When I heard this on the radio, the year it came out — and I heard it a lot that summer — I mondegreened “voices carry” to “this is caring.” It was many years before I realized what the song was about. (To quote Hank, if I’d wanted to look it up on the internet, I’d have had to go out and invent the internet. Or rather, invent the web, not yet a gleam in Marc Andreesen’s eye.)
At any rate, my one-time mondegreening seems all too apt in light of the recent Billie/Ruth roughhousing.
Honestly I could see this happening now. And then Lucy brings her new boyfriend back to Foster, because nothing can tank Billie’s popularity like the presence of Walky.
Billie: Hsssst! What are you doing here! I do not know you!
Walky: Actually I’m here with her.
Lucy: uwu
Billie: [implodes]
Well Lucy is cute, (probably) has less baggage than Amber, (probably) less high achieving than Dorothy, (probably) into similar things like Walky and since Walky has now dipped his wick and decided that getting up to frightful sordidness with not completely unpleasant it looks like a good match
Like Dr. Frankenstein, Joey Drew, Pprincess Bubblegum, Andrew Hussie, Charlie Brooker, George R. R. Martin, the Marquis of Sade, Joss Whedon, Lars Von Trier, Justin Roland and Dan Harmon, etc.
I think what Piotr W was thinking of was something more visual, like a relationship graph. I seem to recall that over on Shortpacked!, there was a panel of Robin looking at a relationship graph she had drawn on a chalkboard, and being relieved that it wasn’t a complete graph — and then an unexpected couple formed, completing it, with Consequences.
Ah! I’m not sure what happened with your original post, but I’m guessing you intended to link to the DoA Character Org Chart from Walkypedia. (Could use some updating, but I’m not volunteering.)
neat. and yeah, the wiki could use some updating too. it’s so nicely written, though, I look at it and get scared to add anything, ’cause all I could do atm is fragmented cryptic notes.
huh. apparently a reply with nothing but a url gets eaten by the spambot.
I was linking to the wiki, but I’m not sure this comment will get through if I paste the same link again…
Comments with more than a couple links in them also need manual approval, even if they have other text and are submitted with an approved email address.
A Google Image search for “roller derby logos” pretty quickly turns up a link to the logo displayed here. Either Willis is fleshing out Malaya’s backstory as an Iowa girl (or a CVDD fan), or he just googled and used a cool-looking logo.
I don’t know what that flaming heart logo is. It’s a little too reminiscent of the Lord of Light’s sigil for me.
I think you’re right. The helmet on the door is pretty close to the one worn by Marcie in this strip and the one held by Malaya in the preceding strip.
The heart sticker is the logo for a very real roller derby league in Bloomington! I skated with them for a few years before transferring to another league in Indianapolis! They’re great!
I was wondering myself. Neither she nor Billie seems the type to put something on their door. Have we seen a new roommate assigned to her room? I suppose Joyce might have put something on her idol’s door… but it seems doubtful.
I don’t think anything was on their board previously. Sal’s not really a door decorating person. The only thing that used to be on it was a whiteboard and Billie’s ‘Golden Dragons’ team flag. She took that down when she moved in with Ruth, crumpled it up, and threw it away, and so it’s been blank since Malaya got there. Sal’s only starting decorating her side of the room since Danny got her back into music, so I guess it makes sense Malaya took over the door.
No need. I just checked. It’s in Faz Is Great. Sal started singing again in This is the Way that We Love and by the next storyline, she’s put a picture of a (bass?) guitar up on her wall.
Oooh, look at that, Walky! A remotely located dork you have no previous baggage with where you can start without family drama. Feels awfully tempting, doesn’t it?
I will be REALLY cross if Walky moves on to Lucy without at the very least first talking to Sal and finding out how she feels, and properly ending things with Amber if that’s what he decides he wants to do. However, I am pretty certain I can trust Sal to explain exactly how insulting that would be to all three women, using violence to gst through to him as necessary, even if I’m not convinced Lucy has enough self esteem to dump him over it…
Oh yeah, I remember now! Well, I hope that Lucy hasn’t got her hopes up too high. I think that Walky may have used up his ‘rebound relationship’ quota for now!
What I really want to know is how Walky and Joyce’s argument ended. I’ve got a feeling that they both realised that they didn’t know what Joyce was angry about. So, they just stopped arguing and went their separate ways feeling extremely weirded out.
Here’s a guess: Lucy is going to get all the people from whom she can get more than a one-line dismissal to come to her movie night whilst Billie is off with Ruth.
The Forrest Hall natives will note privately that they know why Billie moved – All of her former dorm-mates are so uncool!
The happy part of me squeed over them making up and taking a step forward based on what Walky meant. The bitter pill part of me notes Walky never actually apologizes – the words ‘I’m sorry’ never come out of his mouth – and that he only says out loud he wants to be a better brother to Billie.
For some reason, it feels like an odd litmus test that apologies only count if they specifically include the words “I’m sorry.” Which is not to deny that Sal makes it easy for him by accepting it before the words come, but I’d argue that when Walky says in the next strip “I haven’t been a good brother,” the very fact of acknowledging that implies “I’m sorry.” And “I want to be a good one to Billie” is as close as these emotionally stunted doofuses (doofi? doofodes?) could get to saying the same about each other. Just like they don’t hug, displacing the desire to do better onto Billie means they don’t have to do feelings directly.
It doesn’t have to be specifically ‘I’m sorry’. Things like ‘I apologize’ work as well. But yeah, I do require actual apologies, not just admissions of what you did wrong. Like, you can’t apologize without an actual apology imo. The two of them being emotionally stunted explains it but it doesn’t actually make it a serviceable apology in my mind.
He had to learn it eventually; spending as much time as he has with Joyce, he must have realised that, as a Troper, she is getting endless opportunities to practice her art!
“You’re sick of the game!” Well, now, that’s a shame.
You’re young and you’re brave and you’re bright.
“You’ve had a raw deal!” I know — but don’t squeal,
Buck up, do your damnedest, and fight.
It’s the plugging away that will win you the day,
So don’t be a piker, old pard!
Just draw on your grit; it’s so easy to quit:
It’s the keeping-your-chin-up that’s hard.
“Hi! I’m Lucy Glenn! You may remember me from such areas as Billie’s dorm room! And this hallway!”
I totally read that in Troy McClure’s (ie, Phil Hartman’s) voice!
sure would’ve been funny if someone’d made a joke about that
Yeah, you guys are slipping.
Now ask for a million dollars.
Or better yet…
How did I know exactly what clip you were going to use..?
I thought the same thing. I love that movie.
Wait, what came of Walky and Joyce talking? How did Walky get out from hiding behind Sarah? I feel like I just missed a month’s worth of comics
Sarah kicked him out
Well, he can’t have pulled another fake rapture. He’s still got his pants.
He threw Sarah on Joyce and left.
This way you get the fun of imagining it.
Nah, Better Call Sal…
Hush hush! Keep it down now! Voices Carry!
He said “Shut up!” He said “Shut Up! Oh God can’t you keep it dow~w~wn!?”
At first I thought it was “This is Scary.”
SUre I do, Esmeralda
figures
Dude tie your shoes before you trip over the laces…
I don’t think Walky has ever had his shoelaces tied in this entire comic so far. At least not that I can remember.
When he was wearing Danny’s shoes.
I’m sure he had his laces tied that one time he tried to hang from them?
I think that’s why it didn’t work. 🙂
Theory accepted.
“It’s a choice!”
“That’s a copy.”
Yay! Let’s be Spider-Friends.
Why have laces when there is Velcro?
Giant woman!
It’s a choice.
Someone who remembers Billie as popular, for Lucy to talk with.
“How did you deal with Billie’s popularity?”
“Usually I pulled her hair. One time I made her eat ants.”
“Great, thanks!”
“Granted, we were six years old at the time, so maybe that’s not relev-hey, where’d she go?”
“Later I mostly hid from her so she wouldn’t stuff me into lockers.”
“I also learned that suggesting a sexual aspect to our relationship REALLY freaks her out. Maybe that would work for you?”
Not surprised she remembers him, given she, uhh, didn’t seem wholly against Billie’s flippant suggestion that Walky hook up with Lucy.
I would like to see imploding Billie, actually. Like, actually imploding 😉
Well Lucy is cute, (probably) has less baggage than Amber, (probably) less high achieving than Dorothy, (probably) into similar things like Walky and since Walky has now dipped his wick and decided that getting up to frightful sordidness with not completely unpleasant it looks like a good match
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ivsb79-h90
I think it’d be a pretty mighty feat if Lucy has more or equal baggage to Amber, but then again, Willis has a way of surprising us.
Well I’m basically assuming she hasn’t but as you say…
If Lucy took her “baggage” to the airport, the X-ray guy will ask to see her in private.
Foreshadowing.
Walky no
Walky is not only aware of Willis, but in communication with Him. He’s like a prophet.
Unfortunately it’s the sort of relationship that ends with Willis turning to camera and saying “Ain’t I a stinker?”
Willis just wants to remind us that humanity is a bunch of jerks… by ironically being a jerk.
And by ironic, you mean flat out ‘ronic.
And like most prophets, Walky has yet to fully understand that his Almighty Creator is a complete jerkbag to his creations.
Like Dr. Frankenstein, Joey Drew, Pprincess Bubblegum, Andrew Hussie, Charlie Brooker, George R. R. Martin, the Marquis of Sade, Joss Whedon, Lars Von Trier, Justin Roland and Dan Harmon, etc.
Lucy missed her cue.
Wait, they know each other?
They briefly met in Billie’s room.
We need some sort of relationship tracker for this comic…

I think what Piotr W was thinking of was something more visual, like a relationship graph. I seem to recall that over on Shortpacked!, there was a panel of Robin looking at a relationship graph she had drawn on a chalkboard, and being relieved that it wasn’t a complete graph — and then an unexpected couple formed, completing it, with Consequences.
The ultimate comics relationship graph so far is a relationship graph of the Doonesbury characters as of 2013.
Ah! I’m not sure what happened with your original post, but I’m guessing you intended to link to the
DoA Character Org Chart from Walkypedia. (Could use some updating, but I’m not volunteering.)

Not if it gets “eaten”, but I think it automatically gets Amin-ed, meaning Willis has to approve the comment. Not sure though.
Comments with more than a couple links in them also need manual approval, even if they have other text and are submitted with an approved email address.
looks like that’s what happened, but normally that gets a “your comment is awaiting moderation” tag, instead of vanishing. o.0
let’s try again: https://walkypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Dumbing_of_Age
“Dude up.” Huh, I’m gonna start using that. XD
I mean, someone else might have said ‘Man up’, but Walky knows his limits.
Walky knows. Quick, hide the booze!
Did Sal actually put something of herself on her door? I can’t tell if that picture of a girl in roller derby clothes is Sal or Malaya.
Probably an illustration of a random derby girl
A Google Image search for “roller derby logos” pretty quickly turns up a link to the logo displayed here. Either Willis is fleshing out Malaya’s backstory as an Iowa girl (or a CVDD fan), or he just googled and used a cool-looking logo.
I don’t know what that flaming heart logo is. It’s a little too reminiscent of the Lord of Light’s sigil for me.
Found it in plain sight! It’s not a flaming heart, but a bleeding heart, the logo of the Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby of Bloomington, Indiana.
Still no idea what the blue helmet on the right is from.
Maybe it’s their fictional league’s logo? It has the right color scheme.
Oh, wait. Malaya! Duh!
Looks like both “no she did not” and “Malaya erased Sal’s name while putting hers on the whiteboard, if Sal’s name was on there in the first place”
So guess who saw this on twitter and did a spit take with a carrot?
My computer screen is displeased about the carrot.
I’d missed that she’d actually added decorations recently. I’ll have to trawl back through the archives and see when that happened.
No need. I just checked. It’s in Faz Is Great. Sal started singing again in This is the Way that We Love and by the next storyline, she’s put a picture of a (bass?) guitar up on her wall.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2018/comic/book-8/03-faz-is-great/normalize/
And here we see she’s added a couple more: http://www.dumbingofage.com/2018/comic/book-9-comic/02-but-the-sun-still-shines/endthings/
LOOK LOOK YOURE ON TWITTER!!!
I SAW.
My computer is very upset with this development because it got carrot pieces all over it. 😛
Get it, Lucy
It’s been a dream ship for me for a long while.
Walky, you coward! Well, you have been a coward since your creation, to the point of being like Rincewind from Discworld.
Rincewind has a LOT of practice running away! i’d say he’s a wizzard at it!
“I don’t remember you, and stop calling me Lucy.”
Goddammit, Walky.
Oooh, look at that, Walky! A remotely located dork you have no previous baggage with where you can start without family drama. Feels awfully tempting, doesn’t it?
Walky probably has a new appreciation for how “remotely located” could be a tempting quality…
walky somehow remembered his life is a vaudeville comedy
I will be REALLY cross if Walky moves on to Lucy without at the very least first talking to Sal and finding out how she feels, and properly ending things with Amber if that’s what he decides he wants to do. However, I am pretty certain I can trust Sal to explain exactly how insulting that would be to all three women, using violence to gst through to him as necessary, even if I’m not convinced Lucy has enough self esteem to dump him over it…
I don’t think the personalities match
Walky, she was talking to Carla! You can’t blame Lucy for missing her cue!
Heeeeeeey wasn’t Lucy kinda crushing on Walky last time ?
Such a ladies’ man.
You know, I managed to completely miss that! Do you remember the strip name?
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2018/comic/book-9-comic/01-flyin-to-the-red/telecom/ She’s in the four or so comics after this one.
Oh yeah, I remember now! Well, I hope that Lucy hasn’t got her hopes up too high. I think that Walky may have used up his ‘rebound relationship’ quota for now!
Rebounding like a pool ball. 🙂
What may be a crush blush shows here.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2018/comic/book-9-comic/01-flyin-to-the-red/nut/
It’s hard to tell because of how comics work, but Walky was there for two hours waiting for a ‘sudden interruption’…
What I really want to know is how Walky and Joyce’s argument ended. I’ve got a feeling that they both realised that they didn’t know what Joyce was angry about. So, they just stopped arguing and went their separate ways feeling extremely weirded out.
I assume Walky just faked Rapture again and snaked out.
Nope. He still has all his clothes on.
PRAISE JESUS, GIVER OF PANTS!
So is the mouseover text a 30 Rock reference?
Gotta be, and a fairly obscure one
Here’s a guess: Lucy is going to get all the people from whom she can get more than a one-line dismissal to come to her movie night whilst Billie is off with Ruth.
The Forrest Hall natives will note privately that they know why Billie moved – All of her former dorm-mates are so uncool!
*Cough* c-can’t relate to Walky’s procrastinating at all. N-nope!
Heh, suddenly I think we have an answer to why Walky tried to hide from Joyce in JOYCE’S room – to be given a handy distraction.
Whoa, Lucy already knows Walky?! Wonders never cease in this small fictional world.
We saw it happen.
Dammit! What happened with the poking stick?
Walky, you get your ass in there and you talk to your sister! I NEED to see how this goes down.
Something like this, I presume
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2014/comic/book-4/04-the-whiteboard-dong-bandit/pology/
GAH I have so many mixed feelings about that encounter.
Eh, they kinda sorta not really hug in the next strip. That’s a HUGE step forward for them.
The happy part of me squeed over them making up and taking a step forward based on what Walky meant. The bitter pill part of me notes Walky never actually apologizes – the words ‘I’m sorry’ never come out of his mouth – and that he only says out loud he wants to be a better brother to Billie.
Yeah, mixed feelings are fun.
Has Walky exhibited genre savviness before?
He had to learn it eventually; spending as much time as he has with Joyce, he must have realised that, as a Troper, she is getting endless opportunities to practice her art!
He has his moments
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2013/comic/book-3/02-guess-whos-coming-to-galassos/freshstart/
Robert Service could have written this for Walky:
Hello Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby!!!!!!!!! https://www.facebook.com/bleedingheartland/
oof ouch owie my bones
