I was impervious to cold when I was growing up on the Allegheny Spur, but three years in the Mojave Desert spoiled it for me. Now I put on my long johns when the temperature drops to 70.
So I googled it, and came up negative for a geographic location for Allegheny Spur. I found spurs for cowboys, an arms dealer from the civil war and the county of Pittsburgh. Is it the little notch that pokes up from Pennsylvania to Lake Erie?
If it’s dry, I’ll put the trash out barefoot in the winter. I wouldn’t go on a three mile run, but asphalt is surprisingly tolerable on a sunny day in the middle of winter. Jagged rock salt crystals hurt worse than the cold.
If it’s wet though, you need at least flip-flops or something because it gets cold fast. Not directly touching the cold, wet ground makes a huge difference.
I’m pretty oblivious to temperature extremes – they affect me, I just ignore them. Sometimes, even to my detriment.
There’s also the fact that I’ve had severe second-degree sunburn (like, oozing pus-level damage) on my thighs twice in my life, so I wear jeans in 100-degree weather, even at the beach. My spouse thinks I’m insane. Yes, I’m pale and pasty, deal with it.
Depends on what part of Tennessee you’re in. Memphis area stays miserably hot a good chunk of the year, but you’d be surprised how many people move to the mountains and think it’ll never be cold. No, it gets cold, it’s just that we get ice rather than snow most of the time.
What? Not hardly. Even if we get Walky in Full Crisis for all 5-6 panels, then AT BEST thats 1 panel per 4 hours * 3600s/hr * 1 frame per panel = 1/14400 fps.
I’m side-eying Walky’s lack of hand-covering pretty hard myself. The snow present suggests sub-zero air temperatures, and that’ll freeze fingers pretty dang quick, especially if there’s any wind around.
I mean, your fingers’ll be chilly, but unless you’re hitting around -20°C or below for an extended period of time, you don’t really run the risk of frostbite, especially if you keep ’em dry.
Frost*bite* is unlikely unless he’s in a gale or out there for like an hour, but numbness and frost*nip*, where your fingers go all tingly once you get them in a warm place? Absolutely possible.
If it’s just a degree or two below, calm, and he’s only out for a few minutes, e.g. walking from one building to another, he’ll be fine. Start altering those parameters and you can end up in a lot of trouble.
‘course, I carry winter gear with me in high summer, so maybe I’m a smidge more paranoid about it than some :v
Teenagers and cold weather. Meh, makes me grumpy! Youth is wasted on the youth. If teens knew exactly how cool it is to be a teen, they’d be a lot more chill, and drive more carefully. And drink less.
It’s a paradox, when teens think they are being “in-crowd, totally cool” is when they are the most likely to pull a stupid and die. When they ARE the most kieewl and chill is when they are just being themselves, no masks, no put on pretentiions, just -real-.
I dunno, I grew up in SoCal and last time I bundled up to go someplace snowy, I ended up removing layers because I got too hot.
But my mom is from Minnesota and my great-grandparents were from Norway and Sweden so maybe my resistance to cold is genetic. XD
Truly I despise CA. It’s *November* and it’s still too freaking warm here right now. I’ve been running the AC all week. My Norwegian-Minnesotan grandmother calls November in California “sunbathing weather.”
I love the cold weather and tend to function better when it is cold. That being said, they are asking if you’re cold because they care Sal, and also because it’s more “normal” to be cold. 😛
I actually like the colder weather better. At least when it’s too cold you can put on more layers. When it’s too hot there’s only so much clothes you can take off before people start looking at you funny.
Shared office thermostats suck in the winter, too. Back in the Before Times, when that was a thing, I’d be sweating bullets while the folks I was trying to help were somehow shivering when the office was 70 degrees. I guess because it looks cold outside, it must be cold inside?!
Yuuuup. I don’t tolerate heat well and get hot too easily and I LOVE winter, but I live in California and summer is utterly miserable. I literally feel sick for the entire summer every year (headaches, sluggish, etc). I hate it.
It’s November and I’m still running the AC because anything above 70 feels too hot.
Sal, you lived in Tennessee for five years, that’s why people are asking.
And Walky, running hot, in my understanding, actually makes you feel colder because the huge difference in body temp and normal temp. I think. I’m not a science person so someone explain if I’m wrong about that.
A bit of pot calling the kettle black there Sal. Right now the Walkertons are BOTH sporting the sexy “just got out of bed” look. Clearly being casually sexy is genetic.
Haha, there’s a YouTube video of Watergate bad guy G Gordon Liddy making some microwave popcorn just by staring down the bag. I’ll bet she learned it from him.
Sal lives in the same dorm hallway as Joyce and Sarah. She’s gotten up earlier and has been waiting in the cold for them, rather than waiting for them inside.
And, apparently, still taking it in the morning. When I was in college, I never got lucky enough to take the next course in a chain at the same time I did in the previous quarter. Can not accept, suspension of disbelief broken.
The day Sarah is a morning person is the day we know that the end of the world has come!
Seriously, though, I’m loving the way that Walky and Sal are rediscovering sibling snark. They love each other but that doesn’t make either of them feel obliged to avoid teasing the other when necessity requires it!
Ohgodno I’m freezing just by looking at these two. My body is perpetually frozen, I bust out the long sleeves when the temperature drops beneath 20°C/68°F :’D
I can testify that apparently you can train yourself to deal with coldish temperatures.
I had a coleague right from sub-saharian Africa.
He told me he thought he would end up dying when he came studying in a (rather mild) cold part of my country.
When we worked together, he was sporting short T-shirts until temp got below 15°C (where he deigned use long sleeves, and a light jacket when rain was around).
One day I asked how he did pull that. His answer: “I only take cold showers, and it worked”. I never tried to follow his path.
I’ve very hot natured. I pretty much never wear so much as a windbreaker. It’s agonizing because people notice and it draws attention and comment, which is awful. But then on the one day of the year so cold I want to wear something, I just suffer because wearing a jacket one time would draw even more attention.
That they are all taking math at the same time speaks to some deliberate coordination. Even if they are in different courses. At a Big Ten university, one could take basic statistics at several different times /days. Is Sarah in the math group? Pre-law can be just about anything. Journalism, history, a language by the three lawyers in my family. Is she being big sister enough to tie her schedule to Joyce’s?
At least in the previous semester, Sarah had a different class at this time (with Jacob), but they still walked together.
I assume the same still holds – Sarah’s not in their math class.
Is it just me or are Sal and Walky are slowly becoming the kind of (creepy) twins who make identical moves and expressions and are able to complete each other’s sentences?
Back when I had a full head of hair, I don’t think I ever managed to have it as neat as Wally’s for 10 minutes. Or, for that matter, as neat as Gary Busey’s. It was more like Einstein’s on a good hair day (good hair day for me, bad hair day for Einstein).
Fortunately, I did not have a full head of hair for the generally expected duration for a guy. I mean, I’m still not to the point where I’d be expected to be losing my hair, but I’ve been enjoying not having the least manageable subset of my hair for a quarter of a century now.
I miss having their imperviousness to cold, now I’m cold even in 80 degree weather in the sun while wearing a sweater
Yeah, I used to wear short sleeves to school on sub-freezing days. Now 68 degrees is a bit nippy. That’s what I get for moving to a nice climate LOL
I was impervious to cold when I was growing up on the Allegheny Spur, but three years in the Mojave Desert spoiled it for me. Now I put on my long johns when the temperature drops to 70.
My sister gets cold no matter the place or weather, it’s honestly impressive
Even in a hot tub? Or a sauna?
So I googled it, and came up negative for a geographic location for Allegheny Spur. I found spurs for cowboys, an arms dealer from the civil war and the county of Pittsburgh. Is it the little notch that pokes up from Pennsylvania to Lake Erie?
One January morning in high school (Indianapolis) I saw a dude walking through the snow from the bus in flip flops and board shorts.
I’ll still occasionally run out to the trash can (or the mail box) barefoot in the snow if I don’t have sandals handy.
It’s painfully cold but it doesn’t last once I’m back inside.
FIND GARY BUSEY
Your target is Gary Busey.
Hitman jokes, I love it!
On the one hand I’m jealous of Sal for keeping her imperviousness to cold through Tennessee weather.
But mostly heee, twinsies.
Depends on what part of Tennessee you’re in. Memphis area stays miserably hot a good chunk of the year, but you’d be surprised how many people move to the mountains and think it’ll never be cold. No, it gets cold, it’s just that we get ice rather than snow most of the time.
Embrace your inner Busey.
The Walkerton twins run warm because they are both overclocked.
Sal uses it to be extra cool, badass, and intimidating.
Walky is none of those things, but can run Crysis at almost 10 FPS.
What? Not hardly. Even if we get Walky in Full Crisis for all 5-6 panels, then AT BEST thats 1 panel per 4 hours * 3600s/hr * 1 frame per panel = 1/14400 fps.
Walky is anxious faster.
sarah’s face here new profile icon when
Wait, wait fuckin’ wait!
Walky!
Is that a shirt with a goddamn horizontal yellow stripe!?
We’re watching you, boy!
Meanwhile, the IW! reruns are on the storyline where Mike fights the giant frosted mutant honeybun.
COINCIDENCE?!
Probably.
SEMME doesn’t exist here… not that I know.
Dorothy goes to Yale next SEMME.
I cackled. Bravo!
Willis was waiting for the second semester to reintroduce SEMME.
It’s actually the last remaining silhouette in the character banner.
Math Squad: the hot new super team?
I remember MATHNET on Square One Television. Of course I was almost too old to enjoy it back then.
The story you’re about to see is a fib, but it’s short.
And you’re never to old to enjoy everything about Square One Television.
MathMan was the stuff of nightmares for tiny me. Rewatching it on YouTube now though, it’s hard to place why.
(Is that Don Adams doing the voiceover, or just a soundalike?)
Joyce is excited to see Walky?
Why do you think that?
“Hello math squad” is within normal operating parameters for the JoyceBot. Besides, Sal is there.
I’m liking the Lighthearted Twin Banter, it feels nice.
Don’t worry, Walky. You’ll never look as crazy as Gary Busey. Or Jake Busey.
As a rail-thin Californian I have always been very jealous of people who don’t get cold easily
*looks for Jimmy Fallon’s “Whip My Hair”*
I am very jealous of Walky and Sal right now
If I was dressed them in that weather, I would up a human popsicle in 5 seconds flat

‘course, I carry winter gear with me in high summer, so maybe I’m a smidge more paranoid about it than some :v
And just for contrast’s sake, I lived in Minnesota and Wisconsin for nearly my entire life and I rarely ever wore a hat or gloves.
I’m from Calgary, Alberta. So I get the joys of 40C degree swings over the course of a single day :v
Eh, he’ll be fine as long as he doesn’t touch the snow. Cold, dry air isn’t as bad as cold dampness.
It’s also quite possible it’s at least a little above freezing. Snow doesn’t disappear all at once.
Oh, if only it did…
True! But in full sunlight like shown, above-zero air temperatures will do a real number on it. And that looks like fairly freshly-fallen stuff, too.
I’m ill-equipped to cold weather, coming from California.
I’m fine with Busey-hair or even bedhead, Walky. 😛
I’m from the part of California that gets snow. I’ve always been pretty impervious to cold.
Now I live in Texas where the mist can be cut with a knife.
Houston where they get all the ocean humidity from the Gulff the cooling effect.
Teenagers and cold weather. Meh, makes me grumpy! Youth is wasted on the youth. If teens knew exactly how cool it is to be a teen, they’d be a lot more chill, and drive more carefully. And drink less.
So… if they knew they were cool they’d act more square?
It’s a paradox, when teens think they are being “in-crowd, totally cool” is when they are the most likely to pull a stupid and die. When they ARE the most kieewl and chill is when they are just being themselves, no masks, no put on pretentiions, just -real-.
If it’s any consolation, teenagers are the second most likely demographic to get hypothermia, after the very elderly.
Also, I’m pretty sure the cool kids right now are the ones who *are* wearing masks.
By Sarah’s look I can say Joyce woke her up, or Sarah is always in that mood.
That’s pretty much just Sarah’s default setting.
It just occurred to me we went through that entire intro chapter without Billie showing up at all.
She died surfing the time skip.
Surfing? Okay, let’s go with that.
She forgot to do the Time Warp
Again?
Yeah, I thought for sure we’d follow Lucy to her dorm room and Billie would be there, but no.
Yup. And without revealing the last silhouette in the cast picture.
Which may or may not be the same thing.
As someone who also runs unreasonably warm, it’s awesome in the winter, but it SUCKS in the summer.
Yup.
Shared office thermostats suck in the winter, too. Back in the Before Times, when that was a thing, I’d be sweating bullets while the folks I was trying to help were somehow shivering when the office was 70 degrees. I guess because it looks cold outside, it must be cold inside?!

It’s November and I’m still running the AC because anything above 70 feels too hot.
I love how both Sarah and Sal take part of the conversation as long as they do it under protest.
Sal, you lived in Tennessee for five years, that’s why people are asking.
And Walky, running hot, in my understanding, actually makes you feel colder because the huge difference in body temp and normal temp. I think. I’m not a science person so someone explain if I’m wrong about that.
Running hot, with good peripheral circulation, raises the equilibrium temperature at the nerve endings.
I’m half convinced Sal never lights her cigs. They just hang there, most of the time.
Much healthier that way. And they last a lot longer.
A bit of pot calling the kettle black there Sal. Right now the Walkertons are BOTH sporting the sexy “just got out of bed” look. Clearly being casually sexy is genetic.
That would probably be one of the easiest alleles ever to identify a survival advantage for.
Still lovin’ Sal’s hair.
Does she just… Not have a lighter?
She just lights it with a steely glare
Haha, there’s a YouTube video of Watergate bad guy G Gordon Liddy making some microwave popcorn just by staring down the bag. I’ll bet she learned it from him.
The Gary Busey comment from Walky cracked me up…
Maths Squad
They’s ‘merican. Math Squad.
Math Squad?
Math Squad. Less’en they all live in Maths Quad, they might still all be in Math Squad.
So if Lapis joined them, they’d be Math Squad Quad Clods.
Say THAT five times fast!
Or if they joined the equestrian team, wood shop and harpoon throwing society, they could be the Quad Clod Maths Sawed Prod Squad
You know, I have absolutely no conception of your gender, sex, or romantic preferences, but you should know I’m in love.
Sal lives in the same dorm hallway as Joyce and Sarah. She’s gotten up earlier and has been waiting in the cold for them, rather than waiting for them inside.
The trick is to never take off your wool hat. Speaking from experience.
Mike Nesmith agrees.
“Sarah also says hello.” “I do not.”
Wow, Sarah. Rude, much?
They would all think Sarah was ill if she wasn’t cranky and antisocial!
Welcome to the party pal.
Some might think that Joyce was rude putting words in Sarah’s mouth unbidden.
Not me, but some.
Wait, they’re still taking math? The ridiculously required course isn’t just a one-term thing?
And, apparently, still taking it in the morning. When I was in college, I never got lucky enough to take the next course in a chain at the same time I did in the previous quarter. Can not accept, suspension of disbelief broken.
The day Sarah is a morning person is the day we know that the end of the world has come!

Ohgodno I’m freezing just by looking at these two. My body is perpetually frozen, I bust out the long sleeves when the temperature drops beneath 20°C/68°F :’D
I don’t think my hair will ever be as messy as Gary Busey, but it definitely gradually gets more messy as the day goes on.
I can testify that apparently you can train yourself to deal with coldish temperatures.
I had a coleague right from sub-saharian Africa.

Walky isn’t could because of that BURN!
Ah ha, math class. Billie’s either going to show up to her class or… the mystery will continue.
Or Billie is enrolled in a different class of the same course.
Its a new semester, they have different classes now.
I’ve very hot natured. I pretty much never wear so much as a windbreaker. It’s agonizing because people notice and it draws attention and comment, which is awful. But then on the one day of the year so cold I want to wear something, I just suffer because wearing a jacket one time would draw even more attention.
Wonder if Math Squad is going to become a thing in the strip. Also, has the strip ever said what Sal’s major is? Besides being cool, of course.
Jeez Walky, would it kill you to carry a brush in that backpack? In sure there would be room.
Yea, it’s not like Mike is stuffing textbooks in there.
That they are all taking math at the same time speaks to some deliberate coordination. Even if they are in different courses. Yeah! Ain’t it heart-warming? 😀
Maybe.
They are making up for all those years of not being that.
How many maths make up a squad?
More than you can afford.
Squad refers to organization not size, though it implies a ‘small’ group. So it depends.
Standing in the shade in the winter sun makes Sarah’s complexion look pasty.
🙁
Before the skip, the shadows were shaded with generally warm colors. Now the shadows are cooler.
Compare today with this strip set at the same place:
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2017/comic/book-7/04-the-do-list/heard/
Hmmm, I dunno, Miss Ploofy… pot calling the kettle black and all that. If she put on a cap and yanked it off, her hair could empty buildings…
Oh right! They all walked to math class (or in Sarah’s case a nearby class) last semester, along with… with Billie, and… and Mike
Of course Walky has taken over the Superheroics… he’s wearing the yellow stripe!
I’m glad Sal is wearing her hair natural.
I wonder if Sal and Walky have some Nordic blood in their veins…
This Universe’s Head Alien was into transfusions instead of super-powers.
I used to be like that. And then I lived in California and Georgia for several years and lost a good chunk of my cold resistance 🙁
Back when I had a full head of hair, I don’t think I ever managed to have it as neat as Wally’s for 10 minutes. Or, for that matter, as neat as Gary Busey’s. It was more like Einstein’s on a good hair day (good hair day for me, bad hair day for Einstein).
