In case anyone is wondering what’s going on with that thing on the tummy…
I always thought that the umbilical cord was just cut off. But no. The cord has a clip put on near the base, and is severed about 2 inches or so above that point.
The remaining stub eventually just dries up, turns black, and falls off. It takes about a week and a half, sometimes longer.
So newborn Joyce still has that umbilical stump and clip.

But she’s asking right after the doctor said she’s healthy.
It occurred to me that inasmuch as Carol was getting older, she was concerned about age-related issues with gestation and birth, such as Down syndrome. A Down syndrome baby could well be described as “healthy”.
Nowadays, prenatal screening could catch that, but I can see a devout couple such as Carol and Hank saying that they will trust in God and accept whatever child she gives birth too. But she still might worry about it.
