I mean, when I first saw my brother in glasses, it was like this, the “oh, that’s new but also not surprising since LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE in the family has them”
Given we now live in an age where people are spending an unprecedented number of our daily hours staring at screens held 30cm from our faces, beginning in many cases before our ages reach double digits… I would not be at ALL surprised if nearsightedness has already become the statistical “normal”.
Those handful of people NOT wearing glasses? They’re the freaks now! MWahahaha!
They realized in I think it was… I want to say Singapore? a few years ago that kids were needing glasses for being nearsighted at a rate that was increasing much faster than could be explained by genetics. So they looked into it, and realized that Australian kids (more or less in the same part of the world, climatically, I guess) weren’t having the same issue, and, in fact, didn’t need glasses that much at all.
So they looked into what might be causing that difference in outcomes, when the kids were living very similar lifestyles (so far as family incomes, and screen times, etc, etc went), and realized pretty soon that the difference was exposure to levels of sunlight.
So that of course made them think that Vitamin D levels might be to blame; but surprisingly, it wasn’t.
Ends up that, what with our eyes still being adapted for an outdoor, hunter/gatherer lifestyle, what our eyeballs need, in our childhoods particularly, is just to be looking around outside, at things in the distance, in sunlight.
It’s the exposure to the sunlight itself that makes the difference, and looking at stuff at the horizon, and not just in one’s immediate environs/within arm’s reach. And it also ends up that you only like fifteen minutes a day of looking around, outside, in daylight (with the sun on your face, not just out a window) to get the full benefits of it.
So they started having young schoolkids spending time outside each day (like we did with recess when I was a kid), and pretty soon they were able to see the impact on the percentage of kids requiring glasses, as I recall.
TL;DR: It’s not looking at screens all day that causes nearsightedness (although that can cause eyestrain); it’s not using our eyeballs the way they were evolved to, and just being outside during daylight hours, looking around at stuff further away, for like 15 minutes a day, is enough for kids to see a real change in their correct eyeball growth. Pun intended. Heh.
–I expect genetics still plays a part, though. But screens, not so much, it happily ends up.
Meanwhile, I didn’t even own a screen until I was well into my teens, spent every day outside just about until I was 13, and have been blind as a bat since I was 7. Eyesight finally stopped changing at 17, finally got a laptop at 20, no change in nearsightedness.
Yeah, I was an outside kid and didn’t have even a TV in the house (weird, cult upbringing) and I was in need of glasses by the time I was 10. I needed them before, but it wasn’t really recognized what my problem was.
If you could find the paper/study that has the sunlight effects on eyesight, I would love to read it. I wouldn’t be surprised to SEE* that there is an effect, but I’m definitely not one of the examples of that effect.
*see** what I did there?
**see*** what I did there?
***se– eh, I’ll stop now.
When I first saw my brother in glasses, I immediately began giving him shit (little brother, gotta follow union rules)… until four months later when it was decreed I needed them as well…
Just my 2 cents here, take it with a grain of salt. Malaya is kind of a garbage person, but she makes no attempt at covering it. In fact she will say directly to your face that she’s not gonna be nice, and fuck off if you don’t like it. There’s a level of honesty to that. Much like Joe being a womanizing douche, he’s never tried to act like he isn’t, so there’s people who accept who he is. Mary is hot garbage and treats everyone else horribly but acts like she isn’t and doesn’t. She acts like she’s a perfect creature and everyone should love and respect her for being so great at what she’s doing, while putting everyone else down for doing anything different, and people the same as her also get scolded for not being good enough. That’s why she’s hated compared to tolerated.
I understand what you’re saying about Malaya, but I think I’ve had enough of “I’m terrible and want credit for being unashamed of my terribleness” for a lifetime at this point.
Yeah, very much in agreement with that. I really don’t get why people they should think- oh, you’re a member of kitten-kicking action group, and you publicly lobby for kicking kittens, and whenever anyone says, hey, maybe don’t kick kittens, it hurts them, you say “Oh, I know it hurts the kittens, but I think it’s more important that I get to kick the kittens than that the kittens don’t get hurt.”? Oh, well, I guess that’s fine then.
thats i am pretty suspicious of Booster right now.
if the meeting is anything to go by, we could be looking at another such character. thought its still to early to say for sure.
It being case-sensitive, and that being enough, is definitely the case for me. I can’t ever recall what capitalization I use* [no caps, capitalization at start, or capitalization per word], so I generally cycle through three consistent different avatars (Well, consistent up until the system gets tweaked and the avatar associations get shuffled around. Sometimes that’s a win, other times it’s.. not. :P)
*More precisely, I can’t reliably recall which capitalization I need to use to get (whatever avatar association is currently best and not awful). 😛
It assigns a grav based on your email address. Keep using the same email address and you keep getting the same grav. Change the email address, the pic changes too. (Probably. Sometimes you’ll get the same one again by luck.) But the grab-assigner is case-sensitive, and email addresses aren’t. So you can change which letters of your email address are capitalized and get a new grav.
SAME! I was Carla, now I’m Sarah. I think we added in a Joyce with glasses somewhere, and it changed. I’m actually more happy with my results now, because I love Sarah the most (even if she’s a little mean, she’s not Malaya mean or Ruth mean).

I was thinking, isn’t it kinda spoiler-ish to update the cast based on the latest developments in the comic? A new reader starting from the beginning is going to be pretty confused if they check the cast page before they start reading.
Arguably it’s spoilerish to HAVE a cast page. Unless your cast page only has the characters that appeared in the first comic, described as they are in the first comic, it will spoil future character introductions, personalities, histories, and/or relationships.
Given that, the cast list isn’t for first-time readers. If anything, it’s for people who randomly wander into the page and, being insane, elect to just start with what’s in front of them rather than devoting a month and a half to reading several years of backstory.
Look…undoubtedly Joyce has her strong points. But the level of upkeep and hand-holding required to be her friend would be waaayyyy too much for me, I’d be exhausted after three days.
Only Joyce’s image was updated and nothing else, but I should’ve seen it coming with You’d think she’d be completely out of her depth, but you’d only be half right.
You can see a little bit of the top rim in the ‘cast’ picture. Like thejeff says, most of the time it’s going to be hidden by her bangs.
In addition, Willis has already demonstrated that he will omit bits of the frame (see pic #1 today, which shows the full bottom of the frames, vs, pic #2, #3, and #4 where he left off part of the circle) to permit Joyce’s eyes to display expression, emotion, and anything else as required.
Most any modern facility can do that, especially if the lenses are single-correction plastic and they don’t have to do anything extra to them like scratch protection, tinting, or UV coating.
Mine are usually a bit of a struggle, but mine are also a high enough prescription that we have to check to make sure they’ll fit in any given frame before buying.
Same here. Tried to get a second pair with the fancy anti blue light thing… they were friggin’ coke bottles bottom and BROKE the frame while in their case! I’ve barely wore them ><
I actually did luck out once two years ago at a Lenscrafters that happened to have lenses in my prescription in stock. (SUPER lucked out, too, because we had to drive over an hour out to said Lenscrafters because we were at the beach and I mangled the frame when I’d had them off to read. Did do a decent job breaking me of that habit of hanging my glasses on my shirt collar while they weren’t in use, at least.)
Quite a number of places can do them same-day these days. The local glasses places I used to go to for new prescriptions would usually get them done in about an hour, and that was a few years ago.
Just a quick note on this. My Mom did a job interview and it included an eye test. She took it and the reviewer asked her if she forgot to bring her glasses with her since she failed badly. She said yes, so he asked her to return the next afternoon and retake cause they really wanted to hire her. She went to the local glasses place, told them her problem and they got her a pair ready in time for her to pass the exam. This was 1966 or so, so it could be done then if needed. I went to the same store for mine and it always took two or three weeks otherwise.
to be fair to Willis …
a significant amount of the cast are nor or once were self insert characters.
Danny originally was in roomies. ( and Joe as a wish fulfillment. He Builds Conscious robots! )
Then Walky , then in I”ts walky” we have David/ The Cheese who is literally Willis
Then Ethan in Shortpacked. and David literally again as Ethans wiki antagonist.
I do not know if ‘Joyce and Walky’ are biographical inserts for Willis marriage, but they did have twins.
Finally He has a very explicit note saying Joyce will be used as a vessel for personal biography . Its totally absolutely written on the tin. https://www.dumbingofage.com/about/
Even still I dont know if joyce is actually a self insert ( beyond background compressed coming if age and anxieties/ ocd. ) ; She isnt a thinly disguised caricature. Shes a pre existing character openly and explicitly used to tell a biographical story
Malaya is an artist; Ethan, amber and Joe are obsessed with transformers. Dorothy has his work ethic and atheism, and politics and conscience.
~ more than anyone i think when when Dorothy talks its often in Willis voice ; just my opinion. The narrative of the comic Bends toward Dorothy. For a comic called “dumbing of age” she has the least screw ups.
So that’s at least 9 characters. Walky is going to write a comic can we count him 2x? . i think if we looked closer we would probably find a little Willis in almost every character.
I think you needs “the soggies” next to the right. then a Milk gun, then Giant Interdimensional The Cheese breaking out in a giant pot of Kraft and Cheese
Exactly the word I was going to use. More specifically, my comment was going to be, “OMG SHE’S ADORABLE!”
But technically, you beat me to it.
What the heck, I’ll say it anyway.
OMG SHE’S ADORABLE!
*not* I meant to say I’m not gonna complain but now that I think on it I WILL complain…about how strong the family resemblance is in the Brown family! Joyce almost looks exactly like Jocelyn. They’re not even twins! Crazy!
Aww, she looks super cute with a happy face in the glasses. (Mind, she also looks cute with an internally freaking out face in them, but happiness is easier to enjoy.)
Not bad but im pretty ignorant on female fashion (not that much better on male fashion in all honesty) so will the colours of the frames clash with her clothing?
I mean, I guess it depends, but half the time people don’t actually pay that much attention to your glasses beyond ‘oh hey that person wears glasses.’ My normal pair and spares at the moment are different, bright colors and I didn’t get much commentary either way before the pandemic. (Dark pink and a sort of lavendarish blue, respectively. One set’s also noticeably rounder than the other.)
Especially if you wear brighter colors to begin with, you can get away with fairly dramatic glasses color. (Also a fair number of the plastic frames are at least translucent, and metal frames tend to be relatively thin. Both of those can make them a bit less noticeable.)
Even if people don’t explicitly notice the glasses the wardrobe can still clash. If the glasses are perceived as part of your face, the clash might be seen as “that shirt doesn’t look good on you”, rather than “those frames clash with that shirt”.
Bright colors can definitely work with any outfit if they go with your complexion! I have a friend who has bright orange frames but she has a warm complexion/brown hair/freckles so it doesn’t matter what she wears, the glasses seem to work.
I have pink frames and am super pale and cool-toned and same deal. Joyce’s probably will work with anything that already looked good on her because they reflect her eye color. Basically if you compliment your complexion or eye color you’re not really adding any new elements to your overall color scheme so no new wardrobe clashing challenges.
I have teal frames like Joyce (not so big but more brilliant and equally awesome), and coincidentally, all the colors I ever wear work with teal. So it all works if you stay still within your palette INMExperience.
I’m an artist so my sense of fashion is less “good fashion” and more “sparkle rainbow cat shirts from the Target kid’s section? Sign me up!” but I think blue was a good choice to not clash considering it reflects her eye color.
I have blue eyes (and am pale and blonde) and considered blue for mine (opted for pink, since that also works well a a “neutral” tone with pale complexions IMO).
I’m one of those people who struggles with the puff of air, and watching people put in contact lenses gives me the same reaction as Cronenberg body horror. Eye stuff just really freaks some people out.
I like the color, too, and the way it matches her hat, scarf, and mittens! Hopefully it works with other outfits, but they go with her big blue eyes well enough that I don’t foresee issues.
I like how we got the Dorothy glasses, the Becky glasses, and then the final glasses as a sort of combo that’s more Joyce. The size and shape are in between the two and fit Joyce’s eyes better. Like Becky’s, they have color, but the color is more subdued and works better with Joyce’s eyes, and like Dorothy’s, they don’t have flair on the sides. They’re thick enough that the color shows but not as thick as Becky’s that looked drawn-on, and they’re thin enough to disappear when artistically convenient to be an extension of her eyes.
Well, this means we can expect a new Joyce w/glasses magnet in the Kickstarter for book 10.
Just for giggles, though, Willis, have them pushed up on her head while she squints to try to see something without them.
Yeah I always have to wait at least a week! 🙁
I get mine direct from the optometrist though because every attempt to get them elsewhere has been disaster (dunno if it’d my astigmatism or what).
Hmm, not particularly feeling my current grav with today’s new change (I wear glasses myself, but the rounded lenses are throwing me off), so it’s a proper roulette time for me for the first time in years! 😛
Hey BBCC by the way, your capitalization from January 9 (formerly showing Joe) now has Sal. I hear you’ve been looking for her, so I checked with today’s update. 🙂
Post-script (with one more roll) to add that I’m not 100% that the grav was formerly Joe, but one of the capitalizations you rolled with on January 9 does indeed now show Sal.
Eh, it’s not the first time I’ve run around happy screaming about Sal. At this point, if they haven’t bought noise cancelling headphones, I dunno what to tell them.
I was leaving comments about Jan 9 and didn’t understand why they were being moderated. Finally figured it out. I used the automatic choice thing to set my email address to restart the choice, and when I did, it reset name to my full name. Oh well, it’s not like I was particularly anonymous anyway. Dang smart machines without which I’d be lost.
As a member of an audience, some of whom have been reading comics featuring Joyce for over 20 years (more like 15 for me), this may be an even bigger adjustment for us than it is for her. Like, Joyce with glasses is kinda weirding me out (and I say that as someone who’s worn glasses all my life).
This arc has me even more excited to get new glasses and I *still don’t have the info I need to provide to an optometrist to use my new vision plan!* Aaaaaaaaaahh!!!
Y’know, given how Joyce’s eyes are usually stylized and how people-wearing-glasses’s eyes are usually stylized, this isn’t as big a change as one might expect. The cast page, in particular, looks a little bit like the border of her eyes just turned into rims. I don’t say this as a negative! I just think it’s kind of a funny side effect of how big-eyed she’s always been.
I like them! I expected a small timeskip—just a few days, nothing huge—to allow for time to make the lenses, but this flows better narratively. Leaves me jealous of Joyce and the commenters for whom same-day glasses are feasible, though, you lucky ducks.
The cycle of emotions I just went through upon discovering that I’m Blowjob Cat now was…really something. I think I’ve landed on “pleased,” but it was a wild ride.
It’s only from this comment thread that I’ve become aware some people don’t actually live in a place where same day lenses can be expected. Typical wait for me whenever I got glasses was 1-2 hours.
Seriously, Joyce, Sarah already passed the acid test: She recognised you at first glance! Let’s just see if anyone’s response to you changes, positive or negative, before you have a meltdown over this?
I do think Joyce’s problem with having glasses is more for herself having to change in a way she has no control over, rather than how others perceive her. Probably more torturous that people will feel compelled to point them out and compliment them, as she won’t be allowed to forget they exist, at least until the novelty wears off.
Maybe it’s because I get auto-darkening, scratchproof-coated lenses, or maybe it’s my touch of astigmatism mixed in with the nearsightedness, but I always have to wait a few days for new lenses.
Truly all I can really think is how absolutely jealous I am of Joyce to be able to get her glasses the same day. I love being blind for weeks while I wait for my new fussy lenses to be made.
I do wonder now what would be the best response from Sarah?
Maybe: “Who are you? Why are you in my room. Get out! I am waiting for my lovable little sis Joyce”
Glasses when you have gigantic eyes is such a pain. Any round ones just make them look even bigger, but smaller ones don’t fully cover them. At least thick frames kind of counter the effect a little.
I think it’s because her eyes are so big they fill her new frames, and we’re not used to seeing her in glasses yet so at a glance it looks like her eyes are outlined in blue. For comparison, Ruth’s frames are square and her non-depression eyes don’t fill the entire lens anyway. Lucy’s frames are shorter than her eyes, which makes them look like upside-down, blobby Ts. I think everyone else who normally wears glasses has dot eyes.
We’ll just have to get used to it, just like Joyce.
I just noticed the bespoke header images updated so now Joyce has glasses up there too. In the close-up one of her and Becky, there’s a black outline hinting where the edge of her eye is in the white lens/sclera area. That helps!
Had she gone with pink I would’ve truly become Joyce’s twin (poofy short blonde hair, GIANT blue eyes, anxiety, socially awkward, experienced dramatic shifts in worldview in college, has persnickety food issues, hates change, possibly repressed bi, and now glasses).
I’m not going to mention that glasses, I’ve worn a pair since 4th grade, it’s no big deal, really. In a month, she’ll be over it.
No. Here is my bit. Some artists give us no background. They know who they are. I’m not an artist, not at all, and can’t imagine how hard drawing these comics must be, coupled with the joke-of-the-day, etc. But come one, give us something in the background.
Some artists give us very simple backgrounds, like a doorway, or a painting or something. Not very good, but better.
Then there’s damn-you here. Not only a fully fledged, accurate to the real place the scene represents, but even more.
Seeing Monkey Master in Joyce’s personal space…. damn-you Willis, well done.
So I had to check the cast page to see the new look, and reading it, saw that Dorothy is listed as her best friend but not Becky and I have to cackle at Becky because I’m mean.
This is also a test to see what my other email looks like cause I’m curious.
Man, when I got my glasses, I was thrilled with how well I could suddenly see. Vision goes so slowly that you accept it as normal, and then suddenly everything is high-def.
I’m reading it as ‘there’s been enough change in her life in the last 4 months and she’s uncomfortable with it enough as it is and doesn’t need more change to rub in the fact that she’s changing.’
I have to admit I don’t think it is just that. See she was making a big deal about her family wearing them. I think it is also about her identity. She doesn’t trust her family anymore (Maybe dad, no clue about brothers/sister). She seems to have this hang up about it. Her eyesight had to have been getting bad for a while. She ignored it.
Pretty sure her issue is with change/losing her established identity in many ways, not with glasses. The glasses are a metaphor. Her appearance has become yet another thing that has suddenly changed in ways she had no control over.
I think she looks better with a smaller pair of glasses, like the first ones she tried, but these are still cute on her. Unlike the first pair, she looks a bit nerdier, but that’s not a bad thing.
think Robin’s “Im smart” glasses might work well for Joyce. then again those are close enough to “sexy librarian” that it’s probably just my bias showing.
Joyce seems to think that all change is a bad thing and getting use to new things is indoctrination. She was probably excepting Sarah to back up her anti-change. Her glasses match her hat and her scarf.
lemme just say that you’ve done a great job of drawing “joyce with glasses” to still look like joyce, the way the blue frames are sort of sprinkled into her visual signature without taking over
PROTIP: it’s ALWAYS wrong
I mean, when I first saw my brother in glasses, it was like this, the “oh, that’s new but also not surprising since LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE in the family has them”
Given we now live in an age where people are spending an unprecedented number of our daily hours staring at screens held 30cm from our faces, beginning in many cases before our ages reach double digits… I would not be at ALL surprised if nearsightedness has already become the statistical “normal”.

It’s misshapen eyeballs that cause near-sightedness. I don’t believe staring at a screen is going to cause that to happen.
Eyesight adapting to what you most use it for made perfect sense to me.
When I first saw my brother in glasses, I immediately began giving him shit (little brother, gotta follow union rules)… until four months later when it was decreed I needed them as well…
re-rolling…
Keep going, you still have glasses.
The cast page is already updated for anyone else who was curious like me
NOPE. I will NOT be the worst character in the series
Mary and most of the parents still exist so can’t really see Malaya getting that title.
Mary is garbage and narratively is treated like garbage. Malaya is garbage and is treated like neutral at worst. That bugs me more.
Just my 2 cents here, take it with a grain of salt. Malaya is kind of a garbage person, but she makes no attempt at covering it. In fact she will say directly to your face that she’s not gonna be nice, and fuck off if you don’t like it. There’s a level of honesty to that. if the meeting is anything to go by, we could be looking at another such character. thought its still to early to say for sure.
how did you change your Pic?
Change the capitalization in your email.
Seriously?
When you make a change, it rerolls your gravatar if you haven’t set one manually.
Let’s test, am I still Becky?
Seems like there’s more to it.
*More precisely, I can’t reliably recall which capitalization I need to use to get (whatever avatar association is currently best and not awful). 😛
Yeah, I changed one cap, and it didn’t change, but I changed it to all caps and suddenly better character than Walky and Becky.
Remember, there’s a limited number of avatars in the system, so it’s possible for one captialization to give you the same avatar as another.
I didnt know that workedp
Seriously.
It assigns a grav based on your email address. Keep using the same email address and you keep getting the same grav. Change the email address, the pic changes too. (Probably. Sometimes you’ll get the same one again by luck.) But the grab-assigner is case-sensitive, and email addresses aren’t. Wait, what? How am I Roz now? I had Walky, dammit!
Nope, apparently not.
SAME! I was Carla, now I’m Sarah. I think we added in a Joyce with glasses somewhere, and it changed. I’m actually more happy with my results now, because I love Sarah the most (even if she’s a little mean, she’s not Malaya mean or Ruth mean).
She’s mean but she cares, even if she doesn’t want to.
Oohhh. I want to see whom I’ll get this time, then.
Woh! I used to be Ruth!
Huh, am I still Dina?
Maybe I’m wrong here, but doesn’t that also put your comment in moderation? I got a new computer and totally forgot what email address I was using on this site before, and I got a regular gravitar when I put in the address I use the most, but my comments all had to be approved for a while
Here’s more information than you ever wanted, and also no guarantee that it’s relevant! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_table
My email doesn’t have any capitalization. And I don’t like this picture.
Then put some in. Capitalize a letter and see what happens.
Email itself ignores capitalization. The hashing algorithm that picks gravatars doesn’t.
I had BJ Cat for a week or so there but now I’ve got Julia Gray, I haven’t changed anything at all on my end.
I used to have Billie as my gravatar but now I’m Ruth. Not happy.
Oops, changed again.
I like professor Robin.
We are all professor Robin.
I had Billie. I was happy with Billie. I would like Ruth better. And I grant, Leslie is better than Galasso, who I was for a long damned time.
Now I’m Ruth.
I’ll miss Sarah, who I was only so briefly, but I can accept Ruth.
One try, just for the fun of it.
now i want to see if i’ve changed
I don’t want to be malaya!! Quick i must change again
Or you can follow the Get a Gravatar link below and make it whatever you want. You don’t have to leave things to chance.
But the roulette is fun!
Roulette is where we’re at
I mean, it could be worse. you could be blowjob cat
I used to be a blowjob cat like you, but then I took an arrow pointing towards an exit sign under advisment, and now I’m knee-deep in other pursuits.

The tags have been more spoiler-ish, honestly.
*glares at Jocelyn tag*
BBCC’s gonna slit my throat for this Gravatar, aren’t they?
Ooo who am I gonna be?
Yeah this kinda fits with who I was in freshman year of college
Look…undoubtedly Joyce has her strong points. But the level of upkeep and hand-holding required to be her friend would be waaayyyy too much for me, I’d be exhausted after three days.
Joyce is a great friend during crisis.
Everyday life with her is a crisis.
This isn’t quite as bad as the grape juice thing. But yeah, she’d be exhausting.
It’d be interesting to see someone basically well-disposed to Joyce, but who just can’t keep up with this stuff. (“Do we ever hit bottom on this?”)
Oh yes, while it is good for me to have friends that are a little more extroverted than I am, Joyce probably would be a little much for me.
Well, I think they look good on Joyce.
Okay, I like this gravatar!
I, like sarah, think the colour is nice.
Those look cute, if a little teal.
Also, Joyce? That is Sarah freaking out.
Oh c’mon, I liked Fuckface.
Oh, did the avatars just reroll to add Joyce-with-glasses to the mix?
Seems like. I miss my Asher-and-Billie pair of gravs (depending on whether I capitalized a letter or not) already. 😛
*Asher-and-Jennifer, I meant. Still getting used to the change.
I think they’re cute!
And Sarah is the best big sister.
Did you keep notes on your final gravitar of Jan. 9 which is now Sal?
I was not prepared for how nerdy Joyce looks in those glasses
Too high? Too low?
Large… fits her expressive face… ooo, no top rim… I LOVE IT
*plays Freak Out by CHIC for alt*
Only Joyce’s image was updated and nothing else, but I should’ve seen it coming with You’d think she’d be completely out of her depth, but you’d only be half right.
I wonder if they’re actually no top rim, or if that’s just how Willis draws them so her eyes can be more expressive
Looks to me like they’re not and the top’s just hidden by her hair. How far around they go seems to depend on the angle.
Damn, where’d she get her glasses that were able to craft her lenses and frames same day?
Yeah, no crap. But, if we had to wait comic time, she’d be without glasses for another five years.
Lenscrafters has a store in Bloomington. Depending on her prescription and choice of frames, they could have made them on-site that day.
Err, just about anywhere now? Here’s an example: https://www.owndays.com/au/en/
Plenty of places can do simple lenses in 30 minutes to an hour. A couple of examples with locations in Bloomington:
https://www.eyeglassworld.com/services/same-day-service
https://local.lenscrafters.com/in/bloomington/2852-e-3rd-st.html
I can’t remember the last time I had a set of glasses that *weren’t*. Local LensCrafters, in and out, no probs.
Who is this mysterious “i” in the tags?
Head Alien, presumably?
Yeah, I figured I was just forgetting it being called that or something.
Alternative: We have a new, invisible cast member.
‘I’ was clearly Willis. He feels called out this strip.
It’s gone now, tho.
Willis is just being really explicit now about Joyce being a self-insert.
Next storyline, Joyce realizes she’s nonbinary.
Actually, I think that’s why Booster got brought in.
to be fair to Willis …
a significant amount of the cast are nor or once were self insert characters.
Wait, Joyce is autobiographical? [Earth]-[Astronaut]-[Gun]-[Astronaut] Always has been.
Allow Me: 🌎👨🚀🔫👩🏽🚀
Sadly, I can’t do a nonbinary Astronaut yet. It’s in the code standard but isn’t supported in my browser, yet.
Much obliged.
“Wait, Joyce is autobiographical?”
🌎👨🚀🔫👩🏽🚀
“Always has been.”
I think you needs “the soggies” next to the right. then a Milk gun, then Giant Interdimensional The Cheese breaking out in a giant pot of Kraft and Cheese
Robot.
It was just a check to see if you were paying attention.
An ‘i’-test, if you will.
Adorable! I didn’t think willis could make Joyce more huggable but here we are!
Exactly the word I was going to use. More specifically, my comment was going to be, “OMG SHE’S ADORABLE!”
But technically, you beat me to it.
What the heck, I’ll say it anyway.
OMG SHE’S ADORABLE!
This feels kind of like a dead dove moment. What exactly was expected from Sarah here?
Wait what? My Sal became a glasses Joyce? I’m gonna complain that’s pretty top tier but I’m just wondering how.
Dammit, new gravitar? Do I h ave to begin my quest anew?
Yeah probably. I’m in a bit of a jam myself cause I’m not sure I got the luck to pull Sal in one roll again.
Nope. Didn’t have it. Back to Joyce with specks it is.
BBCC, look through your comments on Jan. 9, last gravitar.
I think the Joyce one got updated, which shuffled the deck again.
Becky level. Presumably.
Matching Joyce’s level exactly. She knew the requirements.
thank goodness she didn’t go with the red ones Becky suggested… those were awful
Reminds me of the time Mum was writing something and her spell checker changed acquainted to aqua-tinted.
*plays Tina Turner’s remake of “I Can See For Miles” on the hacked Muzak*
Oh, it’s better than I thought!
I would not have thought of that as a cover but it really works.
Dammit not Walky.
The Secret Master of the story, I can live with that.
Why do we even HAVE that level!?
damn, you beat me to it!
*shoos the gator off*
Haha, my thoughts Exactly! ^_^
*Joyce and Sarah plunge into pit of gators*
Those are much better than the red ones
Joyce looks like a dork right now, I think she chose the wrong glasses imo.
I think I’ll just reroll this one.
NOPE
Sorry Lucy, you’re just not my type.
Much better.
IDK you kinda look like a dork right now, I think you chose the wrong Gravatar :V
CUTE
Not bad but im pretty ignorant on female fashion (not that much better on male fashion in all honesty) so will the colours of the frames clash with her clothing?
Eh, not really. Given her normal outfits, something like teal would be better than black or rimless frames.
Plus, they match her eyes.
Speaking as someone who’s frames are neon orange, people really don’t notice what my frames look like after the first time. They’re just your face.
I have a tendency to dramatically shift colors when I switch frames, and you’d be amazed how long it takes some people to notice!
They match her hat, gloves, and scarf.
I’m an artist so my sense of fashion is less “good fashion” and more “sparkle rainbow cat shirts from the Target kid’s section? Sign me up!” but I think blue was a good choice to not clash considering it reflects her eye color.
I have blue eyes (and am pale and blonde) and considered blue for mine (opted for pink, since that also works well a a “neutral” tone with pale complexions IMO).
lenses already? or are these training wheels
did we reroll icons? i was becky a few days ago. this is lesbophobic to me personally /s
Seriously, same-day prescription glasses is rreeeaalllyy fast. Also, how come no one has discussed contact lenses? Or are her eyes too sensitive?
I suspect we saw no push for contacts because Willis wears glasses (or at least his gravatar does) and Joyce is semi auto-biographical.
And she freaked out about a puff of air. I was fine for that and it still took me years to work up to sticking in contacts.
I’m one of those people who struggles with the puff of air, and watching people put in contact lenses gives me the same reaction as Cronenberg body horror. Eye stuff just really freaks some people out.
Not to mention Joyce as she is written would probably freak out if she had to put something in her eye.
Why am I Roz now? I was Sarah the other day.
Hmm
It was discussed ad nauseum the other day. If Joyce couldn’t handle the puff test, she likely wouldn’t be able to handle contacts.
reroll…
reroll…
reroll…
reroll…
Careful you don’t do too many rerolls in one day, apparently the system doesn’t like that.
Starting with contacts before she even has glasses?
Maybe her insurance doesn’t cover contacts?

5/5 would put a magnet of this Joyce on my fridge
Agreed! I’m a fan of the color too.
nope, rerolling that gravatar.
Ugh
These glasses definitely seem fitting for Joyce. And of course, she looks cute wearing them.
Yeah, she looks pretty damn cute with those glasses. She made the right choice there.
I am very pleased with this gravitar. 5/5, would recommend to a friend.
Well, this means we can expect a new Joyce w/glasses magnet in the Kickstarter for book 10.
Just for giggles, though, Willis, have them pushed up on her head while she squints to try to see something without them.
in what world do you LEAVE with a pair of new glasses the same day you get eye tested? D<

Wtf no fair! Granted my glasses are super thick and complex but still! no fair!
It’s not that unusual these days.
Godamnit, Joyce!
Don’t fall for Becky’s bullshit!
Her parents are deeead!
Hey BBCC by the way, your capitalization from January 9 (formerly showing Joe) now has Sal. I hear you’ve been looking for her, so I checked with today’s update. 🙂
Oh god not Robinnnn
I can live with Walky for a day.
Post-script (with one more roll) to add that I’m not 100% that the grav was formerly Joe, but one of the capitalizations you rolled with on January 9 does indeed now show Sal.
Two different capitalizations both showing Walky, huh. Well at least it’s not Robin.
Oooh, smart idea to check!
😀
Okay, testing, but also, the change made those comments reeeeeeally ironic and funny, so 10/10 universe
*running around happy screaming*
Happy for you, but now I’m just hoping the whole neighborhood doesn’t hate you or think you’re being murdered at some Godforsaken hour.. 😛
Eh, it’s not the first time I’ve run around happy screaming about Sal. At this point, if they haven’t bought noise cancelling headphones, I dunno what to tell them.
Congratulations BBCC, I knew you’d get her eventually.
Thank you!
All it took was Joyce wearing glasses?
Congratulations, I’m happy for you (this would have been ironic as Malaya was my last Gravatar, so let’s see what fate has for me now)
Love Malaya! Love Becky too <3 You are blessed with good gravitars.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!! Congrats!
Thank you! 😀
Aha I had a feeling bespectacled Joyce was gonna be a Gravatar soon.
Oh thank god, no more Prof. Robin.
Sorry, not digging Becky’s current growing-out style….
Ah geez, not the lightning rod….
Strike two…
Nah, can’t abide smoking.
Eh…
Is it hypocritical if I keep Robin?
Is Robin smoking?
Probably a bubble pipe.
Headcanon says it’s a real pipe but she put bubble soap in it.
So, how long until the Joyce gravitars all update?
Okay, time for me to find the right grav.
Errrrf. Okay, the system doesn’t like me trying too many in one night, so I’ll stick with Dorothy for now.
… I mean, I had Walky! I was happy with Walky! And then… then….
DAMN YOU WILLIS!
Damnations be unto Willis indeed. I really liked my Asher-and-Jennifer combo. 😛
Welp. Looks like I’m changing my grav for the first time in months.
I like those frames.
Oh cute.
At least Sarah noticed.
Ooh yeah. I hadn’t thought of that. Someone is going to say: “Joyce, but haven’t you always been wearing glasses?”
I agree. It’s a very nice color.
This arc has me even more excited to get new glasses and I *still don’t have the info I need to provide to an optometrist to use my new vision plan!* Aaaaaaaaaahh!!!
Oh, this is a good gravatar.
Imagine if he’d started drawing her with some of those weird… whatchamacallit, nostril things.
You sure you didn’t just make up that word? I’ve never heard of a body part with such a name.
Yep, really should’ve stuck with Dorothy asked for.
…but blue frames aren’t so bad.
Yeah, I liked those better. The familial resemblance they brought out must have been a deal-breaker for her though.
She looks so CUTE!
I love them!
Joyce’s new glasses look great, can’t wait for the next storyline!
Aw, hi, pretty glasses girl!
These glasses are awful… :\\
Damn, I wish real optometrists could get you lenses same-day.
Huh, that batch of gravatars didn’t last long.
I’m okay with Ruth, she’s one of my favorites.
guess it depends where you are. I’ve never had to wait more than half a day for frames, but then I’m in the UK.
Maybe it’s because I get auto-darkening, scratchproof-coated lenses, or maybe it’s my touch of astigmatism mixed in with the nearsightedness, but I always have to wait a few days for new lenses.
Hooray, the happy medium between Dorothy’s “true biscuit” suggestion and Becky’s “LOUD AND PROUD” direction. They definitely suit her!
Truly all I can really think is how absolutely jealous I am of Joyce to be able to get her glasses the same day. I love being blind for weeks while I wait for my new fussy lenses to be made.
Those frames are much better than the red ones.
Wait what? I’m Booster instead of Fuckface now? Aw man, I liked having Fuckface. Well, Booster’s fine too.
I too had fuckface 🙁
oh those are cute!!!
oh god no
I do wonder now what would be the best response from Sarah?
Maybe: “Who are you? Why are you in my room. Get out! I am waiting for my lovable little sis Joyce”
half frames with a slightly less bright tone, called it.
noooo I had fuckface beforrree
not bothered enough to change it though
Why would anybody change away from Dina? You upgraded from reptile to dinosaur!
Well if we’re rolling….
I will accept Dotty but I might as well try one more combo
Joyce’s new glasses color match her scarf, mittens, and hat. And damn she looks cute in them. I approve very much.
a for effort, Sarah
She look like a racoon, in the first panel. Kinda cute.
Oooh, new avatar time? I wonder who I’ll get.
YES I GOT GLASSES JOYCE
Idk how I feel about the glasses honestly, it kinda looks like she’s wearing big old goggles to me.
Glasses when you have gigantic eyes is such a pain. Any round ones just make them look even bigger, but smaller ones don’t fully cover them. At least thick frames kind of counter the effect a little.
-Speaking as a fellow giant-eye person.
Also I’m gonna see what avatar I get now
okay I guess I didn’t turn off the custom one correctly but it should work now I think
fine i give up
Oh there we go. Not much of a change in the end lol
oh wait now the other ones reverted too so this doesn’t make any sense now
I think it’s because her eyes are so big they fill her new frames, and we’re not used to seeing her in glasses yet so at a glance it looks like her eyes are outlined in blue.
She literally picked one of my favorite colors though so I approve of these glasses.
Looks like Jocelyn’s. Nice choice, unobtrusive.
Sarah’s correct. It’s a really nice color.
Goes well with her eyes, which is fortunate given where glasses are worn.
Let’s see if deleting my custom Gravatar does anything…
Bespectacled Joyce! Not Carla, but Cute!
Sarah’s so pretty, is she wearing lipstick now?
There was never a right answer, Sarah. You were a fool for even trying to please Joyce in this scenario :v
Or you could compliment her scarf, because scarfs are adorable
The truth is…the game was rigged from the start.
The gap between Joyce getting glasses and being able to buy a magnet of her with glasses is gonna be rough.
No, right level. Those are cute glasses. They look good on her.
I had to buy my first pair of glasses today, so I’m really feeling Joyce’s pain. The air in the eye thing is horrid.
These will end up being Chekhov’s glasses. Maybe she will notice that she and her sister look like….sisters.
oh thank gods it’s the the “evil teacher” red glasses from yesterday
not*
I agree, I did not like them. These actually look cute, and kinda like mine except teal instead of purple.
Oooh, a new character!
Those glasses look nice on her. And the colour is coordinated with her toque, scarf and mitts…or gloves. Right now they look like mitts.
So I had to check the cast page to see the new look, and reading it, saw that Dorothy is listed as her best friend but not Becky and I have to cackle at Becky because I’m mean.
This is also a test to see what my other email looks like cause I’m curious.
Yeah….no. No horny lesbian that is honestly a jerky boss, I feel bad for Jennifer. Seriously, get that girl a girlfriend.
Take the compliment as a win. I think those are rare from Sarah.
Gotta agree with Sarah, nice color. They look good on her.
Ah sweet, Fuckface!!! Hell yeah, this site gets me!
niiice
oh it really did re-roll, huh
xD omg too accurate
The red ones were better. But probably red is not Joyce’s favorite color.
The glasses look great on her. I get she’s self-conscious but Sarah’s trying!
i hope the bonus patreon strip is just joyce trying on new glasses and making facial expressions of her reactions
oh fuckface isn’t too bad…lets do one roll though…
SHE’S SO ADORABLE AAAAAAAAAA
Man, when I got my glasses, I was thrilled with how well I could suddenly see. Vision goes so slowly that you accept it as normal, and then suddenly everything is high-def.
Im still not sure what her problem with glasses is
I’m reading it as ‘there’s been enough change in her life in the last 4 months and she’s uncomfortable with it enough as it is and doesn’t need more change to rub in the fact that she’s changing.’
It’s not about the glasses.
I like how the frame color matches her eyes
It matches her hat and scarf!
Omg,,,,,omg.,,,., Shes so. Cute. 🥺
Oooh they do suit her! Also wondering if icon changed. I was Billie for a long time and then Amber with the new roll.
Ah it’s the same! Fair enough.
Yeah, my normal email uncaps locked was changed to Becky with the new season update, and is still Becky and I am not fond of her.
I think she looks better with a smaller pair of glasses, like the first ones she tried, but these are still cute on her. Unlike the first pair, she looks a bit nerdier, but that’s not a bad thing.
think Robin’s “Im smart” glasses might work well for Joyce. then again those are close enough to “sexy librarian” that it’s probably just my bias showing.
aw hell yeah
Joyce seems to think that all change is a bad thing and getting use to new things is indoctrination. She was probably excepting Sarah to back up her anti-change. Her glasses match her hat and her scarf.
Now that bespectacled Joyce has appeared, there are 24 gravatars you can have,
She does look great, though. 🙂
lemme just say that you’ve done a great job of drawing “joyce with glasses” to still look like joyce, the way the blue frames are sort of sprinkled into her visual signature without taking over
I am disappointed that no one has made the “WRONG LEVEEEEEER!” joke for this strip.
Rerolling
Third times the charm
