Hey, maybe Amber and Dorothy can become, like, the Sub-Zero and Scorpion of this web comic! You know, they start out as palette-swaps of each other (except that one of them can breathe fire from her fleshless skull), only over time they start diverging, beginning when one shows up without a mask or shirt in a sequel. But then when they both come back they really do look different for a while, and one of them even becomes the Shredder kinda, only to go back to being palette swaps in the most recent instlalment, except one of them’s a robot now.
Not to complain, this is awesome, but other than a desire not to see Faz shirtless, why is this not the other way around, given that Amber actually has a sibling.
I vote yes to this as well, but I feel it is important, nay vital to stress a vote for these two characters to disrobe is NOT a vote against any other characters disrobing, either now or at some future point.
It was a surprise to *me* if that helps, I guess I was just to detail oriented to see the big picture similarities (also, I think a good amount of people just jumped on the Dorothy/Amber bandwagon thinking it was a joke)
Actually, the real reason is because I prefer drawing Amber this way. When I first started drawing Roomies! nearly 14 years ago, I made a mistake in drawing Sal looking like the way I drew her in high school, expecting she’d slowly grow into the way I drew her currently. That was dumb, because I hated that old way and I hated having to draw her that way in flashbacks. So, no, Amber just always looked like she does now. Mostly. She’s too young to have been alive when giant dinner-plate-sized glasses were in vogue anyway.
Thanks for clearing that up. And I suppose the old glasses would be too outdated, but her long hair could still be unfashionably nerdy of her. While Amber and Dorothy’s likeness is uncanny and would be confusing if this strip was in black and white I can tell them apart since Amber’s hair hangs in front of her ears while Dorothy’s hair flips to the right.
I believe one of the reasons, Willis updated Amber’s look was to do with her been related to Faz and he really wanted us to get out the brain bleach when he posted this in SP!
Probably more to do with wheelchair accessibility in real life. Anytime I find extra-wide doors, they’re always to accommodate those slow go-karts seniors ride.
If it counts for anything, even though I saw the resemblances just fine… It never really clicked until Joe pointed it out just now. I knew Amber and Dorothy had many similar features, yet my brain never made the connection of “Danny’s gunning for a girl who looks a lot like his ex.”
When Danny first noticed Amber’s resemblance to someone he knows, he was first confused, then, when realizing that someone was the girl that had dumped him the evening before, suddenly very uneasy. (He looked something between disgusted to crept out, but it probably just were the hurtful memories re-emerging.)
I think what attracted Amber and Danny towards each other later on were common interests and interests they found interesting in the respective other (computer science incl. stuff from its good ‘old’ times like BBSs, gaming, my little ponies), shared opinions (‘The CS intro course sucks!’) and general geekiness without too much creepiness (in their own eyes, at least.)
Off course, that doesn’t have to mean there isn’t a certain type of FAAAAAAAAAAACE that Danny goes after, whether consciously or not. But I doubt he chose Amber as an as-similar-as-possible replacement, more that just both Dorothy’s and Amber’s look fit a pattern he might like.
When Danny first noticed Amber’s resemblance to someone he knows, he was first confused, then, when realizing that someone was the girl that had dumped him the evening before, suddenly very uneasy.
I’m pretty sure the person that Amber “resembled” was Amazi-Girl. You know, for obvious reasons.
*sigh* I didn’t see this coming either, because I keep on thinking that Sal was Danny’s ex. Only remembered when I read the comments. Shows how much I keep on associating the old comics. >.<
I didn’t notice the few and extremely superficial similarities between Amber and Dorothy until people started calling them palette-swapped versions of each other (which definitely isn’t true). They’re roughly the same size, they both have a rounded hairstyle of same length, and they both have glasses. That’s it. If they dyed their hair the same color and put on the same clothes, the difference would still be obvious.
To be fair its not a cockblock yet. Neither girl realized what Joe is talking about yet.
But either way, Joe wanted to include Dorothy on his sex-up list less then five seconds after Danny and her broke up and has already made a sex tape in the same room as a sleeping Danny, with a sequel planned that very night. Honestly, cockblocking doesn’t seem that shocking for Joe.
danny in the last panel almost escaped me. its not creepy if its a twin fetish joe (well…okay maybe). i want them to bump into billie soon. that will be really awkward for them
I’ll be honest… they really don’t seem to be that similar to me. The only things they have in common are their basic hair shapes and their positions (looking down at a phone, which is a very common position these days).
Beyond that, though, they seem very, very different. Let’s see:
-Different nose shapes
-One has hair swept behind ears, other does not
-Different face shapes (Amber has a pointed chin)
-Glasses are different shapes
-Different heights
And, at the risk of putting too much emphasis on detail, they also seem to have arms that are different widths, necks with different lengths, and different shaped breasts. And, of course, they have different hair colors. Given that this is a cartoon, which can only have so much detail included, that is a very long list of differences.
I mean, maybe it’s just me, but they seem to be very distinct characters. I’m seeing hardly any similarity at all.
I agree – to me they look “nothing alike” either. On the other hand, I can see why Joe would take one look and say “replacement!”: since outside sprite comments people aren’t actual palette swaps of one another, the fact that Danny manage to so quickly find another girl that did fit the ‘short, short-haired, bespectacled’ mold is still close enough to raise eyebrows.
my younger brother has had two girlfriends. both are hispanic and older than he is. they look completely different, but we can still say he has a thing for older, hispanic women.
can’t we make similar comments towards danny? he has a thing for short, glasses-wearing women with short hair. i know people are saying the dorothy and amber are a little more identical than that, but they are drawn in a simple style. subtle details are easy to overlook, especially when the two characters aren’t shown next to each other.
Before I thought they were really similar, but now that they’re actually standing next to each other, they aren’t. They’re still similar, but it’s easier to see the differences.
Dude, the way they look alike is like me and my sister. She’s a little over 3 years older than me, and I’m a blond and she’s a brunette, but we still get mistaken for twins.
I can’t tell if Danny’s FAAAAAAAAAAAAACE says, “Somebody get me out of here ASAP!” or “I really need to get to the bathroom”. Maybe he’s trying to say, “I just went to the bathroom, so somebody get me out of here ASAP!” Jeez, does the sight of Dorothy still freak him out so much?
Oh… I’ve had this happen to me. And I was the ‘new’ one. So, either everyone’s going to think it’s funny, or we go the realistic route… Incredibly awkward, and Amber walks away with a Dorothy-complex. ((Danny-complex? Not sure how you would name it…))
Okay, I’m starting to remember that there was a comic in which some guy goes “Faaaace?”, but I can’t remember for the life of me which one it is or which of the comics it’s from. Can somebody help me out here?
Personally, they’ve always looked a lot alike to me. I see all the differences that everyone else has pointed out, but the similar heights, glasses, and especially the giant circular balls of hair overwhelm the differences in my eyes.
Okay, cool. I’m re-reading my way through the archive, and I was wondering when/if this would happen. It’s harder to tell how different they look in just the banner (which, amusingly, is the full-cast one for me right now) – and looking at it, Dorothy looks like the only character who has a round chin.
Couple wigs, heels (for Amber), change of clothes and a little makeup, and they could cosplay as each other.
Yeah, what? =D
Should I assume your Jen Aside is similar to Jenna’s Side?
Genocide methinks?
I’m seeing double here!
Four Dorothys!
They look nothing alike. Except for the similar features.
Or is it four Ambers?
DoA gets Meta.
And thus, a million foursome fanfics were launched.
Well, they are gay in this comic, so it won’t be much of a stretch.
Wait they’re gay? I thought that was Joyce and Walky.
Good thing we have Ethan. Good ol’ bastion of heterosexuality.
For once, Joe is right.
So does that man Dorothy and Faz are related?
Well, I can stop reading the comments now. They can’t get better then this one.
Well played.
Just gotta scroll down, mate.
OT, but i had to show some love for the spring-heeled jack icon.
Dotty, Amber and Faz related?
http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2011/5/30/c5ae3e1b-e88b-4470-a71d-8e7bdcce41f0.jpg
… Are… Are you the devil?
So you noticed the hellish red background of all my various Gravatars eh? >:D
Dear God, I’m ashamed to admit that Faz looks damn hot like that.
Scary concept isn’t it ^_^
That is a little odd. I’ve kind of noticed it before, but seeing it like this is totally different

Your comment is a little frightening in its depth and enthusiasm.
Hastily and poorly-edited together with no regard for artistic integrity!

(if it turns out this kind of joke is a no-no, I’ll get rid of the link)
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/836/amberkombat.png/
took the joke one step further, hope you don’t mind.
Not to complain, this is awesome, but other than a desire not to see Faz shirtless, why is this not the other way around, given that Amber actually has a sibling.
I’m laughing too hard to comment. This is not good at two in the morning.
BWAHA!
What hath science wrought!!!
MANY TERRIBLE THINGS!
Happy to help.
I vote Amber loses the shirt. All in favor say “Faaaace”.
Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!
Faaaaaaaaaace!
Who votes for both Amber & Dotty losing their shirts?
I do.
Oh noes, Joyce has perverse sexual lust!
For Twilight no less.
I vote yes to this as well, but I feel it is important, nay vital to stress a vote for these two characters to disrobe is NOT a vote against any other characters disrobing, either now or at some future point.
Well, someone was right about Danny going for girls in glasses. Not that it’s anything wrong about it.
It’s a very specific fetish.
With his penis.
Just goes to show that Danny has class
Nickel plated class.
Faaace…
Huh. Here I thought Willis was gonna ignore all those comments.
Ah well. I’ll enjoy it.
Ignore nothing, this was planned since before the comic started. (Ask Dave McGuire.)
will he answer for a nickel?
Man, I figured you’d been waiting to spring this one for a while, but I didn’t figure it was that long.
Bravo, dude, bravo.
I’m a little sad that everyone actually noticed it. I hoped it’d be a surprise to some. They were similar, but not THAT similar. Oh well.
Part of it’s just that Dorothy hasn’t been around in forever and most people came over from reading Shortpacked!
Wasn’t there another strip where Dorothy and Amber stood directly next to each other in one panel? That couldn’t have helped.
It was a surprise to *me* if that helps, I guess I was just to detail oriented to see the big picture similarities (also, I think a good amount of people just jumped on the Dorothy/Amber bandwagon thinking it was a joke)
So there’s a reason that Amber looks like she does now instead of pre-makeover. Interesting.
Actually, the real reason is because I prefer drawing Amber this way. When I first started drawing Roomies! nearly 14 years ago, I made a mistake in drawing Sal looking like the way I drew her in high school, expecting she’d slowly grow into the way I drew her currently. She’s too young to have been alive when giant dinner-plate-sized glasses were in vogue anyway.
I don’t believe that I have ever seen dinner-plate glasses outside of anime, manga, cartoons & comics.
http://imageshack.us/f/87/vickyvalehb7.jpg/ <–voila
Oh those sort, they are bigger than the glasses you see these days but calling them dinner-plates?
Teacup Saucer size maybe. ^_^
It’s a figure of speech.
… unless you were joking. In that case, carry on, nothing to see here…
Not exactly joking, the glasses Willis showed me in that pic were biggish but I still haven’t seen anyone with glasses like these.
http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2011/5/31/bed80ff6-b915-4a23-99a3-490fde8e84dc.jpg
Like these?
http://thumbs3.ebaystatic.com/m/m9EoDXVs-RVxRU_p-iabkHw/140.jpg
Joana # They look pretty cool to me to be honest, I blame all the manga I read in the past decade.
BCGs! Thank goodness I never got issued a pair.
Hey! That was on earlier today! Good movie.
In boot camp, the various branches of the litary handed out HUGE, UGLY glasses. My brother called them BCGs: Birth Control Goggles.
You put them on your FAAAAAAAACE
With your penis?
If you can do that I think you’re gonna need more than glasses for birth control. Yowza.
Thanks for clearing that up. And I suppose the old glasses would be too outdated, but her long hair could still be unfashionably nerdy of her. While Amber and Dorothy’s likeness is uncanny and would be confusing if this strip was in black and white I can tell them apart since Amber’s hair hangs in front of her ears while Dorothy’s hair flips to the right.
plus, Dorothy’s hair is longer and Amber has bigger, less perky boobs, and a pointier face.
Dorothy is also slightly thinner overall and has a paler complexion.
I believe one of the reasons, Willis updated Amber’s look was to do with her been related to Faz and he really wanted us to get out the brain bleach when he posted this in SP!
http://www.shortpacked.com/2010/comic/book-12/01-dominus-jacobus/phone-2/
No, Joe. It’s a DoubleMint commercial. You’re just a little slow cause you didn’t read the memo.
Of course you’d still be a little slow, but that’s neither here or there.
I am just glad I’m not being forced to decide which one is cuter. I mean, they’re no Sailor Mercury but not bad at all.
Oh Joe…
Yes!!! I’ve been waiting since the start of DoA for this moment to occur. Love it
Dude.
Hmm… I’m sensing a pattern with Danny’s taste in women.
I’m pretty sure them saying, “What?” in stereo was just a coincidence.
Oh My Cheese! I just figured it out! Dorothy is Amazi-Girl!
SHOCKING. That’s why she wanted to the do the story on A-G; it’s just like Peter Parker reporting on Spiderman. How did I never see this before?
(Plus: wow, those dorm doors are wide. Two people can walk through a doorway at the same time?)
I remember them being pretty wide, if only to help facilitate the moving of furniture in and out twice a year.
Probably more to do with wheelchair accessibility in real life. Anytime I find extra-wide doors, they’re always to accommodate those slow go-karts seniors ride.
I’m still weirded out by the half-baths. Never seen a dorm that had a toilet and sink for each suite but communal bathrooms for the showers.
Click and be amazed!: http://www.rps.indiana.edu/Readrescenter.cfml?page=floorplans
UCSD had the same set up in some dorms when I took classes there when I was like 12. I don’t know if they are still like that.
Now all you need is Billie and you’ve got Danny’s Angels.
What about Sal? I’d think she gets a spot over Dorothy.
He has glasses fetish, though.
You know, when you put them next to each other like that, the subtle differences become more obvious.
And no, I’m not talking about the hair.
Dotty’s face is rounder and she is 1-2 inches taller than Amber.
Now, is Danny looking like that just because ‘uh-oh, ex-girlfriend, and hopefully new-girlfriend in the same room!’ or does he see what Joe sees?
I’m pretty sure it occurred to him when he first saw Amber.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2011/comic/book-1/03-men-are-from-beck-women-are-from-clark/glasses/
That makes sense now, when she was pointing to her GLASSES, she meant that her glasses are not the same as Dotty’s.
No, she was saying “I MEEK AND PITIFUL AMBER, PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE AMAZIGIRL BEHIND THE GLASSES”
Well, it’s worked for Clark Kent for 50+ years, why not Amber?
Closing on 75 years now.
Cos unless they’re the type of glasses which makes you look really different, it doesn’t work too well as a disguise, especially these days.
Add Ruth and you’ve got Danny’s Angels: Full Throttle.
Kinda saw this one coming.
Not gonna lie. I didn’t.
I didn’t even see the similarity (apart from the glasses) until that last panel today.
Woo, one person! Score for me!
If it counts for anything, even though I saw the resemblances just fine… It never really clicked until Joe pointed it out just now. I knew Amber and Dorothy had many similar features, yet my brain never made the connection of “Danny’s gunning for a girl who looks a lot like his ex.”
I thought Joe was calling Amber creepy…Didn’t even realize the ‘they look alike’ was part of it until reading comments…
All we need now is for Faz to put on some glasses and stuff his bra and the set is complete.
Faz wears a bra? I wanted neither the imagery nor to know how you would know.
So I take it that you won’t want to see this either then?
http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2011/5/30/c5ae3e1b-e88b-4470-a71d-8e7bdcce41f0.jpg
I had to click it anyways, I laughed, and was thoroughly disturbed.
Why do you hate good?
Don’t hate, masturbate!
They look nothing alike. He doesn’t have a phone.
DOH! I forgot that little detail.
How could this slip past me by? (o-o)
I didn’t realize it until the last panel and it’s my favorite panel of all!
Although I try not to imagine them talking at the same time with the same creepy voice and threatening to assimilate into the fold…
I see what u did thar…
So which is it? Does Danny just have a type of girl he finds attractive, or is he trying to replace Dorothy with knock-off version (sorry Amber)?

Last panel, behind Danny:
Put Danny and Amber together and you get Shaggy from Scooby Doo.
I FREAKING KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn’t notice the few and extremely superficial similarities between Amber and Dorothy until people started calling them palette-swapped versions of each other (which definitely isn’t true). I don’t think you understand the way dudes like Joe work. He is for free love so cock blocking would prevent that.
Dammit Joe!!! Don’t ruin it for Danny!!!
danny in the last panel almost escaped me. its not creepy if its a twin fetish joe (well…okay maybe). i want them to bump into billie soon. that will be really awkward for them
I…I didn’t see this AT ALL.
Mainly because I’ve only read shortpacked! though. xD;
So I think I’m out of the loop for most things.
Everything you list is true except the different nose shapes. If they look different here, it’s because I’m sloppy.
Amber and Dorothy aren’t supposed to be exact palette swaps. They’re just close enough that Joe notices.
my younger brother has had two girlfriends. both are hispanic and older than he is. they look completely different, but we can still say he has a thing for older, hispanic women.
can’t we make similar comments towards danny? he has a thing for short, glasses-wearing women with short hair. i know people are saying the dorothy and amber are a little more identical than that, but they are drawn in a simple style. subtle details are easy to overlook, especially when the two characters aren’t shown next to each other.
Before I thought they were really similar, but now that they’re actually standing next to each other, they aren’t. They’re still similar, but it’s easier to see the differences.
Please tell me Danny was going to finish his sentence with “trade Pokemon.”
Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
I traded pokemon with his mom
for a nickel
with my penis
FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE
I harbor psl for her pokemans
am I forgetting any of the major memes here?
His mom requires your butt.
Joe is saying what we all thought near the start.
That when Joe and a girl are in their room, Danny should not be present unless he’s unconcious?
The fact that he was okay with him being present at all may be telling of something.
Now Joe is going to accuse Danny of trying to replace his ex and shit will fall to pieces. Calling it now.
Not with them present. Joe’s got *some* honor.
Oh, he probably won’t say that much… but he’ll probably say more than enough. Let’s hope he doesn’t.
Dude, the way they look alike is like me and my sister. She’s a little over 3 years older than me, and I’m a blond and she’s a brunette, but we still get mistaken for twins.
To quote StrongBad.
“Woah, there’s TWO of them!”
Well, they only broke up less than 4 days ago, and I don’t think they’ve seen each other since then.
This one: http://www.dumbingofage.com/2010/comic/book-1/01-move-in-day/face/
Thank you. Now who the face is my avatar?
I think you mean who the FAAACE is my avatar. But I don’t know the answer.
I just noticed, Amber is wearing the DinoBot “Honor” logo on her shirt … does that shirt actually exist?
this is so deliciously awkward!
Personally, they’ve always looked a lot alike to me. I see all the differences that everyone else has pointed out, but the similar heights, glasses, and especially the giant circular balls of hair overwhelm the differences in my eyes.
FINALLY, Someone points it out! They’ve always looked eerily alike to me!
I always thought they looked to much alike…
Just because they have glasses does not mean the look the same
Hey, Dorothy’s a bit taller. Didn’t notice before.
