Not necessarily. You need to be both firm in your subject and an authority to keep a heated discussion like that on track and bring it to a fruitful end. The easier way out would be to tell them to shut up and do the presentation she has planned for the day. And that entails enough work already.
I don’t think movie ratings really apply all that well to online content, since really the only thing you have to worry about is your boss catching you looking at naked people. So the web is in practice way more lenient about dirty language than sex, versus television and movies, where the F-bomb and naked boobies are about the same.
I’m not sure about the current status of the rating system. I know that the “One F-bomb for a PG-13, two or more for an R” has slowly changed, for example. But, there used to be the distinction that a PG-13 relationship drama or comedy quickly became an R if that relationship was not hetro-vanilla.
I think the mongoose’s comment was rather referring to the “revealing” part than lesbianism. Since, if somebody uses “reveal” in a sentence, most people will add “boobs” in their mind and entertain themselves with the resulting image.
People’s minds do work that way, right? It’s not just me?
It goes like this:
“Reveal”
“Boobs”
“With my penis.”
“For a nickel.”
And maybe with some “perverse sexual lust” thrown in.
Not that I’ve been around here for a while or anything…
Meh, not really. It’s pretty well established in Shortpacked that Robin was a Democrat. There are a number of gay Democrats serving in the House and Senate.
The best classes are debates. No really, I just came from a class the lecturer barely had to say anything because we all raised all the points on is slides.
Also, Walky’s overcome his creep-face. I’m starting to suspect there’ll be a romance between him and Dorothy now that he’s not batshit crazy around her. Something about their placement in the first panel, and how they seem to agree, they just fit. Weird, I know.
when I was in college I took a “history of motion picture films” course and on our day to discuss documentary film making’s place in cinematic history all my instructor did was say “Michael Moore” and sit down while the class started debating each other. it was good stuff
Walky: Why do we care who banged who? Because *I* certainly don’t. Especially not whoever it was that Dorothy banged…the competition…who needs to be eliminated…
The joke is that if you don’t know what they feel like, you may think they feel like sandbags. Sources: the movies Wild Wild West and The 40 Year Old Virgin
Chest Windows can be pracital as a distractive tool so the gaze is less likely to focus on her face, thus making her harder to identify, besides, its not like she was wearing any armour.
Weak willed people just cant let it go, they pass much of their time in petty little ideological wars that forgot the basic lesson of do instead of talk. Is ironic, roz is so involved cause Joyce is attacking her belifs. Every human being needs belifs, for thinking or talking, if not then there would be no counsience
You do realize that despite multiple narrative conventions doing and talking aren’t mutually exclusive? You don’t actually have to take a vow of silence if you wanna accomplish something. Often it’s not even helpful.
Yes, I forgot you can do a lot with talking. But only if the talk is effective, is doing things with words I recall. But not every time words are effective, It depends on many things, a judge can say I am guilty in a court and I go to Jail, If he tell me the same on the street you can send him to hell (pun intended)
When people are fighting, I prefer talking over doing. Because talking-fighting is yelling, and doing-fighting is assault with intent to do bodily harm.
actually it was Roz who attacked Joyce’s beleifs. Joyce was expressing concern for Joe’s soul (misguided and unsolicited though it was)… it was Roz who entered the conversation and attacked Joyce beleifs by calling it “Superstitious, fear-mongering garbage”.
I have to side with Joyce for the moment, not because I agree with her beliefs, but because she doesn’t seem to be actively and aggressively pushing them on others like Roz is. Roz’s primary reaction to Joyce is hostility, which makes Joyce understandably defensive.
Now, if Roz had said “I accept your views and the consequences are mine to take, if the exist,” and Joyce still kept being holier-than-thou, then I’d be siding with Roz. As it stands though, Roz is being the oppressive one at the moment, not Joyce.
Yet Joyce was the first to throw stones by screaming “Pre-marital hanky-panky” in Joe’s face. That IS being judgmental, and thus pushing her belief system on others.
As with the typical busy-body, Joyce claims she’s doing it for your own good, “I’m warning about the consequences of your actions.” With Joyce, she might actually be sincere, but it would not necessarily look like it to third party observers who aren’t familiar with her, and so they might think she’s meddling in someone else’s business.
I dunno, that scene seems more like it’s played for laughs. Still, Joyce is this sheltered individual who is still getting used to the notion that other people may have different viewpoints, whereas Roz believes herself to be a realistic person but still interjected when she heard something she didn’t like. Joe, on the other hand, made it more like water off a duck’s back and just took it all in stride.
Joyce’s actions are somewhat defensible, Roz’s are not, regardless of how you sliced it.
Good point. It’s a shame this argument is going to have to get cut short, because I’d like to watch these two go at it for another month. I’d be curious to see if Mr. Willis could keep that entertaining and true to both characters without favouring either.
(How would we know he succeeded? Easy! People would argue he’d favoured both!)
how is Roz pushing her beliefs on people? She made a video of herself having sex with a willing partner who had no issue with it being put online. Other people found it and made a big deal out of it because of who her sister was. Now the media is making a bigger deal out of it. At worst, Roz is just watching the snowball getting bigger hoping to bring more attention to sexual freedom issues.
Joyce, however, saw Joe and took the oppertunity to “warn” him that he was defiling himself because of what he chose to do. Loudly, publically and in Roz’s full earshot, thereby implying that she was also defiled. If Joyce had talked to Joe privately rather that verbal stoning him with premarital hanky panky it’d be one thing but she’s publically shaming him and Roz with little or no provocation.
I don’t think any of the three of them are 100% in the right here. Joyce should have kept her mouth shut (at least until she could speak in private with Joe)… Joe had reason to get defensive but throwing personal insults around, even in defense, is not cool. Roz is the one that really bothers me here though, because even though Joyce was out of line, Roz responded to someone basically saying “you’ve done something wrong” by trashing their spiritual beliefs completely and thats a pretty sh!tty thing to do no matter what the circumstance.
2. Joe does not care if a tape of him having sex is put online.
3. Roz put a tape of them having sex online.
4. Roz did not ask for his consent to put said tape of them having sex online, as his reaction to this revelation is one of surprise.
The point of sexual liberation is equality. Regardless of the whole positions reversed thing, and who would be attacking who, the truth is that Roz is actually in some very real legal jeopardy for what she has done. Personally, I’m somewhat neutral on that fact as I personally invoke what think is very likely a real feature of the legal system in the Walkyverse, the Joe clause, that being the statistical certainty that Joe will eventually have his name, and the words “public” and “sex” end up in a byline, probably before he is 30.
However, outside of the realm of hypocrisy, Roz is in no position to be attacking Joyce as she is. The fact is that Joyce, whether right or wrong, whether offensively or inoffensively, was having a conversation/altercation with Joe that Roz was not part of. Socially speaking, intervention would be acceptable if her intention was to cool things down, but it wasn’t. It wasn’t even about the victim of what could be perceived as the aggression, Joe. She intervened so she could unload her aggression on Joyce. That is interrupting. That is rude. And that is socially indefensible. By measure of words alone, she and Joyce are being equally asinine. But Roz is also being exceedingly impolite, and thus retains the title of Champeen.
Joyce started this argument by shouting in Joe’s face and then continuing on in trying to shove her beliefs down his throat. You don’t really get much more actively and aggressively pushy about your beliefs than that, without resorting to physical violence.
Curiously, both of the people who were doing the banging are participating in the discussion. (If you count what Joe’s doing as participating, anyway.) The only person who is minding somebody else’s business is Joyce.
i agree in theory… but the video was not put on the web with the intent to stay just between Roz and Joe. Attention was being asked for and attention has been given.
if it was put on the internet I think attention was desired. no one creates something and makes it accessible to millions of people and says “meh, I wouldn’t mind if someone saw this”. no, I think the attention was clearly asked for in this scenario.
That is the difference between expecting and asking for though, isn’t it? If I said I’m for gay marriage I would expect homophobic backlash but I wouldn’t ask for it.
Just because the video went public, doesn’t mean that Joyce has any right to obnoxiously judge them by her narrow-view religious beliefs, loudly in the middle of a busy classroom.
Heh. Joyce, you may be talking about consequences…But Roz, with her active promotion of safe sex measures, is the one actually warning people about them.
Whereas Joyce is (unintentionally) MAKING UP consequences.
I’m completely Walky in this situaton I honestly couldn’t give two shits about the entire situation and just want to grab som Mcnuggets and get back to my games
In fact Roz is angry for the same reason Joyce is, someone is messing with her belifs. Really, would you care if the christian girl besides you think sex is “bad”? pointless I say, she is not sending a message of “evil”, she is just being noisy. I dont get the point, Is Joyce problem if she belives, she isnt going to make Joe feel bad. Religious people only afect eachother with their prayers, If someone on the street told me Zeus is going to kill me for my sins I wont start an argument. As I said, this is a pointless fight of Ideologies and Belifs.
Okay, I’ll try to take this slow. Joyce STARTED this argument. All by herself. Without any help at all. And sustained it all by her lonesome for another comic and a half (since Joe wasn’t interested in a shouting match) before Roz took offense and joined in.
You seem to think that the religious Joyce was just politely minding her own business when atheist Roz suddenly attacked her. This is simply not true.
And, Joyce was TRYING to make Joe feel bad. She was trying to control his behavior through guilt/threats. (This is actually a pretty common tactic of many religions). She was indeed sending a message of “evil”, in that she was attacking and criticizing him for his completely harmless-to-others behavior. The last time she had this ‘discussion’ with him, she did this by punching him repeatedly in the face. This affected him. Despite not being a prayer.
You seem to be committed to the idea that religious people are always polite and nice and the mean atheist people should just stop being so mean by disagreeing with them. This perspective is highly unrealistic in real life, but trying to describe Joyce and Roz’s argument this way borders on the delusional.
Oh my, I know atheist that would not do what Roz did (argue). And Joe deserved those punches. And look, Joyce was Trying, I am now trying to kill you with my mind (joking) are you going to sue me for attempting murder?
And well I dont know if she was sending a message of evil, maybe a message of guilt and intolerance, my dad said “kill comunists” all the time, I dont think he was doing no evil. Some time people that sends messages of kindness do more evil than good. Really I dont think any message is pure, but that is pretty irrelevant as institution are the ones that direct the messages.
Religious people are rarely polite to atheist, but atheist like Roz are delusional. Is the difference of a real Atheist (the question of god is nonsense, and thus not valid or viable) like Dorothy or a beliver of atheism (the ones that fight religious people as the christians fought the moros)
Okay. First off, for both of you, we have no evidence at all that Roz is atheist. In fact, there is more evidence to suggest she believes in 1. A female diety or at least the possibility of a female diety and 2. Multiple gods/goddesses as pointed out yesterday when she said “For gods’ sakes”
Now, as for Joyce, she is not trying to make Joe feel bad. Is it possible it will happen as a side-affect? Yes, most likely, unfortunately. But Joyce’s main thing is that she’s concerned for him. Now, obviously she’s not doing it in the right way. At the very least she should have asked to talk to him in private, shared her opinion, and left it at that. So Joyce isn’t perfect, but we can at least see she’s trying. She just needs to learn not to be so aggressive. On that note, she is not directly attacking Joe’s beliefs. Joyce has not gone in way shape or form “What you believe is stupid” or anything like that. Again, she has gone the wrong way with how to handle the situation, but she never directly attacked any of Joe’s beliefs.
Now, Roz, on the other hand, off the bat attacked Joyce’s beliefs, which put her in the wrong than Joyce. However, we can all see why Roz would naturally be upset at this. It directly conflicts with what she believes AND it involves the video she made. So, no, she should not have attacked Joyce’s beleifs like that, but she does have a right to get involved in the arguement.
In short, what I’m trying to clarify for Gerardo begbert2, is that no, Joyce didn’t attack anyone, but yes, she went about potentially the worse possible way to try and help Joe. And yes, Roz is the more aggressive by attacking Joyce’s beliefs, but we can see why she became upset enough to do that. In other words, both ladies have made one mistake or another, but shouldn’t have their character judged based on this current arguement between them.
G.S. Mercs How did I miss that! you are right, that could explain everything. But still, is a fight of fixed ideologies, so this is not going to end well.
It’s because deep-down the religious person can’t stop themself from realizing that their beliefs are the most flimsily-supported of jokes. This lack of real faith causes them to feel their worldviews being threatened by the merest hint of evidence that their beliefs are false.
If a person has ACTUAL certainty in their religious beliefs, then they do not feel threatened by the existence of unbelievers and can casually and calmly shrug such things off – much the same way right-thinking people shrug off flat-earthers. These sorts of religious people do exist – but they make a lot less noise than the insecure scared ones.
I readily concede that there is no evidence that Roz is an atheist, and I actually considered adding a follow-up post to make this clear. However, I think there’s reason to think that Gerardo thinks (thought) that she is an atheist, and every time I called Roz an atheist it was in the context of how I think Gerardo sees the world: the religious vs. Roz.
And you do not start a conversation by going up and shouting “PRE-MARITAL HANKY-PANKY!!!!” in somebody’s face if you’re actually concerned about their welfare. You do it if you’re outraged at them, as criticism. That is, an attack. This business about being concerned for his soul is a bullshit post-facto justification, whether Joyce says it or whether anyone else does.
Joyce started this fight. And not because she was gently advising Joe that by her theology (which she knows he doesn’t share) he’s imperilling his soul. She was doing it because she was offended and outraged by his behavior. Period.
Very, very few of my characters are atheists, or, at least, self-acknowledged atheists. Dorothy’s likely the only one in this strip of consequence. The vast majority of people in Indiana believe in God, even if that’s not an important belief to them. For a lot of people, it’s not something they think about much. Most of my cast were regular church goers before college, and they’re fine with that. (For some reason in college that drops off a bit, but most of them will be back once they have kids and jobs and houses.)
Joe deserved to be repeatedly punched because he looked at a waitress? What? I’m sorry, but he most certainly did not deserve that treatment.
Joyce could have called him on it, criticised, but that level of physical violence was excessive and undeserved. I fail to see how you could think he earnt that.
All of them. Twice. By the way, I’ve told all your alternate universe versions of yourself what you get up to when you think noone’s looking and they’re all very disappointed.
It’s called the Rule of Funny.
Joe getting punched in the face repeatedly by a swish-haired sadist and a little christian girl is funny, therefore it’s okay and that was your cue to start laughing uncontrollably DO IT NOW GIVE IN GIVE IIIIIIIIN
You’re confusing Rule of Funny with retroactive continuity. That we laughed does not mean that it didn’t happen, nor does it mean that Joyce is not now someone who does such things with all the implications that follow.
Funny as hell, but let’s not pretend like she didn’t enlist a man to protect her from her date, act completely cool when the man started getting far more violent than the job called for, and the joined in for a full blown beatdown once the guy finally stepped out of line for half a second in a remarkably innocuous fashion that wouldn’t be more than a mild faux-pas to anyone else. It was hilarious, but it also happened.
And thus I prove every human have belifs, the only option would be a complete nihilist. As a teacher told me, the universe is a caos of completly logical facts, It existed well before sCientists, We are only here because for some ilogical reason we want to know how the hell It works. So if Science only put facts on the table the human mind is the one that construct truths, Althusser thought something like this.
He paused and seemed to take a different tack. “Do you believe in God?”
“Tehlu? After a fashion.”
“Not good enough. Do you believe in your parents?”
I gave a little smile. “Sometimes. I can’t see them right now.”
He snorted and unhooked the slapstick he used to goad Alpha and Beta when they were being lazy. “Do you believe in this, E’lir?” He only called me E’lir when he thought I was being especially willfully obstinate. He held out the stick for my inspection.
There was a malicious glitter in his eye. I decided not to tempt fate. “Yes.”
“Good.” He slapped the side of the wagon with it, producing a sharp crack. One of Alpha’s ears pivoted around at the noise, uncertain as to whether or not it was directed at her. “That’s the sort of belief I want. It’s called Alar: riding-crop belief.”
Um, no. I am not here because I want to know how everything works. I may chose that as my purpose, but I didn’t come to be with that purpose in mind any more than the Earth appeared so I’d have some place to be.
If the alternative to belief is complete nihilism, and all humans must have beliefs, how do you explain people who don’t accept that there is any objective moral truth — a.k.a. nihilists?
Oh my dear man, belifes are choices we made, moral, ethics, etc. I dont accept an objective moral truth, Kant is too much dead to me. But nihilist dont belive in anything cause they are trapped in Münchhausen’s Trilema. Everything sygnifies, but not everthing have sense. Every point of view depends on faith, faith gives sense, facts (such as pain) only sygnify. Belifes always depend on both.
Faith doesnt mean religion.
There is another choice, we could base all our decitions in unproseced facts, like a computer, neglecting our presonalities.
In fact I think we all agree here, but the issue is that everyone are choicing sides pretty much on ideological terms.
I dont see how is that you disagree with my statements. The only reason could be that you dislike the word “Faith”, but in definition there is an arbitrary reason for what we belive what we belive, that means that there is nothing objetive in our belifes. Oh but if I keep this I would end quoting Sarte.
We figth acording to our belifs, that is why they are so important. And we can change them. I am apealing at your reason to make my point.
Joyce and Roz both are wrong and Dorothy is more calmed, Walky (who dont care about all this words we write) knows by intuition that this is pointless. My main point against Roz is the comparation between the two types of atheism
Well, I think I understand better other’s people reasoning, as they dont amaze me. I just cant belive how much determination there is in the responses, as you really dont see my point, either there is a loop hole (assuming Roz was an atheist was wrong, how did I missed that?) or I am right.
Gotta love Leslie. I can’t wait for her to weigh in on this.
And Wow, Walky just said the smartest thing in the room… >looks around< I was expecting hell to have frozen over… 😛 Seriously, WHY should anyone care about who banged who except the two people who did the banging?
Joe cares about who he bangs (if only for the scorecard), but what he doesn’t care about is Joyce’s midaeval attitudes about sex, and he cares even less about her opinion of him (since he’s no longer interested in Joeing her). Which allows him to sit back, mock her, and enjoy the ride.
Oh he cares about Joyce’s medieval attitude about sex… because according to pornos, she will suddenly be so overwhelmed that she and Roz will suddenly be having raunchy sex-times!
I’m starting to really hate Joyce, which makes me feel bad because I love Joyce. The consequences of Roz’s actions are that Joyce complains that she doesn’t see the consequences.
Well, Joyce will doubtlessly grow and become more mature in her attitudes and beliefs, and will almost certainly find herself ratcheting the theism down to a much less extreme level and (similarly almost certainly) find that she really does enjoy premarital hanky-panky after all. So just wait a while and see.
Then you’d best hope that Willis has her mature in reader-time, and not her-time: it took her months (her-time) to mature in the other continuity. In this continuity it takes considerably more than a day our-time for a day her-time to pass…
I just want to addendum that I don’t mean this as a criticism – regardless of how the comic plays out. Having characters develop astonishingly fast their-time if it helps the story out is a common and acceptable break from reality, and contrariwise I’m also cool with a sprawling and epic tale delivered over years. Either way can be (and likely would be) excellent. (If possibly a bit harrowing for Mr. Hartley.)
Good move Leslie: When in a room of arguing people, it’s a good personal safety step to behind a desk. Especially if you might have to duck mis-aimed thrown objects. I’m not sure if Joyce will hear about this in her education classes, except as a practical tip in the “classroom management” sessions.
… i glanced at this comic before reading the previous one, and thought that Roz was referring to Joyce being a virgin in the “intact flower” statement, not her SOUL being intact…
although, the way Joyce described it, in a way it’s the same thing.
Leslie: *gets popcorn*
*takes down notes*
*takes out a camcorder and started recording*
*asks to borrow Plasma’s notes*
Please turn in your notes to my TA at the end of the class.
*scribbles fake notes*
*Draws Dinosaur eating TA*
*draws a dinosaur eating the faculty*
Draws Joyce and Roz making out with dinosaur
*Draws people drawing dinosaurs eating people*
*draws people drawing dinosaurs eating people who draws people making out with dinosaurs.*
*with his penis
*for a nickel.
I think she’d want to see the make out as well.
I think Leslie should have a more smug face in the last panel.
Also lol virgin walky
Why smug? It’s not like she engerneered it or anything. She does looks pretty content with the sitch thou.
“engineered”
Maybe she bribed Roz to make a sex tape with Joe and then post it to cause a political scandal so that she could set up a good class discussion.
I don’t think Roz needs to be bribed to do something like that. Miss Bean might have inspired the idea in her, though.
leslie did it for daisy!
*makes a joke involving flowers*
She would be so fired if she bribed a student to have sex on camera. I can’t even count how many ethics violations that would be.
Teachers feel a bit proud whenever students are discussing their subject.
maybe she did engineer is?!? all that talk about favorite movies and such was meant to guide the young students into making their own movies! its quite genius really
Hey, ease up on the virgins. He’s reacting more maturely than Joyce, Roz, and Joe put together.
Think about that for a moment.
Walky is being THE MATURE ONE.
And Leslie’s reaction is why I’m studying to be a teacher. So I can pull that off
You need to choose the right subject to teach, somehow I don’t see this approach working for a maths class.
depends on how nerdy your students are.
i dont know ive seen some badass math arguments >.>
Hey, math is serious business.
i once saw two homeless guys on a train arguing over what 9 x 25 equaled. somehow they started bringing in the distances between the sun and various planets into the argument. i reached my stop too soon.
Wait, how’d they get on the train?
homeless doesn’t necessarily mean broke. but even if it did, i’ve seen countless people just hop on the train without paying. there typically aren’t people there to make sure you pay.
That sounds like it might have been worth missing a couple of stops, maybe even taking their next connection if you had time.
trust me. i always imagine what it would have been like to stay on the train.
Remember, kids, sex ed is the only class where 1+1 can equal 3 or more.
^ this statement > anything else. ever.
Well played, sir.
Sorry, sir or madam.
That ladies and gents is how a good college professor earns their pay check. * Thunderous applause*
It makes her job easier, that’s for certain.
Not necessarily. You need to be both firm in your subject and an authority to keep a heated discussion like that on track and bring it to a fruitful end. The easier way out would be to tell them to shut up and do the presentation she has planned for the day. And that entails enough work already.
You forget Leslie Rocks. 🙂
I kept it in mind. Just want to point out that going there actually makes her job harder, not easier.
Leslie, you rock.
Lively debate is what learning is all about!
Oh by the way Sluggyfreelance is Fourteen Years old today. 🙂
Man, I have two weeks left to go before my webcomics can claim the same thing!
*Cheering, Thunderous Appluase, and groupies in two weeks*
Anyone else wanna see Leslie reveal her lesbianism? Anyone?
Cuz I feel like that’d just make things all the more interesting.
What do you mean by reveal? This is a PG rated comic after all. 😀
I think its more PG-18.
PG-18? is there such a rating?
Does anyone really care?
That depends on the content.
Not likely but I just wanted to know if there was such a thing.
R
I’ve dropped the f-bomb too many times to be PG!
So M or R rating then?
I don’t think movie ratings really apply all that well to online content, since really the only thing you have to worry about is your boss catching you looking at naked people. So the web is in practice way more lenient about dirty language than sex, versus television and movies, where the F-bomb and naked boobies are about the same.
In that case, DoA has rated R dialogue and PG art.
I give a Unrated.
an
I give it a TCFS… Too Cool For School.
I am aware that this isn’t a real rating.
@macaronipterodactyl
though it most certainly should be!
And sexuality has what to do with ratings…? >_>
Sexualty is a great way to increase ratings!
I’m not sure about the current status of the rating system. I know that the “One F-bomb for a PG-13, two or more for an R” has slowly changed, for example. But, there used to be the distinction that a PG-13 relationship drama or comedy quickly became an R if that relationship was not hetro-vanilla.
I remember seeing Michael Keaton drop the F-bomb in the PG rated Beatlejuice airing on Disney’s Family channel. Good times.
Well she did make a joke about it during the first class if that’s what you mean.
Is it just me, or is DoA Leslie starting with about 5x Shortpacked!Leslie’s awesome stat?
This way, Leslie can gain a better grasp of how her students truely view gender roles and attitudes.
*Thunderous Appluase*X4
I’m so glad that I chose note-taking Leslie as my grav today.
*Sigh* Plasma Mongoose, I always have such grav-envy of you. You rock.
Danke! ^_^
I do like to photoshop my gravs, sometimes from scratch and sometimes, it fits with the topic of the day.
I still say Lez is married to Robin.
That.. would be very interesting, actually. 🙂 Especially considering how this Roz business affects her wife (if it does).
Did I miss something??? I don’t recall Leslie and Robin being married in DoA.
They aren’t. Just baseless speculation 🙂
I thought as much.
Meh, not really. It’s pretty well established in Shortpacked that Robin was a Democrat. There are a number of gay Democrats serving in the House and Senate.
I’ve actively avoided addressing which political party SP!Robin belongs to, if any.
and that is why you are smart 😀
To be fair, there are a number of gay Republicans serving in the House and Senate as well.
are there Gay Atheist Republicans?
No such thing.
maybe there are such things but they remain in the closet about their gayness and atheism for political reasons.
I’m with Walky here.
That’s a lie. In real life, I’d be with Walky. Watching a fictional version of this, I’m a little bit with Joe.
I’m with Walky in fictional life too, and when you think Walky is the rational one, something is up
you mean 100% with Joe, of course.
Not 100%. Just the tip.
for a nickel
The best classes are debates. No really, I just came from a class the lecturer barely had to say anything because we all raised all the points on is slides.
Also, Walky’s overcome his creep-face. I’m starting to suspect there’ll be a romance between him and Dorothy now that he’s not batshit crazy around her. Something about their placement in the first panel, and how they seem to agree, they just fit. Weird, I know.
Not too long ago in my school in religion class (catholic school, bleh) the teacher allowed us to have a debate about religion versus atheism.
Before then I thought everyone in my class were morons but they all raised valid points for both arguments.
I love debates it’s interesting to hear someone’s views and how they believe something different than you.
when I was in college I took a “history of motion picture films” course and on our day to discuss documentary film making’s place in cinematic history all my instructor did was say “Michael Moore” and sit down while the class started debating each other. it was good stuff
Joe is not making this better. Oh well, at least Leslie being awesome in a crisis is something to behold.
Damn Walky looks handsome in that panel!
I mean.. um… hamdingers
They got his good side. 😉
And now that she’s interrupted it, it’ll probably die out.
*sigh*
Roz and Joyce? Shutting up? I think you’ve fundamentally misunderstood their character 🙂
I doubt they even noticed Leslie as they are both having a heated debate.
I was going to make a “hot (sexy)” pun, but then I remembered I have dignity. Oh well 😉
I love Leslie.
Walky: Why do we care who banged who? Because *I* certainly don’t. Especially not whoever it was that Dorothy banged…the competition…who needs to be eliminated…
“She will be mine! All mine!”
I’m so glad walky didn’t freak out, that’d be sooooo creepy.
Creepy isn’t in his character. It make sense that he just wants the subject to change before he has to lie about the feel of sandbags.
Sandbags? Is that what they kids are calling them these days? *lights tobacco pipe*
In my day, we called them all sorts of things but not sandbags… funbags maybe, but NOT sandbags.
In my experience, you call them whatever the hell your girlfriend tells you to call them. Anything else is just asking for trouble 🙂
The joke is that if you don’t know what they feel like, you may think they feel like sandbags. Sources: the movies Wild Wild West and The 40 Year Old Virgin
Will Smith’s WWW? I need to rewatch that.
You never need to rewatch that, and yet you always do. Its’ pull is inexorable.
The argument is now escalated. Now we wait.
Leslie is full of win.
Leslie looks pleased as punch.
Leslie ~ The most awesome beaning in the known universe.
Very punny… 😛
I see what you did there. And what *you* did there. Very clever.
Hooray for symmetry!
Ooo, is it object lesson time?
We can only hope. And maybe with bonus fanservice. 😀
Amazigirl will jump in to intervene… and MAYBE with a new chest window costume?!?
That kind of goes against everything that Amazi-Girl’s costume should be, given it was originally meant to be practical.
Chest Windows can be pracital as a distractive tool so the gaze is less likely to focus on her face, thus making her harder to identify, besides, its not like she was wearing any armour.
Lol. “Distraction Tool” is the best excuse for every ridiculous wardrobe.
Usually. There are times a gelatin fight can be cathartic for all involved.
What do you mean, do instead of talk?
actually it was Roz who attacked Joyce’s beleifs. Joyce was expressing concern for Joe’s soul (misguided and unsolicited though it was)… it was Roz who entered the conversation and attacked Joyce beleifs by calling it “Superstitious, fear-mongering garbage”.
Please tell me how losing a piece of your soul when you have non-procreative sex isn’t an attack on Roz’s own beliefs.
she’s so willing to let the students do whatever that she reminds me of my most favorite English teacher at a CC i attended briefly
This very impressive.
You do realize there are four sides in this agurement?
He took it all in stride, but also threw in that little “I’d have to be insane to fuck you” which is about as insulting as Joe gets really.
Except Roz is one of the people Joyce is judging here. Did you forget just _who_ Joe had “premarital hanky-panky” _with_?
We know four things:
1. Joe does not care if he is taped having sex.
Please read this comic: http://www.dumbingofage.com/2011/comic/book-1/05-media-rumble/interview-2/
Joyce started this argument by shouting in Joe’s face and then continuing on in trying to shove her beliefs down his throat. You don’t really get much more actively and aggressively pushy about your beliefs than that, without resorting to physical violence.
Which is what happened last time.
“she doesn’t seem to be actively and aggressively pushing them on others”
Did you even READ yesterday’s strip.
…lipstick? Is she trying to make a point?
Achem.
“What are consequences?”
“Oh, nevermind.”
Or, rather, “You make babies. Here’s yours.”
Waaalky. Who banged WHOM. Someone needs an English class.
It burned me inside a bit to write it this way, but Walky’s the last person in the world to speak proper yet unintuitive English.
In fairness, Teowulf was correcting Walky, not his writer.
This is indeed the case. I figured Walky would not be the type to make use of proper grammar.
As I said yesterday:
Best. Class. Ever.
Joe, dude, you’re rushing things. You want a cat fight first. Grappling, torn clothes…
I love this universe’s Leslie SOOOO much. If I were to lover her any more I would have to be female. (Which I am not.)
ha! “Lover her”
Who ordered the Freudian slip?
Now this is getting good.
Why are my comments does not appear?
Man, this is like a Reverse The Todd.
I agree with Walky. It’s the business of whoever was doing the banging, not anyone else.
Curiously, both of the people who were doing the banging are participating in the discussion. (If you count what Joe’s doing as participating, anyway.) The only person who is minding somebody else’s business is Joyce.
They uh, kind of made it everyone’s business by putting out a public video. Fair game.
not really. is it anyone else’s business if a child argues with its parent about getting candy at the grocery store?
it’s annoying to anyone within earshot, sure, but it’s only the business of those two people.
i agree in theory… but the video was not put on the web with the intent to stay just between Roz and Joe. Attention was being asked for and attention has been given.
Attention has only been permitted, not requested. Judgment was not listed on either certificate.
if it was put on the internet I think attention was desired. no one creates something and makes it accessible to millions of people and says “meh, I wouldn’t mind if someone saw this”. no, I think the attention was clearly asked for in this scenario.
Oh, Roz, I like you.
If you weren’t a fictional character and/or in another state and country, we would hang out.
The RSS version is with weird colours ( http://www.dumbingofage.com/comics-rss/2011-08-25-continue.png )
Ooh. I like Leslie!
And she likes a good catfight.
And this is the moment where I notice my avatar… There is a conspiracy of some form.
Hey, whenever I seem to get preachy and pro-Roz, my gravatar turns into Roz. Go figure.
Let’s hear it for Leslieeeeeee!!!!!! XDXDXDXDXD
Hello?
Looks like I’m back in business.
You’re outside looking in?
No, this afternoon(local time), I tried to comment but for some bizzare reason it doesn’t show.
Do these people have more than two classes?
No.
Or they do, but if every minute of all their days were shown, we’d’ve still been in day one of this comic come 2016.
The latest Oglaf story has the perfect solution to Roz and Joyce’s differences.
(It’s pretty NSFW. As you may have figured.)
-> http://oglaf.com/roguearsenal/
Here’ws mud in your eye! 😛
Leslie you are their only hope.
I never understood why challenging someone’s religious or spiritual beliefs was so taboo simply because they were religious or spiritual.
In other words, no, Roz is not an atheist.
I do have to say, even if it’s just for realism (is it?) you don’t just make most/all your characters share your beliefs.
Joe deserved to be repeatedly punched because he looked at a waitress? What? I’m sorry, but he most certainly did not deserve that treatment.
Joyce could have called him on it, criticised, but that level of physical violence was excessive and undeserved. I fail to see how you could think he earnt that.
Is called karma, Joyce was just a tool
So Joyce’s use of force is justified? I’m sorry but no.
But Karma is Hindu!
*Runs in circles*
It’s called assault. In no world is checking out a waitress grounds for a pummelling.
Well that’s a bold claim. How thoroughly have you examined the multiverse?
All of them. Twice. By the way, I’ve told all your alternate universe versions of yourself what you get up to when you think noone’s looking and they’re all very disappointed.
Hmm… the notion that I would be the most disappointing of all possible me’s rings true. You check out.
Exactly! It was hilarious, but that doesn’t mean Joyce didn’t do that.
Eureka! Thats what Roz has and Dorothy dony, Resentment. Of course resentment can be good or evil depending on the side you are
so no one gets mad Joyce is not better than Roz
Lots of different types of belief. Faith is belief, but belief isn’t always faith.
“I dont see how is that you disagree with my statements. The only reason…”
You’re not making any points you want to with statements like these.
Well, I think I understand better other’s people reasoning, as they dont amaze me. I just cant belive how much determination there is in the responses, as you really dont see my point, either there is a loop hole (assuming Roz was an atheist was wrong, how did I missed that?) or I am right.
PD: My teacher was speaking about phycisists
Gotta love Leslie. I can’t wait for her to weigh in on this.
And Wow, Walky just said the smartest thing in the room… >looks around< I was expecting hell to have frozen over… 😛 Seriously, WHY should anyone care about who banged who except the two people who did the banging?
and Joe sure does not care.
I know it’s probably been said, but you just have to love Leslie’s approach to teaching.
I know, I know. But when I read the other Universe, I was reading hundreds a day so she matured a lot quicker for me. I’m not used to this pace!
Then you’d best hope that Willis has her mature in reader-time, and not her-time: it took her months (her-time) to mature in the other continuity. In this continuity it takes considerably more than a day our-time for a day her-time to pass…
It’s like webcomics Narnia in here.
Hartley.)
Leslie is so awesome, haha.
Good move Leslie: When in a room of arguing people, it’s a good personal safety step to behind a desk. Especially if you might have to duck mis-aimed thrown objects. I’m not sure if Joyce will hear about this in her education classes, except as a practical tip in the “classroom management” sessions.
Nobody noticed the implication that Leslie is *used* to hearing arguments like this within the first week of class.
Is it really that surprising? I’d be more surprised if it didn’t happen.
Leslie and Joe: the winners on today’s strip. 😀
-airfox
Wow, this is officially one of the most commented comics I’ve ever seen… You’ve officially outdone yourself, Mr. Willis.
… i glanced at this comic before reading the previous one, and thought that Roz was referring to Joyce being a virgin in the “intact flower” statement, not her SOUL being intact…
although, the way Joyce described it, in a way it’s the same thing.
Leslie is one hell of a mediator.
Maaaaaan, I wish my college years were as exciting as this!
Shit, I’m agreeing with Joyce!
