I always loved how the U.S. government draws districts, it makes no sense. Well, except all those politicans that re-draw them to keep their party in power. I guess it does make sense then.
Fair to one person might be that just about everybody in one district agrees with them while to another it means that every party has a fighting chance. The first means that laws are more likely to agree with you. The second means that a politician has to appease a wider variety of people.
When they can get away with it, though, it’s pretty much the opposite of fair. Try and split up areas that oppose their party across several districts, so their opponents’ voters can’t get a majority in any one district. The idea isn’t ‘fair,’ it’s keeping the opposition out of the legislature.
Fair is based on perspective. If a republican lives in a largely republican district(such as near the borders), it’s fair to him that those who govern his area are republican. But if most of his neighbors are democrats and the district is redrawn so that his part of the area is now in a more even or even dominated by democrats, it’s no longer fair to him because he was shifted to another district that is opposed to his way of thinking. However, if the area was shifted to be more even, the democrats see it as fair because they have a possibility to sway opinion.
Not that it matters unless elections are coming up or they have money to “donate.”
I get your argument, it just only makes sense from the politicians point of view.
@ Insomniac: that only works if you’re confident of state-wide majorities, or when your goal isn’t to eliminate opposition seats in general but to ensure the defeat of specific opposition incumbents.
Concentrating as much of the opposition as you can into a few “ghetto districts” while turning a bunch of formerly competetive districts around them into safe districts for your party is often a more effective technique.
For instance, in Virginia the Republican legislature shifted heavily democratic precincts in Norfolk and Portsmouth from the 2nd and 4th Congressional districts to the already strongly Democratic 3rd, which, like the original gerrymander, is a long, thin, twisty district (the 3rd covers parts of cities and counties from Norfolk in the east to Richmond in the West, about 90 miles long and only a couple wide). The 3rd is a Democratic safe district, but the districts around it are ALL safely Republican now. Giving the other side one safe seat and getting three or more yourself (the “more” depends on how safely Republican some of the the other neighboring districts were before the gerrymandering) is a good deal, politically.
Actually the US government proper, the federal level, doesn’t do any districting. That’s up to the state legislatures, which get to draw their own districts and those of the state’s House Representatives, for the benefit of whichever party has a majority after the census. Or at any time, due to innovation by the Texas GOP. Though Iowa and recently California have non-partisan commissions to do this instead.
Congress might have the authority to draw its own districts, as it specified that the House would be elected from single-member districts by law, but AFAIK it’s never tried.
Ah, to be stuck in the early 1800s. Smells like flawed democracy!
“Flawed democracy” = Federal Republic = NOT democracy. Heck, the US doesn’t even hold elections, fair or otherwise. President is elected by the Electoral College, which is elected state by state on the principle of disproportional representation. Likewise the Senate. House is elected district by gerrymandered district. President can and has been elected more than twice with fewer votes for his Delegates than for is opponent’s. Senate and House are both controlled currently by the Party whose candidates received fewer votes, overall. AND we have a major movement to effectivel disenfranchise voters added to the grand american princiole of making it more difficult to vote. Whether or not the state-level & district-level elections are democratic, the US is not a democracy.
But notice carefully- suck up to the voters only during voting season… otherwise, fuck the voters and do whatever the lobbyists want. Hell, half the time take the money, lie consistently to everyone and then get busted for either drugs, drinking, rape or shitty driving…
Or go for the gold and see Russia from your back porch!
Somehow, I see Robin having a map of the state with her little district outlined, and all the surrounding areas scribbled out and written over in speedily crafted letters reading “People I don’t have to care about.”
That’s actually pretty common in campaign offices (minus the text that says “People I don’t have to care about.”) There are always several large, detailed maps that show the exact geography of the district.
Oh, and there are many constituent offices where if you go to the office of a neighboring district, even if that office is much closer to you than your district’s office, the staff won’t even talk to you. It’s very sad.
Right, I forgot about Walthers and Comicquest in my post up aboce. E-ville still doesn’t have much to recommend it, though. There’s also Steak & Shake, but that’s available just about anywhere south of the Wisconsin border (much to my eternal dismay).
I rather like Roz – but I still think she was stupid as hell to post videos of herself having sex online. If you don’t want people to judge you for your lifestyle… well, you can’t avoid it completely, but you can remove a HUGE amount of scrutiny by not posting videos of your sexual exploits online!
If Roz is a Democrat voter while Robin is a Repubican Congresswoman, it gives Roz a unique advantage in that all she needs to do to increase the chances that a Democrat Congressperson gets into power is to cause a scandal.
Pretty much, but it works best if you pretend to follow another party* and openly claim you support them, that way, any scandels you cause later on will have that much more damaging effect.
*(democrat pretending to be repubican or vice versa)
As the old axiom goes: “To successfully stab someone in the back, you must first get behind them.”
Well of course. Those currently known as “liberals” in the US lack any capacity for embarrassment. (In quotes because I hate applying the perfectly good word liberal to people whose attitudes and actions are anything but.)
Actually, it might be more complicated (and interesting) than that. Robin might be the Democratic congresswoman, holding onto her seat through targeted conservative views (or even being a full on Blue Dog Democrat, though it seems more likely she’s centrist to centrist-right). By building up scandal in the family values arena, Roz may make it possible for a Republican to go hard-right against her, forcing her to either retreat to the left in hopes of getting heavy turnout in the urban areas or lose the seat (most likely lose the seat).
So, Roz, in asserting her independence from Robin/Robin’s agenda and striking a blow for personal freedom and the freedom of self-expression, may be responsible for getting someone far less disposed to her means of expressing it.
See I gotta disagree with this. From Roz’s point of view, being told not to post it online would be like being told to hide that part of her life, which is clearly a part of her life that she feels very strongly about. It wouldn’t seem fair to her that she would have to keep sex, which to her is a form of activism, behind closed doors. Especially seeing as she seems like the type of person to believe sex is never something to be ashamed of. And she’d be right.
I finally get home after a 4 hour meeting on redistricting and I decide to relax by reading something completely apolitical. And then this comic pops up. DAMN YOU, WILLIS!
But I do have to give props for drawing the Indiana 9th so accurately. It was immediately recognizable.
Phew! I wanted to simplify it to the point where it’d look like something someone could believably sketch out, but not so loose that it wasn’t recognizable.
Evansville is, I’m assuming, Walky’s hometown. Walky was trying to decide if his town was located in Robin’s district, and whether or not Roz just called him a hick that isn’t worth her caring about. Once he learns that Evansville is, in fact, not part of that district, he’s relieved, as being offended over Roz’s insult would have been a lot of work.
I’unno, Robin’s tone is kinda giving me the feeling that she’s more competent than you might expect. Still basically Robin, minus a bit of her usual flightiness.
I’m pretty sure she’s got some sort of contingency for this.
Nah. All she has to do is “forgive” Roz again for having been corrupted by the liberal education system. Or try and turn “hicks” into a badge of pride.
In her defense, Robin never said “hicks.” This could be a point to separate herself from her sister, and show that she disapproves but has no control over Roz’s antics. Kinda like a “See? I tried. She just don’t listen. Sisters, right?”
Anyone with a younger sibling could relate. Makes her seem more down-to-earth, more everyday. Anyone who IS a younger sibling could probably relate to this interplay as well.
All this said, it could be that Robin is doing all of this without realizing it while honestly trying to “correct” Roz’s behavior. She goes about it in an interesting way, but she cares about Roz, and wants her to be successful. Most likely Roz is going to try to get a job somewhere in the area once she’s out of college, and that video is going to bite her in the ass, especially if she’s trying to get a job from the “peeps who think she’s a hellbound slut.”
Yes, if I was Robin, I’d mention that the video wasn’t going to score her any points in any job save the sex industry, and if that’s what she was going for, she might as well drop out because getting dong’d doesn’t take a degree, so she should save her money for Ramen, condoms and STD tests.
I’m so glad I was right that the sex tape was mainly a ploy by Roz to massively piss off her sister, who is a major jerk. I hope Roz keeps on making sex tapes until Robin apologizes or loses re-election.
It’s strange, Roz was annoying and dislikeable in Shortpacked, and despite being exactly the same here I’m now rooting for her (huh huh). And that’s despite that she is kind of buggering up her sister’s career.
Though since her sister’s openly using her and goes on to try & put social pressure/slut-shaming on in front of everyone, I’m not sure I’d want this Robin to have political power and influence,
The version of Robin who actually cares more about her Senate job is a little frightening. If the Shortpacked! Robin got her job by overdosing on cadburry eggs, I wonder how this one got it…
By studying political science in college, gathering a loyal base of followers, and applying for the position along with a lengthy and thorough advertising campaign.
Then after she’d lost horribly, I dunno, witchcraft or something.
I hope that somewhere in the vague, hazy future, Robin’s political career is suddenly shaken by a shocking scandal involving a torrid lesbian love affair with a cute blonde “gender studies” professor.
If a sex tape of this got leaked to the internet, it would provide a nice counterpoint to the Shortpacked! sequence of events.
then her aide would kick her out of the house THAT SHE BOUGHT. in an attempt to both pick up the pieces from her ruined political career and patch up the relationship with her younger sister, robin enrolls as a student at IU and moves into amber’s dorm room. after that, it more or less follows the plot from rodney dangerfield’s “back to school”.
While I understand Roz’s need for individuality, my antics do not cause problems for those I care about. Roz can still be herself without causing problems with Robin. That’s what being a responsible adult means.
I can be myself without causing trouble for my family so long as I don’t be myself within earshot of any churchmembers.
Roz has a similar situation here, but instead of churchmembers it’s the general citizenry. I’m going to theorize that she’s been given a lot of grief for her behavior in the past and what she allows to be seen in the public eye. Resistance is only natural in these situations. These things escalate themselves crazy quick.
Now Roz is on her own for the first time completely unmonitored. Doesn’t have a sister constantly complaining every time there are witnesses to her sexual activity. Takes the first opportunity to pretty much irrevocably show the world who she is and stick it to Robin.
All speculation to be sure, but looking at Roz’s personality type and considering the degree of discretion that would be asked of her as the sister of a congress-woman I think it sounds about right.
And seriously, Roz was gonna cause problems for Robin somehow. She’s a college student, has an active sex life, actively and vocally campaigns for safe sex, has strong opinions about God that do not fit the norm. Some reporter was gonna get their hands on what must be no less than sixteen scandalous photo opportunities that she presents daily. It was unavoidable.
I may not approve of the sex video as of yet, but I fully support living her life without regard for her sister’s career considering the severity of the situation. All fine and dandy for me to look both ways before speaking of matters scientific, spiritual, sexual, or ordering coffee. Making sure I have a fake excuse when I go out on Sunday is entirely doable. Roz’s situation, that’s not doable. Girl shouldn’t have to spend her days pussyfooting around what might upset the voters if word got out.
Taking the initiative on sending out the word, that was a sketchy move, but aside from that she really shouldn’t have to care.
I disagree. Sure, she shouldn’t have to pussyfoot around, but there’s a difference between going out and having sex with whomever you want, and going out and putting a sex video on the internet in a country that is crazy for political scandal when your sister is a congresswoman. One is normal life, the other is stupid, irresponsible, and shows absolutely no love or kindness towards your own family.
If that’s what the political system requires, it is a failing of the political system that should not be tolerated. No one, not Robin, not Robin’s district, NO ONE gets to tell her, “You shame us by association.”
If this costs Robin her position, that’s intolerable. “That’s just the way it is,” is not an excuse. Politicians have overcome scandals where they were directly responsible for what occurred, such as siring children out of wedlock.
Roz has chosen the hard path, reminding me of a Tolstoy story in which a bunch of people discuss how far they’ve fallen short of living a proper life. At certain points, one or another of them declares an intention to do so, only to be reminded of their responsibility to family, friends, the community, or the sake of their personal future, until no one is allowed to do what’s right.
Roz made the hard choice, and every argument I’ve seen against it comes down to, “Society will punish her and her sister for that.” It was for times like this that Theodore Sturgeon advised us to, “Ask the next question.”
Why should society punish Roz (or Robin) for her behaviour?
I’d say it’s more a failure of the voters. Unfortunately, under our political system, those voters kinda do get to dictate what image a politician (and, by extension, that politician’s family) must have in order to get/stay elected.
As for why she should be punished, she shouldn’t be. But you don’t change norms and expectations overnight. As much as some hoosiers from the southern part of the state might hate to hear it, that area is pretty full of conservatives and farmers. The two added together tend to equal people who aren’t overly fond of someone who goes out and broadcasts “I’m having sex with whomever I want!” A considerate person would try to avoid bringing this sort of problem on her sister. Roz did not.
According to one site I found,* it’s been about 50-55% for presidential election years and less than 40% in midterm elections. Of course, that doesn’t give data on how many Americans voted for fictional characters, which is, in my opinion, the same as not voting.
I feel I addressed the difference quite clearly in my post. That was most of those last two paragraphs.
Though I will point out that the notion that she should only be herself if it’s normal is pretty fucked up. I wouldn’t consider any of what she does outside of the sex tape to be “A normal life”. She wears a condom hat for crying out loud.
A normal life doesn’t actually involve such ridiculous sexual behavior to begin with. A normal life doesn’t involve a sibling in congress. Normal people don’t use female pronouns to refer to the Christian God. There’s nothing wrong with any of this. She has no obligation to live a normal life. Just maybe not go out of her way to fuck her sister over.
Once again, I did state quite clearly that there is a difference between living her life without regard for her sister’s career and this sex video that appears to be a pretty deliberate middle finger to her sister.
Normal is, of course, subjective, but I was going with relative there. I wasn’t trying to imply that she should completely adhere to any societal notion of normal, but that she needs to at least keep out of the media in her “abnormal” life.
As for your last 2 paragraphs, somehow I didn’t even see the last one, but the rest of your post seemed to be saying “Roz is sticking it to her sister, but that’s perfectly fine.” No, it’s not perfectly fine. It undermines Robin’s career, it undermines her ability to do her job, and it really is just plain stupid. If you’re a pastor’s kid, you don’t let the world know you’re breaking every commandment. You don’t go speeding through every red light in a car bearing your employer’s name. You don’t do things that you know will cause trouble for another person just because you’re 18 and free. That is pure selfishness.
Perhaps I was unclear. I did kind of go all over the place in that diatribe.
The sticking it to her sister part in the beginning was the speculation on why she would do this. No excusing. Just speculating on possible explanations.
After this I went on to why she shouldn’t have to consider whether her every action could come back and bite her sister in the ass all day long because of the sheer infeasibility of it.
Once I’d said my two pieces on that I went on to say differentiate the ways she doesn’t consider her sister from the ways she deliberately screws with her sister. Living her life in the public eye without regard is fine, but it shouldn’t be too much to ask that she not go out of her way to manufacture footage that will negatively impact her sister and release it to the general public.
Ever since Robin’s appearance I’ve been chuckling over the many many articles that could be run with a photo of Condom-hat Roz on the front page. They would all be an infinitely better read than whatever’s being written about the sex video.
You know full well that would have gone way past viral too. We’re talking an entire slew of internet memes here. Right up there with when the internet first discovered cats while trying to investigate a Zero Wing villain.
Has anyone else noticed Walky is remarkably calm around Dorothy? Even so far as having what passes for normal conversation when Walky is involved? That last panel…
I am guessing they are talking with out him going into brain vacation mode, because he is so distracted by what is going on to realize who he is talking to.
Panels 1-5 make me happy. I don’t get panel 6, because I’m not familiar with Indiana. Also, Leslie is totally crushing on Robin, and that makes me so happy.
Ah, the good old 9th where I grew up. Granted, it IS filled with hicks and inbreds (my family being both), but once upon a time, people were smart enough to vote for Lee Hamilton. Alas, no longer. Bloomington is like the Twin Cities: civilization in the midst of Michelle Bachmann loving morons.
You must have a truly strange definition of civilization. The only thing in Indiana more annoying than the hicks is the self-proclaimed intellectuals and progressives who look down on them.
I forgot this comic was in Indiana – the reference to Evansville made me wonder if you had somehow created a comic where the city changed based on the geo location of the requester’s IP. Then I remembered I moved 4 years ago. It’s been a weird morning…
I would agree with Roz that she can do what she wants being an adult and all. I’m not sure, however, that she should get pissy when people judge her for videotaping it and then putting it online.
It reminds me of women who wear shirts that show off a crazy amount of skin and then complain that men are looking at her “like that”.
Well, in a perfect world, women would be able to wear whatever the hell they want and not be judged for it, and not be thought a slut for being as open about enjoying sex as the typical male. Roz wants that perfect world to be a reality, and who can blame her?
She’s definitely going the wrong way about it, though. Baiting people to offend her sensibilities, and getting aggressive or passive-aggressive when they do is just about the least diplomatic way to put forth her idealism.
I can get behind the idea of living your life without ridicule and discrimination from other people. I really can. The problem that arises here is the issue of responsibility toward other people, especially those related to you. Just because you’re an individual doesn’t mean you have carte blanche to do whatever you want despite potential harm it could do to others.
Have Roz’s actions caused harm to Robin? I don’t know yet, so I’ll hold off on that call. But Roz seems to have done it with that intent if I’m reading this right. And that’s… well, that’s kind of not cool. There has to be a balance between individualism and responsibility to other people. Roz seems pretty firmly on the side of “Screw you all, I won’t change for anyone.” Which, while admirable when tempered with reason, can get out of hand really quickly if handled poorly. Now, I haven’t seen enough of this Robin to say whether or not she’s completely on the opposite end of the argument. So far it just seems like she’s annoyed, and maybe a little hurt though I’ll freely admit I’m likely reading too much into the situation, that Roz has gone out of her way to do her harm.
I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how this turns out. But I’ll just say that so far Roz hasn’t impressed me. She has a defensible point, but she’s going about it by throwing a temper tantrum like a child.
Yeah, Roz’s assertions aside, she’s being an immature, just-out-of-high-school teen. Similar thing kinda happened on a senior class language trip overseas I went on back in HS (this was a lllooooong time ago). Somewhere over the Atlantic, a few of my classmates realized that (at the time, dunnow about now…) there was no age restriction on alcohol consumption in the countries we were visiting. They proceeded to get sloshed on the mini booze bottles that flights back then were able to serve.
Well…let’s just say they ended up “inaugurating” what was (up until that point) a clean, relatively new 747.
Point being, just because you can freely do something, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. And no bongoing about the repercussions afterwards.
I know it’s practically expected in this day and age that we hate all politicians, but putting that aside…
What a selfish little brat. So, she’s willing to potentially destroy her older sister’s chosen career just to prove that she’s a college-aged free spirit?
Roz is easily my least favorite character right now.
Yeeeeah… I really don’t like Roz in this universe either. For all those defending her actions: Have you forgotten that she also posted the video without first asking Joe? It’s not a question of her changing herself to please hicks; it’s a question of her not giving a damn about who she might potentially damage. Sure, presently Joe either doesn’t really care or have enough foresight to realize how bad this could get, but the point remains – Roz has absolutely no regard for anyone else’s welfare, and I fail to see how anyone can find her to be utterly without fault. There’s nothing that stops her from having sex with whomever she wants, but posting compromising video without your partner’s consent is another thing altogether.
Oh, Evansville.
Wait. What’s Evansville?
Evansville is located in the southwest corner near Kentucky and Illinois. It’s the third-largest city in Indiana.
To give an indication of how significant an accomplishment being the third-largest city in Indiana is, nobody in Evansville knows which city in Indiana is the second-largest city.
A small city outside Chicago, home to some stuff and Northwestern U.
No, that’s Evans*ton*. Evansville’s a city in Indiana, pretty close to Louisville.
If by pretty close you mean a good three hours, then yeah. Well, it’s probably 2 due to the time change.
Evansville’s around Owensboro, isn’t it? Or am I thinking of the wrong Ville?
Owensboro is east and across the Ohio River from Evansville.
Good lord, people, Google maps!
awa64 is correct, it’s in the “toe” of Indiana’s boot, closer to Paducah than Louisville.
When you live in a cornfield in southern Indiana (as I do), two hours to a larger city is pretty durn close. 😛
Corydon is only slightly larger than a cornfield. So I understand. 🙂
I coulda used to tell you what the second largest city in IN is, but not only did it change a couple years ago, here in Eville, we have realized that as small as our “third largest city” is….it doesn’t really matter which city is number two.
I think it’s South Bend. Don’t quote me on that, though.
Ft Wayne is the second. South Bend is fourth.
And Bloomington is currently #6.
It’s got a decent college (University of Evansville) and about nothing else to recommend it. This is from first-hand experience.
what about the (allegedly) haunted Willard Library? Thats something else the “city” has going for it… I’m from Florida but my dad’s family is from E-ville and I used to visit every summer. Truthfully this is the first i’ve ever heard it called a “city” and it kinda makes me chuckle a bit. then again it’s been like 6 years since i’ve been so who knows it may have grown.
We’ve actually got two universities and a technical school. But yeah there’s nothing here despite our “city” status. For some perspective, at UE during orientation they asked us “who here is from a big city” and “who here is from a small town” and the only people that didn’t raise their hands to either question were all the locals. Think one giant suburb. Actually, we do have the Fall Festival, 2nd largest street festival in the nation (behind Mardi Gras) last I checked.
Damn gerrymandering.
Wow that the first time I’ve heard that term used correctly on internet comments. Congrats!
Well, how else would someone use jerrymandering?
I went out gerrymandering and found a couple of newts, some A. opacum, some Eurycea guttolineata, and a few Desmogs.
You’d be surprised how often people misuse words, especially less common words, like “polyglot.” It’d be funny if it weren’t so obvious that its a product of our education system failing…
I still haven’t forgotten being corrected when I expressed interest in the entymology of a word. Fortunately I was corrected without mockery.
Silly person! *Everyone* that etymology is the study of word origins. Entymology is the study of ents.
[here endeth the silliness]
Entymology – it’s a growing field of study. And it’s growing vvvvvvveeeeeeeeerrrrrrrryyyyyyyyy ssssslllllllllooooooooowwwwwwwwlllllllyyyyyyyyyyy
You find a Gerry, and then you mander him.
You got it all wrong! See, first, you find Jerry Seinfeld, then you walk him around all the unimportant parts of town in a roundabout aimless way…
Oh wait. That’s Jerry-meandering.
Is that something like Joeing someone?
Vote Desanto!
Or she’ll gerrymander you till you do!
I wouldn’t gerrymander her even if she asked me to.
If you want to talk about gerrymandering, THIS is my congressional district: http://api.ning.com/files/Apx093rhBK1rLYze-6nxjkBH5c-QX2YmO7242Cgc6dLvjDX7RcY6VwBDnvVvHxXtupQBWNUabmvkfbObsiTRuYrny9lRa85c/NorthCarolinas12thcongressionaldistrict.gif
That’s actually an improvement over what it looked like before 2010, the old line extended another 50 miles all the way to Durham.
“Am I offended? …eh, too much work.”
“Offend me once, shame on you. Offend me twice…. eh, screw it. Sticks n stones….”
Vote Desanto!
She can change the blackened hearts of hell bound sluts to please you hicks!
Vote Desanto!
For more slutty sister webcam whores!
That could actually work.
I bet even gun toting bible thumping bigots like slutty webcam whores, albeit in a surreptitious way…
Hey, voting is anonymous. Clearly, it was some OTHER bible-thumping bigot who voted Yes to Proposition: More Slutty Webcam Whores.

I always loved how the U.S. government draws districts, it makes no sense. Well, except all those politicans that re-draw them to keep their party in power. I guess it does make sense then.
It’s supposed to make it fair, it’s just that no one agrees what fair is.
Actually its to maintain a majority of seats in the legistlature. Fair never really entered into it at all.
“No one agrees what fair is.”
Fair to one person might be that just about everybody in one district agrees with them while to another it means that every party has a fighting chance. The first means that laws are more likely to agree with you. The second means that a politician has to appease a wider variety of people.

I get your argument, it just only makes sense from the politicians point of view.
Fair is a perspective only until your head is cut off.
Even then, it’s still dependent on which side of the axe your on.
So fixed fights are fair?
DC horror says fixed = fair to the fixer. DC horror also says that war is peace & hate is love.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerrymandering
Sucking up to your voters is important, even if they might be trailer-trash.
Vote Desanto!
because her whole family values sucking!
It’s worthwhile to be able to accurately draw your district.
Am I the only one who felt like Walky was breaking the fourth wall and addressing us directly?
Is it just me, or does Leslie seem to be developing a little crush in panel one?
She might just be intimidated by Robin’s authority
Her “authority,” if you know what I mean.
Leslie as your gravitar makes it perfect.
I live to please.
…robin.
with your penis…wait…
for a nickel
Her “assthority”.
Leslie was thinking something totally different Robin asked to “borrow some chalk” until she remember this is a classroom.
I read Robin’s lines with a Sal voice in my head just now. =/ ?
Where’d you get a Sal voice in the first place?!
Not hard. IMAGINATION.
at the gas station. there’s a little display next to the cash register. two for a dollar!
“YOU CAN BORROW ANYTHING YOU WANT, INCLUDING MY CAR AND MY LIFE’S SAVINGS”
“AND MY NETHER-REGIONS.”
“AND ANYTHING IN MY TOY DRAWER”
Which toy draw would that be?
ALL THESE THINGS ARE YOURS EXCEPT MY BACKDOOR. ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE.
(Leslies *is* a science fiction geek!)
USE THEM TOGETHER. USE THEM IN PEACE. OR AT LEAST PAY FOR TREATMENT AFTERWARDS.
no space docking for leslie? man, what a let down.
Wooo! Evansville! I grew up there. They had a nice laser tag, minigolf, and arcade place. The comicbook shop wasn’t that bad either.
Walthers…and….Comicquest?
Yeah. I went to school with one of the Walther kids ages ago. I haven’t been there for about a decade, so I don’t know if either are still around.
the stores? yeah. Walthers is still in business and if you were refering to Comicquest it’s still alive too.
Right, I forgot about Walthers and Comicquest in my post up aboce. E-ville still doesn’t have much to recommend it, though. There’s also Steak & Shake, but that’s available just about anywhere south of the Wisconsin border (much to my eternal dismay).
Peep taste great spit-roasted.
Spit-roast has a whole different meaning where I am from. 😀
They taste like bovinae by the way. 😛
Remember: The best meat’s in the rump.
Be offended Walky. She’ll accomplish it soon enough.
I can understand Walky, being offended is too troublesome to bother with, besides these days, people who say offensive things either:
1/Did it accidently (SHIT HAPPENS)
2/Are trolling (BEST TO IGNORE THOSE PEOPLE)
3/Are attention whores (IGNORE THOSE PEOPLE TOO)
or just dont find what u find offensive to be offensive
If you are as thick-skinned as I am, nothing much offends you anymore, annoying you maybe but offend? Hardly ever.
Walky should demand she eat a “box of chicken nuggets” to make up for it…on tape…slowly…
Robin on the other hand condemns AND denounces Roz’s commentary…cause walky’s her peeps fo shizzle!
Word life!
I don’t think calling someone hicks applies as accidental.
Sometimes ignoring them is the worst thing to do.
I always imagined that Robin and Walky would get along. They could bond over their common love of junk food!
… I wonder how it would go down if Walky ate a bowl of cadbury egg cereal… S**t would get REAL!
is that supposed to be monroe county?
Counties =/= districts
No it’s Robin’s constituency, which includes part of monroe county.
I rather like Roz – but I still think she was stupid as hell to post videos of herself having sex online. If you don’t want people to judge you for your lifestyle… well, you can’t avoid it completely, but you can remove a HUGE amount of scrutiny by not posting videos of your sexual exploits online!
Y’know… maybe she did it deliberately to either antagonize Robin or to tell her to mind her own business. Odd way of doing either, but still.
If Roz is a Democrat voter while Robin is a Repubican Congresswoman, it gives Roz a unique advantage in that all she needs to do to increase the chances that a Democrat Congressperson gets into power is to cause a scandal.
You evil political strategist, you 😛
Does the same goes for a liberal/conservative relationship?
Pretty much, but it works best if you pretend to follow another party* and openly claim you support them, that way, any scandels you cause later on will have that much more damaging effect.
*(democrat pretending to be repubican or vice versa)
As the old axiom goes: “To successfully stab someone in the back, you must first get behind them.”
I think it’s easier for a political liberal to embarrassed a conservative than it is the other way around. At least in the US.
Depends on how often liberals Twitter their underwear boners.
Epic.
In Australia, Liberals (Capital L) are the conservative party.
Well of course. Those currently known as “liberals” in the US lack any capacity for embarrassment. (In quotes because I hate applying the perfectly good word liberal to people whose attitudes and actions are anything but.)
That…is…Genius!
Vote Desanto! We have the oppositions sex tape!
Vote DeSanto!
We have cookies!!
To err is human
To vote for DeSanto, divine.
What does The Cheese have to do with this?
Nothing as far as I can tell, Vermont is the state for cheese not Indiana.
Yeah, and everyone knows Evansville is in the bloody-8th
Wait, so that’s supposed to be the Indiana 9th. Does that make it…DISTRICT 9?
well, there was pr0n involved…
Politics and family never go well together it always causes problems.
All Roz needs to do is announce that she’s related to Sarah Palin, and the problem will be solved!
I hear ya, Walky. Holding your undies in a wad just takes too much trouble…
Also, definitely some interesting insight we’ve been getting in these last couple of strips.
(The joke)
(My head)
‘Cause Roz called a buncha people “inbred hicks” and Walky wanted to see if she was including his town in that category.
Robin, you idiot. All those students who has video recording devices before still have video recording devices!
Having your sister call them all a bunch of hicks is not going to help your re-election efforts.
/textwall
The Kinsey Institute for sexual research is at IU Bloomington. I figure Roz has plans.
Witchcraft? Like Christine O’Donnell?
yeah, except… ya know… it worked
House, not Senate. Unless I missed something and she’s a state senator.
Indeed. People are too quick to blame the system and too hesitant to blame the citizenry.
What’s the percentage of Americans who even vote anyway? It’s pretty bad over here in Canada. Barely more than half of us.
According to one site I found,* it’s been about 50-55% for presidential election years and less than 40% in midterm elections. Of course, that doesn’t give data on how many Americans voted for fictional characters, which is, in my opinion, the same as not voting.
*Site I found: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0781453.html
Ah, I understand now. It seems we agree after all.
I think Robin would prefer Roz to stick to the condom hats, though. That sort of thing seems easier to spin than internet sex videos.
It sort of sounds like Roz is admitting to be a slut.
Roz probably doesn’t find anything wrong with being a slut.
She’s no more of a slut than Joe is.
I find this amusing considering I live in this state, but like Walky said
Are you an Evillian too?
I cracked up when I saw the reference to the city/my new home.
Fellow Evillites?
Has anyone else noticed Walky is remarkably calm around Dorothy? Even so far as having what passes for normal conversation when Walky is involved? That last panel…
Dorothy confronted him about it. Got it out in the open. Now Walky can act like a normal person.
That or Willis just knows when enough is enough with a running gag.
I think we’re all missing the most important part of this comic. Walky and Dorothy are talking! Without him going crazy! Yaaaaaay!
His focus is not Dorothy. His focus is on the two sisters, and whether or not to be offended.
think we’re all missing the most important part of this comic. Walky and Dorothy are talking! Without him going crazy! Yaaaaaay!
I am guessing they are talking with out him going into brain vacation mode, because he is so distracted by what is going on to realize who he is talking to.
Hey! That’s where I live! I take offense at tha– no, I’m kidding. It’s pretty much accurate.
No. The most annoying thing in Indiana is the roads. Especially US-41 as it nears E-ville.
Gasp! Roz! Such ableist language!
Walky: An avatar for voter apathy. 🙂
I forgot this comic was in Indiana – the reference to Evansville made me wonder if you had somehow created a comic where the city changed based on the geo location of the requester’s IP. Then I remembered I moved 4 years ago. It’s been a weird morning…
Robin is Baron Hill?
Do we know her party?
Yay!!!! Evansville mention!! 🙂 My honorary home and most favourite city in the world!
Same here! Weird
…yeah, screw you, Robin.
If you’re gonna be a slut, and you’re FINE with being a slut, then be prepared to take the consequences of your slutdom.
All of them, not just the ones that are fixable with either medicine or a visit to PP.
I know it’s practically expected in this day and age that we hate all politicians, but putting that aside…
What a selfish little brat. So, she’s willing to potentially destroy her older sister’s chosen career just to prove that she’s a college-aged free spirit?
Roz is easily my least favorite character right now.
Yeah, I agree. She’s worse than Mary.

BOOOBIES!!!
I have family in Evansville! W00t!
I’m from Indiana and I didn’t even know we HAD an Evansville.
I’m one of the peeps who thinks she’s a hellbound slut, only I don’t live in Indiana
Well, she’s certainly a slut.
My high school got in trouble because their theme for the game against evansville was plaid. They thought we were making fun of them for bring hicks.
