I didn’t know College newspapers had real comics. I thought they just ran lame-ass student comics like- whatisnaname- “Dormies” or something.
Or “Doonesbury”. (Started life as a college newspaper comic in the Yale Daily News, back in the 70’s.)

It’s been done. Offhand, I can think of two examples – the original Red Tornado, Ma Hunkle (though I’m not entirely sure if Ma actively cultivated the confusion), and (somewhat more obscure), the character Bat from the Villainous Nights series in the Lovestruck visual novel app.

… I can’t believe I forgot Cybersix…although the genderbending is in her civilian identity, so I guess I can be forgiven for it…
The supers novel I’ve been writing for the last several NaNos has a hero who does that. He’s basically The Thing, but can switch between regular and extra-crunchy at will. She’s a skinny blonde bass player in her natural form, but because his powered form is big, broad-shouldered, has a deep, gravely (literally) voice, a non-gendered supranym, and doesn’t have a couple of big round boulders mounted up front for no goddamn reason, everybody just assumed Hard Rock was a guy, and because she doesn’t really care (she’s super-laid-back — literally; there’s some power stuff amplifying her natural mellowness… and also she smokes a lot of weed) and it’s good secret identity protection, he went with it.
(None of this has come up in the actual story. My PoV character has only met Hard Rock, and doesn’t know Katrina Kingston yet.)
There’s a current web comic using that premise for a minor recurring character, the comic is “Does Not Play Well With Others”, I don’t remember the villain’s name but his secret identity is his “daughter” Janice.
She calls herself Artificer, but is better known as Tekmage, because that’s the name “his” heroic nemesis Falchion uses when talking to the press. And just to keep things complicated, Janis and Craig (Falchion’s civilian identity) are dating.
That is on my favourite webcomics list. Also, there is the webcomic “Magical Girl Neil”, he is a guy who turns into a girl when he transforms. Although that one is either dead or in hibernation right now.

One day when cons finally come back Daisy will finally find her cute costumed gf.
And then Daisy dumps her when she insists that, while the cape-love is cute, she really needs to get dressed for work.
Because they’re not real. Not knowing her identity is a minor problem compared to that.
There’s always like the show gladiators or whatever though. Is that still a thing? They have some muscular spandex ladies that I recall. Or at least the one shown in the UK in the 90s did.
American Gladiators? That was a weird show, but I guess you had to take what you could get back before most houses had cable and the Internet.
For some reason I used to really like that show? …maybe bc it was the only watchable thing on after Saturday morning cartoons (remember when that was a thing? …no? ack, dating myself)

Okay, so I’m predicting that for some obscure reason Sal is going to have to put on the Nightguy costume for some reason, and thus create confusion to Nightguy’s gender inadvertently give Daisy the false hope that Nightguy is a lady.
Or alternately, Malaya dresses as Nightguy, and Daisy is like “I knew Nightguy was a hot lady– I mean, a lady”, and then Malaya is like “Meh, I’m not sure that’s even true.”
On one hand Jennifer encountering Walky as Nightguy could be funny, like she meets up with him and she knows off the bat it’s him but plays along just to get her job done. BUUUT on the other hand we all know her intuition is garbage when it comes to the obvious so I wouldn’t put it past her to not recognize him. She probably still thinks Sal is Amazi-girl.
We should all admire Daisy’s determination when it comes to sexy superheroes.

“Heathcliff” doesn’t run in my local paper so i assume it’s about Wuthering Heights, but it’s set in the Middle Ages and Heathcliff is a knight, to explain the helmet
