Yeah, it’s too bad they’re streetlights… I don’t know why, I think I just don’t like it when characters break up. Oh well, it was kind of coming from the get go.
You have now left the entire remainder of the comic up to the interpretation of “this is all in Dorothy’s head as she imagines what will happen if she actually breaks up with Danny”
Well, quick like ripping off an old band-aid. Good for her, but I hope she does allow him some closure if he needs it. Though he might start stalking her.
Yeah I gotta be honest, I was with Danny up until he said “Maybe you’ll change your mind.” I would’ve dumped him if I were her based on that line of reasoning alone.
Yeah… With a girl like that, who has been talking about going to an Ivy league school her whole life… You just don’t say that shit… That’s a special kind of stupid right there. I hope they still don’t make em that stupid in this reality… Or were all hooped… Completely, absolutely, positively, out-and-out BONED… The future is grim ladies and gentlemen…
Let me see if I got this straight: Dorothy has obviously been thinking about breaking up with Danny for a while, but instead of doing it before, she waits until he has already enrolled in the same college as her and then simply kicks him aside just because he DARES to “stand in the way” of her going to Yale – and people think Danny’s the one in the wrong?
He’s definitely naive, maybe even a bit dumb, but Dorothy was kind of a jerk here. There were much better ways for her to go about breaking up with him than this.
I agree that Dorothy’s a coward, but don’t forget that Danny’s a pathetic clinger. It’s just that realisation’s finally hit Dorothy and she’s decided the misery of guilt over crushing Dannys soul is better than the misery of Danny crushing her soul.
Truth be told, given Danny’s personality, I would bet that if she broke up with him before hand… He’d have followed her anyways, clinging to the chance that they would still end up together.
No, fuck Danny. She clearly didn’t expect him to follow her, she clearly didn’t want him to follow her, but she also didn’t want to be the “bongo” who dumped him. So she put it off, because she felt guilty.
She’s been trying to break up with him for months. Danny’s just too self-absorbed to realize it.
I don’t know, I didn’t really view it as Dan meaning it that way, though… he’s too stupid to realize that’s what it can come off as. He just doesn’t see why this one school isn’t good enough.
So you think she shouldn’t break up with him because…. it’s difficult? More difficult than going through the motions of a relationship she doesn’t want for at least two years? People break up all the time.
He needs some quality bro time to get through this.
Then Joe bangs dorothy, thus breaking the code of bro and friendships are ruined through the entirety of university. sighs. what would life be without a little drama?
It’s not that they can’t end up together in the end, but it would be boring to put them together right away. But then I’m one of those people who likes experimenting with weird pairings (Joe/Ruth FTW).
Agreed that it would feel wrong. The other Walkyverse couples, yeah, I don’t think it’d be a big deal to pair them differently, but J&W have gotten way too much material dedicated to their pairing to pair them differently here.
I can see them becoming the beta couple (look it up on tvtropes) of this universe, precisely because making them go through a billion trials as a couple in this universe too would be retreading old ground.
I like the second panel. Dorothy finally realizes that any long-winded, apologetic goodbyes will not work; she knows she just has to say, and just walk away.
And now with that over with, how long until Dorothy gets “Joe’d”?
That was quick. Danny can be a little slow on things expecially when it comes to relationships… One should never spend lots of money on college so they can stau with one girl.
Dorothy could always go to Yale as a grad student. That’s waaaay more likely than her getting in as a transfer student anyway – they take very few transfers every year.
Also, I think she would have taken Danny’s comment much better if she hadn’t already been annoyed with him and wanted to break up. “I want to be with you” is generally not such a bad thing to hear when you’re hearing it from someone you want to be with, too.
In fairness, Danny is a clingy idiot who can’t see things from anyone’s point of view but his own and assumes the rest of the world does too. Doesn’t mean he can’t change, but it takes something like this to bring that about.
So no matter how you slice it, this relationship was doomed from the start.
It’s not so muh the breaking up, but the way she does it. Getting angry faced, telling him they’ve broke up in one sentence and then walking off? Now that is nasty.
Finally! This is the moment Danny’s soul snaps like a Twix bar! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! face
I’ve been waiting for this for so long.
Dorothy might wanna clarify that a little. Saying “We’re through” could just mean “We’re through with this conversation”, if you’re not thinking of it as the break-up sense.
Of course, if I met a guy like Danny, I probably wouldn’t have gone out with him in the first place.
Seriously? I think it’s pretty clear when someone in a relationship tells the other person they’re through, it’s done with. the relationship’s over.
And my god, I can’t believe Danny doesn’t get it either. Never thought I’d use this Linkara quote, but…”THIS! IS MY CLUE STICK!” *THWACK! THWACK! THWACK!*
hey just wanted to say good work on the spin of from joyce and walkey I can’t wait to see sal!!! scince in joyce and walkey she’s the complete oppisite of a christian catholic girl
This is just sad. I mean on one level its sweet that Danny supposedly cares enough about Dorothy to believe they’ll always be together, but on the other hand, he way to immature. Dorothy has plans for her life, and Danny assumes that she’ll be willing to pass those up for a high-school relationship.
He’s not asking it upfront, no, but that’s because he’s being passive aggressive about it. Subtle remarks hinting at what he REALLY wants.
He’s suggested to her that she’ll change her plans and want to stay there because of him. Its not hard to miss the subtle hints and back-hand way he’s essentially saying “you should totally stay her because of me”.
He wants to spend their lives together and feels that personal ambitions and dreams are secondary to being together. If she were to forgo her greatest ambition, he would be totally fine with it. He’s afraid to move on, and is using their relationship and his comfort zone.
It’s about dang time.
The little white dots by her head made me think that the last two panels were imaginary.
But good for Dorothy! She did not beat around the bush. Good girl!
Yeah, it’s too bad they’re streetlights… I don’t know why, I think I just don’t like it when characters break up. Oh well, it was kind of coming from the get go.
Sometimes breakups are for the best.
There are a few times in my own life where I would say that getting dumped was the best thing that could have happened.
Yeah. At least she didn’t drag it out. It’s horrible when those things drag on and on.
My first girlfriend avoided me for a week before she got u the nerve to break up with me… OVER THE PHONE… seriously… get guts
You have now left the entire remainder of the comic up to the interpretation of “this is all in Dorothy’s head as she imagines what will happen if she actually breaks up with Danny”
… Good job.
(Also, Garfield is dead)
No no, Garfield is slowly going insane trapped in an abandoned building.
See http://garfield.com/comics/vault.html?yr=1989&addr=891023 and the following five strips.
Meanwhile, this comment thread feels like the comic is trying to gaslight us. That’s a first.
Well, great. That’s how I’ll be reading it now.
If it really were all in her head, that would make the ‘Through the Looking-Glass’ reference that much more appropriate.
Poor Danny.
His soul just got crushed.
He doesnt even realize it yet though. So its gonna go on for a bit longer…
Well, we can only hope Danny doesn’t get his bike stolen anytime soon, or else his soul really will be crushed.
Maybe Sal will steal it…
Well, quick like ripping off an old band-aid. Good for her, but I hope she does allow him some closure if he needs it. Though he might start stalking her.
START stalking her? He followed her to her school!
And he pretty much just told her his greatest desire is for her to give up her dreams and stay with him for her entire life.
From one Dan to another I should slap him over the head.
Bummer. 🙁
Ooo, Danny, you should have thought that saying through or not have said it at all.
It’s called being young… we all get to be stupid for a while.
I was all set to feel bad for poor, Dumbass Danny…then he went and said that stuff in the first panel…

She’s been trying to break up with him for months. Danny’s just too self-absorbed to realize it.
Only a girl could become angry in the face of such optimism and hopefulness.
Umm no. Most people would be mad if the person who supposedly loved them’s greatest hope was that you’d give up on your dreams.
Seriously.
I don’t know, I didn’t really view it as Dan meaning it that way, though… he’s too stupid to realize that’s what it can come off as. He just doesn’t see why this one school isn’t good enough.
Why is it Danny’s fault if she’s there voluntarily? All he did was hope that she’d enjoy being there with him so much she’s stay.
Dorothy on the other hand just made the little time she intends to spend there (Barring unforeseen problems) very very difficult for both of them.
Tell me again, who’s being childish here?
I didn’t say Dorothy was the pinnacle of maturity either
So you think she shouldn’t break up with him because…. it’s difficult? More difficult than going through the motions of a relationship she doesn’t want for at least two years? People break up all the time.
Woah. Did I miss something? :/
I probably suck like that. Why did she just dump him?
You apparently missed the last two strips.
Actually, every strip Dorothy has been in since she was introduced. It’s what she’s been wanting since we’ve met her.
He needs some quality bro time to get through this.
Then Joe bangs dorothy, thus breaking the code of bro and friendships are ruined through the entirety of university. sighs. what would life be without a little drama?
Fun.
I think now is a good time for my relationship predictions for this universe:
DannyXJoyce
WalkyXBillie
JoeXevery girl not yet mentioned
Joyce with anyone but Walky would just seem so wrong. Alternate reality or no, it just feels bad to contemplate.

Honestly i think DannyxRuth would be awesome.
Some times the spineless need someone hardcore to straighten them out.
Literally if he was with Ruth.
I’d like to see that! 😀
What about Joe and Roz? I think that would work.
Oh, new OTP!
I’d actually like to see WalkyXBillie…temporarily, anyway.
Dorothy get’s Joe’d in 3…2…1…
Ok, I get it now. Besides everything annoying about Danny, he straight up doesn’t take her seriously.
I would have put it “Dorothy takes herself way too you gotta be kidding it’s not all about you seriously.”
Is it me or is Danny somehow managing to be more messed up than Joyce in this incarnation?
Yeah, relative to Roomies it seems like they toned down Joyce a bit and shifted what they took from her over to Danny.
Maybe. I remember Roomies’ Danny being pretty love-struck, but it was with Sal. It didn’t come up much because she wasn’t there.
He also took it kind of hard when she broke it off with him over the phone.
Danny seems a little less devastated at first than I had hoped… can’t wait for the Danny angst
I like the second panel. Dorothy finally realizes that any long-winded, apologetic goodbyes will not work; she knows she just has to say, and just walk away.
And now with that over with, how long until Dorothy gets “Joe’d”?
Thirty minutes. I’m assuming this is happening at exactly 7:30, so…year, 8:00 it will happen.

Wow Dorothy, you are such a bongo.

It’s not so muh the breaking up, but the way she does it. Getting angry faced, telling him they’ve broke up in one sentence and then walking off? Now that is nasty.
Danny just suggested that she give up her own dreams so she would fit in with his fantasy. That anger is perfectly justified.
Finally! This is the moment Danny’s soul snaps like a Twix bar! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! face
I’ve been waiting for this for so long.
You’re enjoying this a little too much.
And I don’t see his soul snapping yet.
You don’t say it while it’s snapping, the idea is that you announce that it’s going to snap and then it does and it is glorious.
comments like these with an avatar of a character’s face makes me assume that that’s what their personality is like sinc ei dont’ know them as well XP
I think Dorothy may be too smart to get Joe’d… Too much self confidence… But of course, that ain’t gonna stop Joe from trying… Repeatedly…
>__< She had to be more specific. that was not clear enough why they were through!! He's a weird guy though lol
Dorothy might wanna clarify that a little. Saying “We’re through” could just mean “We’re through with this conversation”, if you’re not thinking of it as the break-up sense.

Looks like Danny is….. Down in the dumps.
YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
I think the next strip will be mike telling danny that he fucked Dorothy when he blinked and now he’s going to Danny’s mom’s place
This is just sad. I mean on one level its sweet that Danny supposedly cares enough about Dorothy to believe they’ll always be together, but on the other hand, he way to immature. Dorothy has plans for her life, and Danny assumes that she’ll be willing to pass those up for a high-school relationship.
And honestly, he can’t be that dumb.
He never asked her to pass up her plans, he asked her to include him in her plans.
He’s not asking it upfront, no, but that’s because he’s being passive aggressive about it. Subtle remarks hinting at what he REALLY wants.
He’s suggested to her that she’ll change her plans and want to stay there because of him. Its not hard to miss the subtle hints and back-hand way he’s essentially saying “you should totally stay her because of me”.

just blasted through the back logs of SHORTPACKED and am now reading this comic… love your work Mr. Willis!
p.s. Dorothy and Amber could be twins! 😀
Please tell me that was a reference to the band Through the Eyes of the Dead.
that death stare on panel 2
I cant’s tell who is more of an idiot: Walky or Danny
Say what you will about Danny, this was a really crappy way of ending things.
Interesting to go back and re-read these comics especially since Dorothy herself is starting have doubts so Danny was kinda right all along
Hey Danny, there’s this huge river in Egypt I need you to look up to describe yoiu right now.
