Joyce’s blindness fades and she sees Sarah sleeping soundly, a faint smile tugging up the corners of her mouth. Between Joyce and Sarah’s bed, on the floor, Joyce spies the charred one-eyed remnant of Dina’s hat, three bright vermillion strands of hair, two small piles of teeth, and a handful of freckles.
Seriously, Sarah’s only chance of getting through the day without Joyce-inflicted trauma would have been to sneak up in the middle of the night and hide in the basement for the rest of the day.
