Eh…no. I am certainly not a spambot. It’s just I went from a mental image of Yuri Paradise (Joyce x Amber) to imagining Joe in the middle in various states of undress. Not being a person who particularly wants to see Joe nude, you see where “no” came from.
Wellllllllll Joyce didn’t exactly fight going to the party. I think it would be fair to say she went there of her own free will. She thought it would be fun, and aside from Ryan, it was!
Hopefully she comes away from this thinking “Alright, be more careful next time, but I am still Queen of the Drunks!”
You mean, aside from: being drugged and nearly raped by someone she instinctively trusted, having to glass him in the face to protect herself… then facing the possibility of losing her freedom and all of her new friends, while half-drugged and thus totally unable to cope? And she’ll wake up not remembering half this stuff, freaking out about the memory loss and having to hear it from her friends.
Not only is this a full-on traumatic experience, it’s the first house party she ever went to, right? If she ever does go to a house party again, I imagine she’ll be so on her guard there’s no way she’ll open up so much. After all, even at this one, it was teaming up with Ryan that gave her the confidence to get people together and not just hang out in a corner.
I’m sure it would be harder for her. But at the same time, I’m sure that Billie and Dorothy would stick by her if they go to another party. Dorothy especially, considering today’s comic.
Considering that it’s Joyce we’re talking about, I think she’d be (at least to some extent) reassured that she was saved. She may be sheltered, but just based on how she acts, I very much doubt this will break her. She’ll stick closer to her friends, and she’ll be more careful, but hopefully we’ll still get to see that happy, social Joyce from the party.
I think you’re taking the wrong thing out of that statement. Sarah is in NO WAY claiming that it’s Joyce’s fault, that would be extremely bongoy. I’m pretty sure she’s blaming, you know, the attacker? The one who decided “Hey, cute chick, I’ll go drug her!”
She isn’t being modest, she is telling a lie that is most likely to stop people from asking further questions. The real truth was her outburst when she said this wasn’t Dorothy’s fault. She just doesn’t want people to know that she slipped up and tried to comfort somebody’s conscience.
But it’s ambiguous at best whether she means “You shouldn’t have listened to me in the car because I just liked telling you you were wrong” or “You shouldn’t have listened five seconds ago because I just like telliny you you’re wrong” or “you should take EVERYTHING I say with a grain of salt unless it’s ‘you’re right,’ and even then I might just be saying it so I can tell someone ELSE that THEY’RE wrong.”
I think it’s that she meant it both times. She’s angry at them for not watching her and encouraging her to go to the party, but she also realizes it’s not really their fault it happened. I don’t think she’s a pathological liar, only that she uses hyperbole… a lot.
Might just be a case of “it’s punchline time.” A humorous level of self-awareness appears to be a recurring theme for DoA punchlines, and it seems me that Sarah’s just admitting: “I like telling people they’re wrong. Sometimes I get a little carried away with it.”
Somewhat less sarcastically, Willis was apparently raised a fundamentalist Christian of possibly comparable levels of shelteredness and naivety to Joyce. Other similarities, like being the only human alive who can survive The Sound of Music, are unconfirmed. There is anecdotal evidence that he may be the same species as her too.
Those similarities aside, though, I rate the odds that he’s been roofied and nearly raped at…about the same as the odds that he’s really a woman.
I guess that warm fuzzy feeling we all got when she was telling the world to go f*** itself With an electric cattle prod passed a little quick didn’t it?
Actually, this makes me think she’s a lot nicer than she lets on. She made it seem like the only reason she came to help was so she could still have the “I told you so” privilege, but doesn’t it seem like she really means what she says in panel 4?
Would the sheltered fundamentalist react well to waking up in bed with a girl and not knowing what happened last night? Personal experience tells me she’d react just fine as she stops repressing her own urges, but the girl I know wasn’t homeschooled.
Actually, if she’s sheltered enough, she wouldn’t even think that anything bad had happened. Just innocent hugs! (Which, considering everyone would be dressed, would make more sense really)
Yeah, if I woke up next to a friend (especially a lady) and we both had all our clothes on, I’d pretty much assume it was drunken/extremely sleepy snugglin’ times.
I don’t know about you, but waking up to someone fully clothed, especially when you’re both straight females, usually doesn’t mean sexytimes, no matter HOW drunk you were.
AKA, “Yeah, I can be kind of a bongo sometimes.”
Still, it says a bit about her that she can be honest about it. We can all be a little spiteful, after all.
Really, I’m waiting for her backstory to be expanded upon in detail. I’m pretty sure it will explain what seems to be her peeve with people ignoring her advice.
Sarah is starting to grow on me. The last two panels seems to reveal a far more complex character, she seems to put up this jerk façade of “I told you so” but doesn’t entirely mean it.
i continue to come back to the idea that whatever happened with her roommate was a bit more complicated and serious than her being a nark. I think there’s a bigger reason she’s always isolating herself from other people.
I’d just like to say that Sarah’s reassurance of Dorothy actually makes her a better person in my eyes. Sure it means she’s blaming someone who she knows did nothing wrong, but it also means she’s not so condescending that she genuinely believes that by taking Joyce to the party, Dorothy caused this to happen.
Personally, I’m really curious about why Sarah’s so antisocial (or at the very least UNsocial), and this seems to indicate that at least some of her attitude towards Joyce and people in general is a front.
Granted, I definitely can see why people would want to smack her (though I don’t). She is pretty much the opposite of friendly or agreeable.
I think there’s a certain kind of extra-dickish belligerence in complaining about how much longer a storyline will last while the main character is being put into bed for the night. Clearly this is wrapping up, yes?
ah, I see, you meant that it’s taking a long time to read. (For a minute there, I thought you meant it was taking a long time for the *characters* to get over having their friend get roofied.) Welp, I think it’s interesting, but different strokes for different folks.
I’m confused. But then, I confuse easily. Are you saying that this arc is closing David? By that, do you mean the ‘active party scene rape’ arc. I am willing to bet that Joyce’s story isn’t wrapping by a long shot. Having read since ‘roomies’ I just don’t think that when I log on at midnight tonight I will find Joyce drinking a cup of coffee and headachey from her adventure as her friends give her various tidbits of advice: and the world goes on.
No indeed. Either Joyce will suffer an allergic reaction and have to be rushed to emergency. Or the would be rapist will track her roomies down…or file charges first …or die.
So then, wrapping?
Now there will be no evidence that against the attempted rapist. He won’t be kicked out of college. He’ll be free to harass Joyce.
He’s going to attack (and probably succeed) in raping at least one other woman. Even if charges against him for this incident did not send him to jail, it would have still helped authorities work to stop him in the long run.
What if he kills one of his next victims?
The worst thing that will happen is he might be banned from some parties.
Not to mention the only hard physical evidence that does exist is that Joyce broke a glass in his face and then Sarah beat on him with a baseball bat.
I can already hear people saying, “but there was a room full of witnesses!” Yes a room full of drunken college students who didn’t know what was happening until Sarah showed up with a baseball bat and pounded on him. The same room full of people who totally didn’t notice the guy on the ground that somehow left with a dozen people around him.
Not to mention that Roz was at this party so the event could get media attention. “Pastor’s Son Assaulted at Senator’s Sister’s Drunken Sex Party.”
So this could actually get a whole lot worse before it gets better.
There’s also an entire crowd of witnesses that Joyce was out of it and who overheard that her drink was non-alcoholic. Ron, at least, seems like he’d stand up for her.
OTOH, most colleges have an absolutely abysmal record for handling sexual assault. One of my friends in law school did a pretty long research project for a professor on how colleges handle the issue, with special attention to internal punitive hearings, and the most common reaction is to attempt to buy the issue to avoid drawing bad press.
Oh and for all the people who are hating on Sarah. She’s Dr. Cox from Scrubs. Same character. She acts like a jerk half because she knows she’s right and because sometimes keeping people at a distance is easier then letting them get close and watching them get hurt/hurt themselves.
Geez. You’d think none of you had ever come across the “jerk with a heart of gold” character before. They only exist in practically every sitcom, every movie, and every anime.
Really? Because in my opinion if she was really a “Jerk with a heart of gold” then she would have taken her to the hospital as a Jane Doe … And then maybe do a disappearing act, not hide her in the top bunk.
I think that ignoring her wishes and getting her possibly removed from school just because you’re positive you know what’s good for her falls more under the “arrogant jerk” side than the “heart of gold” side.
She’s worried about and voices concern over her roommate’s decision to go out and possibly get hurt. Saves said roommate and helps her get home after being attacked and drugged. It’s against her better judgement but still respecting her roommate’s wishes.
What a fucking bongo. She should know her place and keep her mouth shut.
Really I thought she was paranoid and happened to have had her fears justified due to act of random psycho.
“Against her better judgment” I thought this was exactly what Sarah wanted?
Yeah, this is exactly what she wanted so she bothered to shadow the roommate she was concerned about and defended her when she needed help. It may have absolutely nothing to do with her past experiences with the popular culture at the school. You know, the one that shunned her for doing the right thing?
Oh but what am I thinking, she’s an acerbic, spiteful, horrible person for having her fears justified based on her past experience. Why doesn’t she just get over it, become a drunken partying social climber like Billie and make herself more attentive to the needs of those better than her.
I was kind of hoping Ruth would have noticed the unloading and transport of Joyce to the dorm room and either a) gone on the record with all the goings on or b) helped Amazi-Girl corner Ryan. That said, Billie is right — lofts are not drunk friendly, and if poor Joyce needs to get out for any reason…. Well, let’s say making her a nest on the floor might have been a better option. Especially as one can position a trash can on the floor easier than on a bed.
…..this comic is REALLY starting to bring bad memories from my freshman year back….
what’s even more disturbing is that I care more what happens to Joyce than what’s become of my first roommate.
Note- lofted beds are not drunk friendly. Drunks have to pee a lot and sometimes vomit and getting up and down from that loft to while even slightly drunk is really hard to do.
DOROTHY/JOYCE BEGINS
*hope*
Wait, I thought that ship had already left port.
But now it’s getting rocket fuel.
More like pocket rocket fuel! AMMIRITE!? 😀
……………I’ll just be leaving then.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes….
And also…in that outfit…with Joe in between them.
JOE-SAMMICH!
He’d Joe them both real good!
No no no no no no no no no no no no no…
I get it. Positive negative. You’re a bit, right?
+1
Greetings, program!
You, sir, just made my day. Twice XDXDXDXDXDXD
Eh…no. I am certainly not a spambot. It’s just I went from a mental image of Yuri Paradise (Joyce x Amber) to imagining Joe in the middle in various states of undress. Not being a person who particularly wants to see Joe nude, you see where “no” came from.
[THIS HAS BEEN A MESSAGE FROM THE SPAMBOT]
Psst… Asuka…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fGujzulsas
OH! Now I get it. Thanks for the heads-up.
Oh god, the program has adapted to human speech! Now its only a matter of time before Skynet.
Bow chicka wow wow!
Dotty could experiment and Joyce won’t even remember. 😛
In a sudden twist, it turns out she’s Ryan. They never were in the same panel, were they?
DUH DUH DUHHHHH!
Is pressing that button like pulling the Drama Tag? Because I just pressed it and now I can’t unpress it…
You’re making it sound like the audio equivient of TVTropes. 😮
Well for the record, I LOOOOOVE pushing your buttons!
(stares creepily…at drama button) eh heh…eh heh heh heh…huh?
seriously though. that button is comic gold!
The Red, CANDYLIKE Button!
… which would make it awesome, because TvTropes is awesome. 😀
Why that’s… NAUGHTY!!
NO. BAD.
*smacks with a Smash Bros. fan*
Y’know, those fans made the Ice Climbers worth it to me. Nothing like a Double Fan Trap.
Yea, I got the Ice Climbers banned in one tourneyment that way.
Really, we never could have guessed, Sarah.
Hey now…
…some people just need to be told.
Exhibit A: On the tray; what you say gets thrown back in your face.
Yeah, it’s not like Joyce went there of her own free will. And she was totally asking to be drugged. You’re so right Sarah
/Sarcasm
Wellllllllll Joyce didn’t exactly fight going to the party. I think it would be fair to say she went there of her own free will. She thought it would be fun, and aside from Ryan, it was!
Hopefully she comes away from this thinking “Alright, be more careful next time, but I am still Queen of the Drunks!”

Well, at least Sarah’s being honest about it…
“Eh, I’m a pathological liar, whaddayagonnado?”
(On the other hand, this flash of modesty makes me uncertain of my assessment of her character so far.)
She isn’t being modest, she is telling a lie that is most likely to stop people from asking further questions. The real truth was her outburst when she said this wasn’t Dorothy’s fault. She just doesn’t want people to know that she slipped up and tried to comfort somebody’s conscience.
Yeah, that’s my idea. Or she’s being sarcastic? That’s a possibility.
But panel 4 just felt a little too real to me, I dunno if anyone else thought so too.
Sheeeeshe! Women! Amiright?
You, sir/madam, win the prize for Avvi/Comment Sync for today.
I think it’s that she meant it both times. She’s angry at them for not watching her and encouraging her to go to the party, but she also realizes it’s not really their fault it happened. I don’t think she’s a pathological liar, only that she uses hyperbole… a lot.

::shrug::
Joyce’s first party night ends in her getting drugged, then her ass getting groped by her roommate & friends. Ahhh college…
Seems like a Tuesday to me.
Joyce is taking baby steps ^_^
Indeed. For Joyce today was the most significant day of her whole life. But for Confuzor, it was Tuesday.
I love you all for making that joke.
We miss you, Lord Bison. God rest your soul.
and as Joyce is more or less autobiographical, it adds a disturbing reality subtext to these comics.
Wait… What?
Didn’t you know? Willis is really a woman. (Maggie will be rather surprised when she finds out.)
Unless it turns out that Maggie is a lesbian and she has a preference for reverse traps.
I must be SUPERHUMAN then cos I have watched The Sound of Music at least a half dozen times in my life.
Y’know, I’m starting to get the feeling that Sarah isn’t very nice.
Only starting?
I guess that warm fuzzy feeling we all got when she was telling the world to go f*** itself With an electric cattle prod passed a little quick didn’t it?
Actually, this makes me think she’s a lot nicer than she lets on. She made it seem like the only reason she came to help was so she could still have the “I told you so” privilege, but doesn’t it seem like she really means what she says in panel 4?
I also enjoy telling people that they’re wrong. I finally found a character I can relate to in this comic!
No you didn’t!
Is Joyce wearing leather pants? Her ass is so shiny!
Oh no, Willis just contracted Butts Disease from Jeph Jacques. So attention NEEDS to be drawn to the butts.
Especially Joyce’s butt.
So in other words DAT ASS
Avatar win.
Win. Just…made of win.
Oh, and “What are things Ryan wishes he was handling right now instead of bleeding all over the carpet?”
I’ll take Amazi-girl arch-nemeses for $400 Alec…
Nooooo, he’s bleeding all over Amazi-Girl’s boots, not the carpet.
So Joyce is DOA’s Hanners?
Maybe Joyce will develop some knid of OCD as a result of this event.
Let’s hope it’s not a Vermicious Knid.
Oh, yeah, Sarah? Well, guess what? Joyce’s at least 40% sweater! How’d’ya like that, huh?
No she isn’t, the weight is coming from that stuff underneath the sweater.
Puppies!
YAAAAAAAAY!
(Disney is God)
See people always were drooling over Daphne from Scooby Doo while I had Velma all to my self. Heh heh heh…
Or as Scoob would say “Rhee hee hee hee”
I have seen enough attempts at Scooby Doo porn to not really want to know how Scooby Doo feels about Velma.
“Shaggy?”
I have never met a person in my life who would have preferred Daphne over Velma.
And the amount of Velma pictures on the internet agrees with me.
(I can’t believe I’m actually making this joke, ugh)
This Joyce just got 30% more sweatery!
Innocent hugs are exactly how it starts. Then she starts to face the truth: for her, it isn’t as innocent as she claims.
Are you quietly suggesting lesbianism to our author?
He’ll likely make it show up in the next couple of weeks.
Given precedent, he’s actually behind schedule.
In Sarah’s defense, telling other people that they’re wrong is really, really fun.
No it’s not!
Erm, yes. Yes, it is.
Wow, that felt good…
Stop lying. You felt terrible and you know it.
I enjoy being a total twat, but only in a sarcastic joking manner and everyone knows I’m not saying it to be mean.
Well, people I know anyway….
If Bender was here he could say, “I’m 30% sweater!” and then clang his chest a couple times.
Sure, it wouldn’t make sense at all, but that’s what came to mind. 😉
It’s dolomite baby!
It won’t cop out when there’s heat all about!
God damnit Sarah even Joyce would smack you for that one.
Okay, this made me think that I wouldn’t want to smack Sarah as much as I did when I posted my comment under this one, but I still want to.
Err, the people regularly harassing her for jailing her old druggie roommate? Remember that? Anyone?
Being harassed makes one suspicious of others. Unsurprisingly.
^ This. I was just gonna say “Did everybody miss the comic strips about Sarah before these ones?”
Okay, I know she’s trying to be understanding/nice, but in the last panel I just want to smack Sarah.
She is doing the awesomely right thing in this situation, and she came to Joyce’ rescue, but still.
No need to be a bongo about it?
Hey, Kevin Spacey would have become a legend for telling Kate Bosworth she was WRONG! if he wast one already.
Cheese and rice guys, it’s just a roofie, i get it rape in college is bad… Heck rape any time is bad news. Lets not drag it on forever.
Is this an attempt at trolling?
no, I just legitimately think this arc is getting old fast.
Well is it fast or is it slow? Make up your mind!
I think there’s a certain kind of extra-dickish belligerence in complaining about how much longer a storyline will last while the main character is being put into bed for the night. Clearly this is wrapping up, yes?
“Dicks have drive and clarity of vision, but they are not clever.” – Bullet Tooth Tony
… I officially have a great reason to google up Bullet Tooth Tony.
I thank you for the feeding an internet addiction with a suggestion that you never look up or click a link for pictures of goats.
Impressive that they have such clarity of vision, seeing as how they’ve only one eye each.
BAZINGA!
I demand that you hastily make twenty more strips about getting Joyce put to bed and slot them into the lineup, just to bother Mr. silk.
(Packing them full of les-yay is optional.)
Just for that comment, I think you should drag this out for the next two months.
Man, I hope you aren’t like those people who take up smoking out of frustration with anti-smoking ads.
/onthevergeofreallywrong
ah, I see, you meant that it’s taking a long time to read. (For a minute there, I thought you meant it was taking a long time for the *characters* to get over having their friend get roofied.) Welp, I think it’s interesting, but different strokes for different folks.
Defiantly doing down to earth drama better this time around.
some of the greatest works of art have been borne out of defiance…
I will find the Like button for this comment, or I will die trying.
I would have told Sarah that “now is not the time for jokes”, if I hadn’t laughed.
I’m confused. But then, I confuse easily. Are you saying that this arc is closing David? By that, do you mean the ‘active party scene rape’ arc. I am willing to bet that Joyce’s story isn’t wrapping by a long shot. No indeed. Either Joyce will suffer an allergic reaction and have to be rushed to emergency. Or the would be rapist will track her roomies down…or file charges first …or die.
So then, wrapping?
The arc is called “Yesterday Was Thursday.” Thus it must end at midnight.
Groundhog day loop! Groundhog day loop!
Hey, he might do it. You never know.
Does this mean that the next arc will be called “Tomorrow Will Be Sunday”?
Must say, the embarrassed look does make Sarah look rather cute, doesn’t it?
I know this is terribly insensitive at a time like this but: DAT ASS. Joyce’s tush looks great.
“So the weekend finally starts tomorrow?! Thank god, it seems like this weeks being going on for months!”
I’m not sure what to think of comments about Joyce’s butt, since I don’t sexualize cartoon characters.
I have the same thing about smackin’ characters upside the chops.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVUOvHYv3ME
That’s all I have to say.
The perfect video for explaining PSL.
@Rust: So you have never suffered from Perverse Sexual Lust?
WARNING: TROPE ALERT!
Willis coined the term, actually.
Yes I know, cos the Bible tells me so 😛
Did we just have multi ethnic butt grabbing. I’ve see movies that start out like that.
This is soooooo the wrong thing to do.

Oh boy. This can’t go anywhere good.
Not to mention the only hard physical evidence that does exist is that Joyce broke a glass in his face and then Sarah beat on him with a baseball bat.

Geez. You’d think none of you had ever come across the “jerk with a heart of gold” character before. They only exist in practically every sitcom, every movie, and every anime.
It’s because, in real life, we have a name for the “Jerk with a heart of gold” character.
That Douchebag That Just Can’t Get Over It.
Really? Because in my opinion if she was really a “Jerk with a heart of gold” then she would have taken her to the hospital as a Jane Doe … And then maybe do a disappearing act, not hide her in the top bunk.
I don’t think any of the other gals, or Ron, would have been down with that idea.
I think that ignoring her wishes and getting her possibly removed from school just because you’re positive you know what’s good for her falls more under the “arrogant jerk” side than the “heart of gold” side.
But Cox is funny and insightful. Sarah is just mean spirited and self righteous.

hehe… they touched Joyce’s butt.

Dorothy no, not getting that vibe but Sarah…
She’s not at least thirty percent sweater. She’s at least thirty percent sweater puppies. (rimshot)
I second this, putting a very sick person up there is a very bad idea, a sudden need for the bathroom could end up with broken limbs.
And with that last line, Sarah becomes THE GREATEST WILLISVERSE CHARACTER OF ALL TIME.
…..this comic is REALLY starting to bring bad memories from my freshman year back….
what’s even more disturbing is that I care more what happens to Joyce than what’s become of my first roommate.
She ain’t heavy, she’s my sister in Jesus.
Note- lofted beds are not drunk friendly. Drunks have to pee a lot and sometimes vomit and getting up and down from that loft to while even slightly drunk is really hard to do.
lord knows i’ve tried
“Yes it’s your fault, but I’ll deal with your guilt trip once I got my sleep !”
