Any comments section I’ve seen with upvotes inevitably results in comments getting passive-aggressively down voted to hell without anyone explaining why. It kills discussions.
There are like five different really good book titles in this exchange. Sometimes I think the dialogue has less to do with expressing emotions or plot and is just Willis planting future book titles.
It’s just… the perfect form of awkwardness, where they’re both completely out of their depth trying to act like Functionalish Humans but it meshes together nicely instead of a trainwreck.
These two might actually work out as a couple. Somehow the awkwardness of both of them combined seems to be making them like each other more instead of causing this date to crash and burn.
You mean sharing about interests and studies? Psssh, that’s so old hat. Nowadays it’s all about trying to gauge how much of a mess each of you are, and if your mess likes/can handle THEIR mess
Well their neurosis kind of cancelled out the small talk anyway. Pretty sure Ruth was trying to just give up on this interaction in the first place, but Daisy’s so desperate to even have a romantic interaction with a girl at all she’s clinging to it like a life raft…and it’s kind of working I guess.
Yeah, but maybe I should’ve clarified I was talking about sapphic writers :’) Hence the personal experience. Roz doesn’t apply either but I have no clue of how many times I can roll this thing.
Walky resonates with the “oh god I coasted through school and then college kicked my ass because UNTREATED ADHD” facet.
Completely unrelated note, why do people refer to the waffle mark (#) as a ‘hash’? Hash and waffles are completely unrelated… although corned beef hash cooked on a waffle iron is amazing… mmm, waffle hash…
@Deanatay That character has a number of names. Largely unused but most erotically unambiguous is “octothorpe” aparently by Bell labs, for it’s appearance of being a grid of agricultural fields viewed from above surrounding a village or thorpe. Also known as pound, number, hash, and sometimes waffle (although waffle is ambiguous with the 9 dot grid button google uses for “other apps”), and a close cousing of sharp in music. A quick uncited search reveals that it grew out of writing lb (el-bee) for ‘pound’. A completely hypothesized guess at hash, is that it looks like a hatch mark in draughting. Programmers being programmers, we look for ways to describe things concisely, so a quick easy word for an important character may have simply got faster. (hatch-> hash). It’s worth noting that in unix shell scripting this may be said faster still as the “sha” in “sha-bang” for the openning “#!” used to specify the interpreter at the start if a script. (yes “exclamation point is too verbose. So it’s “bang”) So now we’re back to bangin’.
….so, are you saying that "octothorpe" is the most or the least sexy? which, by the way, is a great metric to apply to typographical nomenclature and i support it 100%.
Honestly, I can get behind Ruth and Daisy? From what I’ve seen (and please correct me because I might have missed past development), Jennifer and Ruth weren’t really working as a couple. They loved each other, yes, but ultimately their relationship had a lot of toxic elements (especially when Jennifer felt threatened by Ruth’s recovery/like she was being left behind). It might be nice for Ruth to get into a relationship that doesn’t start with a thinly-veiled suicide pact. (And then apply her newfound knowledge and skills if/when she and Jennifer reconcile)
But honestly I’m digging this ship so far based on how these two are vibing, and also because goddammit I just want Daisy to be happy. Lucy finally had her dreams come true, so now I need a new underdog puppy to root for.
To a point, I think. ;P There’s a certain threshold where if a girl (or guy) is just sweating buckets that it starts triggering the “Dude, are you okay?” medical response.
I…….was originally sort of against this just because of how nonfunctional Daisy always seemed to be. Now it simply seems like a quirk that could be fun foil.
Another possible benefit is the fact that Ruth might also rub off onto Daisy a bit too. Daisy doesn’t abuse her authority quite efficiently enough. She has lessons to learn in that regard. Jennifer might regret her decision to put this couple together.
Daisy, if she smells something weird, it probably is you, regardless of whether it’s your sweat. There’s only so much weird to be smelled, after all, and just how much of that weird do you actually expect is concentrated in a college town?
Swoon. Verb. Vid. To freeze frame. Med. a cataleptic attack caused by over stimulation, usu. accompanied by a low moan. Rob. Paralysis caused by unintentional buffer overflow. Alt.Rob. Paralysis caused by a human requesting division by zero. DOA. When char. Ruth jumps the gun and offers sex to char. Daisy in exchange for cuddles.
Ruth needs to socialize with more women that love women, are close to her age and aren’t from her dorm and think she is hot. An awkward mess is probably perfect… let yourself explore this! No matter this doesn’t end in romance, just explore this!
Ruth’s brain slowly processing that “wait, this girl thinks I am hot? Despite my various existence crimes? Wait, we could FUCK?? And I could process life without Jennifer for a minute??? Is this real??? Fuck it who cares press A press A!!!”
Not so much “meet cute” as “Meet train wreck with surrounding wildfires”. Provided they can erase any memory that Billie/Jennifer set this up, they could do fine!
“… Why are you on the floor?”
“You said dive ma’am.”
“I didn’t mean jump down to the floor, I meant ‘go down’ you useless lesbian, now DIVE DIVE DIVE and swab that deck with your toungue you mewling quim.”
I’ve long thought that the thing Ruth needs is someone who (a) refuses to feel obliged to hate her just because she hates herself and (b) won’t let her wallow.
Hate at first sight
Love at first fight.
Love at first sweat
Sweat at first fight
Sweat at first “fight”.
Flight before first sight.
Sweat at sight of fight
First trace of chemistry I’ve seen anyway. Maybe there is hope.
Fist rule of first date is don’t sweat at first date.
Daisy learned her romance techniques from the best.
Good one.
mee hee ^^ very cute
“Tell us you’re thirsty without saying you’re thirsty.”
Daisy: “I’ve sweat my entire bodyweight six times since I saw you sitting here.”
I like how that works for multiple understandings of the word “thirsty”
“turn the fact that you’re super sweaty because you’ve been running in and out of the place several times for silly reasons into a pickup line”
Daisy: “I’ve sweat my entire bodyweight six times since I saw you sitting here.”
Eh, I can dig it.
After all, it’s her birthday
“Look, you’re dumping lots of Roadblocks, but I’m still here aren’t I?”
Ruth dumped Roadblock? Man, I bet the staredown was epic.
how can you DUMP ME / your jersey is FRUMPY. >:(
Darn, I could’ve used “grumpy”. Oh well.
I’m not who you’re CHOOSING
And your team’s always LOSING
… I’ve never seen GI Joe.
I feel like Ethan could have participated to the comics contest solely with Roadblock rhyming poor decisions
you just dump me like a DUMP TRUCK
seriously b0ngo? you… UM, SUCK
(couldn’t just go for the obvious here)
Huh, against all odds Daisy seems to have managed to hoist the sails on this one. I’ll be honest, I’m impressed
The unmovable depressive force meets the unstoppably desperate object.
God I wish I could do upvotes on this site
Any comments section I’ve seen with upvotes inevitably results in comments getting passive-aggressively down voted to hell without anyone explaining why. It kills discussions.
Yeah I’ve witnessed that too. I actually prefer this format in that regard. It’s not really about best comment but more first come first serve.
Has this format led me to restructure how I spend all of my nights now? Yes, but it’s WORTH it, goddammit
No downvotes. Only upvotes.
I’m glad the comments section of Wilde Life isn’t like that.
Ah but see there’s a trick to that. The trick is the Hacker News model, which only has upvotes and no downvotes.
*upvotes both these comments*
Downvotes this comment because it’s what Mike would have wanted.
Whatever Dumb Mess You Are, My Mess is Digging It
Next book title!
There are like five different really good book titles in this exchange. Sometimes I think the dialogue has less to do with expressing emotions or plot and is just Willis planting future book titles.
Finding a good book title is like cooking pasta. You just gotta throw possible ones at the wall to see which stick.
If you threw Daisy at a wall right now, she might stick.
She’d slide sideways. She’s lubricated. No, not like that. Well, maybe like that.
That’s good, but so are these two:
I’ve Sweat My Entire Bodyweight Six Times Since I Saw You Sitting Here
If You Smell Something Weird, That’s Not Me
But is the smell weird, or is it that thing making the smell that is weird?
or is the manner in which you are smelling something that is weird?
Well if it is me we’re now talking about, the weirdness is a given. I am not a unique snowflake in that regard.
just your regular run-o’-the-mill weirdo
I can’t stop laughing, I love these two.
It’s just… the perfect form of awkwardness, where they’re both completely out of their depth trying to act like Functionalish Humans but it meshes together nicely instead of a trainwreck.
Delightful.
They’re both trying so hard to be considerate to each other but they’re both so bad at it. Adorkable!
These two might actually work out as a couple. Somehow the awkwardness of both of them combined seems to be making them like each other more instead of causing this date to crash and burn.
All aboard the good ship Daisy/Ruth!
Today I learned about Taleggio cheese. Yes, Galasso’s has it.
*plays “Cold Sweat” on the jukebox*
[Careless Whisper plays on hacked speakers]
[instant copyright strike by Warner]
[Kiss From a Rose plays on hacked speakers]
The version done by seals, not Seal.
That is the 3rd funniest thing I’ve seen on the internet today, and I’ve been watching a lot of Ozzy Man and zeFrank.
Why is Mike issuing copyright strikes?
Why wouldn’t he, he’s a jerk
Maybe it was Dot?
I know Daisy’s desperate, but I mean, my mess is digging their collective mess. Fuck it, go for it, you two.
they are a good combo
God, these girls are so obnoxious. What happened to asking your date what their major is?
You mean sharing about interests and studies? Psssh, that’s so old hat. Nowadays it’s all about trying to gauge how much of a mess each of you are, and if your mess likes/can handle THEIR mess
Well their neurosis kind of cancelled out the small talk anyway. We’ve got an English major and a likely Journalism major. Compatibility is measured by complimentary neuroses.
(not said in seriousness about English and Journalism majors, put your torches and pitchforks down)
……… Oh god. This is why their interactions have been like this familiar from the start.
These are writers. You can bet hard cold cash the airing of neuroses isn’t only a measure of compatibility but how we flirt.
…. ohcomeon there’s got to be a better avatar than Walky for relaying this deeply embarrassing yet truthful information.
Walky is now a cartoonist.
… so it’s not flirting when non-sapphic writers do it?
(That reminds me, I still need to get my laptop updated to Walky. Was this the right hash?)
It was.
Completely unrelated note, why do people refer to the waffle mark (#) as a ‘hash’? Hash and waffles are completely unrelated… although corned beef hash cooked on a waffle iron is amazing… mmm, waffle hash…
Sorry, what were we talking about?
@Deanatay That character has a number of names. nerddddddd (<3)
….so, are you saying that "octothorpe" is the most or the least sexy? which, by the way, is a great metric to apply to typographical nomenclature and i support it 100%.
The interrobang is sexier – it’s got “bang” right there in its name!
They’re both so messed up. Again.
But at least this pairing is less likely to involve binge drinking. So… improvement?
Honestly, I can get behind Ruth and Daisy? From what I’ve seen (and please correct me because I might have missed past development), Jennifer and Ruth weren’t really working as a couple. Sweaty girls are hot tho
Of course they’re hot. That’s why they’re sweating.
Science!
Neat pun, @Lokitsu !
By the way, @Yotomoe , you have any more fine art you want to exhibit?
haha nope. Sorry I’m taking a break to work on my ooooooooooooown stuff.
good for you, you rockstar!!! i hope you let us know when you go public with anything??
To a point, I think. ;P There’s a certain threshold where if a girl (or guy) is just sweating buckets that it starts triggering the “Dude, are you okay?” medical response.
And in others it starts triggering fetish responses. The brain/body is neat!
“Do you like me?” when they haven’t even talked about anything but clothes is… A move, certainly.
I’m seeing a whole forest of red flags here, but I still kind of hope they work?
Yeah, Panel 5 Daisy has me thinking that this isn’t going to work. Like, there might be a good reason she’s still single.
Daisy is certainly hoping Ruth rubs off on her.
*rimshot*
Your two avatars pair so perfectly with what was said. I love it
I wouldn’t have guessed that rimming is the rubbing they’d have gone for, but whatever floats their boats.
Daisy, if she smells something weird, it probably is you, regardless of whether it’s your sweat. There’s only so much weird to be smelled, after all, and just how much of that weird do you actually expect is concentrated in a college town?
Have you ever been to a college town? They are epicenters of weird!
If something smells it’s usually the Butz
A perfect comment, if only I could upvote
Disagree. If a thing smells, (smell-s) it’s a nose. Other things give off (or emit) smells, they are smell-y.
This is my hill, today I die. With last words not even my own, either that wall-paper goes, or I do.
Hitler disagrees.
Really I expected more from you milu, than goodwin’ing this argument. And frankly I am happy to have Hitler disagree with me. 😉
ooooh that’s a take
I would say it was more like they Pythoned
it.
This one time (not in band camp) I had a nightmare and when I woke up I had the fear sweats so bad I had to take a shower and change my sheets.
I do the same thing at least once a week. Constant nightmares aren’t a sign of anything, right?
No. Not at all. You’re fine. You’re fine.
think the concussion fairy will be paying Daisy a visit.
Bad at math, help!
Calculate what are the odds that Daisy swoooons! when she sees Ruth’s femur collection? Any help appreciated.
Undefined, due to insufficient prior sample size to employ the statistical formulae.
“Swoon” seems to have changed its meaning. I’ve always known it to mean faint; pass out. Now it means something different. I’m not clear on what.
Swoon. Verb.
Become faint due to arousal. Very George Takei, “oh my!”.gif
Bad at math! how many bodyweights does one body weigh???
I say one, but my bathroom scale says two. It’s obviously broken.
No, alt text, it isn’t me; it must be you.
“My dumb mess is liking your dumb mess” is the language of love.
(inset ProZD’s “Oh, they FUCKIN'” skit here)
Kinda feel like this isn’t the right context for that skit.
Not yet, but if maybe soon if they manage to keep this date going despite their awkwardness.
Ruth needs to socialize with more women that love women, are close to her age and aren’t from her dorm and think she is hot. An awkward mess is probably perfect… let yourself explore this! No matter this doesn’t end in romance, just explore this!
I goddamn love Daisy.
She’s a fun character and I certainly won’t complain if she gets to recur a little more
She’s quickly rising to the top of my ‘favorite characters’ list.
There’s…
Some chemistry here?
Yeah. Possibly combustionable or straight up poisonous.
smells of gasoline, tastes of CHEMISTRY
Ruth’s brain slowly processing that “wait, this girl thinks I am hot? Despite my various existence crimes? Wait, we could FUCK?? And I could process life without Jennifer for a minute??? Is this real??? Fuck it who cares press A press A!!!”
Ruth needs someone who can convince her she’s worthy of having good things, maybe Daisy’s up to the task.
Not so much “meet cute” as “Meet train wreck with surrounding wildfires”. Provided they can erase any memory that Billie/Jennifer set this up, they could do fine!
I’m glad to see that this ship is surprisingly not sinking despite several badly-patched up holes.
Daisy really knows how to speak to Ruth. Interesting… very interesting!
Ruth: *puts up a grouchy impenetrable front until Daisy raises her voice, whereupon she immediately changes her tune and starts being receptive*
It appears Daisy has found a job manning the sub.
I think you mean domming the sub.
“… Why are you on the floor?”
“You said dive ma’am.”
“I didn’t mean jump down to the floor, I meant ‘go down’ you useless lesbian, now DIVE DIVE DIVE and swab that deck with your toungue you mewling quim.”
“Don’t let her see you smile too much, make her work for it. Don’t hurt her.
…Well, hurt her a little. She likes that.”
“It’s her birthday”
I’ve long thought that the thing Ruth needs is someone who (a) refuses to feel obliged to hate her just because she hates herself and (b) won’t let her wallow.
Introducing the healthiest relationship in all of DoA
ABOUT TIME!
“Stop hating yourself, damn you!”
( angry shouting intensifies )
“Throw it into the fire! Destroy it.”
“No” -turns away and wears self loathing as a trophy for others to see my victory over my happiness.
… go leafs?
please, this is a public establishment
Hey, when your, “messed up”, gets along with their, “messed up”, that is a good relationship, in my book.
I would have thought that the hate-sex would have been after the second date, but things are coming along nicely.
Huh, these two might be a better fit for each other than I thought.
Missed your chance to pull a Villanelle, Daisy.
SMELL ME RUTH
This will probably end on a seven state killing spree.
Psycho Killers in Love.
psycho killer
sets the date
la-la-la-la la-la-la-lesbians
(i know ruth’s bi but it fit the song ok)
Ruth in that second-to-last panel tho
There will be a lot of shouting later on… Not ALL of it angry.
I’m rooting for these two.
Why does her jersey have an inverted Leviathan cross on it? Is…. [ hastily checks archive ]…. “Dave Keon” interested in the occult?
