If Walky is anything like me, he’s fantastic at arithmetic (I can do big multiplications fairly easily), but trash at applied math like theorems.
I think it’s because arithmetic is mostly figuring out shortcuts to make processes faster, while applied math is pretty contextual and a lot of the way it’s taught is pretty… dry.
I think he’s fine with math you can glom onto in a quick flash of insight but gets in trouble when it gets abstract enough to require sustained effort.
I breezed through algebra, geometry, and trig, but hit a wall with calculus, so I can relate.
Similar experience, although I think the way it was presented was a big problem, at least for me. I learned a lot more calculus in physics class than I did in calc class.
I went through uni (well, I say “went through”; one year and then I crashed and burned) with undiagnosed dyscalculia. So I pretty much followed how applied maths worked in theory, and then fell apart when I had to plug in actual numbers and add them up. Fun times.
See, that last line made my mind immediately go to Dinosaur Comics. And to me Walky seems like the kinda guy who would absolutely do the whole repeating assets thing.
That reminds me of that one picture of Sarah and Joyce doing laundry. Sarah’s sitting on one washing machine reading a book, Joyce is sitting on the one that’s running with a o.o expression.
That’s a favorite of mine. From personal experience: Lower your voice if you’re gonna ask a librarian if they have 57 Varieties of Ketchup. It must be pretty racy.
Exactly. If she’s withholding jobs from her reporters because of her obsession with the local superheroes then she isn’t doing her jog and is harming the students who are paying to be there to learn how to be reporters…
In a few years, someone will find that crumpled-up piece of notepaper in a teacher’s file somewhere, realize, “Oh shnikeys, this is a David Walkerton original!” and sell it on eBay for $40. From there, it makes its way into the Billy Ireland Comics Museum in Ohio, and is appraised for thousands of dollars.
I think she might surprise people, especially if she gets an outlet for the stupidity around her…you don’t have to actually like your collaborators, just reach a mutual understanding about the product
I don’t know about the online versions, but they sure as hell don’t do the print versions that often. In fact, right now it is only once a week. I think it was was twice a week before the world was all covered in death.
No, all fortunate. Dina deserved someone who is OK with her quirkiness and near obsession with paleontology, Daisy is simply too quirky and obsessed even for the fun loving Becky.
Also Daisy might have been a little quick for Becky. Becky should get to go at her own pace, and something tells me that Daisy’s pace is “let’s have all the sex immediately, only because we can’t go back in time and have already had sex months ago”
Throw her at Grace, Mandy, and Sierra’s polycule and see what happens. Maybe there will be a violent reaction, or maybe she’ll stagger out 17 hours later with newfound clarity.
Damn, the first time I got published, I was paid in…academic kudos? I guess? I’d have appreciated $5. I mean, I probably would have spent it on cigarettes, but still.
I was just in Safeway today and bought a package of 4 pork buns for $5. Also a pudding cake ring for $5.
So, Cake and Pork Buns!! Sounds like a Walky kind of diet.
Do college newspapers normally publish daily editions? Because if not it’s gonna take him a lot longer to get that much money than he seems to think it will.
I mean Jennifer, fuck I’m sorry I tried but once you get used to addressing character by a certain name it’s hard to just change the habit.
It’s like how we’ve been calling Andriod 18 by her number for decades and then DB Super comes around and gives her the name lazuli but we’ve all already gun used to call her 18.
“We want you to stay. The community’s grateful. You can pack all this away in case there’s ever trouble. You and your boy can have a good life. He could be a child for a while.”
“You woke it up! Do you have any idea how long it took me to get it to sleep?”
“Give him to me.”
“Not so fast! You can’t just leave a child all alone like that. You know, you have an awful lot to learn about raisin’ a young one.”
I’ve always been mildly annoyed with the “Baby Yoda” moniker myself, anyway (at least in part because certain family members kept getting confused by it and thinking that the Child was literally Yoda, but as a baby).
If you’re from a different timeline, and perhaps escaped the whole COVID-lockdown nightmare of 2020 in this one, then a Happy Yuletide to you as well, sir. Do you offer sightseeing trips to your reality?
Like hell there’s a former member of Congress who’s taking up a job as a campus professor before even finishing up her last week of her term and a new masked Prowler on the run and the local paper can’t think of anything to write about? Finding a story shouldn’t be hard.
She comes across or seems older than the usual cast. I’ve probably got it wrong but she appears to me to be in her mid 20s at least so maybe some arn’t thinking of her as a student (I’m not trying to pair her up with a teacher)
We’ve had TAs with subordinate students and Robin attempting to be with teacher. Daisy comes across as a graduate student rather than undergrad. Not much of a leap to predict that as a possible plot point or relationship even if its not great moral lesso .
Is anyone covering the beat on the troubling trend of men repeatedly harrassing women out alone at night on campus? Or why costumed vigilante students seem to be the only ones actively trying to stop it? If I were Jennifer that’s the angle I’d pitch. Maybe interview some of the girls. Hell she even knows a few that were targeted last semester! It happened just last night! It covers costumed vigilantes and might actually help the campus.
You think? Get the student council to toss a couple of thousand more into the pot. Paying by the cartoon strip will work wonders. Require a couple of backup strips for when deadlines aren’t met.
If it’s like the real-world version, the paper is independent of the university and certainly doesn’t have to rely on “the student council” for funding, which is fortunate.
The student government at my alma mater recently made a play to get prior review of articles in the campus paper (also independent, I’m happy to say), because the fratority folks were upset by a headline.
Jennifer is going through one of the hardest professional experiences possible: Meeting the boss when nothing that you say or offer is of any importance or interest to them.
Meanwhile, Walky is Willis’s current self-insert confirmed!
And that makes it sound like Willis’s lawyer’s. In the DOA universe Monkey Master was a successful animated series which probably means it was acquired at some point by Disney or some other front for the HA.
So Willis, remembering that more than one famous cartoonist got their start drawing for a student newspaper or a company newsletter, figured “What the hell, why not?” …. and here we are now.
A comic strip made by Walkie… This sounds amazing! Finally that journal will have something good inside! Because a newspaper who have reporters like is probably very horrible.
Also 5 bucks a strip? I don’t like Walky but dude is getting ripped off. It’s a lot of work to make professional and quality comics and he’s doing all the writing, editing, drawing, and lettering. That’s before inking and coloring if he chooses. I guess the real payment is having a credit on his resume for a paid gig and a reference. But dude is better off self publishing on anyone of a thousand sites to gauge interest and setting up a patreon.
Five bucks would get you a quick sketch on a piece of notebook paper!
It’s a college newspaper strip, Daisy will be lucky if he erases the pencil after inking it with Sharpie. (Or gets something NOT drawn in Paint at 72 DPI with a mouse.)
So Walky follows Jennifer around all day, forces himself into her meeting with her boss, brings up his own superhero persona so that Jennifer is forced to waste more time hunting superheroes instead of anything that might involve real journalist work, and then he gets a gig instead of her.
I think this is around the point that I’d start shouting if I was in her position. Being annoying is one thing, but messing with someone’s work is crossing a line – regardless of whether this is more Daisy’s fault than Walky’s.
It’s a good thing Walky is universally loved or him being rewarded for acting extremely annoying and borderline disrespectful would be upsetting.
All the very fine points you’ve made aside, dude’s getting paid in peanuts for this. Almost any amount of work he puts into this will be more than the gig is worth and he’ll basicallg be wasting his time. He couldn’t e ven buy lunch with this pay unless it’s off the dollar menu. He could barely afford a cup of coffee. Unless he gets insanely famous from this strip I think he actually lost here.
The first thing we saw in this meeting was Daisy asking Billie for more pictures of Amazi-Girl. AG is gone. Last we heard, everything except those submitted campus interest stories was full. If there’s no new hero, the most likely answer isn’t ‘You can do this instead’ it’s ‘well, guess we don’t need Billie then’. Walky bringing up a new hero IS newsworthy and it’s something Billie can cover, as opposed to her begging for something else that may not even exist.
As for him getting a job, I didn’t see Billie offering to draw a new strip.
Does this mean Season 2 will have more Daisy appearances than Season 1? Her on-point normcore outfits and unquenchable thirst deserve more screen time!
well, at least his math is getting better
there’s an amount that I imagine his comic will look like this tho (but with more T. Rex)
Fun times.
This is the opposite of me–got an A in calculus but if someone asks me what 2 x 9 is I’ll probably use my fingers to count
Problems like this are pretty easy to mental-math if you can buffer a few values and break them down:
$11 x 6 = $66
$66 = $60 + $6
$60 x 5 = $300
$6 x 5 = $30
$300 + $30 = $330.
or $6*5=30, 11*30=330
I mean, probably not. That was basic arithmetic. College math is stuff like derivations and discrete math.
I fuckin’ hated discrete math.
See, that last line made my mind immediately go to Dinosaur Comics. And to me Walky seems like the kinda guy who would absolutely do the whole repeating assets thing.
I’m actually hoping that he dramatizes the adventurers of Night-Guy. Kind of like how Lamont Cranston did with his radio show.
Did for the Shadow with his radio show.
More T Rex? Does that mean Walky is secretly Ryan North?
Not nearly tall enough.
I’m actually impressed that he got that math right.
Same here.
…and per Willis’ twitter feed: Walky’s “poking at his phone specifically for this reason”, so I guess I missed that.
Walky would make an excellent cartoonist I think!
And Merry Christmas to all those of y’all who are celebrating today.
Walky’s comic would probably be an even more juvenile, much less literate Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (but with xkcd quantities of math jokes)
That sounds like my kinda comic strip!
Right. Grav roulette.
HA. Sweet.
Agreed! He already has the low salary expectations and the ability to live on ramen and hope down.
Nachos and hope. But yeah.
Get help, Daisy.
Get laid, Daisy.
Get Tinder, Daisy.
Get up on the washing machine, Daisy.
Oh. So you know about the sweet spot.
Let’s just say I know how to find the little pickle ornament in the Christmas tree.
…I reluctantly agree. It’s not even a healthy obsession, it’s hurting others.
I lost track. Who was it damaging?
Me. My sides are aching from laughter.
She denied Jennifer work because she had no pictures of her latest conceptual crush.
Exactly. If she’s withholding jobs from her reporters because of her obsession with the local superheroes then she isn’t doing her jog and is harming the students who are paying to be there to learn how to be reporters…
He’s gonna go to Joyce and she’s gonna supply the art, isn’t she?
Nah, it’ll be Mary.
then everything will be the same anime guy…unfortunately
He can do the art himself, like that time he doodled a T-Rex eating Jason (o no, my bowtie)
Knowing Willis…yep. But I’d actually like Malaya to get the chance to do it, she’d actually do well in this IMHO
Malaya could do the art, but I can’t see her cracking a joke.
Or a smile.
Seeing Walky writing and having Malaya deal with him would be fun though
I think she might surprise people, especially if she gets an outlet for the stupidity around her…you don’t have to actually like your collaborators, just reach a mutual understanding about the product
Seems like Walky’s pretty good at drawing, if the random doodles he’s drawn in his math classes are any indication.
Can’t forget when he drew Jason getting eaten by a T-rex as his notes, also in math class.
I’d be worried he’s still too much like his Walkyverse self, inventing imaginary anatomy.
Weren’t those Sal’s notes?
Nah, Joyce will do the scripts.
Incoming Roomies! By Joyce and Walky
When did IU start publishing a paper six days a week?
Maybe it includes a week’s worth of comics?
For the online editions?
I thought that was the joke. That it doesn’t.
I don’t know about the online versions, but they sure as hell don’t do the print versions that often. In fact, right now it is only once a week. I think it was was twice a week before the world was all covered in death.
Anyone else think it’s both fortunate and unfortunate Becky and Daisy did not meet before Dina locked that down?
No, all fortunate. Dina deserved someone who is OK with her quirkiness and near obsession with paleontology, Daisy is simply too quirky and obsessed even for the fun loving Becky.
Also Daisy might have been a little quick for Becky. Becky should get to go at her own pace, and something tells me that Daisy’s pace is “let’s have all the sex immediately, only because we can’t go back in time and have already had sex months ago”
Perhaps Leslie could introduce her to Mindy.
Throw her at Grace, Mandy, and Sierra’s polycule and see what happens. Maybe there will be a violent reaction, or maybe she’ll stagger out 17 hours later with newfound clarity.
(That’s how chemistry works, right?)
No, physics. You throw something at something else. The harder, the better.
So you’re saying we need a lesbian particle accelerator. We need to get CERN in on this!
Not really given Becky wants to save herself for her true love.
Willis is gonna be channeling this next story arc, I see.
I put Walky on a faster track to becoming a pornlord though.
I mean, it will be a faster step to the Internet and that’s halfway there.
Nah, Joyce is the Pornlord (Phallady), Walky is the successful comic artist.
They can collaborate.
Julia Gray Rules the Skies!
Want!
Daisy really needs some action. Or just more satisfying porn.
I’m betting that Walky’s comics are gonna look an awful lot like Willis’ early work.
Any takers?
Not touching that bet.
Damn, the first time I got published, I was paid in…academic kudos? I guess? I’d have appreciated $5. I mean, I probably would have spent it on cigarettes, but still.
That’s enough money to pay for a plate of nachos a day for 55 of those 66 days.
I was just in Safeway today and bought a package of 4 pork buns for $5. Also a pudding cake ring for $5.
So, Cake and Pork Buns!! Sounds like a Walky kind of diet.
So, “Krafty Knights”?
Seriously, a story using loosely-redone versions of the Shovel Knight and Castle Crasher characters would be great.
So basically Daisy is assuming that this totally not male person is
A. interested in girls.
B. Someone she’d find attractive.
C. Interested in her specifically.
Nah, she just wants masturbation fodder, doesn’t matter if the girl is interested in her.
(Does anyone else see Daisy as a sort of female neckbeard?)
Yep.
And why DOES J Jonah Jameson always wants pictures of Spider-Man?
(No! He’s a menace to society! I don’t like him at all, baka!)
Walky is really underestimating the work involved here vs the pay offered.
Probably overestimating his own motivation once the novelty wears off.
Walky can just knock out a cool comic during math class. He regularly does so, he just hasn’t been paid for it yet.
Do college newspapers normally publish daily editions? Because if not it’s gonna take him a lot longer to get that much money than he seems to think it will.
Plot twist Walky later comes out as a trans girl, Daisy has a very specific form of psychic power.
No. Walky’s cis.
Nightguy comes out as trans.
Hey look at this way Billie atleast your advice about networking paid off. His connection with you got him a job.
I mean it was Baby Yoda all this time and now we’re supposed to call her Grogu.
Him.
Isn’t it a green plushie?
And why the assumption of him?
Its not an assumption, he is male.
When Jon Favreau calls Grogu him you can assume Grogu is male.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwwrezdcLiA&feature=emb_title
https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Grogu
Also dialogue from the show itself:
“We want you to stay. The community’s grateful. You can pack all this away in case there’s ever trouble. You and your boy can have a good life. He could be a child for a while.”
“You woke it up! Do you have any idea how long it took me to get it to sleep?”
“Give him to me.”
“Not so fast! You can’t just leave a child all alone like that. You know, you have an awful lot to learn about raisin’ a young one.”
Pfft, it was never Baby Yoda. It was The Child. And adjusting to Grogu hasn’t been very hard, honestly.
I’ve always been mildly annoyed with the “Baby Yoda” moniker myself, anyway (at least in part because certain family members kept getting confused by it and thinking that the Child was literally Yoda, but as a baby).
If dudes can be named Guy, then Yoda can be both his name and the name of his species.
Its been lazuli for years now I think, it’s just being acknowledged now, which i wasn’t aware of
18 is a better name, anyway.
What is that in McNuggets?
Have a cool Yule, denizens of this timeline!
If you’re from a different timeline, and perhaps escaped the whole COVID-lockdown nightmare of 2020 in this one, then a Happy Yuletide to you as well, sir. Do you offer sightseeing trips to your reality?
Did Hillary just win her second term?
Yes, but only because of not wanting to switch leaders in the middle of the Second Korean War.
If Billie really wants that job she can invent a Nightgirl persona and take pictures of herself.
Hey, it worked for Peter Parker in most versions of the Spider-Man mythos!
NightGirl!
Stalks the night!
Destroys evil dreams!
Yayyy, Walky found his calling.
This better mean that all that time he spent doodling and drawing fanart of Dexter monkey Masters in class had paid off.
Happy Chrispilum, folks. Don’t forget to remember to forget.
I have no idea what to expect from Wally drawing comics. I’m not used to him adding commitments and being motivated. I don’t trust it.
Hope everyone enjoys their coal from Santa as much as I will.
“What about me? Do you have something for me?”
Billie, that’s not how it works. *You* are the reporter. *You* are supposed to find the newsworthy material.
She’s asking about beats. This paper hires people to do specific ones, like sports, politics, sex columns, etc.
Like hell there’s a former member of Congress who’s taking up a job as a campus professor before even finishing up her last week of her term and a new masked Prowler on the run and the local paper can’t think of anything to write about? Finding a story shouldn’t be hard.
The editor is onl interested in things that promote her hornies. All other beats are already covered by other people.
Robin is female and possibly queer! Daisy and her would be fascinating. Especially as Robin will only date her to make Leslie jealous!
why do people keep trying to pair up daisy with teachers, she is a student 😐
I made this mistake in the past when I wasn’t aware Daisy was a student.
All US Representative terms end January 3rd…her term has already ended, it was a Willis error unless this very day in the strip is set on January 2nd
damb paying for comics for the newspaper? from a student publication?? mine doesn’t aaaaand maybe that’s why we have trouble holding on to artists
Meanwhile, Walky is Willis’s current self-insert confirmed!
so now jennifer has to be peter parker to walky’s nightgirl or j. joline jamison here won’t hire her at the newspaper? is that the plot?
I do wonder… what are the odds of them pestering Sal into dressing up as Nightgirl so Billie can get Daisy those pictures.
All they need is a wig and some poor lighting, they might get away with it for a while.
David Willis : An Origin Story
😛
He’s gonna make a comic called Dormies and follow it up with a Dexter/Monkey Master fancomic called It’s Willis!
And then he will hear from the lawyers.
And that makes it sound like Willis’s lawyer’s. In the DOA universe Monkey Master was a successful animated series which probably means it was acquired at some point by Disney or some other front for the HA.
I find it hard to believe on a college campus as big as Indiana University there’s no else who wants to draw a comic strip.
I believe Daisy is terrible at her job.
i mean you’d think but i’m pretty sure the only reason i got into the student paper was nobody else applied
like, there was a big empty comic strip spot every day that said “HEY SOMEBODY DRAW SOMETHING HERE, FOR MONEY” and yet
Merry holiday everyone!
Also 5 bucks a strip? I don’t like Walky but dude is getting ripped off. It’s a lot of work to make professional and quality comics and he’s doing all the writing, editing, drawing, and lettering. It’s a college newspaper strip, Daisy will be lucky if he erases the pencil after inking it with Sharpie. (Or gets something NOT drawn in Paint at 72 DPI with a mouse.)
i got paid $2 per strip for Roomies!
Back in the Dim Ages? But what are they paying now?
$2 in 1997 dollars is… $3.24 in 2020.
Walky got a good deal.
Is it a good deal or is the society we live in really unfair and routinely undervalues not just artists but working class people in general?
Let me rephrase: he got a better deal than Willis did.
To play the role of Sirksome for a minute…
So Walky follows Jennifer around all day, forces himself into her meeting with her boss, brings up his own superhero persona so that Jennifer is forced to waste more time hunting superheroes instead of anything that might involve real journalist work, and then he gets a gig instead of her.
I think this is around the point that I’d start shouting if I was in her position. Being annoying is one thing, but messing with someone’s work is crossing a line – regardless of whether this is more Daisy’s fault than Walky’s.

Naah Walkys always been annoying and his actions during the last kidnapping were…well we won’t go there
Have to say though I’m enjoying how Jennifers going this arc, it’ll be interesting to see where it goes from here
The first thing we saw in this meeting was Daisy asking Billie for more pictures of Amazi-Girl. AG is gone. Last we heard, everything except those submitted campus interest stories was full. If there’s no new hero, the most likely answer isn’t ‘You can do this instead’ it’s ‘well, guess we don’t need Billie then’. As for him getting a job, I didn’t see Billie offering to draw a new strip.
I refuse to believe that this isn’t exactly how Willis got his first cartoonist gig.
Wince Walky isn’t in the same headspace as Willis was when he did Roomies, I’m hoping Walky’s strip is Roomies art with 9CL content.
Does this mean Season 2 will have more Daisy appearances than Season 1? Her on-point normcore outfits and unquenchable thirst deserve more screen time!
I wonder if a lot of starting Cartoonists think like this.
