If it wasn’t for the whole connection-to-the-Korean-mob-kidnapping-of-his-schoolmates-death-of-a-rotten-bastard thing, Asher would be one of the most got-it-together characters in the story.
must’ve missed the part where jennifer maliciously misgendered a trans person, blackmailed a suicidally depressed person for being a lesbian, and tried to prevent said suicidally depressed person from receiving treatment to extend said blackmail
these are all the same as being a petty jerk, sure
I feel to some extent that Jennifer is basically lucky she didn’t do anything like that – her actions are less harmful not because she has a better nature, but because her toxicity found less harmful outlets.
Billifers toxic but she’s not a bigot (not actively at least, she’s still a sheltered white passing Midwestern rich girl in desperate need of some education). I wouldn’t say it’s lucky she never did those things bc as bad as she can be, I don’t think it’d occur to her to be that outright evil. Like don’t get it twisted, billies a bongo, Mary is genuine evil.
It varies according to country. But the standard is that therapists are under no obligation to, and depending on the country it can even be considered breaking confidentiality laws.
The exceptions are for cases of future planned child abuse and acts of terrorism, at least as far as the UK goes.
In most U.S. States (incl. Indiana) conversations with a credentialed therapist are generally confidential, and can only be revealed under court order (or with the client’s consent) . . . and such court orders can only be issued under specific circumstances.
For instance, in Florida, where I practice, a therapist can only break confidentiality if the client tells them about either 1) an ongoing or impending (NOT completed) crime against any minor or an elderly or disabled adult, or 2) a crime or threat of crime (implied or explicit) against the therapist who is breaking confidentiality.
Got a head start in taking care of himself after running away from his mob family? Have the cast has shitty families but it looks like he was the first to try cut himself off from his, even if he can get dragged back in. Probably took a lot of introspection in his teen years and a realization of “I want better than this, I deserve better than this. I can be better”
I wish Activision would rerelease the War for Cybertron games. Heck, not even a remaster. Just a basic port for X1/PS4, and a straight-up rerelease minus DRM on Steam.
Maybe anti-cheat. Maybe. If it also comes with a no-anti-cheat EXE for lots and lots of mods.
Yeah it’s kind of crazy there’s no way to legally play those games on modern hardware. Some of the best Transformers games ever are essentially lost media. Equally crazy no one’s decided to develop more Transformers video games in the shooter genre, or really at all. I think there’s a rts game that came out a while ago but that’s been it for years.
Are the original installers broken on modern PCs, or are they just out of print?
Could they theoretically re-release them on GOG with the DRM removed? They carry games that are much older than that. If they run fine on modern PCs, the big hurdle would be licensing.
The problem is that the games have been delisted. I’m not sure on the technical hurdles, but it does have emulations that run pretty easily. That’s technically “piracy” though and not many people have the knowledge to run emulations even though it’s fairly easy on modern computers.
As to why it’s not been re-released by the publisher? The answer could be anything. Hasbro has expressed interest in a re-release, but the games are owned by Activision Blizzard. Probably just think there’s not a lot of money in re-releasing a couple of niche games over a decade old.
I get the Vibe that while he has done some seriously messed up stuff in the past, probably because of his family, the dude has chilled out and tried to become better.
I have the impression that Asher has simply already processed it all and managed to sort out a few things before the others. Only his blindness to jeniffer surprises me
Like Thag Simmons said earlier, he’s got the “I can fix him” trait; and also remember
1- He was brought up in a way toxic and narcissistic environment
2- He “wants to do better”. He probably… holy shit, this is familiar, he probably holds onto very tightly to the idea people can be better if they put in the work.
Which is right, imho, just. Jennifer hasn’t… quite… put in the work :’DD Not in the healthy way skdjgs
Asher is trying to be a decent guy, if nothing else.
He’s got a lot of baggage from how his folks raised him and he’s still working through all that, but that’s true for most of our main characters. His situation is a lot higher stakes than the rest, admittedly, and his status as a late introduced secondary character means he’s more likely to fail than the rest, but at least for now he’s not hopeless.
Lots of career criminals are “decent dudes” so long as you are not the target of one of their crimes. They don’t just go around being generally shitty to people. Crime is their PROFESSION, and like most people, they behave differently in a professional setting than in a social one.
I know Asher has been an accessory to crimes and very likely committed a few, I have a hard time seeing him as a “career criminal”, regardless of his ties. And he appears to be seeking a new “profession” from what little details we have on him.
Yeah, I understand that Asher is a legal adult now, but he’s been that for like…five minutes. Up until right now, he was a child who had as much say as any child in what he did with his life, which is to say very little. Dad tells you to drop this off with your uncle, you do it. Grandpa threatens your friends unless you make a call, you do it- and that’s a situation that would be overwhelming for an independent adult, never mind an adolescent raised with skewed norms around acceptable behavior and obedience. Asher seem to want a normal life for himself. Frankly, I’m not even mad that he took from his family to make that possible, because they’re the ones who set him back and appear to want to keep him back with regards to going legit. Godspeed you, kid, get out and don’t look back. I only hope it doesn’t bring him and/or his loved ones to ruin later on.
I believe (although I might be wrong) that Ethan was created on Shortpacked! to be DW’s mouthpiece, although I think he realised that he was actually a lot more like Amber (at least on that series).
I could get into this as a long term ship. Sometime to allow for the inevitable breakup with Jennifer, then either some time until starting a relationship OR an immediate hookup that later ends up serious with Ethan, maybe a kind of quiet, supporting each other relationship, instead of making out in the halls?
The closest comparison for someone I’ve had in my life similar to Asher was my college roommate’s brother. My roommate and I were close friends, so I got to know her brother well. He’d done many horrible things as a teenager, vandalism, and assault, and was only a year removed from another charge. He was turning his life around, but he was always the voice of moral choice around us. His reasoning was that he’d done pretty awful things so he didn’t want anyone else to make bad choices if they could help it.
He went on to work in rehabilitation for other ex-felons.
It’s not like Asher has people killed for shits and giggles, as far as we can see. He seems to be trying to distance himself from the mob. But Blaine blackmailed him or something, and was an obvious violent sociopath to boot. Blaine invoked mob context, and got dealt with the mob way. Asher might see it as self-defense, or cleanup, or something.
Even fully active mob types can have morals or standards, like “don’t cheat on your wife” or “don’t sell drugs to kids”
People act like Asher was out here gunning down nuns for shiggles. The guy he had pulled down was a violent, wife beater who blackmailed him into helping him kidnap what was essentially a group of college women(excluding two people.) for revenge. A fucked up thing to do, yes. A villain that all the DOA characters need to be weary of because his dubious and nefarious nature? Nothing about his characterization has screamed that at all. Mary is more intimidating.
Yeah like…I’m not saying that everything Asher has done was morally impeccable, but he was also a child for most of it. A child raised in an environment not conducive to what most would call good behavior. How hard are we realistically gonna be on a child? Especially since, from what we know, when Asher hit the age of reason, he started trying to distance himself from the crime. He’s not really so different from Joyce in that he grew up in a skewed environment and needed a fairly short amount of time to deprogram himself. Whatever he did with regard to Blaine seemed to be under some amount of duress on Asher’s part, and also, have you *met* Blaine? A violent kidnapper, lifelong domestic abuser, and unabashed mob stooge who took joy in hurting others was stopped, which I think is a net win for humanity even if the means weren’t exactly squeaky-clean. Asher seems to have kept to the right path since and that ought to count for something.
Sure, he wasn’t “gunning down nuns,” but he was an accomplice to a murder! Yes, the murder of a pretty lousy human being, but still a human being! (I feel like Jimmy Stewart right now.)
My assumption is that he reported it to the family then got told to handle it using family resources. So not doing it on his own initiative, but still responsible. That’s why it was reported to him when it was done.
Also potentially a way of pulling him back in towards the family business
… Booster will know this and their approval is going to know no bounds, isn’t it. ASHER PASSED THE VIBE CHECK??
Like, Ethan went full-on “come to the dark side we’ve got makeouts and self-loathing” and Asher went like “what about kissing you without the latter. one day.” It’s super sweet :’33
His shittiness during that awful breakfast aside, Asher’s really growing on me as of late. Really hope he pulls away from Jennifer, and Raidah’s group in general.
I do kinda think Ethan’s shot himself in the foot bigtime here as far as any future fun times with Asher though. Someone pushing themselves onto you like that (The verbal pushiness, not the surprise kiss, though that could have also gone very poorly) has got to be a huge turn-off/red flag.
Is it bad that I kind of want Asher to break up with Jennifer? She is so horrible to him. And while I can not quite forget his role in the kidnapping and subsequent events, maybe he really is trying to be a good guy now?
I think people ignore that Asher was, if I remember correctly, *threatened* into playing that role. Yes, it still wasn’t great, but it wasn’t something he wanted to do. So far, Asher fits pretty tidily amongst our cast of “poor dumbass teenagers making terrible decisions”.
i respect asher for not being the unfaithful type however i must admit i am disappointed about the fact the odds of a fun little cheating plotline are looking low at the moment
I want to have faith in Asher as well. But the fact that he called in a hit on Blaine means he still has connections with his grandfather, and the whole “washing his hands of the mob” is not true. Maybe he truly did try to get away but got pulled back in because of Blaine, maybe it was a bluff because they knew they were getting known and wanted to have plausible deniability for his grandson to take the reins. Still hoping he’ll try to be good in the end.
Asher keeps showing such a suspicious attitude (I mean, acute depressive self-destruction is hot?) while acting perfectly decent. Maybe even. . .too perfect. No he just can’t win with me, at least not before his part in the murders is dealt with and we know for sure how out of the mob he is.
Depends on how vulnerable you are to predators. It is basically the reproductive strategy of aphids. Of course, Ethan is unlikely to be eaten alive by ladybugs so he should probably start working on his mental health.
My younger kid complained to me that a very cute, extremely flirty guy rejected him the other night on the premise that he (other guy) was straight. I argued that it was less depressing than being rejected by a gay guy just because he’s not into you. True, he said, except dude was totally gay – just scared. Small town, we both sighed.
So confused with everyone up-thumbing and back-clapping Asher today. I didn’t imagine yall were so serious about your “cheating bad” stance as to enjoy a hot character in a dramedy comic literally titled “kids making bad calls” choosing not to fuck just because that would allegedly be “””wrong””
“Ugh, SELF-CARE? MEH”
funny how being “good” = being Walky (by funny, I mean, absolutely INFURIATING for Jennifer lolololol)
Asher getting into an “I can fix him” romance isn’t that surprising. That he’s the one doing the fixing though, can’t say I called that.
If it wasn’t for the whole connection-to-the-Korean-mob-kidnapping-of-his-schoolmates-death-of-a-rotten-bastard thing, Asher would be one of the most got-it-together characters in the story.
“Every time I get out of the drama, it keeps pulling me back in!“
Yeah. I feel like there’s some background “Asher had a wakeup call” story coming…
Asher will tell Jennifer about this and she will insult him for being a loser for staying faithful.
Of course she will, because Jennifer is basically Mary with the serial numbers filed off.
must’ve missed the part where jennifer maliciously misgendered a trans person, blackmailed a suicidally depressed person for being a lesbian, and tried to prevent said suicidally depressed person from receiving treatment to extend said blackmail
these are all the same as being a petty jerk, sure
Roller skaters are a menace and Mary masturbates to Ronald Regan. Everything Mary does is justified and she is perfect.
It happened slightly out of frame you just didn’t see it
much like the hyperbole in the previous commentThey’re both bongos, but they’re very different sorts of bongo and one is much, much worse than the other.
No, Mary would insult him for considering it. She’d praise the being faithful part.
Praise? No. Maybe backhanded ‘praise’ while making homophobic remarks and generally asserting her moral superiority
Imagine if THAT is what makes her break up with him
I fully believe Asher will tell her, she’ll react that he’s not BAD BOY enough, and he’ll dump her.
And then Jennifer will be confused that people dump HER.
Why does asher have the most mental health here
People with money get therapy?
Checks out^
Perhaps. But Asher’s family has criminal ties. It may be a stereotype but I can’t imagine mental health being a big thing in that environment
*Stares in “the Sopranos was a whole thing”*
Wasn’t his getting therapy a dangerous secret for him?
It also made him a more effective criminal, though.
have you watched the sopranos
I wasn’t aware it was a documentary.
Eh, Becky seems mostly okay for being a broke teen. She’s got her hangups but she’s a lot more aware of hers.
That qualification’s doing a lot of work there.
And Becky has long practice at pretending to be fine, covering up childhood abuse.
Perhaps, but therapy means him telling secrets…
I don’t know if therapist can hold criminals secrets from their patients.
It varies according to country. But the standard is that therapists are under no obligation to, and depending on the country it can even be considered breaking confidentiality laws.
The exceptions are for cases of future planned child abuse and acts of terrorism, at least as far as the UK goes.

I mean, there’s two people here and Ethan’s really not doing so well.
He’s had the least amount of (on-screen) trauma?
It’s good to not be in the main cast.
I think some undeserved nerd rage is exactly what he needs.
Less fun, but not NOT fun
“Take care of yourself, Ethan. Normally, that’s an empty platitude, but with you, I think you need the occasional reminder.”
I think i know what piece of Willis resides in Ethan 😗
Also i may not type here much tonight ’cause my dominant hand is swollen 😖😭
Is “speech to text” an option?
But what about the submissive and breed-able hand?
*flees*
hahaha ngl that made me chuckle
ah well, doing laundry it with ol’ lefty tonight i guess
I get the feeling the feeling you have seen some Telepurte videos.
For most people that’s the same hand.
What’s even happening on the Transformers wiki right now?…..I wish they’d make a real sequel to the war for cybertron games.

They probs wont ’cause capitalism — porting over a game that old and publishing it would probably cost more than what they’d make back 😗
New cartoon episodes right? The one with at least two ex-GOT guys doing voice work in it.
Consider me pleasantly surprised by Asher here.
Ethan you need to get out more.Wait no, not like that. He has a girlfriend!
Is Asher actually a decent guy? 🤔
As decent as a guy we shouldn’t trust can be.
I get the Vibe that while he has done some seriously messed up stuff in the past, probably because of his family, the dude has chilled out and tried to become better.
I have the impression that Asher has simply already processed it all and managed to sort out a few things before the others. Only his blindness to jeniffer surprises me
…Or his patience with her.
I don’t think Asher thinks he can fix Jennifer. A part of him thinks she’s fixing him.
Porque no los dos? Mutual fixing
🎵 Mutual fixing is something that’s good for me
(@Laura made me do it)
Hee hee!
Possibly rather than “better” he thinks of it as “I want less danger in my life.”
Maybe he is just being polite instead of saying “I follow the policy of never sleeping with someone crazier than myself.”
Lots of career criminals are “decent dudes” so long as you are not the target of one of their crimes. They don’t just go around being generally shitty to people. Crime is their PROFESSION, and like most people, they behave differently in a professional setting than in a social one.

I guess it’s nice that Asher is a decent dude but sometimes even decent dudes still can’t be trusted. We should all remember that.
Is Ethan also autobiographical? Because I think Ethan is also autobiographical.
I think each character is a piece of Willis.
Ethan is probably the guy who reverts all of his jokes on the transformers wiki that he wants to fight/smooch.
Here’s hoping the Blaine and Toe dad pieces were killed off with their characters.
Those were never 1st-person-POV characters
I never thought they were.
I was just playing off GholaHalleck.
I believe (although I might be wrong) that Ethan was created on Shortpacked! to be DW’s mouthpiece, although I think he realised that he was actually a lot more like Amber (at least on that series).
If you told me 5 years ago that Asher was going to become one of the more morally upright characters in the comic, I’d have laughed at you.
I could get into this as a long term ship. Sometime to allow for the inevitable breakup with Jennifer, then either some time until starting a relationship OR an immediate hookup that later ends up serious with Ethan, maybe a kind of quiet, supporting each other relationship, instead of making out in the halls?
okay, now I can see this comment and not my other comment when I ctrl+f. Weird.
NEVERMIND, I just didn’t see the update go by, my comments were on yesterday
Well at least some of him remains intact!
I do like that Ethan still has Transformers.
A Transformers fan will always be a transformers fan, the head death of the universe couldn’t stop that lol.
Dang it… it lagged and posted twice…
A Transformers fan will always be a transformers fan, the heat death of the universe couldn’t stop that lol.
Mmm… I prefer “head death”. “La petite mort”…
No no, you had it right. We’re talking Transformers, the universe probably has a head.
Time for some HEALING
“When I get thar feeling…”
Oh get with the programme, Asher, this is DUMBING of Age, not Asher Being Smart of Age.
Maybe being faithful to Jennifer and staying with her is the dumb decision?
Doesn’t mean impulsively making out with the first messed up guy who asks is the smart one.
Gotta put the dialogue from panel 1 on a t-shirt
Is the idea here that getting in a Transfomers wiki edit war will paper over the depression with rage?
How the hell is the guy who literally murdered a guy in a hospital bed now the moral compass?
The closest comparison for someone I’ve had in my life similar to Asher was my college roommate’s brother. My roommate and I were close friends, so I got to know her brother well. He’d done many horrible things as a teenager, vandalism, and assault, and was only a year removed from another charge. His reasoning was that he’d done pretty awful things so he didn’t want anyone else to make bad choices if they could help it.
He went on to work in rehabilitation for other ex-felons.
Awesome.
[applause]
His moral compass is a roulette wheel?
It’s not like Asher has people killed for shits and giggles, as far as we can see. He seems to be trying to distance himself from the mob. But Blaine blackmailed him or something, and was an obvious violent sociopath to boot. Blaine invoked mob context, and got dealt with the mob way. Asher might see it as self-defense, or cleanup, or something.
Even fully active mob types can have morals or standards, like “don’t cheat on your wife” or “don’t sell drugs to kids”
Also decently likely that Asher’s involvement was limited to bringing Blaine’s actions to the attention of the family.
Sure, he wasn’t “gunning down nuns,” but he was an accomplice to a murder! Yes, the murder of a pretty lousy human being, but still a human being! (I feel like Jimmy Stewart right now.)
The answer is, “He is a murderer but the person he murdered is Blaine. So, did he really do anything wrong?”
professional have standards
Wait, did I miss the bit where Asher literally murdered someone? I thought Blaine was murdered by a cop?
Asher was involved enough to get informed that it was done. At best he’s an accessory to the murder, at worst he ordered the hit himself
He was, Asher just put the call in to his family. People might be compounding that moment in their memory since its been a few years now.
My assumption is that he reported it to the family then got told to handle it using family resources. So not doing it on his own initiative, but still responsible. That’s why it was reported to him when it was done.
Also potentially a way of pulling him back in towards the family business
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2020/comic/book-10/04-is-a-song-forever/blammo/ pretty strongly implies that he ordered the hit.
Especially as it’s a callback to https://www.dumbingofage.com/2020/comic/book-10/03-when-it-crumbles/gone-too/ where Blaine had apparently ordered him to pull the fire alarm, to get everyone out of the building to enable the kidnapping.
… yeah, now I’m feeling kindof hypocritical.
Let’s not pretend murdering Blaine is anything but a morally upstanding act
Um, we haven’t seen or heard of the bent cop in a long time.
From 63.5 to 0. Good on ya, Asher. Get your sitch straight with Jennifer first.
…
THEN you can make out with Ethan.
… Booster will know this and their approval is going to know no bounds, isn’t it. ASHER PASSED THE VIBE CHECK??
Like, Ethan went full-on “come to the dark side we’ve got makeouts and self-loathing” and Asher went like “what about kissing you without the latter. one day.” It’s super sweet :’33
mental health win! the worst person you know advised that the two of you not participate in the self-destructive behavior that brings you joy!
I can’t help but feel like if Jennifer hears about this she’s gonna be more disappointed Asher didn’t keep going.
Yep, she heavily implied after Sal confronted her about Asher that she wanted him to cheat to ‘inject the drama into her veins.’
He did probably arrange for Blaine’s death. Or if he did not arrange for it, he wanted to be informed of it. (Which- fair? Blaine did threathen him).
Really, all we know is that he’s probably trying to distance his family and mob ties.
Also, Ethan…
Wash. Your. FAAAAACE.
And brush your teeth before you run up and kiss someone!
i respect asher for not being the unfaithful type however i must admit i am disappointed about the fact the odds of a fun little cheating plotline are looking low at the moment
it’s 3rd date material, ethan. 3rd.
I gotta say, I actually hope Asher turns his life around and is a good person from here on out. This could be a great start.

Asher and Joe are the great example of boys that can improve themselves, being better than yesterday.
“Live fast, die young” sure is a motto but do you want to live it?
Depends on how vulnerable you are to predators. It is basically the reproductive strategy of aphids. Of course, Ethan is unlikely to be eaten alive by ladybugs so he should probably start working on his mental health.
It is definitely one sick motto though.
Aphids are cute.
I might be influenced by that grounded game tho
Asher doing better, becoming better.
And wasting it on Billie of all people.
Trading one self-destructive habit with another, I suppose.
Asher is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters and I’m not sure what to do about that
Asher is a good egg… :O
<3 😀
Ethan, GO TO THERAPY!!!!!
I for one am devastated
If the characters don’t teach me how to behave, how will I have morals?
You get them from the fear of a big guy in the sky who will have you tortured for eternity if you don’t kiss his ass energetically enough, duh!
