Her ex who very recently rejected her after she told him to hook up with another girl who’d be good for him but that relationship imploded, only to later turn around and beg him to dump his girlfriend for her.
I don’t think Walky would dare tell her that he broke up with Lucy, but if not, it’s very intriguing to think that Dorothy would explode over something that she herself proposed.
While that’s true, he still isn’t 100% sure and honestly I don’t think Lucy is either. I just hope this doesn’t turn into Ross…. Walky wouldn’t even understand the reference due to Friends being left behind my the sliding timeline.
I watched that show at the time… and yeah, that was stupid. Like, if you want to put your relationship on pause, don’t rely on a single, easily misunderstood buzz word. Explain your needs and make certain that the rules are laid out and understood. I hate Ross, but Rachel being angry at him because she was unclear about whether or not she was dumping him was not cool. There are so many other, better reason to hate him.
Gods, looking back, that show was such a trash fire. I hate that bits of it still live in my head rent free.
Walky doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who would’ve watched Friends even at the height of its popularity.
(But then, this is coming from someone who, to this day, has not seen a single entire episode of Friends from start to finish, nor has any desire to do so, so what do I know.)
The amusing thing is that when Dorothy and Walky went on break, he made the Friends reference, but that was 6 years ago, so sliding time line wise maybe he wouldn’t now?
Yes that and being told that her dream job as President of the United States was being a war criminal (don’t recall who said that). Yeah, poor Dorothy is not okay
That is to say, while Raidah sucks and the statement was definitely made in bad faith…. It’s also not really incorrect. Being a successful politician would require Dorothy compromise on her morals a lot, and specifically being president would mean the buck ultimately stops at her for every immoral thing that the country *would* do under her jurisdiction regardless of how happy with those actions she actually is personally.
This is all stuff she’d never really considered because it’s a childhood dream that she’s been pursuing as long as she can remember and until college rapidly disabused her of the notion, I think there was genuinely a part of her who saw herself as competent enough to fix literally every problem in the US within 4-8 years.
I feel like she was so focused on getting there she wasn’t entirely sure what she would do once she did it. Beyond “all the good I can” I mean. Which is nice but also sadly not enough.
I for one fully support Dorothy’s plan of trying to be president. There are better and worser presidents, so as long as there are presidents let’s have Dorothy.
Will she commit war crimes? Probably. Will many, many people legitimately hate her guys? Definitively. Will she get assassinated? Quite possibly, in fact the less of a garbage president she is the more lilely that becomes. She should do it anyway.
If her only goal in every government position she gets is to use that position to get her a higher office, she will be a garbage president, and will have been garbage in all those other offices too.
“All the President’s Guys” will be the book about Dorothy’s campaign officials doing crimes in order to win an election, on her instruction.
yeh i mean sure, APAB.
then again there’s no way someone like Dorothy becomes president, like, really. like Jennifer said, she’s a future judge or parliamentary assistant or journalist or something.
Dorothy would still make a better president than Trump.
And by that, I mean the fictional character of Dorothy Keener, who only exists in this webcomic and not out here in reality, would still make a better president, out here in reality, than Trump. Like, just a print out of an image of Dorothy, doing absolutely nothing but sitting framed on the President’s desk in the Oval Office for four whole years, would still be a better alternative than having Trump in there again for four more years.
It would be good for Dorothy to reestablish some friendships that don’t revolve around Joyce, from her comment it sounds like Joyce was her only motivation for showing up.
It happens. You get together with a group of people, and you seem like friends, but the friend who brought you in leaves/changes, and suddenly, you start to realize you have nothing in common with everyone else in the group except that one friend who’s moved on.
No, it was built on a big ass and the willingness to bang anything in a Lakers uniform. Now she’s like a fucking paragon of momhood and people give a shit about her opinion. WTG ‘Merka.
I’ve definitely heard queer folx use the term “bone” to refer to sex when there were no penises involved. Source: is a queer afab person who spends a significant chunk of my time at a downtown sex club lol 😆
yeah but there’s just something that bothers her seeing Joyce with Joe. Something. Who knows what it could be. Probably just that he was a bit of a dick very recently. I’m sure that’s all it is and nothing else

I don’t think he does. The way he rejected her before and their general interactions before and after seem to indicate that even if (at the time) it didn’t seem like he was into Lucy, he was definitely over Dorothy
You can be “over” someone in terms of breaking up, and still care about them; especially in a situation like Walky’s and Dorothy’s where they didn’t break up because they didn’t love each other anymore. Instead they broke up because the relationship was interfering with Dorothy’s plan to go to Yale. Now that Dorothy has all but rejected Yale, she might want to pick things up with Walky. Walky wasn’t interested in dating Dorothy while he was dating Lucy, but he might want to now that things with Lucy blew up.
Don’t think Walky knows she’s rejected Yale, though? As far as he knows, he still has every reason to not be the thing that stops her from chasing/achieving her dream(s).
Warning this is some straight up word salad bc idk how editorialize myself
First of all, yes there is, using conventional beauty standards of the setting as a measurement. It’s a simple acknowledgement that a certain collective of features is going to be perceived as attractive by most people. People who are considered sex symbols are objectively attractive for their time period even though i subjectively think most of them are mid.
Second, they didn’t say walky is objectively attractive. They said Dina and Becky can look at him objectively and conclude he’s attractive. Different things. It means they can look at him and stepping away from their own personal viewpoints, knowing their friends and his exes, and honestly just having an aesthetic appreciation for the human form without sexual attraction. And with all that they can conclude that he would be attractive to other people, even though they could never be sexually attracted to him.
I’m really over Dorothy being a dick about Joe. Regardless of his past he is SHOWING his commitment to treating Joyce as more than just a sex object.
And now I’m wondering if this is going to end with Dorothy “realizing” she’s into Joyce and that’s why she’s so adamant that Joyce not date Joe. I’ll be so disappointed if that’s the case.
Ehh, I can understand her taking a while to accept him. It hasn’t been that long in-comic since he started changing, and they went to the same high school. He’s been a gross hornball for 95% of the time she’s known him.
Me too, but I think it’s very hasty on the part of Dina and Becky to believe that Walky will fix this, if so, I hope Dorothy listens to him, because this obsession with Joyce is not helping her at all.
I hope this ends with Walky *not* chasing after her for the bone zone, and Dotty watching Danny zooming off on the back of Sal’s motorcycle to go get Ihop.
The way she treats people just rubs me in all the wrong ways, and the conga line of consequences has a ways to go yet.
It’s a interesting phenomenon where Dorothy is living through the iconic saying of “you either die the hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain, where she’s come to the probable conclusion that she could have everything she’s worked her entire life for if it means being willing to become the 4th horseman of the apocalypse if required to.
And everyone’s solution to cheering her up is telling her to get laid. As if post hank panky clarity is supposed to help with that.
“Overcharging” is probably Famine viewed through US Wendy’s recerntly deciding to try this new thing called “variable pricing to charge more when busier”
–Dave, i see no possible way this could go wrong^{tm JDN}
Surge pricing is bullshit. You know the workers aren’t getting a cut, and nobody wants to pay $20 for a fucking combo meal just because there’s 3 cars in front of them.
Fun fact: only one of the Horsemen is actually named: the Fourth, who is Death.
The Third is this one:
I looked, and behold, a black horse; and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; but do not damage the oil and the wine.”
You’ll note the lack of mention to how much wheat and barley he actually has available, just the prices he charges. Dude’s just pulling the same trick as the De Beers cartel pulls with diamonds: there’s no scarcity of the things, they’re just sitting on all the supply so they can charge whatever they want.
That’s not Famine, that’s Overcharging (and it rhymes well with that earlier episode where Jesus just whips a bunch of merchants for overcharging for sacrificial animals).
Dorothy, dear, stop lying to your therapist. At this point I think it’s more likely that Joe ends up murdered by Dorothy rather than Sarah, even though both of them think they’re doing it for “Joyce’s sake”
Look, Dorothy is almost certainly sexually frustrated, but that is not her primary problem right now. She’s disillusioned with what she thought was her life’s goal, conflicted about pursuing it, particularly with an available option in the form of transferring to Yale, while also torn between that and her close friendship/other-things-because-people-are-complicated with Joyce that she doesn’t want to abandon.
Oh, not to mention, you know, the whole PTSD from the kidnapping thing that she’s struggling to handle.
Getting 50ccs of hot beef injection would likely cheer her up for a bit and put her in a better mood, but it’s not actually going to fix anything that’s actually wrong here.
Though, statically, Walky is packing more than 50ccs of hot beef (the average is penis about 168ccs, while the average thermos of beef soup significantly more voluminous still).
I met Zach at a comics convention once. I taught him some trigonometry and in exchange he drew a picture of me wearing a top hat and riding a mammoth. He’s cool.
Yes and no. She’s no longer on the “I need to yell at Joe and Joyce until they break up” track but she still explicitly showed up today to discourage Joyce and her dialogue about Joyce not needing untangling (because she doesn’t know that Joyce stayed up all night terrified about cuddling Joe) while Joe does leans towards “You need to get some platonic hugs. Platonic, not romantic. Not with Joyce. Go hug Danny, far away from here.”
She definitely still has issues with Joe, though they’ve barely come up in this scene. She’s not comfortable with their relationship, but she did give it her blessing awhile back.
I know Dorothy just made a statement that suggests she’s going down a track that leads directly to screaming into her phone in a car wearing Oakleys and claiming it’s a podcast, but have you seen this shit Becky’s saying? It’s unforgivable. I demand she be written out of the story, Willis. I DEMAND it.
To be clear, you’re suggesting that Becky’s claim that not everything about science is unforgiveable, yes? Hard agree.
If Dorothy threw her morals by the wayside she wouldn’t be the one recording Facebook manifestos, she’d be a corrupt bureaucrat somewhere in government, maybe Congress.
Also, for the record, I mean to suggest Dorothy is going down the incel stalker Facebook manifesto tech tree, not the suburban neo-fascist one. The incel stalker version of the tree doesn’t require the morality drop.
(You’re spot on that evil mirror Dotty would be an evil bureaucrat, though. Hell, she could probably headhunt Raidah’s dream lawyer job right in front of her, if she had the mind to and the lack of morals.)
I’d say that being an incel does require a morality dump. If you have empathy and understand you are not entitled to people’s time or attention, you likely won’t be going “But you’re supposed to sleep with me, I paid you attention!”
I missed the second half of your comment. Watching Dorothy dunk on both Raidah and Sarah at the same time (while possibly scooping up Jacob, just for the double whammy) would be incredible.
Maybe Dorothy can seriously reevaluate her own needs and long term goals now that Joyce has made it clear shes serious about Joe. Seems she started hyperfixating on her friends issues atleast in part to ignore her own.
Exactly, it has not been seen that she has any real time for herself other than just studies.
Something that I liked about his relationship with Walky because at least he seemed to relax a little more, I know I shouldn’t say “they came back”, because who knows how Walky will express himself and how Dorothy will take it.
Ok, the fact that she speaks naturally with Walky suggests there were no serious repercussions at karaoke, but Dina and Becky assume that Walky is the right choice. well…
Yes, I still love the ship, but how would Dorothy react if Walky took a wrong step?
First the rejection and suddenly saying in such a calm way “I broke up with Lucy”, that honestly worries me, I know that Walky’s progress has been good, but here he should have measured his words very well, but let’s be honest, this obsession with Joyce It’s not a good thing and the fact that Dorothy hates Joe only makes us learn more about her past.
I know we can’t take things for granted, but I hope Dorothy doesn’t take it out on Walky in a cruel way.
Hey, good observation, it is possible that she varied with different songs, but of course, talking about her condition.
That even attracted so much attention that it possibly impressed Sal, that could give the opportunity for greater interaction between those two (my favorites from the comic) and perhaps a new hobby or a possible new goal would be discovered.
I object to the classification of chopped liver as a paté. Patés are generally chopped or ground and mixed raw, then cooked, while chopped liver is cooked and then chopped into a rougher consistency. Difference between egg salad and a fritatta.
Not blended to a paste, but still spreadable. It depends on the chopping technique and the preferences of the preparer, but 3 mm is within the range. There are hard-boiled eggs and onions, similarly chopped.
A Bubbie making chopped liver? Wait hang on…Dorothy’s ethnically Jewish?! Suddenly things are making sense. She’s making smartass remarks and feeling guilty and anxious about everything. She’d fit in with my family at least.
I’d remembered that she had 3 Catholic grandparents and 1 Jewish, but the most specific I can find is https://www.dumbingofage.com/socialist/, so I probably misremembered.
Nana is her Irish Catholic grandmother (mentioned in a bonus strip).
I wonder if perhaps Walky is going to assume that he and Lucy are officially broken up, go to support Dorothy (hem hem), then get caught in some way by Lucy who hasn’t been entirely clear and didn’t think they were fully broken up
There are three possible solutions
1) magic of sex
2) magic of weed
3) personal realization after deep self-examination, putting aside childhood fantasies, and accepting that she is ordinary but capable of trying to do the things she thinks have values. And also to learn to study right.
It’s the sort of thing I would expect it from Becky, but not Dina, so this strip really surprised me! I think Dina’s understanding of how horny other people are has recently been a bit skewed by her girlfriend, for better or worse.
Orgasms are no more a solution to Dorothy’s problems than alcohol was. She needs actual mental health care and before she can get that she needs to acknowledge that she has a serious, ongoing problem that she cannot fix herself.
This might take a while. “Rock bottom” is a myth, but you still have to be willing to admit that you’re not coping, and Dorothy’s particular issue is really tied up with her inability to admit that, ever.
I’d like to imagine the High Queen Sorceress of capitalism as a cross between Uncle Sam and Rita Repulsa. She is perpetually engulfed in a swirling orb of cash and holds a scepter that ends in a golden bust of Adam Smith.
Yep the current King Sorcerer of Capitalism is aiding and abetting genocide, it’s very cool
Anyway as the man who just set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy wrote: “Many of us like to ask ourselves, ‘What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?’ The answer is: you’re doing it. Right now.”
Not sure if those things mesh well together Dotty, the Merchant Princes of Amn certainly thought so and weren’t fans of people who could just conjure up money. You could maybe be a Sorceress Queen of Capitalism in Potterverse, Rowling was bad at economics anyway so it might work out.
At this point is it really a exaggeration that aiming to be president under certain circumstance is a Guarantee that you’re going to involve yourself in some really evil shit.
I assume you’re using “politics” here as a shorthand for mainstream electoral politics, though even then that assessment i think is a bit silly.
But politics generally is just another word for the diverse ways of handling conflicting interests within human communities. In that sense, dismissing politics is just unacknowledged privilege.
Politics is just a thing that happens when humans.
I’d like to add that the acknowledgement of privilege isn’t a complete moral condemnation of a person’s entire existence, and anyone who treats it as such is being silly.
Fellows, let me put it this way. I thought politicians were backstabbing shits before. Now the ruling party lost power in my country and the new ruling party is uncovering a scandal that makes your Watergate look like a kiddie slap fight.
Politics is a world of backstabbing and climbing over each other for power and position.
Politics is Shit
so you did mean mainstream electoral politics. i don’t know anything about Polish politics. but isn’t a…good thing that PiS lost the elections? i only know them as pushing restrictions on abortion (bordering on total prohibition if i’m not mistaken) and anti-LGBT positions. obviously that’s a narrow lens though.
Yup, Poland and yeah they lost the elections mostly because they really pissed people of, the abortion ban being a big contributor. Problem is, one more won elections and they’d probably turn us into another Hungary. What most people probably don’t know is that they were really messing with the juidical system trying to turn it into a party tool.
That’s not my point though, it’s not about the system working or not. It’s about politics being dirty in general. Filled with people who will tell any lie and pull any shit to get power and money. I have a local example when there were mayor elections and the winner won because he slandered the old mayor and then installed his incompetent friends and family in various positions.
“politics in general” ok really? where do you draw the line? activists and resistance groups do politics. People who let the politicians enact and enforce oppressive policies without doing anything about it, do politics. people who quietly help oppressed and criminalized people: politics. Obviously lots of factors make it more or less possible and easy for people to resist.
Then again, people do resist in some of the worst possible conditions. Look at the Palestinians (yeah i find it hard to think about much else lately), the brutal conditions under which they’ve been living for decades, and they never stopped resisting. they are an inspiration.
my point is, whatever you think of politics, politics is not something you can opt out of. when you think you do, you’re just supporting those in power.
> my point is, whatever you think of politics, politics is not something you can opt out of.
Okay I think we have a misunderstanding here. You seem to be taking my personal opinion about the morality side of politics as me saying that I do not interact with it at all which isn’t the case. It’s kind of like buying a used car, I know the guy is trying to swindle me but I need a car so I will engage with him but with a full knowledge he is swindler.
Maybe there is an issue of definition? You having a much wider idea of what “politics” is? Because for me it Is politicians, the professional liars who bullshit people into voting for them. I do not recognize asctivists as being involved in politics and resistance groups only marginally so. I see them as trying to solve problems rather than getting involved in the whole fighting for stools as we say it in Poland.
To give you some idea about how I see things. The current ruling party (PO) ruled in the past and they got voted out and replaced with the recently ruling party (PiS) because they were ridiculously corrupt and were lining their pockets. They are not the good guys, they are just not autocrats who wanted to make the country their personal fiefdom. We just replaced worse with bad.
Sorry for one more but to give you some cultural context.
Poland lost its independence around the time US gained theirs.
For close to 200 years, save for the short period between World Wars, we did not run our affairs. Government has always been a tool of the one or other colonizer. This is why we view them with extreme suspicion.
I clearly do have a wider definition of politics (read the comment you were responding to to find out!)
I just really don’t like this “oh politics, right, that thing these rich dudes do over there” sentiment. It’s infantilizing. I’m an adult, i try to take responaibility and care for the communities i belong to.
Orgasms; the one thing Dorothy can’t control in this world.
….I’m suddenly realizing how perfect Dorothy would be as the protagonist for a horny tale about a girl discovering she likes BDSM subbing. Absolute self control, constantly solving problems, horrible at relaxation and in dire need of someone to force it on her.
Hm. Well, when you put it that way, it’s no wonder Ruth and Jennifer were both drawn to helping her! Now they just need to go that extra mile, for the greater good…
I’d suggest Dina, but I’m guessing Becky would be extremely Not Okay with that.
The only thing standing in the way of Becky having an extremely good time topping the fuck out of Dotty right along with Dina is the knowledge that now Becky would have to explain to Joyce her and Dina having a taste in/of bony poindexter.
No, no – Science (with the !!1! optional) is also about figuring out what CAN’T be replicated, writing _that_ down, and then having these records freely available for posterity
–Dave, “This happened twice, we’ve never seen it happen again, future hypotheses in this area NEED to include a mechanism for it to happen even once somehow”
Oh no. No! No, no, no, no, NO! That is such a bad I idea. Somehow, Walky is going to either get talked in to, or come up with it on his own, that a one-night-day-whatever-stand is juuust what she needs. And she’ll go for it. (sigh).
I think Walky is clearly resistant to the idea in this page, he said what he said and he means it – he is dealing with the Lucy issues in his life and is not going to attempt to rebound on Dorothy. It’s how a lot of amicable breakups between people still technically in love eventually turn acerbic or at least drift apart.
On a side note, despite what Becky says, pâté is not usually cat food, as it usually contains garlic and/or onions and some sort of alcohol, all of which are toxic to cats.
Which is why I said usually not cat food. That should be safe for feline consumption, but pâté made for consumption for humans cannot be consumed by cats.
Also, “Dumbing of Age book 14: If I can’t save my friend from making bad Choicess, I guess I’ll just go back to studying to become… Queen sorceress capitalism or whatever I was planning on.”
This is Totally off the Wall.
and probably not my place but …
Has anyone else gotten Trans Vibes from Dorothy ?
( know Gaydar been going off loudly but Ive felt more than that for a while . Since the ENTIRE timeskip. )
But Im not Trans, I’m bringing it up for 2 reasons.
#1 Selfishly to say I was first in seeing where the storyline was going …
#2 To ask the experts , the other Trans reader what their take is.
It was either Willis or Joyce who said that if Dorothy were a boy, she and Dorothy would be married by now. Maybe that’s the endgame?? Anyway I like this angsty trans egg Dorothy theory.
I dont see it. Granted we aren’t a monolith, and each trans persons experience is unique to them, but I dont really get any pings on my transceiver when it comes to Dorothy.
Huh…you know, I wasn’t thinking anything like that before, but now that you mention it, I can definitely pick up the same vibe you’re detecting. Not especially hating but constantly de-emphasizing her body, sublimating her desire for control and masculinity into “I’m gonna be the first FEMALE president, in total defiance of society’s expectations for me!”, desperately craving release and self-expression but has no idea how to do that. There’s a pretty valid interpretation that can be wrung out from those elements, I think!
I don’t get the impression from Dorothy’s bio that she particularly wants to be a trailblazer in that regard; she’s just aware it may be an obstacle. She’s also aware her atheism may be an equally if not more difficult sell. I don’t want to harsh anyone’s headcanon, but of all the stuff she’s struggling with right now, I just don’t see dysphoria as part of it.
thats fair. but a complex of being the first female President , and not feeling female would just the amount of monkey in the works for some dyphoria to leak out
Yes great word smithing [- tranferring my vibes to facts! thats wht I am talking anout
Im not on the opinion its def true yet
I think Willis has very carefully planted it here as an easteregg for over eager reader to find. Much like Dorothys autism.
I see it as between Text and subtext . ITs a set up without neccesarily a planned payoff. But if right , it will keep growing esp as Dorothys crises grows
I get the suspicion that Dorothy’s breaking point will come after Walky realizes he’s dumped for real and goes back to Amber, but Willis is nothing if not one to circumvent expectations
Hes Headed back to the annoying one instead, because all the reader hate them toghther. Walky said she was out of his league and didnt wan to scew up the “Love cheese” sitatuion. and he did.
He fought his parent for her ( and gotten nothing )
Id prefer he went back to Amazigirl this time. She’d forgive him
But Lucy is stringing him along for one more ARC. There was a Tumblr preview of Lucy/walky so weve got more hell of thay coming.
This must be jennifers fault somehow. Shes going to meddle to repair them
the issue is always becky, becky does go places she shouldn’t. Also, Walky saying it would be interpreted as an ulterior motive, in that people would assume he was not moving on from dorothy or trying to use her as a rebound after Lucy. Becky is an ostensibly neutral third party (or if anything, is invested in distracting Dorothy from Joyce), as such, her comments about bonetown are off-colour as per usual but don’t carry the same weight.
They’re talking about visiting Ossuary Village. A village where an ossuary full of skellingtons came alive and they all do normal village stuff, like going to the tavern or selling chickens or go to the strip club. It’s too small to be a town, so the nickname “Bone Town” is a euphemism.
Dorothy needs a spell on garbage roof. Just about everything she wanted is beyond her reach. Established patterns aren’t working. Her sacrifices don’t bring results.
Mental health counseling is a way out but there are so many bad therapists. Third time was the charm for my spouse. But the first two were time sinks.
And let’s not forget she admitted to avoiding talking about certain things to her therapist so she wouldn’t be prescribed medication due to the whole presidential aspirations thing.
I’d posit that Dorothy’s frustration is only partially sexual. And once she makes sure to disastrously bong the wrong person, she’ll still be left with the rest of the frustrations and possibly some new mistakes to worry about.
(idc they actually seem great for each other: walky pulls dorothy off the ledge of “perfect respectability” and dorothy evens out walky’s more impish tendencies)
im interested why everyone thinks dorothy’s issue is sexually related? she’s literally stating out loud that her lifelong dream may not be what she thought it would. no ones gonna ask her about that?
Nothing the characters say is the exact literal truth. When Dorothy says “I am upset because of my dream of being President being torpedoed, an event Walky was actually present for” she means “I am upset because I’m not having sex”. But, when other characters say “Maybe Dorothy’s upset because she’s not having sex” they actually mean “Maybe Dorothy’s upset because she’s questioning her dream of being President.” The fools!
That’s really just a symptom everyone ignores, the cause is her almost OCD need for control and being so high-strung that she threatens to snap. And for that she needs to relax, be it via alcohol or sex or so is their idea.
I think it’s because of the context- Ruth and Billie think everything’s about sex, and these three have mostly+most recently seen her taking this out on Joyce/Joe as a pair.
okay, I’ve not been on the Dorothy needs sex wagon, but if Dina’s suggesting that such may be the case, well maybe now I’m willing to believe such to the be case
I’m remembering one of the two times Mike was unironically correct with no additional qualifications, when he called out Walky and Billie on how they were treating Joyce after she started cussing. Walky deflected Mike’s accusation of “You’ve been needling her all this time because she was so sunny you had something to mock about how she needed to grow up, but now that she’s gone through some real trauma and is dropping the sunniness you want her to go back?” and Billie just fucking says “Yes.”
That’s how Dorothy and Sarah have made me feel when Joyce’s atheism came out and since she and Joe have gotten together. She changes on their terms, not hers. Is that an autism thing? If you’re on the spectrum god fucking forbid you make a life change? Because it freaked people out long before Joyce saw that doctor.
She has an unrealistic plan for her whole life that she formulated when she was a child based on her childhood fantasies, and she’s strictly following that plan even after realizing her end goal isn’t what she imagined.
She should give that up.
“Chopped liver is liver that’s chopped… DUH”
“Oh, thanks for clearing that up”
Seems obvious, but I was very confused when someone once asked me if anywhere nearby sold a good chopped cheese.
I only know what that is because Miles gets one in the latest Spiderman video game.
Oh, that does look good.
That’s a modified cheese with long, angled front forks, isn’t it?
Well fuck, that’s what i should’ve eaten in New York
“Avoid the string cheese, is all I’m saying.”
Ohhhh dear. Yeah, Dorothy’s been pushing people away (aside from Joyce because she feels like she needs to help her). Oh dear.
TBF the people she’s pushing away ATM are her ex, Becky (who likes to poke and prod) and then Becky’s girlfriend, so like I can’t blame her lol.
Though I demand more Dina and Dorothy interactions.
Her ex who very recently rejected her after she told him to hook up with another girl who’d be good for him but that relationship imploded, only to later turn around and beg him to dump his girlfriend for her.
…Dorothy isn’t doing well, no.
I don’t think Walky would dare tell her that he broke up with Lucy, but if not, it’s very intriguing to think that Dorothy would explode over something that she herself proposed.
I don’t think Walky is even sure if he and Lucy are broken up or not.
When he challenged his parents, he said “I had a girlfriend” (mentioning Lucy obviously).
But I don’t think I want to take another step with her, at least be at peace with her.
Yeah, who could be asshole enough to say she’d have to be a war criminal? Oh, I remember. It was Raidah, wasn’t it?.
Terrible! The worst person you know just made a great point!
Not guys, guts. i mean sure, people will also hate her guys, whatever that means
“hate her guys” – can’t even imagine the hate Walky would get as “First Gentleman”?
=C
And like two thirds of commenters. Correctly
Who else does Dorothy even have as friends?
Amber and Sarah are definitely her friends. Danny also.
It would be good for Dorothy to reestablish some friendships that don’t revolve around Joyce, from her comment it sounds like Joyce was her only motivation for showing up.
Amber, at least I think, may be the right option.
Hanging out with Amber brings a higher than baseline risk of Walky showing up.
As previously proven with the gaming shenanigans from Sunday. Luckily the snacks ran out so Walky left.
It happens. You get together with a group of people, and you seem like friends, but the friend who brought you in leaves/changes, and suddenly, you start to realize you have nothing in common with everyone else in the group except that one friend who’s moved on.
Dina saying it like it is. <3
*plays “Infotain Me” by Ochre on Hacked Muzak*
I’mma take this time to point out that, yes, while Dina seems to be validating Billie’s theory, they are coming at it from VERY DIFFERENT ANGLES.
GET EXCITED!
*plays “Good Morning World!” by Burnout Syndromes on hacked muzak*
Correlation doesn’t imply causation.
definitely a catalyst though
HEY! I wanna be queen sorceress of capitalism!
Can I be Chief Warlock of Recidivism?
None will surmount Empress of Evolution Dina.
I don’t see why not! Rise Chief Warlock!
I’m Court Jester of Needing a Few Bucks, Just Until Payday, C’mon, You Know I’m Good For It.
Okay but the Bucks are kinda mean right now
Deer are notoriously standoffs.
Fear the deer!
AGAIN?!
I’ll settle for a post as the Shadow Minister Without Portfolio for Deciding Who Dies.
The list is getting a bit long…
Leona Helmsley?
Yeah I know very dated reference but couldn’t think of anyone more recent matching that title
Kim Kardashian. That empire seriously has to be built on some kind of dark magic.
No, it was built on a big ass and the willingness to bang anything in a Lakers uniform. Now she’s like a fucking paragon of momhood and people give a shit about her opinion. WTG ‘Merka.
next book i get i’m asking for dorothy as queen sorceress of capitalism
You said you didn’t need to meddle, Dorothy.
Has Becky seen Brooklyn 99? “Bone” is more specifically involving a penis rather than a hetero thing.
Something something “bone time, Bone Saw is ready” something something. I don’t know, that’s all I got.
BONE!!!!
it makes me sad that Andre Braugher passed away
RIP to one of the greats.
I’ve definitely heard queer folx use the term “bone” to refer to sex when there were no penises involved. Source: is a queer afab person who spends a significant chunk of my time at a downtown sex club lol 😆
And there we go, Becky is free to use “BONE!?!?!?!?”
Peener for Keener?
Dorothy doesn’t need to meddle, but she may need to diddle.
She just needs some alone time with an unbalanced washer-load.
yeah but there’s just something that bothers her seeing Joyce with Joe. Something. Who knows what it could be. Probably just that he was a bit of a dick very recently. I’m sure that’s all it is and nothing else
What spells do queen sorceresses of capitalism get at level 3?
Magic Fiscal.
Ughhhhhhhhhhhh 😣😣😣
Transmute: Labor to Profit
Level 3 is fairly wimpy. The only new spell is stagflation.
Does that only enlarge stags, or does it work on does too?
Magic Carpet Bombing!
Summon Killer Drone!
Kissinger of Death: Surprise Coup!
Clairvoyance: Dissipate Fog of War map-wide!
+100 Ethical Flexibility!
Protection from Truth-based attacks!
Withhold healing from any player by invoking “IP Rights” spell!
Summon Poseidon: Sea Rise!
Gay Panic: Deflect attack by blaming minorities!
Blood Sacrifice: perform at least one (1) genocide per year to protect queendom from dissident races!
Extra-special “Nuke Everyone” metapower!
Summon killer drone is now level 1, and Protection from Truth-based Attacks is a rare level 12 spell.
Nice list though.
Summon killer drone is a cantrip specifically.
You can also get a higher level spell Summon Drone Swarm. The locals are really putting it to good use in Ukraine.
Protection from Truth-based attacks is not rare, especially thanks to the recently available Post-Truth upgrade to the Manufacture of Consent artefact
Obsolete thanks to drones.
Not really. Having access to (one of?) the largest most accurate networks of satellites and telecom surveilance apparatuses worldwide is still crucial to US hegemony
I’m glad her brother likes cooking.
Bubbie = Grandma
Ah, I see the difference now. I was thinking of “bubby”, which is how little kids say “brother” ’round these parts. The -ie makes a lot of difference.
Yeah bubbie is Yiddish.
Bubbie and Zadie for non Yids , here
( and thats where the whole Daddy —> Zaddy thing comes from for you Genzers )
Walky are you really gonna pass up an opportunity to dive back in guilt and responsibility free?
Not until Willis teases us with the possibility some more.
**puts on an Aeris costume plus pink cat ears**
Ahem…
“JUST HAVE SEX ALREADY!!!”
(if anyone gets this obscure-ass reference, please let me know – if not, you may simply assume that I am excited for FF7 Rebirth…)
is this a VGCats reference?
Yes.
I see that Dorothy is still fighting to be less self-aware than she actually is.
I don’t like seeing her in that state
It’s ironic that Becky considers her an enemy, because they are both the same level of performative.
Hating the parts of yourself you’re not entirely comfortable with in other people is a pretty common reaction.
She doesn’t, that’s the performative part
“c’mon throw a dog a bone” “how’d you know about puppy dorothy??”
Help! Everyone’s an animal!
Why are they looking at you? Because they both realize that you are a now available man, who still has some feelings for Dorothy.
Possibly also because they can objectively come to the conclusion that you are attractive. Even though they don’t have any sexual attraction to you.
Or because they know you and Dorothy have done the horizontal tango before.
But Becky pushed them away and now it seems she wants the opposite
And that is where Walky must measure his words very well.
Don’t think Walky knows she’s rejected Yale, though? As far as he knows, he still has every reason to not be the thing that stops her from chasing/achieving her dream(s).
It seems she said it the same day she received the rejection.
But not to Walky.
To the best of my recollection. This is a point in time where Becky has the power to change the future with a few words.
She won’t, but she could.
Nobody is objectively attractive. There is no such thing.
Thank you; you explained it better than I ever could have, and I appreciate it greatly.
Disappointed in Dorothy, or disappointed in the story?
Yes.
Ehh, I can understand her taking a while to accept him. It hasn’t been that long in-comic since he started changing, and they went to the same high school. He’s been a gross hornball for 95% of the time she’s known him.
This.
Agreed. On all counts
Dorothy’s problem with Joe is that nobody fucking cares about Dorothy’s problem with Joe.
Yes, that is definitely all that it is.
I mean, Joyce cared, and Joe cared, they were terrified of her finding out until she did and lied to them saying she’s totally cool with it.
I really enjoy Walky and Dorothy’s rapport.
Me too, but I think it’s very hasty on the part of Dina and Becky to believe that Walky will fix this, if so, I hope Dorothy listens to him, because this obsession with Joyce is not helping her at all.
god I hope this ends in a dorothy/becky fight, I NEED it
I hope this ends with Walky *not* chasing after her for the bone zone, and Dotty watching Danny zooming off on the back of Sal’s motorcycle to go get Ihop.
The way she treats people just rubs me in all the wrong ways, and the conga line of consequences has a ways to go yet.
lol, I was extra wrong about Becky being relationship police trying to keep Dorothy from upsetting Walky and Lucy’s relationship.
Unless, she’s thinking he should set Dorothy up with someone from his wing. Maybe the cutie from the other side of the half-bath.
These couples are so dang cute
Becky having her arm around Dina’s shoulders? Excellent.
Okay I didn’t mean Dorothy/Walky; jury’s still out on that one as far as I’m concerned. The other two couples, though <3
Do it for Science.
POTUS is AT LEAST three of the Four Horsemen. They’re not Pestilence, but they got Conquest/Glory, Overcharging, and Death down to a T.
Oh, it depends on the POTUS in question. The previous one was very much Pestilence.
Didn’t you know bleach cures Pestilence?
Never heard of overcharging as one. They do got Famine under their belt too tho
“Overcharging” is probably Famine viewed through US Wendy’s recerntly deciding to try this new thing called “variable pricing to charge more when busier”
–Dave, i see no possible way this could go wrong^{tm JDN}
I like these stories, especially the ones where Jesus apparently just goes around beating the fuck out of people.
less cool when he gets Peter to attack a cop and then scolds him for attacking a cop.
That’s not less cool, that’s Jesus being a troll and having some fun with Peter. It’s a character moment.
Dorothy, dear, stop lying to your therapist. At this point I think it’s more likely that Joe ends up murdered by Dorothy rather than Sarah, even though both of them think they’re doing it for “Joyce’s sake”
I think even Sarah is aware that that would be too much.
I full heartedly agree.
Though, statically, Walky is packing more than 50ccs of hot beef (the average is penis about 168ccs, while the average thermos of beef soup significantly more voluminous still).
It WOULD be a fun way to re-intro the character though.
But can Dotty date a mute who doesn’t feed her need to be better then her current SO?
Uh… what? Literally where is any of that idea coming from?
Beef
Not that, the other thing. I know who Beef is.
Yeah solidly second this. What??
Beef is a rarely-seen character in this universe, brother to … Walky?
Supposedly Walky’s twin brother in the Walkyverse, but actually switched at birth for Sal.
Since that didn’t happen in the Dumbiverse, he’s got no connection to Walky here.
so what I’m hearing is that he has yet to be switched with Sal in this one
–Dave, imagining Danny’s reaction, with plewds aplenty
Yes, but no one has all of the pieces to put that together, and they’re college students so they assume everything is about sex.
What she really needs is someone to talk to about it, but that’s not likely with this cast.
And them coupling now would likely kill any possibility of an actual relationship in the future.
Fun fact. The band 10cc was named for just this kind of injection.
Which reminded me of Steely Dan, for no particular reason.
You can do anything naked as long as you scream “FOR SCIENCE”

Zach Weinersmith, yet another genius of the webcomic art. I wonder if he and Willis have ever met.
I met Zach at a comics convention once. I taught him some trigonometry and in exchange he drew a picture of me wearing a top hat and riding a mammoth. He’s cool.
If the only difference between science and screwing around is writing it down, then by logging the events in comic form it’s for science.
I mean, an “empire of dirt” and a “queendom of capitalism” are basically the same thing, really.
Joe’s arm is thicker than entire Joyce’s body.
A reminder that Dorothy hates Joe and not just a little bit. She just hides it for Joyce’s sake.
She hides it? Since when!?
Since the wedding, sometime next century in our timeline.
The part where she didn’t say this to Joyce? She hasn’t said anything like this to Joyce for quite a while.
Since the tree scene, when she said she was gonna stop giving them grief. She hasn’t don’t it to Joyce’s face since
I usually treat sorcerer as gender neutral word based on the D&D class you can have any gender expression and still be a sorcerer.
I grant hereby grant you a doctorette in word magic.
doctrix
Doctrina
–Dave, you have to write a Manifesto at the end
I love the word sorceress, and petition for this to be the gender neutral version instead.
Counterpoint: sorceress is cool and sexy
I still think weed is the answer
Being too distracted to recall the question is not the same as an answer.
That was Walky!
SERIOUSLY, I’m even willing to break kayfabe here, Becky would NEVER
Oh, wow, I goofed.
By the way, that expression of Joyce’s in panel one……calm down for a moment girl, he’s on the public road.
*you are on public roads
I am still hoping for surprises from their karaoke. Maybe she sung even more songs and she didn’t realize the were about her feelings.
She needs a hobby. She studies too much, and is in clubs for her résumé.
I think that singing will be that hobby and if not, keep looking and of course leave certain clubs, not all, just lighten the load
They’re looking at him because he is the only heterosexual male present.
No no, Becky, that was pretty good
I object to the classification of chopped liver as a paté. Patés are generally chopped or ground and mixed raw, then cooked, while chopped liver is cooked and then chopped into a rougher consistency. Difference between egg salad and a fritatta.
how big are the liver pieces in chopped liver? I always imagined a lot bigger than ground.
Not that big.
As I recall, one parent came from Jewish roots and one from Catholic.
I’d remembered that she had 3 Catholic grandparents and 1 Jewish, but the most specific I can find is https://www.dumbingofage.com/socialist/, so I probably misremembered.
Nana is her Irish Catholic grandmother (mentioned in a bonus strip).
You were right
I knew it was way back, because I remembered the comment about maybe possibly Jewish from Family weekend
Guilt²
I keep telling you all, Willis has secret tapes of me in college.
For Science!
Yeah, this one is filled with perfect titles for DOA14: Personally, I’m holding out for Dorothy’s line in panel 4.
I wonder if perhaps Walky is going to assume that he and Lucy are officially broken up, go to support Dorothy (hem hem), then get caught in some way by Lucy who hasn’t been entirely clear and didn’t think they were fully broken up
“We were on a break” style
In such case, maybe she will learn that she needs to be clear when attempting to manipulate people’s emotions.
Nah, she’d come to the conclusion it’s somehow Walky that wasn’t clear.
Future Space Force Captain Julia Gray, Volume III: Rise of the Queen Sorceress of Capitalism
I’d buy the comic.
Yesssss
Ok, it is becoming kind of annoying that people think Dorothy can only be fixed through the magic of sex.
I acknowledge the rationality of your annoyance, but have seen it work in real life.
There are three possible solutions
1) magic of sex
2) magic of weed
3) personal realization after deep self-examination, putting aside childhood fantasies, and accepting that she is ordinary but capable of trying to do the things she thinks have values. And also to learn to study right.
Well, we all know 3 ain’t happenin’, so…
It’s the sort of thing I would expect it from Becky, but not Dina, so this strip really surprised me! I think Dina’s understanding of how horny other people are has recently been a bit skewed by her girlfriend, for better or worse.
I believe Dorothy cannot be fixed. Sex, weed… it’s just some relief to her. I think she reached some kind of bottom.
If rock bottom was a myth, I wouldn’t have tried to kill myself five times at this point. That’s a weird stance to take.
Well the lesbian plan is off the table, time to go back to train to become the next war criminal in chief.
You can do bo… (looks at America’s voting history) Yeah, okay, you probably can’t do both.
I’d like to imagine the High Queen Sorceress of capitalism as a cross between Uncle Sam and Rita Repulsa. She is perpetually engulfed in a swirling orb of cash and holds a scepter that ends in a golden bust of Adam Smith.
There it is! That’s the Job description!
Perfection!
Her grimoire is a copy of Atlas Shrugged.
Dina: “Walky, you should blow her back out”
My brain did not parse that correctly. I was picturing Dorothy as having deflated like a plastic milk jug needing its dents removed via inflation.
also acceptable
As if there wasn’t already enough inflation porn of these characters.
“For Science!”
We really need an AU where Dina is some kind of super scientist with Becky as her beautiful assistant XD
I have good news for you: She’s canonically a mad scientist in the Girl Genius universe! https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20181031
Not too much of a stretch to imagine Becky as her beautiful assistant there!
Right now.”
even Dina noticed
@mano308gs yesterday: lmao. I was trolling you for expressing a silly opinion.
But see milu’s list of spells (far) above.
At this point is it really a exaggeration that aiming to be president under certain circumstance is a Guarantee that you’re going to involve yourself in some really evil shit.
Wrong post, this was for milu
I mean, you are not wrong, politics is one of the dirtiest aspects of human existence.
Poland then huh? ouch. sympathies.
so you did mean mainstream electoral politics. i don’t know anything about Polish politics. but isn’t a…good thing that PiS lost the elections? i only know them as pushing restrictions on abortion (bordering on total prohibition if i’m not mistaken) and anti-LGBT positions. obviously that’s a narrow lens though.
Let me know when you manage to stop your government from supplying bombs to Israel.
Well, that’s just needlessly mean.
You’re probably right
But the arrogant attitude of “I’m better than you” was pissing me off
but i’m not better than you. i’m as inadequate and sucky as anyone else. this is not a me thing. it’s an everyone thing. anyway.
There already is manga about that
Oh I’m aware. “Do not cite the dark magic to me, witch,” etc.
Come one, don’t so cruel to not tell us the name./j
I think about “Nana & Kaoru”
Even if Dotty and Walky get it on, she’s still full of aversion
Everything is science. Barely science.
It’s only Science if it’s replicatable.
On a side note, despite what Becky says, pâté is not usually cat food, as it usually contains garlic and/or onions and some sort of alcohol, all of which are toxic to cats.
https://www.chewy.com/friskies-classic-pate-mixed-grill/dp/104066
Which is why I said usually not cat food. That should be safe for feline consumption, but pâté made for consumption for humans cannot be consumed by cats.
Try telling the cats that.
Also, “Dumbing of Age book 14: If I can’t save my friend from making bad Choicess, I guess I’ll just go back to studying to become… Queen sorceress capitalism or whatever I was planning on.”
I definitely associate pâté with cat food, as it’s the only style of canned cat food one of ny cats likes.
Farming it out the LGBTQ readers
( maybe its because I think Dorothy would be much quicker to recognize Bi impulses in herself.
Unless they were suppressed for Presidential Urges.
On the otherhand, thats goes 10x for being Trans )
( has Willis even foreshadowed this? Im not even certain where the idea came from. shrug. its a vibe )
I take IT BACK.
Willis did IMPLANT it. I’ve been INCEPTED.
just two days ago
“Many Men suffer from this”
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2024/comic/book-14/03-trystin-in-the-wind/detox/
and Joyce immediately hugs her.
and she Dorothy says “That was not my intent”
But she said “MEN” . and never corrects anyone.
Then https://www.dumbingofage.com/2024/comic/book-14/03-trystin-in-the-wind/complex/
Holy Hell, Look at the Sideeye Dorothy Gives becky for calling her a Girl and not “DUDES” ..
She didnt even want to be hugged ( supposedly )
That SIDEEYE tho!
This has quickly gone from my Imagination , to barely only subtext.
anybody got more?
Foreshadow # 3 “TRANS ferring to yale”
Its weaksauce but there
ahaha you’re extremely clutching at straws, but go off =D
It was either Willis or Joyce who said that if Dorothy were a boy, she and Dorothy would be married by now. Maybe that’s the endgame?? Anyway I like this angsty trans egg Dorothy theory.
thats Number 4
****************
( i think dottie endgame might be Dor/ Joycelyne that or joycelyn/Becky.
These are strong healthy family bonds and joyce would LOVE Dorothy as a sister in law
I don’t want to harsh anyone’s headcanon, but of all the stuff she’s struggling with right now, I just don’t see dysphoria as part of it.
thats fair. but a complex of being the first female President , and not feeling female would just the amount of monkey in the works for some dyphoria to leak out
Has she actually talked about being the first female President?
That seems kind of depressing, given that it’s about 17 years before she’d even be qualified. I think she’d hope we’d have one before then.
Shes going to meddle to repair them
uh-oh, Dorothy’s villian lore…
Any panel with Beck is automagically 10,000% more annoying.
I’m enjoying Becky’s role in this, and that’s not illegal.
Yes it is. The police have been notified.
i’m reporting your comment, your face, and the horse you rode in on.
ASSOCIATING WITH BECKY HAS BEEN KNOWN TO LEAD DIRECTLY TO PUBLIC INDECENCY, CITIZEN
–Dave, oh gracious, this means I get to use SURRENDER DOROTHY
the fact that if Walky said that Dorothy could use a visit to bonetown, he would get the side eye irritated me more than it should have
the issue is always becky, becky does go places she shouldn’t.
Dorothy, “saving my friend from bad choices” implies you might have a better choice in mind… Do you possible, wanna share who that is?… :3
she will, soon. Looks like Sarah was right
it does suck realising your dream is dumb/evil and/or never gonna happen
“_Everything_ is for science.”
“Even science itself?”
“Especially science itself.”
Stay good, Walky, stay good.
Dorothy…you just keep on doin’ what you’re doin’, okay?
Having a depression-induced anxiety attack? Why do you want her to keep on doin’ that? Do you hate Dorothy?
Population 2 if you’re BORING
But I’m over here at population 1 so who am I to judge ;_;
Personal taste is personal taste is personal taste.
Never too late to avoid the “Love Not Found” future!
I’d posit that Dorothy’s frustration is only partially sexual. And once she makes sure to disastrously bong the wrong person, she’ll still be left with the rest of the frustrations and possibly some new mistakes to worry about.
I didn’t come here to give solutions.
Joe’s smile/eyebrow are moooving me
–Dave, next book titles: “PRACTICE DESTIGMATIZING PHYSICAL CONTACT” OR “Not everything’s for friggin’ science”
Take your bets. Take your bets.
Who does Walky hook up with next? Is it Dorothy? Does Lucy get some?
And what former partner is disgusted/infuriated/heartbroken in the process?
… is it Joe?
–Dave, yes, I know it’s like 137 to 1, but still
Sadly Lucy, but it should be Asher
Hopefully in reverse order to cause the most chaos.
walky/asher upsets all the applecarts
go fuck her walky.
just go do it.
Everything the characters say is the exact literal truth.
I think it’s because of the context- Ruth and Billie think everything’s about sex, and these three have mostly+most recently seen her taking this out on Joyce/Joe as a pair.
i keep waiting for the lines to thin out again bc i reread older strips so often
okay, I’ve not been on the Dorothy needs sex wagon, but if Dina’s suggesting that such may be the case, well maybe now I’m willing to believe such to the be case
The only other time Mike was correct was when he posited that Walky had ADHD, for the record.
Don’t give up, Dorothy.
Is giving up actually good for her? Is Dorothy wanting to turn herself some bad person?
She has an unrealistic plan for her whole life that she formulated when she was a child based on her childhood fantasies, and she’s strictly following that plan even after realizing her end goal isn’t what she imagined.
She should give that up.
What we really need is a Poopsmith of Capitalism, someone who can shovel up all the whatsit that gets slug around on a daily basis.
