno’s eyes were only ajar
Bruno has a jar for eyes?
fast forward to thirty years after The Ambiguous Now In Which Dumbing of Age takes place. none of the interns at the law firm understand why Ms. Clinton flies into a frothing rage on the first note of that one song by the old Earth musician Taylor Swift. all they know is four interns have been thrown out a window and nobody wants to be the fifth. maybe she just doesn’t like classic rock? who knows.
…Took me a while before I realized that Sarah’s last name was Clinton…
Oh no
It’s here
The Fuckening
Poor Sarah… I don’t disapprove of this pairing, and I feel like it might spur on Sarah growth (and I like Lucy and Jacob)… But man, a whole kiss happening right in front of her- either way it feels bad. She really did try her best :(. On a lighter note, I find it silly that Wally is saying that with Dorothy standing besides him haha.
That’s what I don’t understand, why did Walky say that?
and well, Dorothy knows what Walky is like.
I think that’s more of the awkward plus inadequacy. It’s not because it’s Lucy, it’s because it’s Jacob so maybe there’s a bit of insecurity there.
I would swear it’s Walky being snarky after Lucy was doing her two days thing.
I’ve been wrong before.
What we should really be asking is if Walky is about to walk into the frothy surf.
Only metaphorically.
The question is if this moment has changed Sarah’s mind about being a metaphorical obstacle course.
Sarah trying to be nice: I’ll invite Lucy!
Welp
Sarah: I did everything ! I was nice, I tried to have fun, I tried to be social, I was trying to be a better friend, and look where it fucking got me!
Organized.
Stop, stop! This is hurting more and more.
It is possible to make no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness, that is life.
Is there a good gender-neutral version of “Nice Guy Syndrome”? Because yeah, Sarah DOES seem to be spiraling in that direction, unfortunately.
Hurt people hurt people.
And it’s quite curious, because the moment Sarah moved away, Lucy was immediately at Jacob’s side.
And yes, it seems that she also tried to make Walky feel bad.
It really seems you are keen on seeing some kind of intentional manipulation on Lucy’s actions that is simply not there. She just started some music to defuse a tense situation and started talking to a hot guy she got along with before. It’s really that simple.
It is a dorm room. There isn’t very much distance available, particularly with so many people in it.
Does Lucy know about Sarah’s complicated relationship with Jacob? I don’t remember her ever being aware of it.
It seems there was something here.
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2024/comic/book-14/03-trystin-in-the-wind/mundanelyoccurring/
Iiiii’m not sure I’d count that. Yeah, Lucy might’ve been able to infer from that, but eh
Lucy was invited by Sarah*
Because words are hard you see.
If Lucy did do this out of spite, which I’m not at all sure of, it completely clashes with her repeated statements about wanting to stay in this friend group and befriend Sarah specifically.
Ethan (witnessing Sarah’s dismayed reaction) : Ok I guess this is where someone dies now.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT DIDN’T WORK
#gimmethebeatboysintensifies

“Drift away-hay!”
Looks like it worked fine; you just didn’t put anything inside the anchor tag.
Lol, Booster is throwing shade. There are (excluding them) at least what? 4 confirmed queer people here, not counting any Joyce/Dorothy/Walky obliviousness.
Ethan, Dina, Becky, Danny, Asher I count 5
Ah, I forgot about Danny (which feels topical).
Danny…? Does not ring a bell.
He’s the guy with the hat and ukelele
Pretty sure Walky isn’t oblivious. He hasn’t dated any guys that we’re aware of (possibly because of what his mother would say/do) but he’s implied here and there that it’s not off the table.
Last we checked, Booster liked Amber. Too bad they didn’t get to see Amber at this party. Probably for the best, as Amber is drunk.
I don’t know any reason Booster can’t still see Amber at this party, considering I think they’re both still there.
Out of line of sight, though.
Hmm.
This is an interesting development, but feels kind of wild on Jacob’s part. Like what the hell was the “I really like your arms” encounter, then, if he isn’t interested in her? Is this just like, totally casual then, or was he outright leading Sarah on?
Yeah I was hoping for that to be cleared up before anything, but we know what we’re reading TT.TT
Maybe from his POV it feels like Sarah is playing with him.
But he wanted to keep talking and she left.
yeah she panicked and bolted, but it wasn’t “when she found out he didn’t need to be drunk to talk about feelings.” her panicking wasn’t really about him at all. that’s the part i’m talking about.
Anyway, my point wasn’t “this isn’t difficult to read” or “this isn’t a thing he should be more conscious of”, just “this isn’t leading someone on” it’s regular human behavior.
cheating OR leading someone on. I used the wrong word, but I stand by either version.
I mean, he literally was a sex addict in a previous Willis universe
Lucy on her protagonist arc. Good for her.
What’s the opposite of buying a lottery ticket? Starting a savings account? I guess I should do that cause I lost big today. It’s fine. Sarah will recover and find someone taller and more ripped, and with an objectively better haircut! And he’ll have blackjack and hookers! Just as soon as Willis introduces more dudes into the cast.
yes, you go Sarah
(I hope so)
“Utterly repulsive” Holy shit what a weird thing to say about such an inofensive character. Did Malaya made this comment?
I have dated a girl almost exactly like lucy in the past and it was the second worst relationship i ever had. So i will admit that some of the hate if feel for the comic character is due to social ptsd but that doesn’t change the utter repulsion and disgust i feel seeing her.
Yeah, something going down in the Lucy/Jacob/Raidah region of the social landscape is the most fertile opportunity for drama in this ship, so that does feel likely.
Hm.
Damn Lucy moves fast. Or was that Jacob?
It takes two to dance.
Remembers a lot of solo dancing and wishes he used a better metaphor, but is too lazy to change it now.
I mean, it’s classically “two to tango”.
True.
On the other hand it was 1:15 AM for me and on the third hand https://learndance.co.uk/2020/06/15/solo-tango-online-dance-routine/
It’s those details that make you wonder if all that maturity speech that Lucy gave in previous strips was really about genuine maturity.
Come to think of it, was Lucy aware that Sarah had feelings for Jacob?
What was that speech?
No she didn’t know about Sarah’s feelings. And what does this have to did with maturity?
It’s perfectly notmal to like both a range of personalities and a range of physicalities!
And that’s how Lucy died.
Lucy isn’t in this strip. Just look at the tags.
And now she is. Nevermind.
And he also apologized for it being so soon.
yikes
MisterJin judging a woman by impossible standards? who would have thunk it.
Its just for Lucy it doesn’t make sense.
you’ve been banned for misogyny before.
The only thing I don’t understand is why Walky is affected if he finally apologized.
At least Dorothy knows that Walky expresses himself that way.
Walky is not upset. He is being snarky.
If he were actually upset, he wouldn’t be saying this to Dorothy.
he’s drunk
Apologizing doesn’t mean he’s over it though. You can still feel pain or a sense of loss. And he might be having a bit of well deserved empathy by seeing what ut feels like for his ex to move on so aggressively and easily from him. For walky its probably his first time experiencing something like that.
Yo. I don’t like Lucy x Jacob either but this read seems a tad harsh.
“With a guy she barely knows”
Oh noooo, an unattached college-age woman is smooching an unattached college-aged man she finds attractive. Where are my pearls? I need to clutch them!
Extreme personality change? She is acting how she always has, she just decided to have more confidence and self respect.
She spent months not making a move on Walky. She’s making one on Jacob in minutes.
It’s a big change.
Oh dang, I guess Lucy just kinda went for it.
This outcome is proper, just, and delightful.
joyce is gonna have to reconsider that statement in the context of her lesbian best friend and her gay ex bf and her other best friend’s at-least-bicurious-given-past-dialogue bf and also her bicurious relationship with that best friend that’s queerly obvious to everyone except her
not sure if walky has reason to be disappointed here, he showed up with a date who is also his ex.
Huh. Wonder why Booster is gravitating to Walky and Joyce.
huh!
huh !
The only good/bad thing about the medium of comics is that we can’t see Sarah in a Hitchcock zoom.
What a hypocrite, she shouldn’t have cared about the few days thing then
is it that hypocritical? Lucy didn’t go up to walky and dorothy and tell them they had to stop. She had an emotional reaction to seeing walky with dorothy, and the two of them immediately started to try to apologize for it. She explained her feelings, which I think is a natural thing to do in that context. It would’ve been hypocritical if she called Walky bad person, but I don’t think that was her intention.
Yeah. That’s how feelings work 100%
Moving past an emotion and experiencing a different one makes you a hypocrite now, apparently. More incredible takes from the local MENSA members.
Once upon a time, many many years ago I tried to decide whether I wanted to join a local MENSA group or a local Science Fiction group. I decided the Science Fiction group had cuter girls.
Yes, I subsequently realized I could have joined both. But no-one said I was smart.
I laughed.
I think she wasn’t so much upset with Walky as with their relationship itself, for turning out to be less than what she’d assumed it was.
Whats this!
There comes drama with steel chair.
Watch out watch out
Oooooh
GO LUCY, YOU GOT THIS
On one hand we have happiness refound and on the other is the heartbreak felt round the world.
But it doesn’t always work that way, does it…
Lol @ liz gravatar
Again: I think this party’s going to end up with Sarah seeing Lucy like a little sister.
Just walk away Sarah, don’t torture yourself.
why stop now?
Which part of Sarah’s life isn’t her torturing herself?
yeah I was rooting for sarah and jacob but always had a gut feeling it wouldn’t happen.
Well said, Sirksome
how can he be not over Lucy if he was never into her in the first place?
He wasn’t claiming to be head over heels in love with her (which is a point in his favour) but he still liked her plenty. Plus I get the impression that Lucy’s “you’re not good enough for me” breakup speech kicked him in his already low self esteem, and that it’s still smarting.
You and your silly absolutism.
I was going to say, Walky’s insecurities are more material than the comic he’s in
That’s my read re: Walky but I’m not confident on it either.
I have to read this as Walky snark. If Walky was actually upset about Lucy rebounding, I think you’d see a reaction out of Dorothy.
She’s still hearing it. Patience.
It’s one kiss, whatever. Lucy should get even worse. Grab his dick through his pants, put his hand under her shirt, why not just go hog wild?
Not till the third date. They have standards.
womp womp
Actually, Jacob is rejecting Lucy. This is how he rejects people.
This gave me a good laugh; kudos 👏
Oh another brick for my Lucy is Joyce without main character armor theory
Lucy: wow walky moved on after 2 days?
Jacob: moves on from Sarah after 1 Taylor Swift song.
Jacob and Sarah were flirting, not dating. Him kissing Lucy now is not called “moving on” that’s called “being single and not in the 1800s”.
Flirtation and interest are legally binding contracts that permanently tie you to that person. Jacob is blatantly cheating on Sarah.
I feel like I should screenshot various comment threads and then do “This is a fandom” in the style of Childish Gambino.
“Don’t catch you shippin’ now.”
Side note: It’s hard to believe these two aren’t drunk, this is like their second time meeting…but screw it, whirlwind romances seem to work well and stick around here.
Narrator: wirlwund relationships don’t work out in dumbing of Age, but perhaps this one will be different.
I’ve been looking at this all wrong actually. If things develop past a kiss and they start dating then that’s a good thing for Lucy x Jacob haters. Relationships inevitably lead to drama and I will relish every moment their seemingly perfect on paper romance fumbles until the day they’re married.
That just gonna make me love them more then because it means I get to see different facets of their characters and how they react to conflicts!
Not being tagged hurts more than blowing your shot, yanno.
Whoever’s voting for “a sock” in the poll, I hope your shoes squeak when stepping on floors
Dude, socks are hot, yo’…
*That being an implied gender-neutral “dude”. Synonym for “Yo’.”
I voted based on what I feel is most likely. Between Lucy, Sarah, and a sock, I genuinely think the sock has a better chance of touching Jacob’s dick “tonight” than either of the women.
Maybe some people just decided “a sock” would be funny XD
Lol, “calculator”. I meant “calculated”.
Jacob also appeared to be flirting with Joyce for weeks without realizing it, so we’ve got to factor that in to impressions of what he was doing.
OTOH, she could just be oblivious to Sarah’s interest.
ok, I know that Walky cared about his relationship with Lucy after all, but why would the sight of his ex kissing her make him feel like he wanted to go to the vastness of the ocean next to his new friend with benefits?
secondly, I didn’t expect Jacob to be the type who kisses during the first dance, the previous strips didn’t really suggest it
He knows Sarah was into him and can see her expression. He feels responsible for damaging several people in a row.
Dorothy and Walky are back together (they discussed and agreed to it) so “friends with benefits” is a weird way to describe it.
I don’t see Dorothy and Walky lasting much longer.
That doesn’t change what they currently are.
Yes, Joyce, that’s why they’re here.
Joyce hurt (her case for being totally heterosexual) in her confusion!
joyce think before you speak
or dont actually its hilarious
exactly
never start thinking joyce
except maybe about, well, you know who
Sarah 😭😭😭
🫂🫂🫂
You had how many chances Sarah? The only person you can blame here is yourself.
And yet, somehow, it will turn out that she can also blame Lucy.
Maybe she SHOULDN’T be able to, but I think she’ll be able to.
Yeah that’s looking quite likely
Blame this blame that, what a boring way to see the world. Drink some water.
Personally, I blame the Fluoride in the water.
Drink your fluoride, kids. It’ll make you big and strong.
The children are too big and strong now! There are kaiju battles on the playgrounds. STOP DRINKING YOUR FLUORIDE KIDS!
So it goes.
Sarah needed to learn she will lose things if she refuses to budge from her little hovel of isolation.
Does anyone else feel like Booster’s response was less “Yes I know” and more “I’m looking forward to the day you apply this to yourself”?
Those were the two interpretations I was wavering between.
Does anyone here remember any other indications that Booster knows about Joyce or Dorothy’s feelings?
Booster (claims to) have a very high insight skill. They can read people.
Oh! I missed that but you’re completely correct.
I guess joyce hasn’t talked to ethan yet/know that he and asher hooked up
*Chaikovski’s 1812 Overture intensifies*
If it’s any consolation Sarah. Jacob isn’t with Raidah.
We are probably just not seeing every sentence they’re saying to each other. The comic is moving around a lot.
Aww, sad Sarah. Time to give up on eveything.
Snooze*, you lose, Sarah.
* and by “snooze”, I mean “loudly choke on every chance Jacob gave you talk to him like an adult.”
Yeah you understand high five!
naahh thats hella foul… she said all that about walky and how she knew he was a good guy cuz blah blah. but she turns around and does something like that “mildy drunk” (after saying she holds herself better after rooming with billy and malaya) not only that but to actively go after jacob after the only reason for her being there is because Sarah wanted her to be there as a form of being a better person/friend, WHILE knowing Sarah actively is trying to work up the courage to talk/pursue Jacob is a massive backstab.
It’s not a backstab if you do it in front of them.
touche lol
LUCY GOT THE TOUCH
SHE GOT THE POWERRR
I don’t listen to Swift so I had to google the lyrics to go… oh those are very poignant right now.
Well played.
I’ve waited so long but at last we’ve gotten the first signs.
It’s eventually happening guys!
SARAH X WALKY
Quickly, someone hide all the cutlery and the bats!
holy shit, they really are getting DRUNK drunk….i mean, those aren’t the right lyrics! it’s “please don’t BE in love with someone else”, not “fall in love”! get it together, guys!
She met someone she liked, they hit it off, and they kissed. And the fact that she’s newly out of a relationship? She might be giving that more consideration if he were not here with his ex.
Sarah’s gonna be fine.
She’ll be fine.
There won’t be any long-term consequences I’m sure.
The ironic thing is that Jacob and Lucy are only here because Sarah invited them both. So, good job, Sarah, on reaching out? Or, maybe, no good deed goes unpunished.
Is this where Sarah Rebounds with Walky?
Please let this be where Sarah rebounds with Walky, i could use a good laugh
I’m honestly crossing my fingers for Sarah x Booster if the Lucy x Jacob thing progresses to anything other than a kiss.
Booster would love a partner as complex as Sarah and I’d love for them both to get more screen time.
Also more Carla x Charlie, while we’re making wishes.
Are people here defending Walky? Why?
I haven’t seen any comments doing that. I’m not sure what he even needs defending about.
….. wow, so, uh, Raidah’s future beef with Lucy being the possible reason for Jennifer’s break from that group was not on my bingo card.
Something about the breakup and the awkward start of the party with Walky has allowed Lucy to reach the Avatar State and I’m here for it.
The breakup, the awkward start of the party with Walky, and the alcohol.
It was explicitly stated on-panel that Lucy has only consumed 1.5/3rd metric centisips of alcohol. She ain’t barely buzzed.
This is having a tiny part of my brain that still experiences childlike wonder to think ancient Chinese alchemy might be onto something and that I should ingest various mercury compounds
You’re not supposed to do that unless it’s springtime.
Y-you do realise that when people break up they are no longer in a relationship… right?
No wait, sod it. I fully support this. Shame on Lucy. SHAME!
What’s this, the Kitchen Sink theory of dating? 🙂
I don’t think she’s cheating on Sarah unless we count that Joyce pulled out the… “lightsaber” once
Damn it I forgot to mention Liz stole Sarah’s boyfriend, which is the more damning connection than implied siblinghood.
Subtly implied with little hints like “This is my sister”.
[applause]
It did not click for me what your gravatar was until I was reading this comment.
You go hard, and I respect this.
My grav game is unmatched.
Sad for Sarah – she was finally trying, and here’s where things are now.
But I’m very, very happy for Lucy and Jacob. They’re both good people who deserve to be with good people.
Raidah is going to srsly need to think about why she keeps losing Jacob to good people (spoiler alert: she won’t).
hooooly shit that escalated quickly
Poor Dorothy.
If she didn’t expect a guy who just got broken up with two days ago to still have some messy feelings that’d be super weird.
Showing interest is not signing a blood oath, though.
Hell yeah go for it Lucy! Sorry Sarah, let’s be honest it was unlikely it was gonna work for out you two even if you DID started dating.
How dare they connect on a personal level without any pretenses. The absolute nerve.
No need to be hostile
I wasn’t being hostile, I was genuinely baffle about what you said because it was very dumb. See now that is being hostile.
Geez, if this is the community here, you just helped make the decision for me. Just deleted the bookmark for this site.
Cool! 😊
Very sorry to see you go, I feel like the comments section here has gotten pretty terrible over the past few months.
Can we not?
Okay, see ya tomorrow.
It’s not really a drama tag until someone in the comments threatens to never-ever-ever come back.
Booster. Booster, Booster. Yer bein’ too subtle for these folks. Ya gotta hit ’em over the head with the lead pipe, see.
Alas, farewell Lucy, we hardly knew ye.
Good thing there are no chandeliers nearby for Sarah to drop.
Truly an excellent vintage of interpersonal drama you’ve developed here, Willis
Honestly, good fod Lucy. Sarah treated Jacob like a hunk of meat. It was never going to be a good relationship. Lucy and Jacob are matched better in personality.
googled “walk into the sea” to see if there was some kind of pop culture thing I was missing, and now google has me on a suicide watch…
Odysseus’s mom, is that you?
To be fair Lucy first met Jacob when Sarah was running away from an interaction with him so I think she did get some hints about her feelings.
Have you meet Sarah? Thinking she is running from regular social interaction is completely in character.
Very true though usually she isn’t doing it at full sprint
I point out the precedent of “It’s My Party And I’ll Cry If I Want To.”
Booster is apt for analysis…
I think the “out of character” bit may just be rebound energy for Lucy. Throwing herself into something she wouldn’t normally have the confidence for, but using her emotions over the breakup to drive her.
Yeeaaahh she may not have the drunk bubbles, but Lucy IS intoxicated and still in a social setting with her very recent ex and his very recent renewed partnership. Those kinda things tend to make folks act out of character.
No, there’s never any binding vow of not being a jerk, but it doesn’t make you not a jerk just because you didn’t sign an oath not to be a jerk
You are weird.
Honestly, when you started out with “I’m shocked by some of the comments here and their lack of empathy and nuance,” I thought this was going to go the other way.
Right?!
Jacob what the fuck
Whats Walky’s issue here? He broke it off and he is standing right there with Dorothy, for whom he broke it off for.
Walky did not break it off. She broke up with him. His issue is it’s still a tender thing and he definitely still has SOME feelings for her even if he’s started to move on. He’s also several drinks in and they’re in a space that’s probably like 15’x15′ at best.
I don’t think he’s moved on. This kinda shows how fragile this rebound with Dorothy is. She saw him get jealous. She probably feels used.
She probably understands how he feels and has empathy for him, because she knows him better than all that.
Dorothy shouldn’t settle for Walky.
That’s a completely different line of thought and it’s not a worthwhile thread to follow.
Used how? Dorothy actively pursued him.
I don’t personally care about Lucy one way or another, but the amount of hate feels like I’m listening to people talk about Tashi Duncan.
I’m old, and not up on Modern Dating, but . . . whatever happened to “you snooze, you lose?” If this is no longer applicable, a lot of guys at the local bar owe me restitution for going home with the guy I was flirting with.
Camarón que se duerme se lo lleva la corriente.
Yeah Dorothy got straight afterthought-Ed by the Walkster
It’s not a good look, Walky m’boy 😒
Oh, well.
FWIW though you make a good point that Dorothy is generally very empathetic and probably understands her boy is going off in the heat of the moment.
Hey Jacob is NOT a himbo that requires being all 3: Dumb, swole and kind. He is only the last two so he doesn’t qualify, get your facts straight!/j
Which, according to The Chart, would make Jacob A Hunk
This was not obvious?
Yeah, I adore Sarah but this has been extremely heavily foreshadowed.
OH GOD THE DUMBING OF AGE
Barbossa voice: you best start believing in queer parties Joyce, you’re in one!
I have never been so happy for Lucy and Jacob, I hope this works for them.
Joyce is trying to be helpful/supportive but… insert “confused but got the spirit” meme here
And I think Booster understands and appreciates that she’s at least trying. And that goes a long way.
What are parties for, if not riding some good vibes and kissing some new faces?
That said — Jacob, you can do better.
It’s not official till Booster says it.
With the caveat that his pool is limited to characters we’ve seen in the comic, … can he?
Waiting for this leading to Lucy bringing her new boyfriend to Raidah’s next lunch without either Raidah or Jacob knowing the other is involved.
That would be hilarious, but Lucy only got invited because Raidah was trying to reel in Walky as part of her plan to isolate Sarah and Joyce. So an invite to Lucy would be surprising.
I mean, assuming Raidah knows that Lucy/Walky split up when she makes the invite, sure.
This. Exactly this.
Thank you.
*siiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*
Just to clarify, I voted for “a sock.”
I’m shocked sock didn’t win.
But it’s nice that you considered the socks feelings too.
Walky is being selfless. The only way Sarah avoids walking into the sea herself is if Walky is hanging out there first.
Anyway, this is her origin story. Maybe not supervillain, but this is yet another defining moment right there.
It’s going to be hilarious seeing Jacob cockblocked and frustrated
heart breaking for sarah but also kind of pleased for lucy/bummed for dorothy that walky’s so jealous
This is all Taylor Swift’s fault.
At last. Something we can all agree on.
I feel bad for Sarah.
I don’t and strips like this: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2023/comic/book-13/04-but-dont-give-yourself-away/treat/
Are why
The one where Sarah got upset and hit back because Lucy popped off about something she had one-sided, surface-level information about but used as a weapon anyway?
How dare she.
Yikes. Fair.
On a different note, I agree with Nymph. Lucy was not being a great person in the previous strips.
Over 420 comments!!!! You know what that means!!!! *^-^*
BLAZE IT!!!!
*plays “Atomic Dog” on hacked muzak*
This development rules and everyone trying to frame this as some Machiavellian amount of manipulation on Lucy’s part is being extremely weird about pretty straightforward human behaviour.
Hear hear!
Yes
Machiavellian? Nah… I just have NEVER liked that character, she gives me the ick.
Sorry Sarah… you snooze, you lose. And you snoozed. So you… losed? Loozed?
It’s funny but…Sarah is my favorite character, but I don’t think there’s any way she’d end up with Jacob. Their personalities don’t really mesh IMO and she had been super weird to him. Lucy is like perfect for him. I was trying to think of what existing character would actually mesh with Sarah and it was hard especially since so many are already paired off–but I thought Booster actually would work since they are both so snarky and weird about people in their own ways lol
No, Walky, she’s not rebounding. She’s upgrading.
Why is Walky upset that he’s now off the guilt train? Everybody (but Sarah) seems to be winning here. It’s a party. You like goofing off. I’m so confused and a few days late to the party.
Snorted out loud at Booster’s last comment. Convinced they’re the only one who knows they’re in a comic strip 😂
