This Saturday and Sunday, I gonna be in CANADA! Come see me at TCAF (Toronto Comic Arts Festival) in, you know, Toronto! I’ll be at Table 248, Second Floor of the Toronto Reference Library. I’ll have books! I’ll have magnets! I’ll have prints! I’ll have an everlasting need to visit locations filmed in Short Circuit 2!
my trip to canada funded in part by a grant from the greater columbus arts council
so… no chat with Jocelyne? =(
(Jocelyne ALSO looks fantastic)
[also Sarah(‘s pumpkin {but also Sarah}) looks fantastic]
Joyce probably wasn’t going to get on that right away, anyhow. I feel like it’s a possible storyline ending, especially if Jocelyne outs herself and Joyce DOESN’T have a red freakout panel.
Or maybe the storyline ends with Joyce making some more pumpkins for the door. That would be nice too.
Not yet, anyway.
Pumpkins are awesome.
Also delicious. I make pumpkin soup, pumpkin oatmeal, and pumpkin muffins. And I’m always put in charge of the pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, because mine is the best.
It is the king of squashes.
I spliced two Alton Brown recipes for this past Thanksgiving. His peanut butter cup pie with his pumpkin pie filling instead of the peanut butter. So basically a pumpkin pie with a chocolate wafer crust and chocolate ganache topping. It was amazing.
damn i need to try that
oh, I has a new pie to try!
Alton Brown is someone I find very easy to learn cooking and baking from, and I enjoy how he teaches “the bones”.
Pumpkin mole.
I do think the pumpkin flavored everything got way over commercialized the last few years though.
Nope, that was Pumpkin Spice, the mixture of cinnamon and nutmeg used in most pumpkin pie recipes.
Pumpkin is actually pretty bland. But like most things, add enough sugar and spices and bake them for additional caramelization and they become delicious.
I’ve made a lot of pumpkin pies, but my favorite recipe for the past, oh, 10 years or so is pumpkin chiffon pie. It has all the goodness of a pumpkin pie but is a lot less dense. I find that to be a very good thing after a Thanksgiving meal, and preferable most other times as well.
Do you grow your own pumpkins? The flavor is even better when it’s fresh off the vine, believe me
Hell yeah it does, Sarah! TINY PUMPKIN, WOOOO!!!
🎶 Hold me closer, tiny pumpkin
Count the jack-a-lanterns on the highway….
Lay me down in sheets with eyeholes.
You had a busy day today~
Vulnerability is Sarah’s kryptonite!
…. so she’s like the opposite of superman, for whom kryptonite is his vulnerability?
Fuckin’ right, Sarah.
OK, I’m lost.
Here. Let me give you a star to steer by.

And.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2019/comic/book-9-comic/03-sometimes-the-sky-was-so-far-away/self/
Hi lost, I’m dad!
(I’m not really a dad, I have no excuse)
Too bad, cuz that was an excellent Dad joke!
Since they aren’t really a dad, though, making dad jokes just makes them a faux pa.
I think it’s gonna be hard to take this much father.
A-parent-ly so.
Exploring it father would take a patriarcheologist.
Are these puns a sire spot for you?
Mom’s the word.
Sarah’s too proud to admit she likes Halloween.
“I’m Sarah Clinton, and I’m here to scare the hell out of you!”
*looks for some Smashing Pumpkins to play*
Any requests?
Silverfuck?
I nominate “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.”
That or Cherub Rock
Everyone always recommends from their Siamese Dream album (or possibly Mellon Collie). But if you’re on a 90s nostalgia emo teenage trip (think Buffy’s emotional scenes), try out… well, all of Ava Adore, really, but particularly Behold! The Night Mare.
I’m glad someone remembers Adore! I think it’s one of their best albums, but it’s definitely underappreciated because of the timing of it and Jimmy Chamberlin’s absence. As much as I like Mellon Collie, I kind of prefer the one-two punch of Adore + Machina (“The Everlasting Gaze” is entirely underrated despite having been a single at the time). I’m also going to toss in “The End is the Beginning is the End” because Jimmy’s drumming is perfection and the Batman & Robin soundtrack is fantastic.
“Here Is No Why” should have been a massive single; don’t @ me
The End is the Beginning is the End
also The Beginning is the End is the Beginning
underappreciating the pumpkin was sarah’s bone to pick
“Underappreciated Pumpkin” is the name of my next country music band.
Sarah really spooked Joyce into an apology, eh?
booooooooooo
Yeah, that pun should be squashed.
Get it? Squash? Like a punkin?
THIS IS DUMBIVERSE, EVERYBODY MAKE A SCENE. TRICK OR TREAT TILL READ HALL GONNA DIE OF FRIGHT!
Guys I need help. I read this comic, and I received a warm fuzzy feeling from this interaction, and then my heart grew three sizes that day and now I need an ambulance cause I’m about to have a heart attack…
One way or another, Willis plans to kill us all through this comic.
I think what you have is heart worm.
Your heart is filled with worms.
Boo-ho-ho-ho-ho!
You too, huh?
Joyce realising how she could improve her behaviour towards her fellow person, part 93.
And she’s damn good at it. It took me literal years to undertand that a sincere apology and owning your mistakes were things you could do…
Wow! That was a great excuse from Joyce.
And Sarah owns the SHIT out of that pumpkin. Good on Sarah.
…I meant a great APOLOGY.
Sarah needs a skull mask to complete the costume.
ALL HAIL SKULLMASTER, MASTER OF SKULLS!
Skullmaster deserves a cookie for that.
See, now I’m just comparing Sarah and Faye, and… they’re more alike than I realized!
… I don’t think Sarah is nearly as good with kids, though >.>
While true, Sarah also lacks a chronic alcohol problem. Down in one place, up in another.
I think it would look better with a pumpkin mask.
Sarah’s Halloween love is so endearing, and I thought this was cool of Joyce. Friendship upgrade!
I’m wondering what everyone else’s Halloween costumes would be.
Lucy: Detective Pikachu, and you can’t convince me otherwise.
Ethan: Batman or one of the Transformers. Maybe a transformer batmobile? Whatever it is, it’s going to be something obscure that requires a lot of explanation.
Mike: Not sure what exactly, but he’d spend an inordinate amount of time on his costume and everyone would wonder whether it’s part of a scheme or not.
Robin wears her usual suit with a clown nose and wig…but if Leslie shows up she’ll rip it off to reveal the Leia Slave Outfit.
Walky will be in the proper court dress of Reginald, Duke of Thingley.
Sal and Amber dress up in their superhero suits to see if differing context stops people recognising them. There are… complications.
I agree, small Joyces are difficult… to hate for long. 😉
Wait I don’t remember, what happened this morning that Joyce should be wordy about?
*sorry
Not “wordy” lol
Sarah was – and is – clearly anxious about it.
Joyce wasn’t out of line or anything, but she didn’t take Sarah’s worries seriously either.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2019/comic/book-9-comic/03-sometimes-the-sky-was-so-far-away/decorations/
Excuse me, but there’s no actual clue for Joyce that Sarah is -worried-.
Only that Sarah’s confronting her over what she agrees with and what she’s against…
becky has context from the previos strips, but from Joyce’s point of view is more like Sarah’s just calling her an hypocrite for complaining of one thing but not the other, not that Sarah worries about what she would think…
In this strip, Joyce clearly recognises that she was flippant before.
…do you think she is wrong?
That’s the point.
WHERE was she flippant? They’re giving us character development without showing us the flaw beforehand, that’s the point I’m confused about.
If she knows the situation, she was informed off camera, so the confusion on my side is quite granted XD
I feel in this situation it’s more Joyce being aware that Sarah is taking this Halloween thing seriously and she remembered their morning conversation and is being overly apologetic to soothe her mood. It is not necessary but it is nice.
She was flippant in dismissing Sarah’s concerns about not offending her with Halloween decorations. Which makes sense to her since she doesn’t have any problems with Halloween, but from Sarah’s point of view, every such interaction is a minefield. Who knows what weird fundie programming she’ll trip over next?
It’s obvious to Joyce and Becky that Halloween is fine, but Sarah’s trying to avoid upsetting her and Joyce was blowing her off like she’s being silly.
People can make inferences about others they know. That seems like kind of an obvious point.
Spooky Sarah Cli-in-ton
Send shivers down your spine.
Heehee.
Strange tangent: I searched this up and found it was by Andrew (Lonely Boy) Gold, whose mom was the Hollywood dub-singer extraordinaire Marni Nixon.
bongo it’s adorable.
I understood that reference.
Wow david u really love drawing the most relatable shit here huh
I guess Sarah ended up murdereing whoever tried to clean the door earlier. The corpse’s in the shared bathroom
It’s much more likely that Sarah meekly stood by and let Agatha have her way because the alternative was social interaction and admitting to enjoy something. That’s quite genuinely sad and I’m hoping that something can be done about that.
Yeah, that’s what it looks like. There were a lot more pumpkins before and now there’s only one lone survivor.
Hopefully she’ll still get the super-cool witch shrouded in flames that Mary said she’d draw.
Something tells me that there’s one more person who needs Joyce’s help today.
At least one more. As always.
Sarah looks pretty badass in that skeleton shirt.
Especially in combination with that mock-me-if-you-dare-face
I think I missed something. I don’t remember her being flippant about anxieties.
I remember Becky asking Joyce about decorations, and her agreeing.
I don’t remember her getting to understand Sarah was worried what they’ll think of her, BECKY did, but Joyce got there after the fact o.o
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2019/comic/book-9-comic/03-sometimes-the-sky-was-so-far-away/decorations/
I could certainly see the last two panels reading as flippant. Also, keep in mind that we can’t necessarily hear tone, but judging by Sarah’s face in the fourth panel, it seems like it’d be reasonable that some confusion or concern at least would be evident in her voice.
But as I said, she’s just retorting to Sarah’s opinion, which Sarah’s shown she can give without showing to care about it.
Is what confuses me. she was never explicitly told (in camera) that Sarah was worried she’ll be judged by other for liking halloween, so… I don’t see how she’s at fault for simply thinking Sarah was trying to tease her for her divided opinions…
She doesn’t need to be explicitly told. She knows Sarah’s crusty persona and how much she pretends not to care or to like anything.
And she’s commented herself earlier in this chapter about how she hates it when people expect her to behave in a certain way and overreact when she changes or reveals something else. Which is spot on for Sarah as well.
Yeah, just going to echo the “doesn’t need to be explicitly told.” I was pointing out ways she might have picked up on it, with just knowing Sarah being the biggest one.
If you want to get ahead of the family of jokes this calls to mind, you might de-sire to a grand pa-rade of them. Could work, Daddi-o.
Aww, no evilly laughing witchy Sarah shrouded in hell fire on the door?
I’m glad she kept the one pumpkin though <3
Can we all agree that the face in the last panel and the face she made with Mary about her burning witch commission (http://www.dumbingofage.com/2019/comic/book-9-comic/03-sometimes-the-sky-was-so-far-away/discretionary/) are the best Sarah faces on DoA to date?
I’m still trying to comprehend how Willis saw evangelion in a deply Christian household. Didn’t the teenage nudity, the dirty jokes, the fact that giant alien eldricth creatures are called angels or that the whole show uses Christian imagery in vain raise any alarms??
I’d go with the “It was animated” reasoning, but it sounds like there were other animated things that weren’t allowed, so I don’t know.
(Side note, I’m not sure how so many people still think “animated”=”must be okay for kids.” That’s probably decreasing now, but there still seem to be some pretty unaware people.)
Eva came out in America on VHS in 1998. I was out of my deeply Christian household.
And you were preparing for Year 0 of the walkyverse.
“I’ll have an everlasting need to visit locations filmed in Short Circuit 2!”
What? Not looking for the remnants of the locations where the initial Police Academy movies were filmed?
Yeah – the buildings were either dozed, converted into condos or had burned down.
I have never seen any of the Police Academy films.
I would respectfully suggest that you do something to remedy that.
Honestly, I disagree, despite having fond memories.
The first two, which are the best by far, aged very badly. The Blue Oyster Club running gag alone…
Oh wow I lost my virginity to one of those
(not intentionally to Police Academy, if my failure to remember which one is any indication)
I rewatched a few of them. Some things are still funny but quite a few jokes also made me whince. Views on a lot of things were a lot different during the 80’s/90’s.
