I’m trying to work out if anything from Las Locuras del Emperador/The Emperor’s New Groove applies to me. But I’m coming up empty-handed. I guess maybe I aspire to be as chill as Pacha? He DOES make a good parental figure for Cuzco? But I like the movie more for Yzma and Kronk than Pacha or Cuzco, so I dunno.
There is no reason to just aspire to be a mad scientist. Between inexpensive genetic engineering, machine learning with graphic cards, and the general state of technology nowadays, it’s no more expensive to be a mad scientist than many other hobbies.
The Emperor’s New Groove doesn’t need any excuses. It’s a buddy road trip comedy that just so happens to be a Disney animated movie. It’s an underrated gem that gets left off the Disney Renaissance list because it didn’t make 4x its budget at the box office. In this essay I will
The challenge for me is thinking of a movie that I would consider my favorite. I’m usually more of a tv-series person than a movie person. The only movies I rewatch with great frequency for myself tend to be ones attached to a tv series.
All that said, upon consideration, I think mine is Adolescence of Utena. I’ve always seen myself reflected in Anthy, and I aspire to be part of a lesbian-powered motorcycle someday.
My favorite movie has changed over time, as I’ve gotten older and new ones have come out. That said, pretty much all of them would be “aspirational”; my own life is, by design, as boring as I can make it. In that regard, I suppose one of my choices – the original animated The Hobbit – is reflective.
To be fair, when I was that age, my answer to ‘Favourite movie’ was ‘The Last Samurai, for I too long to shoot at Tom Cruise with a gatling gun.’. Not every kid considers a question seriously and with any sort of depth!
Some ppl are into fashion though, but idk how many ‘classic’/pre late 2000s movies would appeal to becky’s tastes. Maybe “Bound” if she discovered that lol
Though I half expected her to say something dino related b/c of dina lol
It makes sense if you’re desperately looking for representation, possibly before knowing quite what’s up with yourself. Or if you just like the movie a lot, because it’s a super fun movie, and also you want an answer where you get to announce I’M A LESBIAN. Which Becky is. She’s a lesbian. Have you heard?
Considering I don’t think that the new Baldur’s Gate game is even out of early access still, I have given up on knowing when games will finally be out.
Albeit how common it is to see in gave-dev, I still feel guilty about getting people’s hopes up only to not deliver on time because of events nobody could predict.
Considering what you said, I don’t think I’ll even bother giving ETAs anymore, although I do intend to post updates on Twitter.
It’s hilarious to me that Nintendo got so paranoid over Sony’s increasing influence that they said “No thanks on that Play Station thing, actually. We’re gonna help invent YouTube Poop instead”.
There’s probably a few. What I mean is, after cutting off the Play Station deal with Sony, Nintendo turned to Phillips for their CD attachment, which resulted in 3 iconically terrible Zelda titles (“I wonder what’s for dinner?”) and Hotel Mario (“I hope she made lotsa spaghetti!”), and that’s more or less all Nintendo got out of that situation. Well, that and one of their longest-standing competitors, since Sony reforged their Play Station like the shards of Narsil, dropped the space between the words, and awakened the sleeping primordial might of the Square button.
Always better to wait and release a working game than a buggy one. I just feel like it has been years now, partially due to covid, and I don’t know if they are even going to bother to release the non early access at this point.
I guess her relationship with the dentist is going well? It’s probably consistently reassuring that Becky’s largely landed on her feet, too. And no other runaways have landed in Leslie’s lap.
I really hope it’s not that dentist. I much prefer not knowing for sure and believing it’s some other nice lady that treats Leslie with respect over the chronic criticizer.
Leslie’s relationship joys and woes seem (narratively) important enough as something that Becky sets her own standards against that I feel like it’d come up. So more hoping that anything like that has fallen by the wayside as they’ve started to mesh in the relationship.
Well she’s apparently in a stable relationship hopefully not with Anna, her lesbian pseudo-daughter is thriving and no longer homeless, and she no longer has an annoying congresswoman squatting at her house and making her part of a public scandal. Oh, and she’s not teaching a class that has pre character development Joe or Walky in it. I’d be pretty happy with that status quo.
I mean, depends on the character. Do you aspire to free yourself and others from the shackles of traditional academia? Make artwork of huge dongs? Or of course, blow shit up with your mind? It’s been a while but I think the only truly wrong answer is “be a good con artist”.
But which Godzilla movie though? There’s like more than 30 of them and they all have different themes. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla says different things than Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla or Godzilla 1998.
I watched a video recently about why Be Prepared is such a good song, and one of the things that was brought up in it is that it acts as a mirror for Simba’s I just Can’t Wait to be King, which came right before it. Simba and Scar had quite a bit in common. Both liked the idea of having the power but didn’t know or care about the weight of the responsibilities that came with it, and were, in a way, lazy. Simba just managed to be a better per..lion in the end.
The main difference between watching Back to the Future as a kid and watching it as an adult is that when you’re an adult you know what sexual assault is and you wonder why the fuck 1985-2* Lorraine is okay with Biff being anywhere near her
*I would say “1985A” but that one seems to be generally used to refer to the timeline where Biff is Donald Trump, which is the third version of 1985 created and should really be 1985B if we’re doing letters, with 85A as the first alteration; thank you for listening to my TED Talk
Because historically being the victim of sexual assault was seen as something shameful (via victim-blaming – if the victim had not been there/dressed differently/managed to diffuse/avoid getting in the spotlight of their assailant’s lust… 😡 and venerating virginity/viewing it as something tangible and integral to a woman’s worth so that losing it outside of marriage leaves her “damaged goods”, impure, etc… 🤮). Publicly acknowledging he attacked her, even in her own head, barely impacts his reputation (“of course healthy red-blooded males act like that! Boys will be boys, if girls don’t behave impeccably, it’s only natural for boys to get a bit wild and chase them!”) but completely destroys hers. Pretending like nothing happened (maybe acknowledging they went on a date and it didn’t go brilliantly?) and being polite and gracious and never letting on that she wants to rip his throat out with her teeth is in her best interests.
Look at all the crap they said in 2018 when Kavanaugh’s history came out. “Boys will be boys. Who can honestly say that when they were in their teens they didn’t do stuff like that; who cares?” In contrast, Ford received harassment and death threats forcing her to temporarily leave her home for her own safety for daring to go public… And I spent a lot of that summer trying to work out if setting strangers on fire in public was ACTUALLY overreacting or would be a genuine and proportionate proactive self-defence measure. (Partly influenced by medication-induced anxiety, but feeling like that in light of the news didn’t seem that irrational so it took me a while to work that one out.)
… The version where she marries him is harder to understand but I think I was in my teens last time I watched the film’s and I can’t remember if he tried to assault her in that timeline or not..? But IIRC she was widowed with 3 kids, and probably terrified about how she would afford to raise them? I could buy her thinking that her choices were to marry him, or be homeless with her kids in care, and that this was the lesser of the two evils ☹️
We live in a messed up world and women are very much expected to smile politely and keep the peace while socialising with people who have assaulted them.
All of this plus even the writers and various other staff on those films might /also/ be taking the sexual assault less seriously than they should be, ON TOP of all the reasons she would have to cover it up in-universe, so it may be an unreasonable reaction from today’s perspective AND a defensive measure!
Well, I thought of the TV series with Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg, so, dunno what that says about me other than I’m old. (But I could see that as aspirational for me.)
A. How do you see yourself or your aspirations reflected in it? (Fashion choices are a fine way.)
(P.S. — won’t be able to check back in — supposed to stay away from all screens for 3 weeks — doctors orders due to TBI. We’ll see how long I can last… 🙁 )
Picking just one favorite is hard, but lately I’ve been watching Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind a lot. Like, 7 times in the past month, sometimes back-to-back. That soundtrack kicks ass, especially when I’m stoned.
As for aspirations, I just wanna visit a cool mushroom forest and play funky synth music.
Since they were originally for trailers of all types, they have quite a bit of variety in genre for their music. I have been surprised when I recognize one of their songs in the background during a tv show or the weather.
How To Train Your Dragon is probably my favourite, and if it reflects any aspirations of mine it’s my desire to live in a starkly beautiful northern coastal town with fascinating and impressive local wildlife.
Q1. I probably have to go with Beauty and the Beast, specifically the 1991 Disney animated film. Loved it since I was a kid, generally prefer animated films to live action, and have never really had any experience matching getting to see it on the big screen when it got that 3D re-release a few years back. (I saw it in 2D, for Reasons.)
Q2. That one’s a lot harder to answer, and I’m not sure I really see my ambitions reflected in it per se. But I am a musician, and in that sense, the sheer amount of his soul that Howard Ashman poured into a film whose completion he wouldn’t live to see resonates with me. I’m not sure I worded that sentence very well, but there’s nothing quite like it.
I think that series is my favorite live action movies. The music in it is amazing (a lot of movies I like are partly due to good soundtracks). Fool Took always seems to let his curiosity get him into trouble. Nothing like blasting the Rhohirim (forgive my spelling) theme while driving.
As for in general, I like the Lion King (animated, cgi got the animal emotional expression weird) and the Kung Fu Panda series (ranking 2nd>1st>>3rd, as the 3rd felt rushed and lacking). I tend to prefer movies with well developed or nuanced villains along with good endings (life is sad and bitter enough without making my entertainment the same).
1. I have decided that it counts if I say the DVD recording of the Broadway cast of “Into the Woods” is my favorite movie.
2. Oh, easy. I’m the Witch. “I’m not nice, I’m not good, I’m just RIGHT” has pretty much been my mantra ever since I was an unpopular, picked-on, self-hating, curve-ruining gifted child with a pathological obsession with accuracy and truth and an inability to relate to my peers on either an intellectual OR emotional level.
Also Bernadette Peters is a goddess given human form, I will die on this hill, but I will take you all down with me. 😉
Cheers from someone who had a similar childhood. I had a teacher that said that I was born 30. It’s a difficult spot to be in, and I hope that you are in a better spot now.
My favorite movie is 2001:A Space Odyssey. I never really thought about whether I find myself reflected in it—I just love the visuals and the underlying mystery of it. Maybe the aspirational part is wanting to know that there’s a higher level of consciousness in the universe that is helping the human race evolve.
A2: It may seem cheesy now, but as a young child that bull was absolutely terrifying to me. Seeing Amalthea not back down in the face of such a monstrosity was absolutely inspiring. I’ve never thought of myself as brave, but if I’m ever a tenth as courageous as she seemed then, I can feel proud of myself.
Ruth. Honey. Do not beat yourself up, it is EXTREMELY aspirational to wish to rise from the sea and bring a twilight and end to the world of Man, a mountain walking or stumbling
Not gonna lie, my first thought was “how is Godzilla not aspirational? There are people who WOULDN’T like to be a gigantic amphibious lizard with radioactive breath and a cute butterfly girlfriend?”
Hm. I wouldn’t characterize it as a “favorite movie”, but the one I tend to go back to for cheap fun is National Treasure. If I were to try to see myself reflected in it, it’d be as Riley, though I’d concede that Ben Gates has a facet or two I find aspirational.
For example, I would not mind duct taping my dad to a chair and stealing his car. I’m not sure why I’d bother, but I’d be down for it.
I’m a little surprised at how insecure Leslie still seems to feel about her “favorite mom” status compared to Robin. Like, yeah, Robin’s the “fun mom”, but she’s also a dumb asshole, and Leslie knows that. Or maybe that just makes it more galling that she’s not favored more.
You know, it’s kinda similar to how Dorothy feels about being friends with Joyce. I don’t know if that means anything, but it is interesting.
it can be frustrating when other ppl do things more effortlessly but i just also thought she was annoyed about how her and robin’s relationship worked out/didn’t really wanna hear about her ex
Q1. Probably my favorite movie is The Great Race. I always come back to it when I want a smile.
Q2. God, I hope my aspirations aren’t reflected in it. It’s a ridiculous movie. But I suppose I wouldn’t mind participating in a giant pie fight to some bespoke polka music.
guess there’ll be future tension with robin? maybe they’ll do an on/off again relationship but slightly more healthy than billie/jen’s if only because leslie’s more put together(for the most part) as a teacher compared to robin lol
Godzilla Ruth, now I have the scene from Godzilla vs Kong in my mind. The one where Godzilla blasts Kong and sets him on fire and then lets out that evil chuckle.
Leslie is always a little upset when something remember her about Robin and how they have some similarities. She really don’t want to think Robin is not just plain awful but has even some positive qualities. She just want her out of her life, but she has to see her everyday or hear about her from other people. Poor Leslie.
Is Short Circuit 2 aspirational? At it’s core it’s the story of an outcast seeking, and FINDING, acceptance in a normally harsh world. It’s basically a giant middle finger to every dystopian or tragic sci-fi story about an AI who either tries to conquer humanity or is destroyed by humans who failed to understand them and that’s part of the reason I love it.
I ended up ranting about my favourite movie twice since yesterday. Both times because the topic of Catholicism and suicide came up and I Can. Not. Help. Myself. ‘Wristcutters: A Love Story’ is the absolute best depiction of depression and recover I have ever seen and people get so uncomfy when I wanna talk about it. I just wanna talk about it.
(First time I tried was last night at a halloween movie night watching Constantine (2005) which pissed me off bc suicide=hell=grandpa peeve. Second time was tonight discussing s/h with a woman at a punk bar when she saw my scars.)
Does this mean between the 3 of them they are probably entitled to signed by hand letter of thanks whoever receives residuals or income from back to the future views?
Really ?
I admit, my response is, “Are there many lesbians in the Coast Guard?”
(all I remember is the life preserver joke)
Same (look down), and you told it better.
so on THOSE criteria, mine is Turning Red after all
those are absolutely my aunties (although my aunties are on the Japanese side, but Grandma Wu’s definitely my grandma)
Or maybe I just aspire to be an evil mad scientist.
That would be SPLENDID. 😍
Or, perhaps you aspire to be a llama?
Here’s a llama
There’s a llama
And another little llama
Fuzzy llama, funny llama
Llama, llama, duck!
There is no reason to just aspire to be a mad scientist. Between inexpensive genetic engineering, machine learning with graphic cards, and the general state of technology nowadays, it’s no more expensive to be a mad scientist than many other hobbies.
Do you have to aspire to be something in a movie if it’s just that you enjoy the humor from it?
Leslie assigned the homework; I’m just trying to complete it!
It’s a fun thought exercise, at any rate.
Aspiring isn’t necessary, but it helps.
The Emperor’s New Groove doesn’t need any excuses. It’s a buddy road trip comedy that just so happens to be a Disney animated movie. It’s an underrated gem that gets left off the Disney Renaissance list because it didn’t make 4x its budget at the box office. In this essay I will

My favorite movie is The Godfather and I don’t think I even want to know what that says about me
That great film making appeals to you. And remember, alway leave the gun but take the cannoli.
Im PRETTY sure Aliens is aspirational, theres no way Im as cool as Ripley. Or the alien for that matter.
My favorite movie has changed over time, as I’ve gotten older and new ones have come out. That said, pretty much all of them would be “aspirational”; my own life is, by design, as boring as I can make it. In that regard, I suppose one of my choices – the original animated The Hobbit – is reflective.
Kinda weird to base your favorite movie on how the main character dresses.
What if your favorite movie is Iron Man?
Now I want to see Iron Man: Peak Lesbian Fashion.
To be fair, when I was that age, my answer to ‘Favourite movie’ was ‘The Last Samurai, for I too long to shoot at Tom Cruise with a gatling gun.’. Not every kid considers a question seriously and with any sort of depth!
This would fall in the Aspirational category
Some ppl are into fashion though, but idk how many ‘classic’/pre late 2000s movies would appeal to becky’s tastes. Maybe “Bound” if she discovered that lol
Though I half expected her to say something dino related b/c of dina lol

Nah, 90% of the time I modelled myself after movie characters or musicians. I still do, but now they’re niche enough no one notices.
Although my “favourite movie’ used to just mean “whatever one with whoopie goldberg or queen latifa I remember at this exact moment” was

🎃Hope you are all having a great Halloween weekend so far!
😔 Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, the horror game i planned isn’t coming soon. Probably not even by Christmas. Maybe Valentine’s day?
Considering I don’t think that the new Baldur’s Gate game is even out of early access still, I have given up on knowing when games will finally be out.
Albeit how common it is to see in gave-dev, I still feel guilty about getting people’s hopes up only to not deliver on time because of events nobody could predict.
Considering what you said, I don’t think I’ll even bother giving ETAs anymore, although I do intend to post updates on Twitter.
Better late than Sonic ’06, I always say.
Does it beat Link and the faces of evil?
It’s hilarious to me that Nintendo got so paranoid over Sony’s increasing influence that they said “No thanks on that Play Station thing, actually. We’re gonna help invent YouTube Poop instead”.
There is a YouTube Poop game? Man! I am so far out of the loop.
You feel this way because you are a good being, and should be rewarded with patience.
🥹 thank you
Does Leslie seem.. Like… Happier lately?
Maybe her dates went well finally
You’ve got to leave something for future narrative development.
she seemed to be into the negging? or at least i imagine it’s more of a casual hookup/fling as opposed to like moving in together
I’d be pretty happy with that status quo.
she’s definitely still dating the dentist
…Ya know, she’s not wrong.
Meh, ack to the Future’s okay I guess.
I’d rather aspire to be Mothra
Eh, Mothra’s always the casualty. She either takes the bullet or dies giving another monster her powers.
Yeah, but she looks damn good doin’ it.
Her wings are very pretty, I’ll give her that.
–But it might just save your life!
That’s the Power of Love!

Yeah, Godzilla is soooo one semester ago. Now it’s more _______
Peak — now cut that out
So Becky’s a sailor? That’s why she’s got the life preserver?
I don’t get it. Is there a human meme thing I missed?
In Back to the Future (1), people in 1955 constantly mistake Marty’s orange jacket for a life vest.
“is being susiezilla something you think about a lot?”
No Ruth, Godzilla was the perfect choice
But which Godzilla movie though? There’s like more than 30 of them and they all have different themes. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla says different things than Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla or Godzilla 1998.
And yet somehow, they all feature Bryan Cranston. Except for the 1998 one, which features that one guy who killed an Irish family in 1987.
They had it coming.
No, I have no idea what I’m talking about.

Favorite movie is Lion King idk what that says about me. I wanna be lion royalty?
Remember who I am?
You overcame adversity to thrive in an unconventional upbringing?
Maybe it means that you value a good villain above all else?
(Side note: I recently watched Lion King for the first time in over a decade, and the way Scar manipulates Simba gives me major Head Alien vibes.)
I watched a video recently about why Be Prepared is such a good song, and one of the things that was brought up in it is that it acts as a mirror for Simba’s I just Can’t Wait to be King, which came right before it. Simba just managed to be a better per..lion in the end.
One more reason I knew the live-action Lion King was going to disappoint is that it’s so hard to teach actual hyenas to goose-step.
Took so much of the charge out of that number.
Kudos. Same for me, though I prefer the original cut without the morning report.
You want to be stepped on by wildebeests?
Well, if it’s a choice between that and being stepped on by the wildebeests’s geese …
Geese are mean.
Oh wait. It was the Hyenas that were stepping their geese, not the Wildebeests
You wanna see Hamlet but with animals and catchy musical numbers?
Everyone says it’s a Hamlet, but how similar is it really? I’m not familiar enough with Shakespeare to know.
The main difference between watching Back to the Future as a kid and watching it as an adult is that when you’re an adult you know what sexual assault is and you wonder why the fuck 1985-2* Lorraine is okay with Biff being anywhere near her

We live in a messed up world and women are very much expected to smile politely and keep the peace while socialising with people who have assaulted them.
Thank you for saying it in much more detail than I could have.

*geek approved*
She definitely isn’t wrong.
Not a lesbian, but I mean, I’d get the purple briefs if I could. Those are neat.
And now I can’t unsee it.
That’s as good an aspiration as any, Becky.
My favourite movie is The Avengers. I dunno what that says about me other than I love superheroes.
Who doesn’t aspire to be Thanos?
Not going to lie, I didn’t think of the Marvel one and thought it was about the Sean Connery one.
Well, I thought of the TV series with Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg, so, dunno what that says about me other than I’m old. (But I could see that as aspirational for me.)
Is Diana Rigg aspirational if you know she’s out of your league?
You aspire to be thawed out if you’re frozen in a block of ice?
With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
Oh noooo, there goes Tokyo! Go Go Godzilla! Yeaaaaaaah.
Probably too early for a game, no?
If not, please feel free to join in:
Q. What is your favorite movie?
A. How do you see yourself or your aspirations reflected in it? (Fashion choices are a fine way.)
(P.S. — won’t be able to check back in — supposed to stay away from all screens for 3 weeks — doctors orders due to TBI. We’ll see how long I can last… 🙁 )
Sorry, I meant
“Q2:”
Not “A”.
A: favorite movie is Fast Cheap and Out of Control.
A2: I see myself as the gardener: ready to create worlds out of fantasy.
Have you listened to anything by the group Two Steps From Hell? They might have some similar songs that you would enjoy.
Their stuff is alright, at least the few tracks I’ve heard in video game trailers.
I wish you a speedy recovery!
My favorite movie(s) is Lord of the Rings. I’ve always aspired to be a fool Took.
Or, equally valid, there’s a higher level of consciousness in the universe that we can blame everything on.
The Lion in Winter and I’m happy to say I don’t see myself reflected in it at all.
It seems a weird criteria to require for a favorite movie.
BTTF, because I aspire to change aspects of my life. But that’s a depressing answer.
I guess my next favorite movie is Blazing Saddles? Because I aspire to be that funny?
A1: The Last Unicorn
A2: It may seem cheesy now, but as a young child that bull was absolutely terrifying to me. Seeing Amalthea not back down in the face of such a monstrosity was absolutely inspiring. I’ve never thought of myself as brave, but if I’m ever a tenth as courageous as she seemed then, I can feel proud of myself.
1. Casablanca
2. Bogart. Enuf said.
I’m a wlw who has one of those jackets!
I should add that I originally acquired it for Dipper Pines cosplay tho
That’s okay. Dipper clearly got it for Marty McFly cosplay, so you’re all good.
I’m excited to hear Carla gush about Short Circuit 2
It wasn’t as good as the UltraCar movie though.
Unfortunately, Ultra Car never got a movie—her series was very short-lived, being canned in the middle of its first season as I recall.
Ruth. Honey. Do not beat yourself up, it is EXTREMELY aspirational to wish to rise from the sea and bring a twilight and end to the world of Man, a mountain walking or stumbling
Godzilla truly is a queer icon. (Sorry, straights, we’re taking that one too.)
Alright, fine, you can have Godzilla.
(butwe’rekeepingCaryGrant)
I’ve never seen or heard of a single thing I’m reading with that guy’s name attached, so you can keep ‘im.
Not gonna lie, my first thought was “how is Godzilla not aspirational? There are people who WOULDN’T like to be a gigantic amphibious lizard with radioactive breath and a cute butterfly girlfriend?”
Hard to understand, I know.
Push the button, Max!
Not that Button!
guess there’ll be future tension with robin? maybe they’ll do an on/off again relationship but slightly more healthy than billie/jen’s if only because leslie’s more put together(for the most part) as a teacher compared to robin lol
Godzilla Ruth, now I have the scene from Godzilla vs Kong in my mind. The one where Godzilla blasts Kong and sets him on fire and then lets out that evil chuckle.
I dunno what Godzilla movei it is from but I’m remembering Godzilla’s victory dance
Mine is the 1990 Ninja Turtles movie. Given I have three brothers and am adopted, it kind of makes sense that would resonate with me.
Leslie is always a little upset when something remember her about Robin and how they have some similarities. She really don’t want to think Robin is not just plain awful but has even some positive qualities. She just want her out of her life, but she has to see her everyday or hear about her from other people. Poor Leslie.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they got drunk and hooked up again lol
Neither I. But that would be terrible for both of them once sober up.
My favorite movie is Raiders of the Lost Ark. I guess I aspire to be an archeologist who fights Nazis.
As should we all lol
I definitely shouldn’t have said The End of Evangelion.
Aspiring to cosmic level incoherence is perfectly legitimate.
I thought grunge was the height of lesbian fashion. Flannel, boots and baggy jeans are still worn by Butch women to this day.
nothing wrong with the ‘classics’ but i wonder what kinda fashion trend gen z and beyond would have for pride outfits, fast fashion aside
Hmm what does National Treasure say about me?
You want them to put the Constitution back in the box?
