Next weekend, y’all!: SPX! Maryland! North Bethesda! Table W32! (That’s against the wall on the… right-hand side as you enter, I believe? I’m neighbor to Danielle Corsetto and Magnolia Porter.)
I will bring books, posters, some prints, and my ability to draw sketches for you. I will have the tiniest number of Dumbing of Age Book 2s there for purchase, which I have had shipped quick-like for way too much money to be here early for this event. (The rest of the books will likely get to me back home a week later.)
Oh, Roz.
slutmonger…
Slutmonger… Does that mean she mongers sluts? what the hell is even monger?
*looks it up*
1. denoting a dealer or trader in a specified commodity.
So Roz trades in slut? is she a pimp?
I’ve heard it used to mean somebody who spreads something in the more general sense.
Like Warmonger being somebody who strongly and actively encourages war withing their community.
So Roz could be somebody who strongly encourages slut within her community. This likely refers to Roz’s practice of wearing a condom hat and spreading the good word about safe sex.
it’s odd to see a robin who’s actually bothered about her position as a senator (and seems to want a good relationship with roz) rather than the ever-quirky “this is my side job” version from shortpacked.
also, love robin’s epxression in pannel 2
now all we need is a leslie somewhere…
and this was not meant to be a reply…
duh doy
Isn’t Robin only in congress?
Congress included both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
I’m not sure whether she’s a Senator or a Representstive in DoA, though. I’m pretty sure she was a Representative in Shortpacked!.
She’s a Representative. An earlier strip showed her House district.
She’s not old enough to be a senator, and was only just old enough to be a representative when she ran.
Never gonna give you up.
Never gonna let you down.
Oh good, because this storyline wasn’t rife with emotional trainwreck moments already.
Suddenly the stadium is closed because a train runs through it and we’re all spared personal emotional disaster at the cost of a cheap laugh track.
*canned laughter*
*audience applauses*
*cut to commercial*
We’ll be back with part two of The Big Bang Theory…
Whenever people say the Big Bang Theory isn’t funny I feel obligated to defend it, but mocking the amount of canned laughter is hitting the nail right on the head. It does that terrible American comedy thing of opening the can for not just the punchline but also every line of the setup, which ruins all sense of comedic timing on top of just being stupid.
If they removed the laughter you’d get the correct timing back and you’d probably make each episode 5 minutes shorter, making each one quite fast moving.
The thing that bugs me most about it — and most other recent comedies that use it — isn’t just the abundance of canned laughter, but the fact that it’s always the three same tracks. I read something about canned laughter once, that there used to be all sorts of different kinds of laughter, from small chuckles to personalities, like “the guy with the unusually loud laugh” and “the girl who gets it before everyone else” and “the woman trying not to laugh” interspersed with the rest of the stuff. It’s still not good to use, but mixing it up a bit might make it slightly less than absolutely awful.
Although, apparently The Big Bang Theory runs before a live studio audience? I’m not sure I believe that, though. They must at least remix the laughter, adding in more in the post-production, or prompt the audience. No one laughs that much.
The Laughter is live.
You can see that in some Footage from the Crew (like videos from the actors, making of’s and of course the Flash Mob Video).
Chuck Lorre explained, that audience laughs, when they are amused, there is no mixing and no order to laugh.
No, there’s an audience, but anyone can hear there’s more sweetening than in diet soda.
That’s not true. As it turns out, live audiences can laugh a lot. And loudly, and annoyingly. That’s just the way the world is. Sometimes, reality is unrealistic. Sitcoms that do use canned laughter, like How I Met Your Mother, are often a lot more subtle, to avoid the very complaints made here.
That’s where I’m *somewhat* lucky to be partially deaf. I can’t hear the laugh-track and it doesn’t show up on the captions.
Except that Big Bang theory is actually filmed in front of an audience, which they frequently tell to simmer down. A lot of ground breaking shows have been filmed in front of a live audience(such as “All in the Family”, which is where the “different types of laughs” come from.
I like trains.
I like turtles
I likke cake.
I like chocolate milk.
Hello.
what are you talking about? politics NEVER change people!
They only change animals, plants, and elements.
Used to be all Hydrogen had a neutron. THANKS OBAMA.
From a continental standpoint, I consider it appropriate that U.S. hydrogen has been finally stopped from shamelessly enriching itself.
But hydrogen is already the poorest element, with only one proton! It’s the element most in need of enrichment, while the heavier elements benefiting at the cost of hydrogen are already enriched enough!
OCCUPY PERIODIC TABLE!
They are the celebratoriest backgrounds! ALL THE PUBLICLY-SANCTIONED VIOLENCE
Although we only get to see two of them thanks to the close-up in panels 2 & 4.
Should add “yes, they are good”, but they usually are.
“Slutmonger”? Wow, Robin.
Good job on the backgrounds, Willis!
One of Iron Man’s more controversial villains.
He had a suit made out of scantily clad women. (This was around the time people stopped caring about the Comics Code. XD)
That kinda sounds like Tony Stark’s kryptonite.
Or something he’d invent for himself when drunk.
The power of the boobies. My only weakness (ok, butts too)!
The power of the boobies is nothing compared to the power of Sha-Boobies!

Perfect Gravatar.
I concur. (Plus, perfect gravatar)
I keep reading Comics Code as Konami Code and being very, very confused.
She wanted to be known as The Cockgobbler but that name was copyrighted already.
One of Marvel’s lesser known heroes, eh?
And one of the most terrifying.
Actually a turkey-themed villain. Teamed up with the Teabagger to fight Spider-Man from Admonishing Spider-Man #4.2 until Marvel figured out what their names meant.
Sister Bonding the Politically Correct Way!
Sister-on-sister time…. Ain’t it great?
Robinnnnnnnnnnnn
Oh man, I didn’t even see this coming.
Willis, this is perhaps the biggest, baddest setup I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait for the fireworks.
Does robin even like football?
Well she’s of hispanic heritage so she probably likes FUTBALL.
that’s racist.
Everyone likes FUTBAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLL. Football isn’t as popular, though.
It doesn’t matter whether or not Robin likes football. What matters is whether or not she stands to be perceived by her constituency as being more relatable and thus more popular and more likely to be elected if she is SEEN as liking football.
This is all going to end in an ethics investigation isn’t it?
Probably, most likely
*Enter Bane*
Bane. Blaine. Hmm.
*singing the Bane freestyle rap*
PEOPLE OF BLOOMINGTON, TAKE BACK YOUR CITY! You guys from Purdue, you can just go home.
BOUT TIME I SAW MY FAVORATE DESANTO.
I would have never taken you to be a Roz fan.
I will slam you.
and not in a good Las Vegas way.
KE KE KE!
Dang Koreans, with their zergling rushes!
Hello? Robin its the 1920’s they want there words back.
Note slutmonger is not a 1920’s word at least i don’t think it is.
I kind of figured you were referring to “captains of industry”. I think they’re better known as the Capitalist class today…
I refuse to believe said captains of industry aren’t wearing suits and top hats, don’t have handlebar mustaches, and don’t say anything in a way that makes it seem like they’re already planning your death.
More Robin? YES PLEASE
YAY ROBIN!!! Now all we need s Leslie.
Yes. This. More of this.
Now tell me Leslie is just around the corner…
I was just about to say that.
Some Leslie-Robin time, please!
*evil Smile*
Da Doy??
I see that Robin knows the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition, in this case “Exploitation begins at home”.
omigosh, happy birthday, doa!
also hi robin what’s up with you
ROBIN! I’d almost forgotten about her! I think it has literally been years since she was in DoA.
Roz’s last line makes me wonder if she and her sister used to be a lot closer politically but after Robin began running she moved right to get elected?
I believe it was implied in her previous appearance that she mostly stays to the right to stay in office.
Late to the party, so apologies in advance if this has been answered before, but is there a place with FAQs about the strip/artist or a place where one can post and ask questions directly of Willis? For example, I’m curious to know why he titled the strip “Dumbing of Age”, and why he set it in Bloomington when he is actually from OSU country.
You caould try asking him on his tumblr if you like
itswalky.tumblr.com/ask
Also, there’s an FAQ link up at the top of the page, though I don’t believe either of those questions are there.
Also Part II: The Alsoing, I thought he did go to Indiana, at least originally?
He attended Indiana University in the late 1990’s. His very first strip, “Roomies”, began in the IU school newspaper.
He lives in Ohio now. He grew up in Indiana.
“Coming of age” is a common phrase, this is a pun on it, emphasizing that college kids can act plenty dumb at times.
I think we have yet to see a functional family unit.
Dorothy’s seem alright. Also we at least haven’t seen anything BAD about Amber’s mom (despite hooking up with Joe’s dad), or Sierra or Dina’s parents.
Though those could all be due to limited screen time thus far.
Dorothy and Sierra’s parents seem the best of the bunch.
Dina’s seem well meaning, but you could argue that the inaction of people anxious not to cause a fuss, like Dina’s parent’s is often what allows creeps like Blaine to get away with it. And even though Sierra’s parents seem more together, they apparently didn’t contact campus police either. But I’d probably be as bad as Dina’s parents in a similar situation, so who am I to talk.
Mike’s parents are pretty cool, too.
I don’t think any family containing Mike counts as a functional family unit.
Got me there.
Yeah, but the Warner family unit would include Mike, so ‘functional’ may not apply.
I doobt the we will ever see one.
Okay, so we’re seeing Robin but still not any parents?
(I’m curious to see more of their family, but I realize after Ethan’s that this is probably a very very bad idea. I remember the dad’s a jerk.)
I noticed that there are proportionally more jerk dads than jerk moms in the Walkyverse. I like that the Dumbiverse is taking pains to even the playing field.
Now we just have everyone as jerks.
Yay, drama! 😀
Congratulations on 3rd Birthday. Thx. for the nifty background artwork, very nice.
Bill, I don’t know for sure but seems to be:
Dumbing of Age > Coming of Age ?
It looks like there are about forty people in Memorial Stadium. Yup, that’s about right.
Looks like Roz is not ready for some Football.
Any thing you say can be used TO GET YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL
“Total slutmonger”
XD XD XD
I really enjoy Roz and her dynamic with the smary/successful Robin here. Hopefully we get to see more of their relationship without it being overshadowed by romantic drama.
Though I do love some Leslie Bean.
Roz, please, contain your excitement. You’re scaring the little children.
I guess it’s possible that this is on purpose, but for me, the top of your page, the title and the actual comic, loads SOOOOOO SLOOOOOWWly. The bottom parts with the blurb and the comments, etc – basically everything below and including the nav buttons – those pop up right away. But the actual thing I want to see, the comic (and the title image) – that takes literally 55-130 seconds to load. I counted. I’ve experienced this on multiple devices on multiple different networks on multiple days since I first discovered this comic 6-7 weeks ago. Mebbe it’s just me. Or, like I said, mebbe it’s some script and it’s on purpose. So, there you go. F to the WIW.
The first panel: “Look, Roz. Everything the light touches is our kingdom.”
That’s a terrible thing to tell Roz. Getting her hopes up about all the buff, sweaty football players and all the people in the audience like that.
Slutmonger…wouldn’t that be a pimp? A monger is another word for a person who sells something, right? So wouldn’t a slutmonger be someone who sells sluts? Geez Robin, learn your vocabulary. She doesn’t sell sluts, she- nevermind.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/monger:
Definition 2: a person who attempts to stir up or spread something that is usually petty or discreditable
You don’t have to make a profit; just promoting it is sufficient.
I like how the relationship dynamic is the exact opposite of the other universe.
I… didn’t see this strip coming O_O
The Blaine storyline ended, so another had to be added to maintain critical mass.
Howard and Roz will ship
If by that you he will loose his virginity to roz. Then yes i can get behind that.
It’s going to be the only sex Roz regrets.
For the record, I ship them too.
Ten bucks says Billie and Ruth get caught on the Jumbotron later
Jeez, where does a university even get the money to build something like that? I think I suddenly see why you guys’ tuition fees are so superamazingly high…
Actually most of a College Stadium fundrasing for building or renivations comes from Boosters, former players and taxes.
Heck Trent Green put up most of the 3.5 million in the 2003 renovation on Indana’s MS.
Also why there are so many memoral Stadiums is because most broke ground in the 1920 to honor the dead of WWI
First off, yay Robin!
Second, three years of DoA?! Woo!
I can’t tell if the alt-text is being sarcastic.
Is that sarcasm?
I love how their body language and relationship is exactly switched between universes.
Walkyverse: Roz is super excited around Robin while using her for her own purposes (a free place to bunk), while Robin is all slumped-shoulders and barely-contained resentment.
Dumbingverse: Robin is super excited around Roz while using her for her own purposes (maintaining a family-friendly appearance for her career), while Roz is all slumped shoulders and barely-contained resentment.
How did she become such a sell-out?
Tea Party ticket.
I know why Robin is in the indoor seats: It’s Indiana Hoosiers football; she wouldn’t be caught dead watching that junk (apologies to Hoosiers alumni, but you know I’m right ;).
Roz’s face needs to be a gravatar.
Robin and Leslie, Billie and Ruth, when is Daisy going to get her own lesbian.
Don’t forget Grace and Mandy!
Oh right. Hmm Daisy’s never getting laid is she?
Happy 3rd b-day, DOA! Loved the ride so far, can’t wait to see where it goes next. And great job on the backgrounds!
Woo! Robin! 😀
3 years of darn comics. HURRAY!!!
(;,;)
So is Robin closer to the age you would expect a US senator to be in this universe?
She’s not a senator. (Nor was she in Shortpacked!) She’s a representative. Age requirement is 25.
Don’t worry Roz, I get the feeling she can’t change. Even if she tried.
What I love is… I actually live here, and I found shortpacked n’ dumbing of age by accident. But… they should all be fans of basketball. This is IU, not Butler. 😀
I miss the old Robin… 🙁
