Walky is last because while he was initially loathe to admit when he liked a girl, it got resolved fairly quickly and he makes no efforts to hide it now.
Billie and Ruth managed to be all “I-it’s not like I like you or anything” to each other even after they started sleeping together, which is impressive.
I rank Sarah between them because her mild misanthropy is more severe than Billie’s “I’m too cool to be your friend, but I will anyway”, but not nearly as bad as Ruth’s “I will threaten genuine violence rather than admit I care”.
Mostly agree with the ordering, Sarah should be higher on the list because she seems more self-loathing and feels she doesn’t deserve close friends where Ruth can at least accept when they come around.
I would classify Billie’s tsundere as being more like “I’m WAY too cool to like you, but by a strange (and annoying) coincidence, you always happen to be going where I want to go, so I’m always around you, so PLEASE stop following me because it’s making me really confused!”
I read Sarah as a genuinely social and caring person who was forced to abandon much of her social side due to college workload and has tried to abandon her caring side because of the shit show last year. It is still just a facade though.
I suspect that the Doc is suggestion that maybe the app will point Dina towards sporting small-talk. The reference seems to be about Arsenal FC, top-tier English and European soccer club.
Yes, it is indeed a reference to Arsenal FC. They were so named because the original football team was made up of workers from the Royal Arsenal munitions factory at Woolwich* (they were originally called Woolwich Arsenal before the war)
Danny has stormed off to find somewhere quiet to mourn and sulk. Meanwhile, Ethan (being Ethan) is going to stay in the lounge area, fretting about Amber and dithering about what (if anything) he should do. He will stay in this indecision loop until Mike mocks him into taking some manner of action by sarcastically and bitterly suggesting that Amber is better off staying miserable rather than relying on a loser like Ethan to help her see sense.
Honestly I would not be disappointed if we never saw Mike again. He exists pretty much solely as a source of “jokes” or as a means to force the plot to move forwards when it gets stuck because of existing characterizations.
It’s in reference to a comment thread I think two days ago, where someone suggested that Danny was becoming another Mike, and wondered if Mike would appreciate a fellow jerkass or would screw with Danny. I then basically described Mike recruiting Danny in a Sith-like way, then commented about wanting to draw them as Sith but not having the skill. Mike is the master, Danny the apprentice. In a way I’m comparing Danny’s increasing cynicism, depression, and angst to him falling to the dark side of the force.
I think that an underdone piece of toast would make a better Anakin than Hayden Christensen, but to be fair to him there’s reason to think the problem was mostly in the writing and direction.
Wait. Am I actually recognized as someone who comments regularly, or semi-regularly at least? This makes me incredibly happy!… Which from my experience can only mean tomorrow is gonna suck.
So chickens or other closely related birds instead? I’d personally like to nominate Turkeys to be the genetic base we use for our new raptors, because those things are surprisingly vicious.
Nah, Hollywood will americanize it. “Dina Saur knows Dinosaurs” or something. As soon as the song ends she says “It’s Deena Saruyama, and I’m here to talk about all Mesozoic animals.” This happens every time, and it’s immediately turned into a meme.
I can kind of relate to dina here. I am always worried that I will make someone hate me but at the same time i want to try to invest time into becomeing connected.
Manipulative would suggest she’s being underhanded instead of completely forthright in what she’s expecting from her friendship with Sarah. There’d need to be some level of deception going on or ulterior motives that aren’t stated outright, so I don’t think manipulative is the word you’re looking for.
“Do not betray my investment in you” god that right there would piss me the hell off, however right she may be acting like she is all knowing and that she knows me better than I know myself I would tell to fuck the fuck off.
Remember that this is Dina; she isn’t so good at social interaction and tends to prize clarity over tact. In order to understand what she means, you have to realise that she says precisely what she’s thinking without any consideration to her listener’s ego or self-image.
Sarah kind of likes this characteristic about Dina but, at other times, it drives her to distraction. Dina’s closing line in this strip reminds us that Dina needs Sarah to tell her this as she wouldn’t guess it otherwise!
And then she would respect your wishes, without judgment, and you would lose a friend. But as long as you know exactly what you want and never need to look at yourself through someone else’s eyes I guess.
And we should remember Dina knows this, and takes that possible outcome into account before she speaks. It’s not like being told to fuck of is a new experience to her. She’s willing to risk this rare friendship to maintain its honesty because she finds it more valuable than navigating the labyrinth of politenesses and ego-stroking of your common, shallow social relationships. If you don’t want that, well, I’d have to say it’s your loss.
I don’t know whether to go “aaawww” over how heart warming this is, or “OOOOHHH” at how quickly Dina just verbally tore down all of Sarah’s walls. These two are quickly developing a great dynamic, and Dina is getting a lot of snark practice in.
Is this…is this an Evangelion reference? Cause these statements are very bewildering, and that is the only possible source I can think of with this kind of terminology being thrown around.
Dina was up to now content with her life in the blissfully static world of dinosaur facts. But now when she knows what it is to share hopes and dreams and everythings and nothings with another – and that person isn’t there – she truly knows what it is to be lonely.
Content is not automatically equivalent to ‘happy’. I don’t think that Dina really understood the potential of happiness before she met Becky and I suspect that she wants to see if its alchemy works for other people she knows.
Between Dina being forthright because that’s how she faces life so it’s how she interacts with people: and Sarah’s carefully constructed walls against interacting with people because that’s how she choses not to interact with people…these two have a great dynamic.
WHAT No I was hoping for Ethan/Danny convo (& maybe kisses) instead.
Not that I don’t love Dina – she’s one of my favorite characters, and the way she just shot down Sarah without even intentionally doing it is one of my favorite things ever, BUT STILL.
I am still chuckling at that comment that went something like “We’re only fetishizing these 2 dudes because we want to see them bang as quickly as possible.”
“Damn it, Dina! How am I supposed to maintain my reputation for misanthropy when you keep asking these questions that make me admit things about myself that I prefer not to acknowledge? You’re forcing me to be a good person and like you! I don’t want to be a good person or to like anyone!!!“
Hey everyone, im kind of confused by the comments on danny: when was it
Shown or suggested that he’s a parental abuse victim, or at the least his parents constantly undermining him? It seems a given reading the comments but it was a surprise for me! (I only read DoA so far, is it mentioned in the other series?)
What’s truly great about this dynamic is that the very /reason/ Sarah is so good at keeping people away is the exact reason her technique doesn’t work on Dina. Her walls and strategies are incredibly effective in a framework of typical social rules and norms. Guess who doesn’t fit that framework? Dina.
(To a lesser extent this may be something that contributed to Joyce and Sarah’s friendship as well.)
Sarah’s finally found someone she can’t drive away. It will be interesting to see how this plays out…
Nah. She totally likes the company. This isn’t my Brotp, but I’ll accept it
She can drive away Dina. All she would have to do is ask.
Which is why she won’t. She secretly likes the company.
So Sarah is tsundere? Sure, that makes perfect sense actually.
I believe the DoA Tsundere scale goes:
Ruth -> Sarah -> Billie -> Walky
Dina has the power of SCIENCE on her side.
I read Sarah as a genuinely social and caring person who was forced to abandon much of her social side due to college workload and has tried to abandon her caring side because of the shit show last year. It is still just a facade though.
It will probably be intensely frustrating for Sarah but, who knows? This may be key to bringing down her self-imposed walls!
Dina is pretty blunt uh.
Dina’s getting pretty good at the people-reading thing.
I like to think she’s getting conversational tips from an app on her phone.
Dina: The trouble with Arsenal is they always try to walk it in.
Sarah: …What?
Dina: Sorry, wrong app.
Indeed, I did catch that ludicrous display last night.
Props for the Arsenal reference. 😛
See, I actually have no idea who that is. That’s kind of the point of the bit, I don’t need to! 🙂
Is it a GI Joe? One with a propensity for walking?
I suspect that the Doc is suggestion that maybe the app will point Dina towards sporting small-talk. The reference seems to be about Arsenal FC, top-tier English and European soccer club.
Yes, it is indeed a reference to Arsenal FC. They were so named because the original football team was made up of workers from the Royal Arsenal munitions factory at Woolwich* (they were originally called Woolwich Arsenal before the war)
*(pronounced Wool-itch)
(The moar you know) 😛
I think that she was always good at it; she just lacked the confidence to go with her hypotheses and act on them.
Wait what happened to Ethan and Danny?? DON’T LEAVE US HERE
The exciting conclusion
He’ll be back. He’s in one of the preview panels on the Dumblr.
in shortpacked he develops though.
I mean he was still a jerkass but he was a jerkass who cared
in certain circumstances.
Especially for his wife and daughter; they are pretty much the centre of his world for which he’d do just about anything.
BFF’s 4Ever!
D’ohh, these two get along so well.
Hey Rukduk I have a present for you 🙂
http://chickenforyou.tumblr.com/image/144079652717
Sith Danny and Mike? Mike fits in the role, but I’m not sure if Danny.
I imagined this in a more “Darth Sidious-Anakin” fashion
Is it weird that I now think that Danny would make a better Anakin than Hayden Christensen?
I think that an underdone piece of toast would make a better Anakin than Hayden Christensen, but to be fair to him there’s reason to think the problem was mostly in the writing and direction.
Yes!! That is awesome! Much appreciated!
Wait. Am I actually recognized as someone who comments regularly, or semi-regularly at least? This makes me incredibly happy!… Which from my experience can only mean tomorrow is gonna suck.
I love this 😀
Where is your Yotome now!? Chrisherself where is your Yotome now!?
*Yotomoe
I called upon a false god and I prostrate myself before thee
My adoration of Dina knows no bounds.
Be careful, Dina, or you might get ‘Jurass-kicked!
*dodges feathered raptors*
Oh, who am I kidding?
Sarah could never allow herself to do that.
And she knows it.
I fricken love these two together.
Yes.
Dina is minoring is Psychology.
Paleopsych sounds intriguing, but how to apply it?
Using it to spot the clever girls
*polite applause*
According to my shiny new DoA collection PDF, Dina is a biology major. I was certain that she’d have chosen palaeontology.
She wants to bring them back, of course. And do it right, without the frog DNA
So chickens or other closely related birds instead? I’d personally like to nominate Turkeys to be the genetic base we use for our new raptors, because those things are surprisingly vicious.
Seconded. My experience with geese says they’re decent candidates, too.
DINA DINA DINA
I could see her running a Bill Nye type show some day, but “Dina Saruyama the Dinosaur Girl” doesn’t really scan as a theme song.
Sure it scans, just not to the “Science Guy” theme.
Nah, Hollywood will americanize it. “Dina Saur knows Dinosaurs” or something. As soon as the song ends she says “It’s Deena Saruyama, and I’m here to talk about all Mesozoic animals.” This happens every time, and it’s immediately turned into a meme.
I would watch that show.
I can dig it.
Come on, Sarah. Dina needs a little company. 😛
So does Sarah but she won’t quite admit it.
It’s the new Odd Couple!
One’s really grumpy, one doesn’t know how to take a hint… No one remembers to buy milk, the labels get mixed up…
Unlike Amazigirl, Dina really is immune to all criticism.
That explains why Amber/AG is losing it, because when Dina wore the AG suit, it passed its power onto her.
She is not sure if it really IS criticism, so she double checks, which in turn disarm the criticism if it ever was there to begin with.
Psychoanalysis for everyone!
Dina’s the counselor everyone needs.
correct me if I am wrong but… Dr. Grey from Red Vs Blue reference?
Well you’re not wrong, so try this one:
“He wants this sword? I’ll give it to him… BLADE FIRST!”
YES!!! Although, she did pluralize ‘psychoanalyses’ correctly…
Interesting…Sarah being Joyce dependent is a switch I am sure I am willing to throw.
Dina is just the friggin best
As long as we’re jumping back and forth between characters, let’s see how Carla’s project is coming along.
Maybe Dina can hook Sarah up with Jacob.
If this is what it’s like with everybody she likes then a relationship with her must be fucking crazy.
I can kind of relate to dina here. I am always worried that I will make someone hate me but at the same time i want to try to invest time into becomeing connected.
Not sure if Dina is being manipulative, or just what in this comic.
Manipulative would suggest she’s being underhanded instead of completely forthright in what she’s expecting from her friendship with Sarah. There’d need to be some level of deception going on or ulterior motives that aren’t stated outright, so I don’t think manipulative is the word you’re looking for.

Man I love that movie. So good. So quotable.
Why is Sarah under a blanket? It’s pretty hot out tonight.
October can get cold in Indiana.
Doesn’t it depend on what time of the year it is in DoA?
Trying to give Dina a hint?
I think it’s still autumn in DoA.
LOL give it up Joe, you’re never gonna harness that crazy angry energy!
“Do not betray my investment in you” god that right there would piss me the hell off, however right she may be acting like she is all knowing and that she knows me better than I know myself I would tell to fuck the fuck off.
I read it in Clancy Brown’s voice, it’s just kind of the thing Luthor would say, you know?
Remember that this is Dina; she isn’t so good at social interaction and tends to prize clarity over tact. In order to understand what she means, you have to realise that she says precisely what she’s thinking without any consideration to her listener’s ego or self-image.
Sarah kind of likes this characteristic about Dina but, at other times, it drives her to distraction. Dina’s closing line in this strip reminds us that Dina needs Sarah to tell her this as she wouldn’t guess it otherwise!
Sarah and Dina definitely benefit from each others’ temperaments.
Dina is a walking Lance of Longinus, Sarah’s AT field had no chance.
So if Dina initiated Third Impact, would that mean we’d get dinosaurs back? Cuz I’d be totally cool with that.
Is this…is this an Evangelion reference? Cause these statements are very bewildering, and that is the only possible source I can think of with this kind of terminology being thrown around.
It is indeed ^_^
ZANKOKU NA TENSHI NO YOUNE
DINAAA NO SHINWA NI NARE
I see that it’s REALLY BRIGHT OUT, so we’re still well in afternoon.
Eternal Saturday is Eternal.
I thought 3AM was eternal.

Dina was up to now content with her life in the blissfully static world of dinosaur facts. But now when she knows what it is to share hopes and dreams and everythings and nothings with another – and that person isn’t there – she truly knows what it is to be lonely.
In other words – dooooofuuuuuus 🙂
basically sums up 10th grade for me. fortunatly i found the sarah to my dina pretty early on, it would just take a few more years to realize it
Content is not automatically equivalent to ‘happy’. I don’t think that Dina really understood the potential of happiness before she met Becky and I suspect that she wants to see if its alchemy works for other people she knows.

That is one hell of a cliffhanger.
Kinda unrelated but I love how across the board the EthanXDanny shippers have been. Ranging from
it would be nice if the smooched, but only if Amber is comfortable…
to
FUCK HIM DANNY FUCK HIM HARD!!!!!!!
I am still chuckling at that comment that went something like “We’re only fetishizing these 2 dudes because we want to see them bang as quickly as possible.”
Well it’s honest
Oh for sure, that’s why it was hilarious ^_^
I can’t complain though, I pretty much just stop short of shipping the commenters
PlasmaXAna 4ever
Just because she hates the assessments, it doesn’t mean that they are wrong.
where the hell is ana chronistic
seriously
The FBI made a statement today stating they don’t know who this Ana is, but that she’s probably okay and too please stop calling them.
What about Sue and Jen, the Aside sisters?
Better than their brother, Hom.
…And now I finally get the pun in the names. Wow, I’m oblivious… Thanks >.< 😛
Happy yesterday Mother’s Day!
Let’s take a brief moment to appreciate the mothers of Dumbing of Age
Like Joyce’s mom! Wait shit okay how about Sal and Walky’s mom? Uhhh noooo. Danny’s mom? Nope, Ethan’s mom? FUCK!
Dorothy’s mom! She’s a good person! Happy Mother’s Day Dorothy’s mom…there isn’t a lot of competition.
What about Dina’s mom?
She is also good
What about Mike’s mom? From his perspective he probably considers her horrible.
No, she’s a wonderful person, and he hates that.
She has no sense of personal space or that don’t touch me means don’t fucking touch me.
Amber’s mom seems pretty okay.
These two interacting makes me happy 🙂
“Damn it, Dina! How am I supposed to maintain my reputation for misanthropy when you keep asking these questions that make me admit things about myself that I prefer not to acknowledge? You’re forcing me to be a good person and like you! I don’t want to be a good person or to like anyone!!!“
I wish I had a friend exactly like Dina, and at the same time, I can relate to Dina in these kind of situations.
We all do.
I mean, except those who don’t. They’re probably neurotypical weirdos.
It’s made plain during Freshmen family weekend, because of what his parents expect of him and how they value him.
Dina for my birthday, me likey :3
All data is valuable.
Joyce and Becky leaves,
And this whole CAST HAVE LOST tHEIR MINDS
hahaha. i want to write fanfiction of these two now. the uncomfortable honesty hour.
Stupid, STUPID truth.
It’s SO STUPID how true it is.
Sarah probably thought that friends were electric
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0WNbm1jz6A

(To a lesser extent this may be something that contributed to Joyce and Sarah’s friendship as well.)
Wait – no – I mean, on the one hand, more Dina, which is always great, on the other hand GET BACK TO ETHAN
dang, dina destroyed sarah’s tsundere with her kuudere.
in other news i am ashamed for myself for knowing at least twice as much anime clichés as a supposedly typical non anime fan 😛
