Iced tea aka sweet tea is the only tea in my book (unless I’m sick with a sore throat and need hot tea with honey, but since I’m sick, I’m probably just hallucinating that other tea exists).
It’s surprising how easy it is to get hot leaf juice wrong. Black tea and herbal at both prepped at boiling temperatures. Oolong, green, and white are prepped at lower temperatures, which is unlikely to happen at restaurants in the US unless it’s a tea specific shop due to them using something to heat the water for both tea and coffee (so I have heard). I’ve also heard that how hard (minerally) the water is can play into it too. Also bagged vs loose since they tend to crush the leaves for bagged tea while loose tends to be whole leaves. Hotter water than needed combined with crushed leaves results in bitter tea. Most people understandably don’t want to go through all that work in the US, so you either get used to bitter tea or just don’t drink it. If you really want to trigger some people in the UK, talk about microwaving a cup of water to put a bag of tea in and wait for the response.
Although I will not refuse a cuppa English Breakfast, or a well-brewed pot of Celestial Seasonings ‘Morning Thunder’ or ‘Sleepytime’ (depending on the time of day).
I assume you are referring to the ‘Morning Thunder’ option, which is actually black tea and South American maté. It does contain caffeine (about 45 milligrams per 8-ounce cup, which is roughly half the caffeine of regular coffee), but technically it is not coffee.
Morning Thunder is so good. I should pick up some more.
I’m partial to Tazo’s Pumpkin Chai and BigELow’s Salted Caramel teas. Though my MIL did get me some David’s Chocolate Chili tea, and it’s to die for. It even gives me heartburn, sometimes!
A well brewed pot of leaf tea with a heaped spoon of sugar and lashings of condensed milk for that sugar rush. Unfortunately Im not allowed sugar. Or cows milk…
Red Rose with tons of sugar and a splash of milk at breakfast only, otherwise straight no milk nor sugar the rest of the day. I was a toddler in Canada and that’s what brings me back, the milk and sugar. After I got older I started drinking my tea away from home and supplies of milk and sugar so that’s how I drank it. Now I just drink the store brand tea unless there’s another brand that’s cheaper.
English Breakfast with milk, no sugar very dependable and comforting but you can drink it so much it stops being an experience at all.
Earl Grey with or without milk, or Assam or Darjeeling with milk, adds a bit of variety back in and Earl Grey just seems good for when you want to focus and draw a line on getting things done.
Then there’s green tea, and all the ‘fake’ teas that do the job so they’re all right by me, Rooibos (which I have right now) , Nettle, Peppermint, Camomile, some herbal flavour mix that you’ve tried and currently like.
Yeah, its all about the mood I’m in for which one is best or my fave.
Chai is lovely, though there are some good lemon merengue and other sweet/fruity ones out there. Normally loose leaf has better flavor, and you have to be careful about Temps with certain types of tea. I had a Saje goddess goodness that they don’t make anymore that I really liked (rooibos, rosehip, hibiscus, raspberry, cinnamon, rose, raspberry flavoring, stevia leaf, cocoa nibs, and chocolate flavor if you want to homemake it). Some grocery stores in the US carry loose tea and spices/herbs/flowers that you can put into a bag/container and buy by weight.
I’m amused by the Flames losing because they were supposed to be a juggernaut challenged only by Colorado in the West, but I also HATE that Evander Kane doesn’t have to go play golf.
It’s cool though. Blues will complete the comeback and send the Oilers home.
Canada seems to function by Tim Hortons and a mixture of tea or coffee. Hockey and beer seem to play a part too. I still laugh about a time a Canadian talking about going to watch their team play in person in Arizona and they lost to Arizona. I didn’t even know that Arizona had a team.
What I never resolved from British tea drinking from the movies was that they were fastidious about making a pot of tea (“Bring the pot to the kettle – never the kettle to the pot.”) but dumbed it down to huge urns of tea in railway stations.
That would be a fun explanation for why the gang can never just have a fun angst free time at university, insidious agents are subtly sabotaging they’re social lives. Mr. O’Malley was never really a villain he was just trying to solve the energy crisis. Remember his sacrifice.
Nice to know that Ruth would have let the situation play out and just enjoyed it no matter what happened. Fortunately Carla has mistaken Joyce and Dorothy so the cat will stay in the bag just a bit longer.
I mean, there aren’t that many kids on the dorm, Ruth definitely knows who’s dating who, and Dina and Becky do tend to look Green and Orange respectively.
But why would he need to describe them? He’s worked with Becky for months. Maybe it’s his nickname for her, since she’s definitely Orange. Although if I were Becky, I might want to dye my hair more Carla red since the shit gibbon that was the president is beginning to taint the color orange
I’m gonna toss this out there, but maybe sometimes we don’t just let the worst people alive “own” things like an entire color. There are billions of good orange things, like Crash Bandicoot.
Here I thought I was missing out on Exotic PokemonGO gifts from far-flung corners of the globe when you stopped sending gifts to Pokefriends, but I guess they would have just been the same old Atlanta gyms and Pokestops I already get and send gifts from
Can’t help but notice that Jason has no actual response to Ruth’s “accusation,” here. Not even a “how dare you” or the equivalent, just annoyed silence.
There’s only so much indignation he can summon up in a single day, and between Becky, Dina, and Carla, it’s pretty much all used up. That glare was all he can manage right now, the poor man.
My current theory is that Jason’s mother is an American, and that she a) was kinder and less emotionally distant than Dargon was and b) is dead, prompting Jason to head to America to feel more of a connection with her (and escape his dad), only to realize too late that he actually despises the place.
Granted, very few of my theories turn out to be accurate, though I somehow predicted Liz showing up in “Sister, Christian” (scroll down to the replies) so who knows?
I mean, were we to make contact with intelligent Martian life, I’m pretty sure they’d take a lot more offense at It’s Walky! than at anything else Willis has written.
I genuinely love that Jason and Ruth are already at the comfort level of communicating ‘I register that you are fucking with me, allow me to register my annoyance, and now we move on’ via brief glares. It’s heartwarming.
You know how when you talk about video game characters and say “The red one and the green one” most people would automatically say its the Mario Bros?
Now i am wondering if Becky and Dina are the Mario Bros( or sisters) of this dorm. Random Person to a student passing by : “Hey do you know the orange and the green one?” – ” Well of course thats Becky and Dina”
I think to like really a lot Ruth and Jason as a couple now. He’s patience with her and allows her to do jokes that done by others person are unforgettable for him. Also, Ruth seems so happy and relaxed with him around ♡. I want to see more of them interacting! But now it’s time to Ruth and Carla to forms the ultimate alliance and inform Joyce! Dunno if Jason will try to stop her, but he will not succeed!
with the current revelation that her friends are not acknowledging her growth, Joyce might not be too happy to know that everyone is keeping the fact that Dina and Becky had sex from her.
In fairness, Becky’s reasons for asking everyone to keep it from her *do* take the new Joyce into account: the old Joyce would have been horrified and afraid for Becky’s soul, but now Becky’s just afraid Joyce is going to make fun of her for being a hypocrite.
Unfortunately, Joyce isn’t necessarily going to know about Becky’s motivations for keeping the secret, just that she did try to keep it. And that sucks.
I hope Carla spills the beans to Not-Joyce, and Dorothy has to do a Joyce impression, acting like she’s shocked so that Carla is satisfied with her cartoonish mischief. Shenanigans!
it would be funny if they released it but it was just a cinema painted on the side of a cliff

‘COYOTE VS ACME’ has been officially saved by Ketchup Entertainment, who bought the film for $50M
They plan to give the film a worldwide theatrical release in 2026.
do y'all remember when they found all that tf art in Osamu Tezuka's drawer post-mortem because I think about it often
anyway keep chasing your bliss and draw weird shit, god knows we need that right now
Today in #9ChickweedLane I learned that I have to weigh which is worse: the cartoonist already forgetting what this guy looks like one daily strip later, or that, yes, he's actually meant to be an old man, not a victim to an older cartoonist forgetting what young people look like
Like any average American, I’m for universal basic income and abolishing the police. I can’t get on board with these ultra-leftists calling for the universal hive mind, though!
maura quint@mauraquint.bsky.social ⋅ 1d
going to start calling myself a centrist and then listing all my leftist views as proof, just going to start moving the overton window by force
I've spent the past few days reading through the entire archive of @damnyouwillis.bsky.social's Dumbing of Age and this has been stuck in my head for about 90% of that time.
shit, someone who actually knows who’s who
what does England and/or Canada run on?
England: tea and biscuits.
Canada: Timbits.
What’s your favorite tea?
Adagio makes a lemon meringue green tea I order a bunch of every year, so probably that.
I can tolerate herbal tea. However, I am not really a fan of warm leaf juice.
Hey now, iced tea is still tea in my book! 🧋
Iced tea aka sweet tea is the only tea in my book (unless I’m sick with a sore throat and need hot tea with honey, but since I’m sick, I’m probably just hallucinating that other tea exists).
Not all iced tea is sweet tea. I drink iced tea unsweetened.
Gotta get that hot bean juice instead!
It’s surprising how easy it is to get hot leaf juice wrong. Black tea and herbal at both prepped at boiling temperatures. Tea. Earl Gray. Hot.
Although I will not refuse a cuppa English Breakfast, or a well-brewed pot of Celestial Seasonings ‘Morning Thunder’ or ‘Sleepytime’ (depending on the time of day).
There’s coffee in that nebula.
I assume you are referring to the ‘Morning Thunder’ option, which is actually black tea and South American maté. It does contain caffeine (about 45 milligrams per 8-ounce cup, which is roughly half the caffeine of regular coffee), but technically it is not coffee.

Dunkin’ Donuts vanilla chai!
A well brewed pot of leaf tea with a heaped spoon of sugar and lashings of condensed milk for that sugar rush. Unfortunately Im not allowed sugar. Or cows milk…

Yorkshire Tea
Bubble tea. Or chocolate bubble tea. Or pudding milk tea. Taiwan invented the stuff so they know how to do it right.
Ugh, I haven’t had a bubble tea I’ve actually enjoyed so far.
But it seems so fun, I’ll have to try again soon with this new place on the way to work.
A ginger and licorice blend that sadly I could only find at my old asian grocery.
It’s the worst when they stop making the kind you like or that you can’t find it in a new place.
I’m tea flexible myself.

Yeah, its all about the mood I’m in for which one is best or my fave.
And how could I forget to mention Lapsang Souchong. Talk about an acquired taste that ends up being the best taste.
For Canada, you forgot the raging hatred of the 6 Canadian hockey teams that aren’t your team.
Goddamn Oilers.
I’m amused by the Flames losing because they were supposed to be a juggernaut challenged only by Colorado in the West, but I also HATE that Evander Kane doesn’t have to go play golf.
It’s cool though. Blues will complete the comeback and send the Oilers home.
Oh well at least we’re not Toronto
Less timbits and more uhhh… hmm… maple syrup maybe?
Though timbits are good too.
Canada seems to function by Tim Hortons and a mixture of tea or coffee. Hockey and beer seem to play a part too. I still laugh about a time a Canadian talking about going to watch their team play in person in Arizona and they lost to Arizona. I didn’t even know that Arizona had a team.
Tea and Tim Hortons.
The British Empire famously ran on tea.
What I never resolved from British tea drinking from the movies was that they were fastidious about making a pot of tea (“Bring the pot to the kettle – never the kettle to the pot.”) but dumbed it down to huge urns of tea in railway stations.
“That’s it!!! THAT’S THE LOOK!!!! HA HA HA HA HA!!!”
Oh noes
*plays E.L.O.’s “Fire on High” on the hacked Muzak*
Great song!!!
Love it! That was the purple-vinyl B side to Sweet Talking Woman.
*wonders where the 45s ended up*
I don’t think that Petty Misenthropy has definitive units but if it did I’d say the dorm runs on about 5 to 3 Kilo-Zuckerbegs.
So eight Mike’s, three Malaya’s, two Mary’s and a Carla’s worth.
Yes.
Massive amounts, ever since an engineering student figured out how to generate electricity from college student drama.
This floor alone is powering half of Illinois.
Only half? Someone needs to pull the drama tag.
That would be a fun explanation for why the gang can never just have a fun angst free time at university, insidious agents are subtly sabotaging they’re social lives. Mr. O’Malley was never really a villain he was just trying to solve the energy crisis. Remember his sacrifice.
This is the least straightforward remake of Monsters Inc ever.
It’s a serial. Every appraise ends with him lovingly staring at a photo of Amber.
*begins playing Doctor Who theme on hacked muzak*
But which one?
A slightly less amount than it runs on spite.
Fair.
No. Bad Ruth. Let the kids pretend they have secrets.
Quick, Jason: distract her with your dry wit and Englishman charms!
Nice to know that Ruth would have let the situation play out and just enjoyed it no matter what happened. Fortunately Carla has mistaken Joyce and Dorothy so the cat will stay in the bag just a bit longer.
Was the cat ever really in the bag?
In a Joyce sized bag, yes.
Well yeah except who does Dorothy tend to hang out with and just might have a Big Argument with soon? That’s right, our favourite friend Joyce!
I like that Ruth can be given such a terrible description and figure out from that who is who.
the request itself helps too
She actually can be a genuinely good RA, when she’s not constantly struggling just to keep herself alive.
Because he’s worked with her for months, but he works at Galasso’s. He’s heard “Orange One” more often than her name.
I’m gonna toss this out there, but maybe sometimes we don’t just let the worst people alive “own” things like an entire color. There are billions of good orange things, like Crash Bandicoot.
“Off the scale” is traditional, though that just means you need better gauges.
No nsfw tonight. I’m at a con.
Have fun!
A con?!?!?!
Yaaayy!!!!!! 🥳
What kind of con?
A momo con. Whatever momo means.
Didn’t know they had a con for flying lemurs
You mean, Lord Momo of the Momo Dynasty? His Momoness?
Peach!
“Ah! Ma belle pêche! There’s no need to tremble like that…”
I’m now imagining a convention hall full of Albedo.
….
… I’ll be in my bunk.
“Ceci n’est pas un pipe”
“YES it is” -slurp-
Momo is a steamed dumpling. From which I conclude Yotomoe is currently in Atlanta.
At the risk of doxing myself I am just a little bit outside of Atlanta.
Waaiiiiiiit you’re HERE in fuckin ATLANTA?!
I’m a native Georgian :3
and a peach of a fellow.
He could be any one of us!
Here I thought I was missing out on Exotic PokemonGO gifts from far-flung corners of the globe when you stopped sending gifts to Pokefriends, but I guess they would have just been the same old Atlanta gyms and Pokestops I already get and send gifts from
make sure u wear ur masks so you don’t catch any con crud
I always wear a mask. Because I’m ugly!
“Let’s just say that you’ll fit in fine.”
“Cor and blimey!”
I mean tbf they’re telling everyone so it’s pretty stupid to have the RA stop 1 person from telling 1 other person.
Solve your own “drama”
Can’t help but notice that Jason has no actual response to Ruth’s “accusation,” here. Not even a “how dare you” or the equivalent, just annoyed silence.
Some Brits can take the bants.
Especially if we’ve been fortified with some jars at ‘Spoons then a cheeky Nando’s.
Jason doesn’t know what any of that means. It sounds like lower-class talk to him.
If Tyranny taught me anything, it’s that [Glare Silently] is a very effective response.
He’s just missing a pair of reading glasses to glare over the top of.
There’s only so much indignation he can summon up in a single day, and between Becky, Dina, and Carla, it’s pretty much all used up. That glare was all he can manage right now, the poor man.
That last panel took me way back to suicide pact. Ruth look younger with that Schadenfreude
I would be so delighted if it turns out Jason really is an American doing a bit
Plot Twist: Jason was born in Britain…because his parents were vacationing there.
And then he just rolled with it ever since!
Then he should get in a band to at least get a bit out of it
Oh man, you just triggered a childhood memory. I think I had a kid’s book where something like this was the twist exactly.
The idea that in Dumbing of Age England is the equivalent of the JFO dimension in It’s Walky! is deeply amusing to me.
Does Jason live with Ruth now?
Serious question.
I wouldn’t be surprised if their relationship jolted to that and they’re ignoring even more rules.
In a few hundred years, once we’ve met the (green) Martians and the (orange) Venusians, that fourth panel is going to seem so damn racist.
Venerians even.
Venisoids
English is a wonderful language.
I mean, were we to make contact with intelligent Martian life, I’m pretty sure they’d take a lot more offense at It’s Walky! than at anything else Willis has written.
Aww, Ruth kept the second desk Jennifer… ‘acquired’ for her.
Never mind. I misremembered. Ruth just requisitioned a spare desk.
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2017/comic/book-8/02-this-is-the-way-that-we-love/desk/
I genuinely love that Jason and Ruth are already at the comfort level of communicating ‘I register that you are fucking with me, allow me to register my annoyance, and now we move on’ via brief glares. It’s heartwarming.
All of it, Jason. All of it.
It’s a one person room but it still managed to have two desks, nice
You know how when you talk about video game characters and say “The red one and the green one” most people would automatically say its the Mario Bros?
Now i am wondering if Becky and Dina are the Mario Bros( or sisters) of this dorm. Random Person to a student passing by : “Hey do you know the orange and the green one?” – ” Well of course thats Becky and Dina”
And so the race is on.
Im surprised Ruth’s room has 2 desks. Tho I guess if you’re an RA you can arrange it

And by “dunkin”, it means “dunkin” on people.
Oh no, Ruth made fun of Jason’s absurdly affected Englishness! This is a Terrible Thing that only the Really Bad People do!
Making fun of British people is the ultimate form of punching down.
As a Brit (well, ex-Brit) let me tell you that I resemble that remark!
The world runs on petty misanthropy.
Ruth is adorable when she’s scheming. (Most other times too, but especially when she’s scheming.)
dang ruth chill out
there’s no need to run up to someone and scream about becky’s sexual history because you feel like it
only a total jerk would do that
People DO say that turnabout is fair play…
If Ruth can’t be a total jerk, what can she be?
Hot as hell?
It sure makes me wonder if Ruth and Carla aren’t twins separated at birth…
It’s bad when Carla does it, and it’s bad when Ruth does it. “Petty misanthropy” is a great term for it.
“Exactly how much petty misanthropy does this place run on?” – All of it.
Consitency demands i be against Ruth in this instance.
with the current revelation that her friends are not acknowledging her growth, Joyce might not be too happy to know that everyone is keeping the fact that Dina and Becky had sex from her.
Becky wasn’t even smart about it. What’s the point of asking people to keep it a secret when she yells about it to everyone she sees.
Classic self-sabotage. People do it all the time, because for whatever reason, on some level they *want* it all out in the open.
Ruth’s Canadian. She gets to mock both Brits and Frenchies. While having the Queen on the money and adding U to humor.
I’m so glad Ruth is on the case.
Pfft, it’s Indiana. I’ll bet their Dunkin’ count is something pathetic, like one per 10,000.
[Laughs in Masshole]
You don’t have fahkin’ Dunks unless theah’s one on every coanah!
Jason’s thick eyebrow look: great for glaring with!
There’s someone here who very much agrees with you…. I won’t say who.
why have i been laughing at “carla said i was a fake englishman” for five minutes and why is jason saying carla’s name the funny part
Becky and Dina didn’t think this one all the way through.
that look in the third panel.
priceless
I hope Carla spills the beans to Not-Joyce, and Dorothy has to do a Joyce impression, acting like she’s shocked so that Carla is satisfied with her cartoonish mischief. Shenanigans!
Carla: “Orange and green fucked!”
Dorothy: “Oh! Good for them.”
Carla: “Where’s the kaboom?! I was promised an Earth-shattering kaboom!”
Carla carefully avoids telling Dorothy and tells Joyce instead.
The entire commentariat melts down trying to figure out what she actually meant to do.
I’m okay with “the orange one” and “the green one”. Gonna use that.
