Bill Barnes is the creator of Unshelved, a webcomic about librarians. Don’t laugh, it’s true. A regular feature is the Unshelved Book Club, where characters talk about a book they’ve read. Sometimes Bill invites other webcomics to get into the act, and probably, what, a billion months ago he asked me to.
I originally planned to do something with Robin and Leslie from Shortpacked! about The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs, but then convention season happened and I became Worst Guest Comic Contributor Ever. But a few weeks ago Bill reminded me that he could totally end me, and I got back to it. Not because of any threats of bodily harm he may or may not have threatened, but because we’re really good friends and I didn’t want to let him down.
Between the original solicitation for a guest strip and the actual creation, I had a new webcomic. So enjoy.
I sincerely hope we get more DoA Leslie… as she’s probably one of the more interesting Shortpacked! characters, or at least one of my favorites.
So, is it canon that Leslie is a DoA teacher?
Every single DoA strip is actually its own individual canon.
This is now known as the many worlds interpretation of DoA. I take it one step further: Every panel has its own canon.
This is wrinkling my brain. Uatu the Watcher weeps.
As a huge fan of Unshelved, I was already checking out this week’s Bookclub before I even saw this post. After seeing Leslie, I visibly squee’d and sincerely hope none of my coworkers saw me. Well played, Willis.
I read your page in Unshelved. I’ve never heard of it before, but I’m sure I’ll find the time (I’ve just finished Something Positive and Girls With Slingshots, which got me reading All New Issues….. Damn You Willis!)
But you may want to inform the creator that there’s an infinite redirect loop when you click on first page (Or your “Enjoy” link).
A webcomic about librarians which contains Walky wearing an IU sweatshirt and passive-aggressively ribs conservative Christianity… this pleases me in no less than six distinct ways.
By the way, I just wanted to mention how much I like the green in the DoA banner. One of the things I really love about the campus (and have seen others mention as well) is the great amount of greenery. I know it’s a simple little thing, but I feels like it adds some authenticity.
He was threatening to revoke your library card, wasn’t he?
My librarian sister has been bugging me to check out Unshelved for a while now.
“You like webcomics! This is funny!”
“… it’s library humor. You’re a librarian, of COURSE you think it’s funny.”
“There’s a lot of webcomics out there, not all of them are to everyone’s personal tastes.”
“…”
“…it’s like saying you like Books, so you’ll read anything and like it!!”
“….oh!”
I love the way you’ve worked with the light from the windows, Willis. You can understand exactly where they are sitting from observing how the light hits their faces.
O hey! I actually read this book.
It was hilarious.
