i mean, i’ve heard ppl express disappointment with the switch but i’d hope a semipopular switch game would still be good quality compared to the average mobile game. (that said i think i have more hours on pvz2 than anygames i’ve spent actual money on)
I honestly disagree. Both have gameplay loops made for people with very short attention spans. BotW’s primary gameplay is these microdungeon puzzles scattered about the world. This comes at the expense of large dungeons. Meanwhile Mario gives you a moon literally every minute or two.
They’ve come quite a way, games like Genshin Impact and such are technically mobile games, and those could definitely be compared to games like BotW and TotK (though I’d still argue that the new Zelda games are slightly more mechanically dense, you could probably run them on top-of-the-line mobile hardware if they were written for it, not emulated of course since that takes way more than the native hardware to make work generally). The recent Pokemon games though, Legends of Arceus and Scarlet&Violet definitely have that lack of polish that could be associated with open world mobile games, but that’s more a Game Freak (the Pokemon studio branch) problem…
Yeah, by Booster’s backstabbing, manipulative, inconsiderate sister. She was super demanding about it and kinda said some really shitty things to Booster.
I *just* now realized that Walky and his roommate Booster are both twins. I mean, I knew they were both twins, but they are living together and both have a built-in compare and contrast sibling. Opportunity for bonding or?
Booster seems overly intuitive and analytical (?), while their sibling is possibly oblivious. Um, Walky, is also too oblivious? “Discuss.”
I feel like before the fake girlfriend plan Walky could’ve easily asked for his own Nintendo at any time. Just another reason that plan backfired. What other secret misfortunes did it create?
guess it’s not a priority when you have one someone could borrow for free. tho even as a roommate if i didn’t know walky better idk if i’d rly let him borrow someting as pricey as a switch unless he promised to not lieave the room with it or wash/wipe down his hands before nad after playing lol
I think Walky has a laptop and Switch games are not hardware intensive. He can download yuzu and go to town. It’s astonishing how easy it is. He can even play games early if he knows where to search. ToK notoriously leaked like w weeks before its launch.
Okay, but imagine if Sarah was playing that Nintendo, it would be her roommate’s boyfriend’s roommate’s girlfriend’s brother’s roommate’s sister’s Nintendo.
Honestly, DoA is pretty consistent about the passage of time. I know many other comics that either go at a breakneck pace, or tap dance around explaining how much time has passed in-universe since the first strip (while still acknowledging it passes).
well maybe lucy and him had a standing plan to either always meet later in the day/weekend if he either didn’t sleep in or stay in for the morning , tho nothing wrong with having some alone time
As someone who watched morning cartoons all through the 90s and into the 00s to the point that i had a schedule of which channels had what on saturday and sunday i just wanna say: i disagree.
maybe he was more of a ‘watching cartoons’ guy growing up and the occasional small collectible toy but not enough for it to be an expensive hobby like on amber/ethan’s level as opposed to a bunch of gamer stuff (walky streamer in his future is possible tho lol) [if not being just a ‘rambunctious’ kid, even if not athetletic/jockey, spend more of his childhood running around and playing outside as opposed to stereotypical nerdy stuff]
or this takes place in a time line where the nintendo switch is fairly new and still kinda at a high price to not spend it on a college student outside of like a christmas gift
If not his mom thinking he was teh perfect’ studious’ child (despite never having to study) and even tho he didn’t exactly hide some nerdy aspects (tho he probably did talk up his ‘manly’ side a bit more) or like “David would never waste time on games” or so
Other than school stuff, clothes, and stuff related to cartoons, Walky doesn’t really have anything.
He tends to spend his own money (from where he gets it) on food.
And I’m not to sure his parents buy him a bunch of stuff; his care package had the personal gift of cookies, while Sal’s care package was an impersonal gift card.
lol did he not expect booster to return it eventually. tho given how walky was the ‘fave’ child til recently im’ surprised he didn’t get a bonus allowance to spend on ‘luxuries’ lol
I’m actually a bit surprised Walky doesn’t have a Nintendo. The most recent one is nearly seven years old! Breath of the Wild launched when he was 13! The Walkertons must have a rule against gaming if they haven’t bought their favorite child the most popular and accessible gaming system on the market for Christmas or his birthday in the last six years! Like he clearly has an interest, what happened? Dexter and Monkey Master DVD’s must be fucking expensive!
well, doa is in a slightly diff alternate universe where covid never happened (tho other than ‘daily funny strips’ i imagine it’d be a pain incorporating that into the main story line, even as like a parallel with some other similar outbreak in the college) so not everyone was getting nintendo switches to not go insane during the pandemic lol
Those are actually somewhat rare now. The games even more so. If Sal or Amber having one is even still canon those are collector’s items. Same with the ds/3ds series. It’s much more plausible they’d all be playing on Switch lites. Game preservation is important ya’ll.
How about doing that homework he’s so behind on, can’t count on Amber feeling sorry for him anymore. Perhaps we will get a Mom story-line where she drives him to tutoring and watches him study.
Some people have this notion that people need friends of the same gender. It always felt a little segretate-y to me. Like, what’s “guy stuff”, even? I was born vaguely guy-shaped and in the 30 years since then, I’ve never been able to understand what men have that simply mustn’t be discussed in the presence of a woman.
Its fine if you feel comfortable talking about everything with anyone, gender’s bullshit, it’s totally made up. And yet totally real, all at the same time. Not everyone feels comfortable talking about everything with everyone. Like if want to talk about how there’s seemingly masculine things that really undermines us without having to do caveats about how, yes, patriarchy undermines women more and in different ways. Having a real life conversation without having to do social media disclaimers on every fucking thing.
Alright, I’m not playing this “I didn’t say you said” game. And I’m not saying “guy stuff” doesn’t exist or whatever, I’m literally asking what it is. Jesus fucking Christ.
After reading the comments it is indeed strange that the Walky doesn’t have some sort of portable console of its own or is not glued to a mobile phone. It would be a massacre for his concentration
Unfortunately Walky, that was never gonna happen anyway. Your mom’s in town still and you pissed her off last night. I don’t think she’s gonna let the grades drop without seeing you today.
It’s Saturday, which means the hologram that is the college Walky perceives he is attending goes down for maintenance and blinks out into nothingness periodically (2nd panel).
You ever get the feeling that Walky never got the opportunity to play with other kids in Preschool and Kindergarten? Feels like he’s missing on a lot of those fundamentals

somewhat surprised he doesn’t have phone games
Yeah, but HIS BRAND
Le Roomie is under no obligation to assist in brand maintenance. I checked their roomie agreement.
i mean, i’ve heard ppl express disappointment with the switch but i’d hope a semipopular switch game would still be good quality compared to the average mobile game. (that said i think i have more hours on pvz2 than anygames i’ve spent actual money on)
My disappointment with the Switch is exactly that every game on it feels like a mobile game with production values that almost rival Nintendo games.
What I’ve seen of the Switch’s Mario and Zelda games are pretty far from feeling like mobile games.
I honestly disagree. Both have gameplay loops made for people with very short attention spans. BotW’s primary gameplay is these microdungeon puzzles scattered about the world. This comes at the expense of large dungeons. Meanwhile Mario gives you a moon literally every minute or two.
Yeah when I think mobile game I’m thinking like fruit ninja or subway surfers, not big expansive open world titles. Am I mistaken about that?
I’m under the impression that Bruno’s not talking about scope and size of the game, but rather the gamefeel and design philosophy
I have sadly almost gotten hooked on Evony, which is like if StarCraft were a gatcha game
Stolen??!!
Booster returned it awhile ago.
He might think so.
But we know Booster gave it back to Charlie (it’s Charlie, right?).
Given back.
Yeah, by Booster’s backstabbing, manipulative, inconsiderate sister. She was super demanding about it and kinda said some really shitty things to Booster.
How dare she! Doesn’t she know that her sibling’s roommate has “roommate’s sister’s Nintendo” rights?!
The nerve of some people, to go around acting like they “own” the property of their twin’s roommate’s roommate’s twin! It’s completely unacceptable!
“Discuss.”
! And… I just realized the same thing after reading your comment. Seems so obvious now…
Damn.
About Walky, even. :O
Switchnapped!
He has a special set of skills….
Need to send this to my roommate (who has played more TotK on my switch than I have)
I got TotK back in June… haven’t played it yet. Been too busy.
Life is about setting priorities. Are we sure yours are aligned properly?
As I don’t have it yet, let me borrow it. After all, I am your brother’s roommate
Brick Joke.
“At least I still have loudly talking to myself when I’m alone as a brand!”
“Now to find my roommates glasses so I can properly reenact the meme, as I am wont to do.”
Not sure Charlie would appreciate nacho cheese on the joy-cons of her switch drift is bad enough.
I think Walky’d prefer using his roommate’s sister’s Nintendo. It seems more “Walky-ish”, somehow. Like it’s his trademark or something.
Oh yeah, I forgot, Booster returned it to her.
Also, luckily, a Switch isn’t *that* expensive, you can probably donate some plasma or something, dude.
That’s been a lot harder thing to do since The World Basically Ended.
“IT’S JUST BEEN REVOKED”
See, this. THIS is what happens when you don’t lawyer up prior to the Nintendo custody hearing.
No big deal; just download an emulator and play some SNES roms
I think Walky has a laptop and Switch games are not hardware intensive. He can download yuzu and go to town. It’s astonishing how easy it is. He can even play games early if he knows where to search. ToK notoriously leaked like w weeks before its launch.
Tbf reasons for going back to the she’s emulator significantly went down when they remade both Trials of Mana and LiveALive.
*snes. Stupid auto correct.
my man’s having a new identity crisis every other day at this point
He has many low-intensity identity crises just to mix things up every now and again.
I wonder how many Nachito crumbs were on that Switch before Booster returned, I mean, cleaned off before returning.
Okay, but imagine if Sarah was playing that Nintendo, it would be her roommate’s boyfriend’s roommate’s girlfriend’s brother’s roommate’s sister’s Nintendo.
(I think that adds up right.)
Yep.
“…and what does that make us?”
“Absolutely nothing! As you soon will be.”
Oh no!!! Gotta get in that playtime before that damn dinner
Honestly, I’m so used to jokes about how slow this comic’s time-scale is that I’m actually shocked to learn that two full weeks have passed.
It don’t run linearly relative to our own, more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey… stuff.
Honestly, DoA is pretty consistent about the passage of time. I know many other comics that either go at a breakneck pace, or tap dance around explaining how much time has passed in-universe since the first strip (while still acknowledging it passes).
Heh. The time-signifier is probably the most important part of this strip for me, really.
That’s what you get for waking up Saturday morning.
Right? What’s up with that? Doesn’t he know Saturday starts at noon?
well maybe lucy and him had a standing plan to either always meet later in the day/weekend if he either didn’t sleep in or stay in for the morning , tho nothing wrong with having some alone time
Saturday is too precious to waste it sleeping, there are morning cartoons
Morning cartoons stopped being worth watching in 1986.
As someone who watched morning cartoons all through the 90s and into the 00s to the point that i had a schedule of which channels had what on saturday and sunday i just wanna say: i disagree.
Kind of wonder how old Chaucer59 was in 1986.
I’m mostly surprised that Walky doesn’t have one of his own. He likes video games and his parents buy him whatever he wants.
maybe he was more of a ‘watching cartoons’ guy growing up and the occasional small collectible toy but not enough for it to be an expensive hobby like on amber/ethan’s level as opposed to a bunch of gamer stuff (walky streamer in his future is possible tho lol) [if not being just a ‘rambunctious’ kid, even if not athetletic/jockey, spend more of his childhood running around and playing outside as opposed to stereotypical nerdy stuff]

hes looking with his special eyes but he isnt liking what he’s seeing :U
His brand!
Schteal the rhythm while you can.
*furious headbanging*
Bad sign. What you wanna bet they’re not out of nachitos, too?
i think that’s the bag of nachitos in his hand, presumably bought the day before so he wouldn’t have to leave his room today.
look at that bag, it’s off-brand russian nachitos: Nyetchidas.
lol did he not expect booster to return it eventually. tho given how walky was the ‘fave’ child til recently im’ surprised he didn’t get a bonus allowance to spend on ‘luxuries’ lol
Google’s captchas so ableist IM NOT A FRICKIN ROBOT
We’re now at the point where robots are significantly better at captchas than people.
What happened to the ones where i could just give a frog a prostate exam and be done?
Heh, in 2024 you will need to fail a certain portion of the captcha to be let in.
If I find the executive shit who approved that massively moronic idea, I will crawl into their human brainsack and [REDACTED]
Sorry, it’s my fault, I intentionally get around 20% wrong, to sabotage their “ai” training.
get your own, walky
he’s been thrown off his groove
I’m actually a bit surprised Walky doesn’t have a Nintendo. The most recent one is nearly seven years old! Breath of the Wild launched when he was 13! Well, it’s January 2023 now so the lockdown and vaccines and widespread masking would be when they were younger now. It can still have happened.
Doesn’t Walky have a Gameboy Advanced SP, like all the cool kids do?
Those are actually somewhat rare now. The games even more so. If Sal or Amber having one is even still canon those are collector’s items. Same with the ds/3ds series. It’s much more plausible they’d all be playing on Switch lites. Game preservation is important ya’ll.
How about joining a club, learning a hobby or taking up a sport and expanding your circle of friends instead?
How about doing that homework he’s so behind on, can’t count on Amber feeling sorry for him anymore. Perhaps we will get a Mom story-line where she drives him to tutoring and watches him study.
How about he does the art in a LAWsome video game that i code?
I mean he’s already selling merch, why not?
That’s not a bad idea but he also really needs to expand his circle of friends
Why? He has a friend group already.
He has no guy friends so he has no guys to talk to about guy stuff and at least two of his female friends want to shag him
That’s not healthy
he’s got Booster.
Where do they fit into this schema?
Don’t know what to make of Booster just yet
What’s not healthy about it? Why do friends need to be gendered?
Some people have this notion that people need friends of the same gender. It always felt a little segretate-y to me. Like, what’s “guy stuff”, even? I was born vaguely guy-shaped and in the 30 years since then, I’ve never been able to understand what men have that simply mustn’t be discussed in the presence of a woman.
Why is it even close to segretate-y?
I didn’t say ditch his female friends, I said add to his circle of friends
Its fine if you feel comfortable talking about everything with anyone, gender’s bullshit, it’s totally made up. And yet totally real, all at the same time. Alright, I’m not playing this “I didn’t say you said” game. And I’m not saying “guy stuff” doesn’t exist or whatever, I’m literally asking what it is. Jesus fucking Christ.
His interactions with Jason shows he would like more male friends or maybe even a mentor
Different perspectives can be good for you, help you think about things in a different way
No reason to be scared of them
He had like one extended interaction with Jason – right when Dorothy dumped him (and Jason got fired).
Certainly no reason to be scared of them, but also no reason to decide “my problem is that I don’t have guy friends.”
I’m not saying you need guy friends but Walky does because everyone is different
And he needs a wider group of friends because thees too many in his current group that want to shag him which means their advice will be skewed
A perfectly balanced and flavorful friendship donburi
I think I’ve missed your point but I do like donburi
Re: Walky’s friend group, as earthlings say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.
Is he behind on homework still? That was last semester. He’s doing fine now from everything I know.
He’s said himself that he’s already doing better.

I like to think he’s at least aware enough now to actually study instead of eating his tests.
Yeah, he’s not able to do the effortless As he could get in high school, but he’s learned some tricks to be able to study, so he’s doing okay.
Amber: how about you go play the newly released Red Steel 2 eh. How about that? (whiny grumbling tone) Freaking Lucy clones.
After reading the comments it is indeed strange that the Walky doesn’t have some sort of portable console of its own or is not glued to a mobile phone. It would be a massacre for his concentration
If Walky calls his parents to beg for a Switch, his mom’s gonna tell him that he needs to get his grades up, first.
Going to get me some early 2011 Wii gameplay. I hear great things about Metroid Other M.
Unfortunately Walky, that was never gonna happen anyway. Your mom’s in town still and you pissed her off last night. I don’t think she’s gonna let the grades drop without seeing you today.
gave it back, did they not ?
Is that… Russian popcorn?

Walky’s going to go all Hardy Boys backyard sleuth on this mystery, but never just directly ask Booster where the
Switch“Nintendo” is, isn’t he.Re: the alt-text: he’ll just have to Scrounge up a new one.
Two weeks already! Time sure flies.
There’s your problem, Walky. You should only have one level of dependency. Two and you get a middleman problem…
It’s only been two weeks?!
oh man he’s gonna be SO MAD when linda won’t buy him a nintendo because “yOu WeRe My GoOd StUdEnT”
Oh so this is how Charlie enters the main cast.
It’s Saturday, which means the hologram that is the college Walky perceives he is attending goes down for maintenance and blinks out into nothingness periodically (2nd panel).
Huh. I usually don’t have anything to critique about the art, but Walky’s got a serious case of Tiny Arm here.
The animation budget mostly went to the dream sequence.
Panel four? I like Taffy’s reply better, but it’s just foreshortening.
You ever get the feeling that Walky never got the opportunity to play with other kids in Preschool and Kindergarten? Feels like he’s missing on a lot of those fundamentals
He was Linda’s Special Boy.
I get the feeling the other kids didn’t want to play with him
He has special eyes.
Everytime someone mentions ‘special’, ‘eyes’, or ‘brand’ this is what plays in my head.
